***PLEASE NOTE*** Yes! Any salt will work. Go with the cheapest you have. The only reason I am using sea salt in mine is because it is the cheapest salt I have. Years ago I purchased two 50 lb bags for only $8 per bag. That is 0.16 per pound. I save my expensive, mineral rich salts for anything food related. I typically use 1-2 Tablespoons per load
Hi Heidi, Thank you so much for this. I am an old lady, just now getting into these kinds of cleaning supplies. My Mama would love this. She was familiar with old ways of cleaning, since she lived through the Great Depression. Please tell me what kind, and how much, of your home made vinegar that you prefer, for a laundry rinse agent. I am also learning to make vinegar. Also, please give me the amounts of this laundry powder you are using for dish washing, by hand, and carpet cleaning. When you discover how much works well in the dish washer, that would be helpful too. When you add it to your scouring powder, how much are you adding? Our God IS good All the time. May He continue to bless you, as you bless others, using your thirst for knowledge, good health and frugality. Love in Christ, Kathryn
New washingmachines use less water than the old ones. That gives problems with getting the soap out of the clothes. Not only your soap. I love the recept, thanks a lot! 🤗
Now I have to get on here and tell y’all about this scouring/detergent. I made a batch and did a load of laundry using only vinegar in the rinse. My clothes were clean and so very soft. 😊 Then I washed some dishes and it cut the grease out of a plastic bowl beautifully. When using Dawn, I have to add an extra squirt directly into the bowl to get it that clean. Now… I’m on a roll! I scoured my tub and sink. 👍🏼 So, this is why I am leaving a comment: I made several batches of jerky and the hardest part is trying to get those racks clean. I have discovered that if I scrub them without my glasses on, they get a lot cleaner. 🙄😆 So, like I always do, I put the racks in the sink and started running very hot water. I got a “wild hair” and instead of bleach or Dawn, I used the powder. OMG! After just a few minutes I took my vegetable brush and started to lightly brush over the racks to see if it was coming off. YES! Yes it did. And before the water even cooled down, I had 3 racks clean (and I inspected them with glasses on 🤓). They were literally spotless!😮❤❤ I am 🤯 blown away. (And so happy I got that “wild hair”!!
I started off using this as a booster because I was afraid it wouldn’t get my kids clothes all the way clean. Boy was I wrong. I’m a mother of 6 and I use 2-3T for each load, in the dishwasher I use 1T, and I also use it for stains in the floor and on the counters. It works so wonderfully and is super easy to make. Thank you thank you thank you. I think I may make a huge batch of this and just refill my quart jar.
I had a heap of animal towels to wash. They were seriously dirty! I split them into two full loads, one with commercial laundry powder and one with yours. Your powder won hands down Heidi. There was so much less staining. I have to admit I was surprised. Thank you for this wonderful recipe.
great video. here's a summary. please watch the full video for details. uses: laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, scouring powder, handwash dishes (1 part = 0.5 cup) for 1 quart/4 cups of recipe: * 2 parts salt (cheapest available) * 3 parts baking soda * 3 parts washing soda * 1 tsp essential oil (optional) use 1-3 tbsp per load of laundry * add (homemade) vinegar to the rinse cycle (optional) turn baking soda into washing soda by baking it on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 1 hour (research to verify)
This is the most amazing cleaner! It cleans everything & takes stains out of my clothes that Tide Pods wouldn’t touch! No more Tide Pods for me! I can’t thank you enough for researching & coming up with this! My husband kids me that I’m becoming a suburban homesteader, lol. I love your channel. God bless you & Patrick.
Heidi, I've been using this for a month now, and this is the best detergent I've ever used! I've used Tide, Whisk, All, Persil, etc. My son is Autistic and has sensitive skin and Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin). I was using All Free & Clear for 13 years before I tried this. This is hands down the best I've ever used and cost me almost nothing. Furthermore, I make washing soda from baking soda so it's even cheaper! I couldn't thank you enough!
@Teresa V spread a layer of baking soda on a baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour at 400°, STIRRING every 15 minutes. But it is no longer edible after that so make sure you label it for safety.
