Been looking for a medium sized carry option for fishing. The chest rig setup is exactly what I had in mind but having only seen pictures of the Askare I could not see the full potential. Now I only need to make a Savotta compatible storage tube for my travel rod.😂
Absolutely perfect for fishing, that front webbing is perfectly placed to keep all the bits and pieces you need on hand. Very easy to install any hook holding materials as well. Let me know if you want me to measure or test anything for you. I'm not a fisherman myself, but I have access to all the gear at my buddy's house.
I can't thank you enough for this, I had this in mind but could not put it together, I can imagine a H harness is much more comfortable. I kinda have in mind seeing it now in sort of belt rig with straps kinda like Helikon did with their Foxtrot MK2, maybe some kind of what the brits have in the kit or old school US ALICE rig
Words like yours are why I'm still doing this man, thank you. And maybe soon I will try an H style back section, I just need to order in a few more meters of webbing from Varusteleka
Thanks Tim. This channel and the sub Reddit are a prolific breeding ground for this kind of shenanigans. My wallet hates both. The Kukkaro doesn't have the necessary webbing points, right?
Haha yeah I imagine I'm not helping anyone's addiction. And for the Kukkaro you are correct, no top webbing loops. I am going to play with it tonight when the kids go to bed, but for now the best I have seen is carabiners to backpack straps
I there's a youtuber in France that figured out how to turn the Kukkaro into a chest rig. Look up: "Savotta Kukkaro et Askare, de hip packs bien foutu" and click on the first video. At some point in the video, he even explains how he did it.
Unless I have missed it somewhere in your videos or comments I got a new tip for you. Try putting a G-hook at the end of each of the shoulderpads 1” webbing (the end you would use to tighten the straps) to any of the Savotta packs. The endloop on the straps act as a stop for the G-hooks as well. I own the Jääkääri M, but assume it works equally great on the new Kahakkal. Then use the Askare packs two “top” loops at the back (just as you would fastening it to the back of the backpack). Then you got a quick two connection chest pack whenever you want. No extra work or weight except the two G-hooks which you can leave on. I use this setup for my camera gear. BTW I own the Askare and love it immensely. Perfect to wear as a cross body bag. I use it as such for work carrying my latops and I have used it daily for 6 weeks this summer travelling California and Alaska by car visiting the most beautiful and fantastic places. Its a must have.
I am 100% going to try this, I never thought of it before. If it is as good as you say I will definitely make a video on it and give you all due credit
@@Tim_Keys You could also put a short velcro strap keeper in the end loop to roll all up when the G hooks are not in use. Thus avoiding the metal hooks to slap around. This also functions as additional stop.
You could attach those male buckles to one of those molle boards that go behind the font car seats and female ends to pouches. That way you can unclip them when you need to pull those pouches off.
Very soon I am going to do a tactical vehicle series, where I'm going to find all the cool and interesting ways to make Savotta bags into modular bags just like you say
It's entirely doable and probably 100% more comfortable as it will bounce and move with your body, but hey you can't beat a few buckles and cannibalized webbing. And using that 40mm triglide from the Askare itself
Nicely done! Great demonstration as always. I had been taking a hard look at chest rigs before the ASKARE. I think it would be a great alternative... cough cough superior, to most of the other rigs out there. It would be a great way to incorporate ASKARE on a longer ruck with a larger pack.
Have you tried out the elastic organizers? Absolutely lovely. Keeps some kit upright if you're going for a chest rig. I think my next video will be something like "100 Days of Askare" or something like it. I hit 100 days right about now-ish and those elastic organizers are amazing, so I want to show off how I put it together
@@Tim_Keys That sounds great! I haven’t tried them yet. On the list lol Currently keeping a hook back zip mesh pouch on the inside of mine. Looking forward to the 100 days!
@@Tim_Keys Yeah! That sounds awesome. I will try and work on something this weekend. I think I am going to be a little busy the next couple days with work and family, but will try and get something together.
Tim, from your observations, is there any way to rig the Savotta Askare hip pack as a chest rig with the brand new Savotta Kahakka 25-liter pack. I'm just curious because both the Askare and the 25-liter Kahakka are next on my to purchase from Varusteleka list, and I would like to know what additional hardware and software that I might need to purchase for such a transformation. Thanks!😊
I did a video on an Askare chest rig, super simple and very comfortable. I tried typing it out here but it got a little bit long. I am so sorry, I hate to be that guy, but "go check out my other video" haha. But I will definitely play around and see if the Kahakka has any secrets that create something even better for an Askare chest rig. I will get back to you guys on that as soon as possible
@TimothyKeys I did watch that video, but my question was directed more towards, "Is the Askare capable of being rigged directly to the new-style shoulder straps of the Kahakka packs. I apologize if I failed to make myself clear in the above post. Thanks.
@@brucemattes5015 Whoa now I see we are on that video here, I am sorry man this stuff is getting a little bit hard to keep track of. I am still learning this system. I will definitely try out what you are asking as soon as I can
Hi
I went to Varusteleka today, the tabs on the PC18 and Askare are very close to same width.
Wow, thank you so much! I appreciate you doing that for me, that was super nice of you friend

Great video Tim! Have you considered using the Särmä TST X-Harness for the straps?

Crazy idea, what if we do a 2-part video series as a team? You do 100 days as an outside hip bag and I do 100 days as an every day shoulder bag...

Is there a video showing different ways to make it a sling bag over one shoulder?
I plan on doing a video very soon on all sorts of sling setups
Once again a Masterclass? :D
Haha at some point I plan to be a Savotta encyclopedia
Could you a belt kit with it like H harness or british webbing system???
I am absolutely sure you could, but I haven't tried this
Team #happystove
The best outdoors companion right there, he's up for anything and he never complains
looks nice but... what is it ?
It's a Savotta Askare. Made into a super easy chest rig.
