- Did you know that you can be excused from jury duty before the date you are scheduled to appear? It is not difficult if you act promptly and have a good reason. Jury duty is one of our civic duties however those who run the programs for the court- usually called a jury coordinator- understand that the time you are assigned for jury duty is not going to work if that's a day you'll be on your honeymoon or defending your master's thesis or
giving a big presentation. Contact them early, explain the situation and you can probably be excused.

when my kids were very young and I was a widow with no family near me, I got a jury summons. I called and let them know I ran a child care at home and didn't have anyone to replace me or take care of my own kids. I also didn't have a working vehicle at that time. I was told none of that was an excuse and to walk if I had to ( 13 miles away). Apparently my kids were supposed to care for themselves. They were 1 and 3. Thankfully, I didn't get called in, but the stress of that time was unbelievable. I also have OCD and social anxiety.
Easiest way out is tell them you cannot be fair and impartial when the judicial system and law enforcement cannot be fair and impartial... that excused me immediately yesterday lol.
Why can't people just volunteer for jury duty? My job depends on me and i really can't afford to be away from work...
Great question- watch out for another video!
They reimburse you LOL
@@abundantharmony For piss poor nearly nothing. It's not worth missing a day of work for what they pay you for Jury duty
@PogChamp but if it was your friends and or family they would be biased that's why nobody you know will ever be on the jury in your case lmao
@PogChamp again that's why jury duty is random. To prevent biased people getting on the case
Why is it so hard for people working in the court system to just accept there are people out there that don't want to do jury duty and try to force them to do it expecting a positive outcome? I don't want to do jury duty because I am poor and having a hard time buying food and paying bills.
Trying to travel to some stupid court house everyday for as long as a trial goes on to listen to lawyers ramble on while throwing out objections multiple times is not something a poor person like me needs to be doing. I need to be here trying to focus on the things I need to do and trying to find ways to make money instead of making my life situation worse because some idiots in the court system think they know better than me on what I should be doing when I leave my home.
This is truly sickening and people really need to push to do away with this "forced civic duty" BS and do as another person in the comments said and make this 100% voluntary only instead of being forced to try to come up with ways to get out of it because some idiot holding their nose up high thinks this is what we should do no matter what our situations in life are.
There are many things about the court system that could use change. Contact your state representatives and offer to help on issues that interest you.
This shit is outrageous! I have social Anxiety and a leaning disability and they STILL denied my claims even with a proof letter. I have to still show up for jury duty on the date I was given. It's beyond pathetic.
Sorry David- you will have to show up but the judge doesn't know about the information you offered so you can offer it again when asked - other than that sit in the back if that is an option and hopefully you will be released in a few hours. Hang in there!
thank you. i have duty tmrw morning and due to my high anxiety and stress I really cant imagine myself participating in this. thanks to you mentioning claustrophobia I now feel that I shouldnt have a problem being excused due to my social anxiety especially since itll prolly be in a small room. wish me luck!
Good luck Nunya!
I have severe depression and Social anxiety, along with claustrophobia and take meds that have recently changed.
How did it work out for you? I'm to appear Mon April 2nd.
If you see a psychiatrist/therapist, they can let them know you are unfit to serve. They have a form at the office or you can use the form that the Jury duty court has online. They need to sign it and you can take it to the Jury duty/mail/fax to them. There are two boxes. one that says temporary due to mental health issues. the other box says permanent due to mental health health issues. talk to your psychiatrist or therapist. I hope that this helps.
Well, what happened?
Did it work
IMO, jury duty should be a voluntary act and not mandatory with the threat of jail at the barrel of a gun. Jury Duty = Involuntary servitude!

If you do have to go but don't want to be selected, just mention FIJA or jury nullification and you will not be selected. In fact, mentioning either in front of other prospective jurors will get them excused as well.
That's why I'm a firm believer in subscriber to the jail for judges website which teaches a lot about jury nullification second felon so doesn't matter mean let him call me up I've been waiting first with all my mouth I'm a boat not guilty no matter which way the case goes I'm still go and vote not guilty I don't like judges and judges don't like me and I know how to deal with judges if they force me to serve good I'm still going to vote not guilty and then when the trial is over with more followed you just to complain on his ass and then I'ma find a way to doctors ask I don't care how much it pays I'm going to find something some kind of little titbit and then hit the social media I'm not going to pin on my local TV station they can't be trusted damn straight I'm glad I'm a felon I'm glad I got a record the court fuck the judges go to the website jail for judges
I've been chosen for jury duty 6 times in my life so far. I sat there in the waiting room for often times more than 1/2 a day and never once got picked to serve. Extremely boring, uncomfortable, and a big waste of my time, money for parking, and gas to get there.
Some of the people that DID get called to go into the courtroom, to be a potential juror, looked questionable to me. I would've been worried if they were on a jury that was about to judge me. 😬
Thanks so much for sharing this!
I had jury duty. I went for nothing because when we had orientation, afterwards we took a break when we came back the case had already settled before we even stepped in the court room. I was furious! We all wasted our time and money. We lost a day's work. The wost thing is that we still on call until the end date. This is slavery!
Thanks for sharing @Jennifer that happens often.

