Not trying to be off-putting, but mahimahi is not common in Japan. The reason that they, the Japanese, don't use mahimahi is its raw texture and flavor, and it has little to no fat. Lived there for 16 years, and traveled from Sapporo to Kagoshima, not once saw Mahimahi on a sushi menu. But in Hawaii we do sometimes eat it raw.
Next chance you get to try menpachi, you should try them deep fried in a wok preferably. Just salt them and throw em in whole. I like them raw, but fried is the best way to prepare the reds. Great videos as always brah, you’re killing it!
As someone who aspires to be a chef I absolutely love watching your videos Taku, hopefully I can do videos like yours and do the fish I catch just as much justice
Nice little subtle nod to Oz with the addition of the finger limes. Would soooooo love to dine at your table if you and Jocelyn ever make it here down under 🥰
Beautiful work on the sashimi trays. I lived in Hawaii for a few years, on big island. Fished for menpachi and aweoweo many times and somehow never knew they were good sashimi! We always fried them up! Looks like I missed out on that big time!
Ryan Myers expo.. is an amazing channel. Check them out I've been watching Ryan for many years now. He's an OG from Florida my old stomping grounds. Ryan's top videos have Justin Lee in them. They just have so much more fun when together. Enjoy
Great video! I am from Oahu but live in Wa state now and its so nice to see fish I grew up spearfishing eaten in new ways. Ala'ihi, menpachi, aweoweo these fish are usually never eaten as sashimi since its a hassle to filet and are usually eaten fried. All 3 of these fish make excellent miso soup (can use head or whole body after cleaning). Platter looked ono!
Taku you have to come to Australia one day! We have awesome fishing spots, some of the best in the world and probably have lots fans here willing to show you awesome spots. Western Australia in particular has some of the best fishing ever!
🌴 all right I could of sat thought whole video just at the tackle shack , and then came the fish catching 👍🏼 ahhh, and then 😳 the eye candy ! 😆A whole board full of sashimi 🥢 pass the wasabi and ponzu Sauce !
I love this channel and the content. The only issue I have is (why I often don't watch the videos), that I really get hungry. I can basically only watch the videos if I just had food or are about to get food. Seriously.
1:13 “Today we’re gonna find something for Taku to cook me” 😂 Made me die 💀 I would be trying too. Ahaha all jokes aside Taku you’re too great. Literally got my girlfriend and I into foraging for mushrooms 🍄 👍🏽
With mahi it’s best to leave them in the water till you hook up another cause even if it’s hooked they’ll follow each other and you can basically just hook into one after another, obviously only when they’re grouped up in a school tho
Ehu? Thought you guys came up empty on the bottom. Please tell me Ryan fried up some menpachi for you. Drizzle some shoyu and hot rice. That’s how we normally eat them. But sometimes in soup too. Save the bones for miso. So good
When I was a little kid (we were there before Koko Marina in Hawaii Kai was "Koko Marina", at first it was just a Foodland and a gas station and I think a hardware store) when Koko Marina was new, one of the stores was a fishing store and my older brother and I used to love looking at the big hooks and lures. I even got a little pocket knife that looked like a fish! They did not appreciate it when I took it to school at good old Koko Head Elementary for show and tell though!
It’s so cool seeing Taku explore new types of fish. Helps me be more open to trying new things
hes completing his pokedex

Oh yeah, these guys are the real deal! Loved the chemistry, optimism, and support!
I love this Hawaii series. I have no fishing experience but damn you make me want to give it a shot. Keep up the great work!
Mahi’s make awesome sashimi, it’s a mystery to me why they’re rarely seen in sushi. I know they’re common in Japan. Awesome video again Taku!

I'm surprised you are not on the Food Network channel yet. That looks so good, and professional.
waste of time for him. food network basically ties you down with contracts.
Taku knows how to plate! Would love to do a catch and cook with him one day. Come to Texas and let's go grouper fishing.