A few years ago, I had a dog named Candace that was very elderly. (She died at 17). She was really sweet but got weaker. She couldn't tolerate standing long enough for a bath so I mixed a home-made dry shampoo. I put cornstarch and a few drops of orange oil in a spice container, shook it and let it set for a few days. I brushed her real good and then sprinkled it on her coat, working it in with my hands. It really made such a difference in taking away that doggy smell and made it easier for the family to love on her. RIP, Candace. 🐶🐾👅
Hi Heidi, been making my laundry soap for several years. I mix up a Big 5 gallon bucket that will last us for all ver a year. Seems like there’s always something to wash 🥴. Got a new washer 3 (?) yrs ago & the darn thing tells me when it needs to be cleaned 😳. I only use hot water for bedding & towels. I’ll make up some of yours tho as it’s about time to wash down the walls again. Desert sand & major wind at times leaves a fine layer of dust everywhere 😤😤 I’m 73 & thought people were crazy yrs ago when they said soon we would only need a plastic card to shop🤪🤪. Now machines tell us what to do 😵💫😵💫. No Alexa here tho😜😜 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Oh, Gram.....I'm sooo with you on Alexa......NEVER talk to those things....they can HEAR u in ur house, in your bedroom....🤨.....I have never ENABLED any of those options.....I despise them....75 here👵🏻.....🖐🏻☺️
I am thankful for all the tips, suggestions, and recommendations on this channel. My wife's health is not good and I am learning to do more around the house today than I had to in the past. Always a thumbs-up for each video, even if I don't use what I see, hear, and learn here.
I have been using homemade laundry soap from soap flakes. Over the years I noticed that my kitchen towels don’t absorb water anymore. Very annoying! 😡 I’ve been searching online and found out it was just BECAUSE of the soap flakes! One woman suggested to add some dish detergent to my liquid mixture. So I tried that for the first time and noticed that my kitchen towels were a bit softer and took up water a bit better. Since I have to be very frugal because of my very tight budget and the friggin insane price rises, I am now so happy to have found this! Baking soda is (still) cheap here in Belgium and now I can make recipe this for even less money!! A few laundries from now, I’ll come back and share the result of this with my towels. That was absolutely driving me nuts: towels that don’t dry...🙄🙄🙄 Since I’m alone, I don’t have a load of laundry every week, so this might take a while! I am really curious about the results! Will do a wash tomorrow asap! THANKS!
I made this all purpose cleaner a few weeks ago and used orange oil, not only because it smells so good, but because it is used in cleaners for grease. I have only used it on laundry so far and until today, only on regular dirt. Today I put it to the test with my grungy kitchen rugs. I am super impressed! They came out great, but what impressed me most was the one I keep in front of the stove that gets grease splattered and drips of all kinds. It came out looking like new, except for one tiny spot, that if I would have pre treated would have probably come out as well. My next test will be in the dishwasher. I am confident it will also do well.
I heeded Homemaking on the Homestead's advice against using soap in the laundry, but I started feeling a little discouraged because I'd already bought the products and wanted to DIY to avoid the commercial detergents. You just revived my hope lol I'm off to make the powder now. Thank you!!!
I love your service to others Heidi. I watch all your videos. Binging actually as I just found you after completing a herbal medicine course. Fundamental so no degree as I hate how you can’t be qualified if you don’t go to uni! I study every day and my passion like yours is better than a degree. Love and gratitude. God is Good 💕🙏
Since watching this video I have made a gallon jar of this soap. I had planned on putting some in a shaker jar for scouring powder and a jar for washing dishes by hand and with the dishwasher. I washed clothes and they are cleaner as is my washing machine. 2- I used it in the dishwasher ( 1 t ) and my dishes came out very clean and so did the inside of my dishwasher. Well, mostly .... because my water turns a lot of things orange. But a lot of that orange came out. I only use the dishwasher once or twice a week If that. But I had a full load and went ahead to try this. 3-Hand washing the dishes was really nice as well. 4-Scoured my sink and that was pretty when it was done ! Next test is the bath tub that is supposed to be white but has a lot of orange. I am feeling pretty confident though it will be white in no time at all. So This viewer absolutely LOVES this laundry soap powder and the versatility of it. Thanks so much Heidi ! ******** correction I used a scant Tablespoon ( not a teaspoon ) in my dishwasher because of the orange staining from our city water. A teaspoon would probably work so just play with it at your house and see what works for you.
