Against the Wind - Kayak Camping Takes a Turn
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 гру 2019
- This overnight kayaking trip takes a turn as the cold wind and rain hits in the night. Fortunately I was on a trusty Hobie Outback, thanks to SunJammers in Panama City, Florida and was able to make it back across the Saint Andrews Bay near Panama City Beach. When the temperature drops 30 degrees in a few hours and the winds kick up it can change your adventure quick!

That mark on your pork rind was the pigs tattoo of identification that the farms put on them to tell them apart
That's so cool..... Thanks for the info!
The Happy Sojourners
That’s gross
Your kids have the flu and you’re playing in the cold wind and rain. Your wife probably expecting to have three babies to take care of. 🤣🤣🤣 Great vid! You don’t always get the adventure you intend but you always get a story. 👍
Haha, well I ended up fairing pretty well. True that!
As a kayaker of almost 4 decades, I see so many things done wrong here...dangerously wrong. I'll mention a few key safety points all kayakers should know....
This video is a perfect example of kayakers overestimating a heavy peddle drive kayak in heavy chop, and especially in a Hobie as they are known to have leaky hatches. They grab onto the side handles thinking it will make them more stable and TOTALLY forget they have the best safety tool right beside them...a paddle! In chop like this...always, always, always...have your paddle in hand in case you need to broach or adjust for a rogue wave faster than the rudder can react. That paddle in hand, it can be a lifesaver.
While the dry bags saved the day keeping your feet dry getting back into the kayak, if you flipped with them still on your feet you would have had water-filled bags on your feet. This means the kayak could have easily floated away faster than you could have swam for it if you lost hold of it. If the wind, wave, and current is right, that kayak can be literally 75 yards from you in just seconds.
Do a bit of research and you will quickly see that Hobies are notorious for capsizing in chop like that simply because they are too heavy to react to compound waves as fast as a lighter more buoyant hull design. The Mirage drive itself slows the kayaks float reaction time to a lateral wave. Do a search for flipped kayaks on UA-cam and you will see a lot of Hobies flipping in conditions like this. As much as I love the Hobie's comfort and stability in flat water, what seems rock-solid stable on flat water is simply not the same in heavy chop. And while they track wonderfully, Hobie's bow design is not meant for surfing on a wave.
Think about the '120 rule' here. If it was only 45-50 degrees outside if you hit that water you almost instantly go into what is known as 'cold shock', which is a life-threatening involuntary gasping reaction the body goes into almost immediately which causes a person to swallow water, (especially splashing water). It's like a panic attack on steroids, plus a feeling of having a cardiac arrest. A wetsuit or drysuit under your PFD would be crucial in those conditions.
Additionally, with the front hatch open, even if you could have gotten back into the yak, you would have been hypothermic in just minutes on top of the cold shock with that wind chill. If the yak had flipped this also means the hull would have not been much above the water line and extremely hard to flip back over. If you were reduced to just laying on the bottom of the yak, it would have barely just kept your head out of the water if your gear weight overcomes the added foam inserts in the Hobie.
For kayakers not familiar with the 120 rule and 'cold shock', here is some vital info...

Awesome comment Alan..... Great points we can all learn from!
I have been out and ran into storms like that. It's not the storms that scare me, it's those waves that just come out of no where and can be bigger than me. The best anyone can do is peddle/paddle as fast as humanly possible and hope for a lot of luck on the way back!
Yea you are about right.... it was fun!
Thank you Trip for all the great adventures and laughs in your videos.
I enjoy kayaking myself and hope to try camping overnight.
Happy kayak adventures 😎
You're very welcome, I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment ;) Hope you get to do some overnighters soon!
I was cracking up when you were dealing with the waves. Im glad Im not the only crazy one whos been in that situation. The only difference was I actually capsized. But kept my cool. Thanks for the video. Keep it up. Hope the family is alright.
Interesting situations we find ourselves in huh? Keeping your cool is #1 ;) Everyone was good or got better. thanks!
Wow you had me on the edge Trip...Whew...glad things CV turned out good...You Rock 👍👍👍🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
I was on edge to my friend lol
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us! This was the wildest yet! Looked really dicey on your way in!
Happy you enjoyed it! Yea man, that was an adventure for sure!
I love it! Now, that was an adventure! Keep making kayaking videos. I'm new to your channel and I subscribed. I will be back for more! Thank you!
For sure an adventure! Thanks for subscribing and I hope you enjoy the future videos (and the past ones ;)
Cheers for the upload I hope you and your family's are doing better can't wait for your next crazy kayak adventure
Thanks Ben, cheers! Family is well and I can't wait either!