Heidi, I just came across your recipe and am thrilled with it. I have eczema and even with Seventh Gen, Free and Clear, my skin was always irritated. I’m amazed at how little is needed, how easy it was to put together and what excellent results it gives. Many, many thanks! Val
Heidi, I do appreciate the time, research and effort that you put into your household recipes and the detailed explanations on your findings. I'm the type who has always asked "but why?". You always do that for me. I'm naturally skeptical of some of the youtubers because they seem to be regurgitating info without true experience. Thank you a hundred times for alleviating my natural skepticism and feeding my curiosity. Great job 👍, much 💚
Great comment. She does the same for me-answers all the questions in my head so I can make any adjustments for my own purposes, knowing the why of each piece. Knowledge is power :)
I have been using washing soda, baking soda, borax and the zote flakes(after deciding I didn't want to grate the soap bars)...sometimes I would add the Downy Unstoppable scent boosters. I'm excited to try this new recipe! I started using vinegar in the rinse cycle as I found out it helps to soften the clothes. I have copd and can't take the perfumes now, so vinegar is the way to go for me. And, no, your clothes do not smell like vinegar, they smell clean. I'm so glad I found this before making a new batch...the last one I made lasted for TWO years! Thanks so so much!
Good info! I only use cold water for clothes. Never knew Borax needs warm or hot to dissolve. I MUST start making my own vinegar soon. Store-bought vinegar is SO expensive now, even the store brands! Thank you Heidi❤️
Thank you for sharing your recipie but especially why you changed it and your results. I really appreciate the explanation of store bought laundry soap. People fail to realize the scents and chemicals in them are also hard on our pets!
In the UK we call sodium carbonate 'soda crystals' and I wouldn't be without it, it dissolves grease so well. If I cook anything oily I always put soda crystals on the roasting pans... preferably heated (the pans) and it works brilliantly. I also soaked some pyjama bottoms in soda crystals and the amount of oil that came out of them... I was so shocked. After I had finished soaking them a few times they felt completely different, so much lighter and the old colours came back although soda crystals can be hard on coloured items, than when I had washed them in the washing machine with normal washing detergent. It is worth noting that when using soda crystals by itself you need to rinse very well, plain water is fine, as it leaves behind a white residue. I'll definitely try your recipe adding to the sodium carbonate.
You are not wrong on the chemicals in laundry products, I have dealing with skin issues and as we have been trying to track down cause. Looks like the SLS etc are my issue. Thank you for the recipe I will be making some now!
Awesome vid. Can’t wait to try it. Just ordered washing soda and restocked on baking soda and salt. Did the math out of curiosity, looks like this method will cost about 5 cents / load based on the prices I got my supplies at. Did the math on the last bottle of natural-ish detergent I bought-20 cents / load. Worth a few minutes of measuring and shaking for the cost alone, but I love that it’s better for health and possibly the washer too. Thanks for your excellent research, trial and error process, and video-making work, Heidi!
Yay! For such a great cleaner! I made a batch Today with grapefruit essential oil and it smells amazing. So far, I have used it to hand wash dishes, ran 1 TBS through the dishwasher, used it to clean our bathrooms, and ran 3 loads of laundry. The dishes, sinks, and our shower sparkled and were squeeky clean. Our towels were fluffier and more absorbant. The microfiber towels were like new again. Our white clothes were not quite as soft using vinegar instead of fabric softener, but the fabrics seemed much fluffier just like the towels were . They were soft, but in a different way. I shared the recipe and your video with family and friends. My mother in law can not get washing soda in New Zealand, but by your suggestion, we learned how to make it with baking soda. 😊 Thanks again for sharing your recipe and knowledge!
Thank you for providing this recipe! I love it! You don’t notice it while the clothes are wet, but when your clothes dry- there are no retained odors. I used just 1 tablespoon on a blanket that smelled very doggie, and it totally removed all the old smells.
Thank you so much for this video. I will try it and thank you so much for the Scripture verse at the end. That is a verse that I have been thinking on all last week.
thanks so much for the awesome video, and thanks also for explaining how the different components work. I'm so glad I discovered your channel! Keep up the good work and God bless!
I am so happy for you surpassing 300k subscribers, Heidi! It took forever years to get to 100k and now multiplying. God IS good, ALL the time @Rain Country
Thank you! I think it took me 4 years to get to 100k which really did feel like it would never happen so it is nice to be gaining nearly 100K per year now.
Hi Heidi, i have tried this laundry. Wow works very well. I had a coffee stain and i just put some on the arear and let it sit, it did wonders. I noticed my woollen sweaters i dont have to use a lint roll any more. Taking a step to try something and having faith you do see things happen. Bless you guys
@@wasnevernurseratched439 I never use the soap dispenser, I sprinkle it over the laundry in the washer before starting. I have never had clumps in my wash nor had anyone else say they have had this issue. I have no idea if it would be the iodized salt but that should not make a difference
Hello Heidi! Thank you for this recipe. I tried it this week, and have used it in the laundry, in our dishwasher and cleaning a burnt pan by hand washing! It works wonderfully.
@@rlynnmiller5485 I use the same recipe for dishwasher as well. A tablespoon for a big load is enough. Anything more will leave white residue on the dishes. I also add vinegar for rinse aid.
Maybe I'll try. I made homemade powder a few years ago (from One Good Thing by Jillie) two years in a row, and I was happy with it for the most part, but our whites were dingy over time and the hubby asked me to go back to store bought.
I love this cleaning powder! My laundry is fresh - and I save time and electricity because I don't need a 2nd rinse now - dishes come out clean and rinse up easy and the tub and countertops are squeaky clean too! And by the way You're the best Heidi and I appreciate you! A thousand thanks 🌻🌼🌻
This is the same recipe I used for my cloth diapers flats. Never had a problem with stink! Our water is so hard here though it doesn't seem to work as well with clothes
Thanks for all the extra information on Borax. I did not know this and have been making my detergent with it. I will discontinue using this now because I never wash in hot water either. Have a great day.
I was waiting on this one, going to give it a try, thanks sweet friend for sharing and for all you do to help us get better prepared, have a blessed weekend
I’m getting ready to try this! I so appreciate your channel! When I think of something I need to do, I think “I believe Rain Country has a video on that!” lol Thank you, Heidi!
Good evening, Heidi. I’ve been rewatching this video. What I didn’t like about the liquid laundry soap receipes is that they trail and I must be very sloppy because it was always a mess - and a pain to make up. I made it up immediately and have used it exclusively since. For use in my dishwasher, I do add citric acid to the mix. And if I am doing a load of heavily soiled whites, I do add sodium percarbonate and allow it to sit overnight in the washer. Apparently the sodium percarbonate is active for 6 hours. It’s darn good on our laundry and absolutely wonderful for the dishwasher. Where I am, I can purchase each item in 50 lb bags very reasonably. One tablespoon, huh? Been wasting that, it seems. Good, I can cut back. I’ve been using 1 ounce. I used to love Method dish washer tabs before they changed to the plastic coated variety that didn’t dissolve but did cause a build-up in the tubes resulting in the drain pumps needing 5 replacements before I discovered the real problem. At least I could replace the pumps myself without an expensive service call. Probably threw away 5 perfectly good drain pumps!
I made my first batch of this for laundry. I was forced to finally bite the bullet and get a new washer & dryer. 😉 after 26 years 😊 I used up my old batch of soap and started with this today. I was struggling with fading before. I've learned that this detergent will help with that. I've always been a warm/hot water washer, but after reading the comments here I'm thinking I should give cold water washes a try. There are always new things to learn. Thank you for sharing your interests with us. 💚🌞
You have a lovely day, too. I wash my scrubs in hot water and dry on the hot cycle for infection control. And throw the underwear in there too. But everything else in cold water.
Hey Heidi, thank you for this recipe - I'm very guilty of sitting back and listening to ideas, then researching the heck out of them before trying them. I'm in the middle of nowhere, so my septic tank is an important part of my life - no its not sad! I've always been a little uncomfortable about adding soap (any sort of lipid) to my washing machine and tank. I've used your recipe for over four months now - my washer is squeaky clean, my clothes feel clean too. I add my vinegar to the rinse and everything is soft, fresh and lovely. I haven't tried it on anything else yet, been busy in the garden but will do soon, thanks as always.
Hello, i m wondering how to add vinegar in rinse cycle? Do I have to be alert when the washer goes to rinse cycle and pause it to add the vinegar? Thank you
@@suzannepurple Most washing machines have a special container for adding fabric softeners that are then released later in the wash cycle or rinse cycle, that is what you use
@@suzannepurple Hi Susan, I think if I was using a normal washing machine I would put it in the "fabric conditioner" section of the tray, then leave it to do its thing. I use a manual " wash and spin" system and put it in manually when the clothes are rinsing - hope this helps
Hi Heidi, I'm going to mix it and give it a try. I'm already using a similar blend for my dishwasher. The only difference is that the one for the dishwasher is with 3 parts of citric acid and all the other ingredients in your recipe. Recipe: 3 parts washing soda, 3 parts citric acid, 1 part baking soda, 1 part kosher salt. Optional: a few drops of citrus essential oils. I pour 1tbs of this mix in small square silicon molds and when they are hard I just place them in a mason jar. Ready to use. Blessing to you all! 🌹🌸🏵
With your dishwasher tabs, how do they dry out in molds when you are using dry ingredients? I love this idea but need clarification on how to do. Also does it affect stainless steel dishwashers? Thank you!