I thought that you were about to take a “Trip Dip”! Shew, MAN! I was nervous for you! LOL!
Yea me too! lol
Hahahahaha this is definitely one of the craziest vids I have ever seen you do! Good times! 🤪
In every life a little rain must fall... Great," REAL OUT-THERE" adventure! Lots of big chop! The dry bag footwear was a good call. Glad your safe brother! Thanks for the outing! Atb Sean
Agreed! Yea that was real chop... i was happy I had the thought of the dry bags... I don't like cold feet!
Loved your vid. Noth’n better than getting away from the crowds on the water. Enjoyed your vid. Thank you.
Thanks!!!! You are very right!
great video as always. I love the panama city location. i have been kayaking weekly around Mary Esther and Fort Walton. Great bays here to explore as well. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Webb! I love that area too.... Will do bud!
FYI...hay T.P....entertaining to say the least, up-date: the Bitty Big Q, grill is available at Amazon, for $49, with free carry bag, I just bought one,...thanks. Also, food for thought,..in regions where there is known bad weather or high winds, I go low to the ground with a "Snugpak" scorpion 2. and aim the low end or slanted part towards the prevailing wind/storm. good luck.
Glad you got a grill! Sweet little deal.... Thanks for the tip!
Quite the adventure. Thanks for motivating me to get out there and have a few of my own!
Yes it was! Hope you make it happen.
It's a good commercial for the kayak. I was laughing so hard, I watched it four more times, and laughed some more.
FOr sure! Hey I'm glad you enjoyed it that much. Thanks!
definitely some "B type" fun. You'll look back on this adventure and smile. Good stuff. Thanks.
Yea for sure. Glad you enjoyed it!
Man the weather changed fast. Looked like a fun trip with a good side of adventure at the end. Glad you were able to make it back without going for a swim.
Yes it did..... It absolutely was! Yea really, I was happy too!
"I've got camp site, I've got crabs." What more could a guy want! :)
Haha you know it!
Nice test for the kayak lol really good video I’m getting back out there this year for shure from 580 I got in to 225lb now I’m going for 185lb thanks for the motivation you vídeo help a lot keep on the good job my friend
Good test for sure.... Holy cow! keep it going!
Those dry boots made my day! Great video Trip!
They made my day too! Thank Dirk!
Hope your family feels better and wishing you all a Merry Christmas. God bless.
Thankya and same to you and yours!
Hope your family feels better, and Merry Christmas brother👍
Thankya!
Ohhhhh,.....I've been there! It can get pretty miserable but it makes for nice memories around the fireside when you're older.
Yes exactly!
Definitely deserves a thumbs up holy crap is right wind and rain sucks for the outdoors 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Thankya! It was wild!
You're crazy man. Good thing you're attitude and toughness
Maybe a little crazy.....
Reminds me , when I came back in St. Auggie inlet. Left out early in a 15' flat bottom, 25 evin. , Slick seas, were king fishing the pogie pods. Came in around 1:30, seas picking up, with strong onshore wind, with a full on out going tide. Yeah, it was fun after we got thru the trough the slop. Till
then I was watching how close the jetties were for our swim, if we went down.
I watch the weather now for everything. Hope the family is well!
I know exactly how you feel! I've been through passes on an outgoing tide and a sea wind.... WIld ride!!!! Family is well ;)
Loved it, I know how you feel with the waves I’ve surfed the hobie many times after tarpon fishing offshore and flipped over on the way back and lost some of my gear. It gets rough quick in a little kayak.
It was a wild ride! The hobie did well though....
Dude, that chop coming in... I know the feeling, I was nervous for you!
It was real!
You still one of the best you tubers love your videos.
Hey thanks Raymond!
When your adrenaline is about to go to scared, that's an adventure. Great video I could feel it.
Absolutely Derek! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Awesome aventure bro! Take care! Greetings from México! 🙌🏼
Thankya sir! Greetings!
The ending brought tears. This man has a huge heart.
It was a heck of an adventure!
Awesome trip! That spot you ended up camping in was beautiful.
Glad you ejoyed it! Yes it sure was.....
Great video! Can't wait to get back on the water!
Hope you can get back Out There sooner than later!
thanks trip. merry Christmas
Back atcha!
Just got a bunch of new gear for Christmas cant wait untill spring comes so I can get out there
Nice! Hoping for an early spring!
Man this was the first video of yours I found and damn was I entertained every min. That was a wild ride man I'm sure your adrenaline was pumping lol
Love the purity of the video. I can tell some of the swells kinda drove you some. Lol two thumbs up!