I use True Lemon crystals in my mix so it doesn't clump. It works well. BTW, like you, I determined (before ever making my own detergent) that soap is a BAD idea in laundry. Just using reason, I knew that soap would create a scum, not only on the machine but on the clothes as well over time. That's why I never used soap in my detergent. And so far, so good. The True Lemon crystals also are astringent and should take care of any buildup of scum. If you want a more pronounced fragrance, you might use lemon extract, although I have not and I don't know if that would work. Thank you for a very informative video. And special thanks for the info about Borax breaking down elastic. I did not know that!
Hi Heidi I have searched for a cleaning powder ratio for so long and tried it many many times. Then I have been using your ratio for 2 weeks now. So I can tell your ratio is the BEST! And do you know how much this powder helps your machine? I have seen a washing machine maintenance man who decomposes cleaning machines, he shows how the inside of the machine has a black mole and smells soooo bad. Problem is laundry detergent, especially rinse and fragrance beads etc. Even after just a few years of using it, the inside is so nasty. But he showed a 10 years old one that inside is totally clean like new. Owner of this machine was using DIY powder detergent like yours. Thank you for your help!!😄
@@medicinemom3620 As Miss Rain mentioned, this powder will remove mildew and soap scum from the inside of the washing machine if you continue to use it. So, although I don't dare clean my washing machine, I feel that the finished laundry is much cleaner than with commercial detergents !
Thank you, again! I watched this to make my own, and I made a lot!! To use the ingredients, as we were moving...but a friend needs it, so, here I am again. Amazed as I read through your Playlist, wow!!! Well done. May God continue to bless you and Mr Rain.
You are # 1 for using natural sources and i appreciate your knowledge. I just finished soaking some soakers i put on my bed for my cats with baking soda and sprayed with vinegar and removed the stains.
@@monicamrozek I use about 1 heaping tablespoon and I put it in my dishwasher's main wash compartment. I also put about 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a glass in the top rack. This acts as a rinse aide.
I found a recipe very similar to yours with the addition of epsom salt. As I've gotten older, I cannot tolerate a lot of fragrances out there. And since I am allergic to high prices, unscented laundry detergent is still just as bad as the regular. Like you, I don't use the dishwasher, but I will definitely try for my hand washing. Thank you!
Hello Nichelle, I have seen the epsom salt idea as well. Have you added that to this recipe? If so, how much did you use? Did you find it effective? Or did you use it in place of the salt? Sorry for all the questions 😊
@@maryberkenpas1596 Hi Mary. I can't find the website from which I got it, but here's the recipe: 1/2 C Epsom salt 1 1/2 C Baking soda 1 1/2 C Washing soda 1/4. C Sea salt 20-25 drops essential oil(optional) Mix dry ingredients together, add oils if using then mix again. I tend to not buy washing soda, so I make it using baking soda because it's a lot less expensive.
@@maryberkenpas1596 You are very welcome. I have noticed that it makes the clothes, even towels softer. And I read in another post, that if you need a little boost for dirtier clothes, just add a tablespoon of Dawn...tried that as well, and it works great! I did try it for hand washing dishes, but it doesn't do well...leaves the dishes greasy.
@@nichelle-marquese743 Good to know! I tried it with dishwashing, too, and found the same thing. I’ve been thinking about adding vinegar to see if that would cut the grease.
I love this all purpose cleaning powder! I was wondering why my clothes were getting dingy and my washing machine had a grey ring around it. You are right! It’s the soap causing the dingy clothes and ring. Thank you for all you do! Merry Christmas 🎄
Didn't know about borax and hot water, thanks good to know! Just watched a couple other videos of making DIY laundry soap, you're the only one that said that!
Thank you very much for this recipe and explaining how to make washing soda. That is a great blessing for me to have this info. I cannot buy washing soda in the country where I live. Be blessed.
I am your new subscriber mam, I always watch your videos and I have learned so much from you especially about the plants and flowers. Thank you so much and may the Lord continue to bless you and your Family and increase your knowledge. I am a lady following you from South Africa.
I started using this recipe. I don't have any essential oil, so, it's unscented. It makes everything feel clean and, surprisingly, soft, even without vinegar. I'm looking forward to using it in other ways. Thank you!!
Heidi, I can not tell you how much I love this cleaning powder. Only thing I do differently is I add a 1/4 teaspoon of Ultra Dawn along with the T. of powder for one load. I mix it in a little water then add to the machine. It did wonders for my worn butcherblock, sheet pans and anything that needs a good surface scrubbing. Now I'm ready to try it with the dishwasher. I'll let you know. lol :o)
Thank you Heidi! I have made and been using this recipe in my laundry and dish washer along with my home made vinegars and you are right!! It works!! Thank you so much for another great recipe!
I've been using this blend for years and loved it. Until we started watering our garden with the gray water. The salt is really bad for your plants and it will kill them. I lost my entire tomato and pepper crop the first year because of the salt. If you want to use this in your wash make sure it isn't then going to your gray water irrigation system. However, I still use this blend for items that go into our black water. It's awesome!
@@angelicguidance444 you don't want to put this on your plants. If you use your laundry water or grey water to water your garden then using this is a detergent cleaner is not a good idea. We use are grey water to water our plants. The salts in this mix definitely kill the plants. So I no longer use this to clean my laundry or anything else that feeds into our grey water system.
@@angelicguidance444 The gray water is the stuff that is not "dirty " Like the rinse water from the laundry. People who conserve water use this water for other purposes besides just letting it go down the drain. Personally I use it for mopping floors, washing the walls, cleaning the porch, etc. But with this recipe, the salt will kill plants. So don't use the water containing the salt on any plants you want to live!

I tried a FelsNapta recipe a few years ago. My asthma couldn't take the smell so I've been using an expensive Norwex product. I'm going to make up your recipe. The more natural the better, to me. Thanks, Heidi, and God bless!
I had not heard of using salt in laundry soaps. I've been using the soap, borax, washing soda for years. We have soft water, so it works well, but sometimes I think the bath towels are not like they should be. So this week I tried your recipe, did several loads, so far so good, and this morning I used it to do the weekly kitchen deep cleaining. Worked very well, the sink was just sparkling!

Praise the Lord, I had just a few days ago talking to the Lord and saying that there must be a way to make my own laundry cleaner and then I saw your video today. Thank you so very much. Also I can use it in my carpet shampooer!!!!!!!!!!!!! safe for precious cats !!!!!!!!!
Great info! The Borax/hot water thing may explain why it made me itch when I washed my clothes in it, as I rarely use hot water~~only for things like dish clothes, etc. It probably wasn't dissolving and was staying on my clothes. I had to switch that ingredient out for something else (not all natural, but I'm choosing my battles). Thanks for sharing what you learn with all of us!
We all have to choose our battles in that way, not just you. Anyone who claims to be totally chemical free, plastic free, all natural, and totally organic, is not being honest or not thinking or even realize how much of any such things they do still use. How many people live in a homes where not one single thing is made in China for example?

I am definitely going to try this, I already have been using the rcipe where you mix normal washing powder with coarse salt and Bicarb and it is great, also vinegar as softener
I made my laundry detergent but got build up too. I went back to store bought because my clothes didn’t smell clean and fresh. I will try this new powder

What is cleaning soda and where get it thanks so much
Hi Heidi,
Thank you so much for this.

New washingmachines use less water than the old ones. That gives problems with getting the soap out of the clothes. Not only your soap.
I love the recept, thanks a lot! 🤗
Baking soda, salt & vinegar can be bought with SNAPS= food stamps. Where regular soaps can not be purchased with SNAPS.
I have a soap allergy, so I have to be very carefully of what I use or I will be broke out, started when I was about 27.
½ c = 1 part
2 parts sea salt (1 cup)
3 parts baking soda (1 ½ cup)
3 parts washing soda (1 ½ cup)
Optional: essential oil
Now I have to get on here and tell y’all about this scouring/detergent. I made a batch and did a load of laundry using only vinegar in the rinse. My clothes were clean and so very soft. 😊 Then I washed some dishes and it cut the grease out of a plastic bowl beautifully. When using Dawn, I have to add an extra squirt directly into the bowl to get it that clean. Now… I’m on a roll! I scoured my tub and sink. 👍🏼
So, this is why I am leaving a comment: I made several batches of jerky and the hardest part is trying to get those racks clean.