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yea, the swells were sizable ;)
Hope the family is better and they appreciated this effort ! Have a Merry Christmas & stay safe :D .. bg
All is well ;) Will do!
See, this is what I want to get into, just more camping and exploring while fishing.
Make it happen!
This was an AWESOME one. Just goes to show attitude changes everything. Allot of people would have mentally gone off the deep end with a little bit of rain alone. Your channel shows that challenges and unexpected obstacles are all apart of the fun! You’re inspiring :)!
Thanks Jasmine! Yes, attitude is very important when things don't go as planned. Glad you are enjoying catching up on the adventures. Thanks for watching and for the great comments!
Been there. Had a good time. Learned a few things.
Good learning experiences there!
That was touch and go for a minute! Glad you made it back. Pretty impressed by the hobie too - I bet a lot of kayaks would’ve capsized.
Sure was! That hobie did really well. Great yak!
Sitting in my living room watching the rain fall and I seen this in my list. You made me laugh so loud at that pork rind my family is just staring at me. Then I'm on the edge of my couch hoping you make it back. Fathers will do a lot of thing for their family but wow that was something. Hope your family is healthy during this pandemic and take care. I hope to make it to a rock a dock some day.
Glad you enjoyed it Dennis and I hope your family can start laughing with you instead of staring lol Hope to see you at RockaDock one day as well. You wouldn't regret it!
Enjoyed watching the adventure. Thanks. Wish it was a bit warmer here in Michigan and I'd be out on the water. Cheers.
Glad you enjoyed it! Lets hope for an early spring!
Wild adventure. Been there a time or two myself. Not on purpose. Like you, it just went sideways in a hurry. Glad you made back safely.
It was wild indeed! I'm glad it turned out the way it did as well..
Great adventure hope.... you and your family are getting better
Thanks! All is well!
Awesome adventure Trip. Hope your family feels better soon. My youngest just got over the flu not too long ago as well.
Glad you enjoyed it! Flu is rough on the kiddos....
Crazy trip, I was super interested in watching that hobie in the rough like you went through. alot of debate about that 2019 outback design and rough water, but think your vid just shown how well it handles in the rough; those were some big rollers, really cool. Needed that old sea yak of yours! cheers man, hope the fam is feeling better, just went through my household, about a week with the wife and my girls sick - no joy.
yea, it did fine really.... Still have that old sea yak ;) Being sick is no fun... all is well!
Try soaking that multitool in white vinegar, may discolor the metal but it will knock the rust off. then oil it back up with 3in1 or wd 40 or ballistol?? whatever, but vinegar will eat rust.
Gotcha, thanks for the tip!
If could have gave you two thumbs I. Would have hope the family is better now..... man those waves. We're big that kayak did awesome along with the help of captain of the boat
Thanks Rose! Yea it was a wild ride!!!!
excellent ,it all worked out for ya
An adventure well lived!
Great idea on the dry bags on your feet.
I had to think of something.....
Those waves were scary! I'm glad you made it back ok.
They were something special..... lol
Just got in. And started from beginning
Awesome Scott, hope you enjoy!
Your video takes me down memory lane. I grew up in PC and know exactly where you were. I lived on North Bay near the college.
Oh cool! Glad it brought some good ones back.
Wow. Those were some big swells at the end!
No kidding.... got a little hairy....
Yup, that was crazy! 👍🦌🎄
Always an adventure!
Omg the drybag on your feet idea was amazing lol. I love camping in the rain but I can only imagine how bad that wind is. These kind of videos from you are the most fun to watch although I know they're probably not the most fun to film at times. I've been a subscriber for a long time, I even still have some sailing and such gear and the very first brown "Get Out There" sticker. You never disappoint, Trip! Stay out there!
The dry bags saved me some misery for sure.... They aren't always fun to film but they probably are my favorites lol Thanks for being around for so long Lora glad you are still enjoying the content!
Just imagine how bad it would have been on the paddle board. Thank goodness Brad hooked you up with an outback for the trip. Stay safe out there!!
Yea... well the SUP would surf better ;) I would like to see what it would have been like.....
Trip Smith ah yes, how could I have forgotten your expert level SUP-surfing skills 😂j/k
Recently bought a paddle board and discovered your channel. Big fan now from New Zealand
Awesome! Would love to paddle out your way one day.....
You crazy!👍🐕💨
yes yes... I know lol
Sorry you had to cut your adventure that bit short trip....nether the less still really enjoyed it 👍🏻 Hope your family are all doing well.....looking forward to the next one....happy Christmas from the UK...
Still an adventure ;) All is well! Thankya!
Trip, I noticed your front hatch was not strapped down on your way back.
Had you flipped, for sure you would have to self-rescue with a flooded hull. I don't think you would of been able to pump out all the water w/o any help. You are a lucky man Trip!
You are exactly correct.... That's just me being unfamiliar with the yak... It would have been an adventure! lol
You got me inspired a long time ago and now I have to try that. Love the footwear mate. I'm off to pack the car now, will let you know how I go 👍
Awesome Tim! Enjoy your adventure!
That doesn't look rough...to people who have never been in a kayak in those waves. I have and it is definitely not a lot of fun. Well, kind of but it IS always rougher than it appears when you are more than a foot off of the water. I wasn't too worried for you though since the video was out...you obviously made it home. 😂🤣
Yea, it wasn't bad most of the time. But a few of them stacked up and gave me a little scare ;)
Great kayaking vid brother.👍
Thanks bud!
Nice Product Placement and demo for the Murphy's. Thumbs up to them for the samples at Rockadock! Thanks for bearing through to make a video. Question ..does that pedal drive work better than paddling in rough water?
Lol it was organic, not intentional ;) Oh yea.... I'd say the pedaling is much better than paddling....
Thanks for sharing!
No problem, thanks for the comment!
Trip has dry bags on his feet, he is wearing every stitch of clothing he has with him, paddling in three feet seas, and he is still smiling the whole way. #GETOUTTHERE!
Got to be smiling! lol
i love crazy! nice job
Thankya mam'!
Nice video! I want to get back into both kayaking and sailing soon, hopefully next year I'm sure. I've been wanting to try a pedal drive yak. I still have my old town vapor yak, it's been sitting in my garage. I haven't filmed any videos in years and my most recent was in my previous sailboat an Oday 22 years ago. I have yet to do a single video on my Hunter 33 and been having it since early 2013. Now i've got some cleaning work to do on it but nothing major, it's just been in the marina.
Edit: Woahhh...I only watched half your video when I first commented, I had to go take care of something. Just watched the rest...wow what an adventure. That's my style there mate, damn right I thumbs up 👍😎. The Hobies are some pretty sea worthy yaks.
Haha glad you enjoyd it! yea it was an adventure and I was happy to be on the Hobie ;) ENjoy those sailboats!
While recovering from a hip replacement I came across your video's....Thanks for the many adventures I was able to take watching you while laid up in bed...I truly believe this helped with my recovery...Thanks for the fun!!… Dr. Dan
Hey Dr Dan! I'm glad you found the videos and I hope the hip is doing well.
Wow I can tell the swells were pretty high. I got caught in a summer storm ⛈ in my kayak at goose creek bay once and I did tip over. It was warm weather so it made for a fun adventure. Glad you made it out without tipping. That would have been cold 🥶!!!
Yea, they were pretty serious there for a few minutes.... Yes, it would have been freezing and rough..... but would have been AMAZING video lol
@@TripSmith lol yeah it would have been amazing video!
keep the paddle in hand in rough water it could make the difference between staying upright and going for a swim.
Good thinking!
Tripp you were not the only idiot on a kayak at this time. I was kayaking the length of the Apalachicola river during the same time. I saw the same weather forecast and when I camped (I use a hammock also) near the town of Blounstown I walked about 4 miles to Tractor Supply to get rubber boots (no wet feet for me) and overall type rain pants. I did not think of the dry bag idea though, brilliant. This extra gear really saved my bacon. When I got really cold I had to stop (about five miles short of the intended camp site) and set up the hammock (with under quilt) and climb in just to warm up.
Well that's good to know! The dry bags worked surprisingly well lol I have been in the situation where I've had to stop and focus on warming up. Being cold is no fun!
thumbs up for the dry bags on your feet !!
Lol Thanks!!!
You’re nuts dude. Haha
Keep up the great content!
Will do! Yea... maybe a little....
I’m looking forward to you doing another adventure in that grey sit in down a river.
Shouldn't be to far off when I'll make that happen ;)
Great job thinking outside the box in how to keep your feet dry!
That little thought saved me lol
Pure craziness
Yea you're right! fun though!
great video and adventure it was a little dicey at the end though.
Yes, it was a good one and dicey for sure lol
Glad to see you back Out There! As a biker watching you suffer that cold wind I couldnt help but think if you had some good ole leather you would be comfortable and fine. Maybe you could try a few videos going back old world and old school using leather and hides. Its heavy but it works so much better than this modern light crap. Also I see you in a Hobie again, your almost full circle back to the Adventure Island! I have always wanted one of those or even a Windrider 17!