O wow! That is great to know and thanks for sharing with me!
great video. here's a summary.
please watch the full video for details.
uses: laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, scouring powder, handwash dishes
(1 part = 0.5 cup)
for 1 quart/4 cups of recipe:
* 2 parts salt (cheapest available)
* 3 parts baking soda
* 3 parts washing soda
* 1 tsp essential oil (optional)
use 1-3 tbsp per load of laundry
* add (homemade) vinegar to the rinse cycle (optional)
turn baking soda into washing soda by baking it on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees for 1 hour (research to verify)
So glad you are loving it as much as I do. The more I use it the more pleased I am with it :D

I'm going to make this!
I LOVE THAT PHRASE!!! You could start your own channel under that same name.
I used to use washing soda a small scoop but recently it's left my clothes a bit hard so I'll make a small batch of this and try it
Even old blood stains! Who knew!
Me too!
How do you make washing soda?!
@Teresa V spread a layer of baking soda on a baking sheet. Bake for 1 hour at 400°, STIRRING every 15 minutes. But it is no longer edible after that so make sure you label it for safety.
ThNk you for commenting this. I use all free and clear as well and was wondering how well this would compare! Very helpful! Xoxo

I would use organic arrowroot instead of cornstarch just so that it's not GMO... Thank you so much for the tip!.
@@dawnlilagrace2024 I haven't found a good organic source for that...🤔
Hi Heidi, been making my laundry soap for several years. Desert sand & major wind at times leaves a fine layer of dust everywhere 😤😤
I’m 73 & thought people were crazy yrs ago when they said soon we would only need a plastic card to shop🤪🤪. Now machines tell us what to do 😵💫😵💫. No Alexa here tho😜😜

I am thankful for all the tips, suggestions, and recommendations on this channel. My wife's health is not good and I am learning to do more around the house today than I had to in the past. Always a thumbs-up for each video, even if I don't use what I see, hear, and learn here.

And all the time God is good🙌🏼✝️ thanks Heidi
That was absolutely driving me nuts: towels that don’t dry...🙄🙄🙄
Since I’m alone, I don’t have a load of laundry every week, so this might take a while!
I am really curious about the results! Will do a wash tomorrow asap! THANKS!
Thank you Heidi for figuring this out and sharing it so freely through UA-cam! You are such a blessing to so many people.
Excellent! So nice too hear all the why's.
God Bless you Heidi, I have learned and relearning so much I have forgotten.
Running your washer full with hot water at least once a month will clean your hoses and pipes. (Learned that from a plumber).
AND it's made my clothes softer than ever!
Hi can you share your ratios for the 1 gallon? my math is confusing me to no end. Thank you in advance
Hi Heidi, God is good all the time. Hallelujah.❤❤❤
Used this on my kitty litter rugs out side the box....worked amazing!!!
Thanks again for sharing your recipe and knowledge!
I am new to all this. How much do you use in a full load of laundry? How do you use it as a hold hold cleaner? Do you premix in a spray bottle?
How much do you use to hand wash dishes? TIA
Thank you for providing this recipe! I love it! You don’t notice it while the clothes are wet, but when your clothes dry- there are no retained odors. I used just 1 tablespoon on a blanket that smelled very doggie, and it totally removed all the old smells.
I might try predissolving some borax in hot water and keeping a jar of that in the cupboard for those extra jobs. Thank you for your knowledge!
Borax is irritating to the skin. If a member of the family have sensitive skin as I do they will be very uncomfortable
Thank you so much for this video. I will try it and thank you so much for the Scripture verse at the end. That is a verse that I have been thinking on all last week.
Thanks for the info about Borax and the need for hot water. I too only wash in cold water. Really like that this is septic system safe.

@@wasnevernurseratched439 I never use the soap dispenser, I sprinkle it over the laundry in the washer before starting. I have never had clumps in my wash nor had anyone else say they have had this issue. I have no idea if it would be the iodized salt but that should not make a difference
Thank you SO MUCH for explaining this in parts! 👏🏼🫶🏼💕
Hello Heidi! Thank you for this recipe. I tried it this week, and have used it in the laundry, in our dishwasher and cleaning a burnt pan by hand washing! It works wonderfully.
How much do you use in the dishwasher?
@@rlynnmiller5485 I use the same recipe for dishwasher as well. A tablespoon for a big load is enough. Anything more will leave white residue on the dishes. I also add vinegar for rinse aid.
This is fantastic in my washer! The clothes are so clean they look new!

I’m getting ready to try this! I so appreciate your channel! When I think of something I need to do, I think “I believe Rain Country has a video on that!” lol
Thank you, Heidi!