It was good to get back out there CHarles.... That wold be fun to try some leather! Id love to try out a Windrider..... to cool!
Love the Hobie. Imagine if you had to paddle
Would have sukked to paddle....
Let it rip trip!
Dang right!!!!
Holy crap the chop was crazy
Uh huh.... got a little sketchy
You should get a set of snake skins for your hammock and one for your tarp. Makes setup and tear down a breeze, especially in the wind.
They would be nice to have... Just haven't made any lol
Maybe it wouldn’t have been this bad if you didn’t have to go home earlier than expected. At least now you can try to prepare for things like this to happen and that you can be prepared. Like an extra tarp for more cover and a huge dry bag to just stuff everything on one bag that you can bunnies tie down to the kayak. I know you’ll figure it out. Thanks for showing us that adventure. So happy you made it back safely. Hope you and your family get over the flu bug real soon. Take care and see you on the next one.
Yea.. who knows, could have been like that for 12 more hours.... Im happy it went well in the end. Thanks!
I kayak that spot couple times a week I was actually out later that same day in the cold. I launch from the navy base. I take my hobie revo 13 or Eddyline nighthawk. Cool vid
Oh nice! Glad you enjoyed it!
👋Have you had an adventure ⛈🔥⚡🌊💨🌪🌦 where things were kind of tough at the time but turned out to be a great story or memory? Tell us about it!
Truly trip I have too many to tell and each one is quite unique and around five of them I'm surprised I'm still alive
We had one we going to remember for a while 😉 Aidyn still wants to go back and try and find his fishing pole
Went Canoeing down Shoal River with my In-Laws when it was still too cold to go in an over loaded canoe. Got hung up on a tree and flipped upside down in the middle of the deepest part of the river. Had to swim to shore in cold as heck water. Father-in-law recently passed away. Will remember that trip forever.
I grew up going on adventures with my father. By the time I was 20, I could have written a book!
One of my favorites (and not to mention scariest) was the time we paddled from the mainland d to Mackinac Island. All that water was intimaditing for a young boy.
ehh me and my brother in law had a genius idea to take my sit on kayaks down a a small river last year. Well I have had my kayaks out on a lake many of times fishing. But we wanted to try moving water and thought we'd give it a try and said screw it. Well let me tell you, it wasn't the brightest idea in the book. We get to the river and it was up a little bit and my mind was saying "this isn't going to go well". So I look at my brother in law and asked him "hey, you sure you want to do this?. He said sure..... So we loaded up our things and took off. Well not even 15 mins in to it and my kayak ended up getting pulled over into the stronger current and my back hit a rock and turned n hit a branch and turned n flipped. I lost my glasses, my phone, my knife, my tea, my water, my flip flops and a ceramic jar that had my pipe and a bit of bud..... I was irritated when I realized I lost my phone but even more irritated I lost my bud so I could get my mind off of losing my phone..... Worst trip ever.
Hey Trip check your Auto store and see if they carrie a product called Evapo Rust. O'reilly Auto Parts carry it here in Mo. Its made in Arkansas and its enviromentaly friendly. It will work miricles on rust. I put an old bicyle chain that was totaly froze up with rust down in some evapo rust over night and pulled it out the next day. I wiped it off and rinsed it, then used some compressed air to finish drying it. I then applied some chain lube and I was able to still use the chain. It looked like a new chain. I have used it on knives, old hand tools and numerous bicycle parts. Oh yeah you can re-use it several times also. Love this adventure in the conditions you were dealing with. Hope the family gets well soon.
Hey thanks for the tip! Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! A bit scary on the ride back for sure.
Yea, it got a little dicey ;) But that's the fun stuff!
Always enjoy watching your journeys and good job with filming and keeping everyone engaged during your trips. . Would be good if you could provide more detail about exactly where you launch..... rather than “general” descriptions. I have paddled/boated many of the very areas you have filmed. Maybe fish more. You are in some prime fishing areas with lots of opportunities for better supper than those MRE’S. Overall good job. Oh ....and bring along some boiled eggs and boiled peanuts ..great protein there. Thanks
Glad you enjoy them Mace! Well, in this trip I launched from a buddies house so didn't want to share that exact location. Haha, yea I should do more fishing. I bring eggs sometimes ;)
Cool vid. NOAA has a pretty accurate forecast if you ever need it..lol
Haha yea right.... thanks for the tip ;) Glad you enjoyed it!
That’s nutts dude. Smart thinkin on the dry bag shoes haha
Going on my first kayaking camping trip next week
Wild times! Have fun!
gave u a thumbs up for being a good father
That was funny What a ride home lol
It was a wild one!