Thank you for this recipe.
I now feel like i can make my own laundry soap.
This simple recipe is great.
Thanks for sharing that!
@@rom140 thanks for that info about adding vinegar to the old style eaters. I too do not have trays & add manually! Happy laundering!
Thank you Heidi. I’ve been looking for an alternative to store bought laundry detergent for a while now. Can’t wait to use your recipe.
Did you end up cleaning your machine with this? If so, how much did you use and how did it turn out?
@@medicinemom3620 As Miss Rain mentioned, this powder will remove mildew and soap scum from the inside of the washing machine if you continue to use it. So, although I don't dare clean my washing machine, I feel that the finished laundry is much cleaner than with commercial detergents !
Thank you and God bless you all too

@@monicamrozek I use about 1 heaping tablespoon and I put it in my dishwasher's main wash compartment. I also put about 1/2 cup of white vinegar in a glass in the top rack. This acts as a rinse aide.
I found a recipe very similar to yours with the addition of epsom salt. As I've gotten older, I cannot tolerate a lot of fragrances out there. And since I am allergic to high prices, unscented laundry detergent is still just as bad as the regular.
Like you, I don't use the dishwasher, but I will definitely try for my hand washing.

Hi Mary. I can't find the website from which I got it, but here's the recipe:
1/2 C Epsom salt
1 1/2 C Baking soda
1 1/2 C Washing soda
1/4. C Sea salt
20-25 drops essential oil(optional)

I can't thank you enough for this recipe😊! I was looking for it for a long time
I've been using this blend for years and loved it.
Yes, salt will fry them, I have used a combination of salt and vinegar to kill weeds in the past
Why would you put in on your plants?
@@angelicguidance444 you don't want to put this on your plants. If you use your laundry water or grey water to water your garden then using this is a detergent cleaner is not a good idea. We use are grey water to water our plants. The salts in this mix definitely kill the plants. So I no longer use this to clean my laundry or anything else that feeds into our grey water system.
@@angelicguidance444 The gray water is the stuff that is not "dirty " Like the rinse water from the laundry. People who conserve water use this water for other purposes besides just letting it go down the drain. I had not heard of using salt in laundry soaps. I've been using the soap, borax, washing soda for years. We have soft water, so it works well, but sometimes I think the bath towels are not like they should be. salt is actually only one molecule off of bleach.
Amazing work, little sister! Well done. Soli Deo.
Great info!! I make my own laundry soap with zoat soap, borax, etc. I will try this when I run out of what I've already made!!!
Thank you, you are absolutely wonderful, and so radiant. Thank you for explaining why you used certain ingredients and what they do, it's so helpful.
I'm using washing soda with a natural eco friendly washing powder, my clothes are so fresh and my towels are lovely and fluffy. I never use hot wash, only warm. Diana NZ
If you rinse well, it should not be an issue
@@RainCountryHomestead True! It's near impossible to live a totally "organic" life.My hat is off to anyone trying even a little bit to be mindful of what they buy/use.I love all of your info~you've been a huge help in my effort to live a homesteading (and fairly natural) lifestyle. God bless!
Thank you Heidi 💖😘💖
I am definitely going to try this, I already have been using the rcipe where you mix normal washing powder with coarse salt and Bicarb and it is great, also vinegar as softener
Thank you Heidi 😊
I made my laundry detergent but got build up too. I went back to store bought because my clothes didn’t smell clean and fresh. I will try this new powder
My new Samsung is making brown streaks on my clothes and blankets. I have tried various ways that just didn't work. I will try this. Thank you for sharing.
I still wash in cold but the soap scum is all gone due to this recipe
Miss Heidi, this video was. Jam packed with useful info. You do extensive research. Amazing, can't wait to try this and thank you.
Okay so I just made my second batch of your natural laundry powder. I'm loving this and it's so steakin easy. New washer and new laundry powder! You are a blessing! Thank you 😊
Glad you are happy with it, I made a jar for each bathroom, the laundry room, and the kitchen because I love how well it works for everything I need it for. Easier and less messy than the laundry soap I made for years AND works better not just for laundry but for cleaning stains and scrubbing sinks, tubs, and toilets
Oh! Gonna try on dishes too!
Thanks for the simple 3:3:2 ratio. That makes it so easy! (3 baking: 3 washing: 2 salt!)
How much powder per laundry load?
@@susanhoskins5285 I do 1-2 Tablespoons. Usually just a heaping tablespoon. More or less depending on load size and dirt level.