Very nice. Extremely helpful. I know this was five years ago, but congrats for providing an avenue for those of us with legit concerns.
Time doesn't matter- we update if things change. Happy to help!
In my jury response paper, I told them if I was selected I needed an extra large chair due to my weight and have a medical condition that requires my use of the restroom up to twice an hour, with no prior warning. I was excused and have never been asked again

They should pay jurors , you don't need to do jury duty for pocket change to do civic duty, they treat jurors {pee ons} just a step above the accused ! Every other so called public servant in the court house is getting six figures { and loaded with self importance} to be there.
Thanks for the comment @Robert What amount would you think would be fair?
@@FinelyRevealed I think $ 200.00 per day minimum. Nobody should loose money to serve for sure. People should think of it as lucky to get a chance to do jury duty. Part of it is feeling society is greatful for your time. Being the only ones doing their duty, for almost nothing, and under threat of fines or arrest isn't the best way to get the public's enthusiastic cooperation.
Thanks for the suggestion @Robert
I’m actually one of the few unlucky ones that got summoned. I feel like $150-$200 is fair seeing how they picked me and my fellow jurors who’s age falls between 30-70 years of age. We all got incomes that pay more than the $15 dollar/ day.
@@FinelyRevealed 500 for the summons and an average of whatever the layers are being paid. So if on the defense they are paying $1500 an hour than thats what jury should get. Let the judges work for free.
Thank you so much for the information.

I'm a stay at home mom and my husband works so much. Yet I get called almost every year. I can't be away from my kids I'm the only one here. This is harassing
So sorry @PiggyAzalea - they have no way to know it's 'you' again. It's just the pick of the draw.
I wish the court would leave me alone and quit sending their garbage paper work to fill out to me.To me jury duty is a waste of time and I am not made for this.sitting in a chair for a day is a waste of time doing nothing at all. This is how I see it.
Sorry for your frustration wafrederick - there is usually an age limitation so keep celebrating those birthdays and you'll eventually age out of the system.
I had enough and want them to stop mailing this garbage mail to me to fill out.I warned them to stop doing this and they don't listen.
what is that age limitation for jury duty?..my old man is 80 and recently received a summons. How can he be excused? His health is in decline.Thanks!..
If you have to use the restroom, they will not permit you to leave the courtroom. Do they expect you to sit there with your soiled underwear and still stay focused on everything else?
Thanks for your helpful information. I was so nervous about jury duty.
Thanks @Rupa no need to be nervous -
What if I tell them I just recently have to go to court for the murder of my relative and that I don't trust law enforcement..
There one the reason I move from NYC. I told king county last year that I am in disability no longer work because chronic back pain. I am on a walker. Know I am in other state. Know?
what happens when a guy asks the court if others in the jury pool are aware of jury nullification? are they aware they may judge the law? what a great juror he would make, eh?
Yes Who! Jury Nullification video is in the works!
And I served to be Jury duty two time. What do with this problem I move after Labor Day last year.
I got excused from jury service in the UK today which was due to start on the 29th March because there were more jurors than needed so a lady phoned me in advance saying I wouldn't be need so I'll be working my normal job three of the days before the Easter holidays.
what about health issues> i am a burn victim- 41% of my back burned off from a fireball hitting my back in aug. 2019...climbing steps to get into the courthouse affects my breathing , that still needs day to day help at times...
Hi @sapphirerings they can make accommodations if necessary - contact them to see if that is or is not possible depending upon the set up of the courtroom and your condition. Obviously if you are still healing and have a sensitive area that may be disturbed they will likely give you a postponement from service at this time.
I'm being evicted a week before my court date. I think that's a pretty good reason.
Yes @cyberronin - hope it works out!
Thank you! Those are all good suggestions you gave, but how about the excuse that you're just ticked off that the city/county government is FORCING you to appear in court as a potential juror against your will.
Also, the more I think about it, the more I agree with the concept of jury nullification. This wouldn't apply in every case of course, and I want to be honest about it, but if a defendant is charged with breaking a law that I firmly believe to be immoral or unjust, there's no way I'm going to convict them of breaking that particular unjust law.
thank you!!!
My reason is this: I don’t live regularly live in the county anymore (San Diego) of where the summons is taking place. My mailing address and driver license is there and I still come to San Diego but only a month or two of the year now. I take care of my 77 year old mother now in San Jose, CA. So I’m there most of the time. Got a summons and notified them asap online as the county has that option. So basically I did it right ? I responded the same day that my friend at the mailing address told me about the summons.
San Diego ♥️ I miss that place most of the time
I am a Caregiver for my Mom and I sent the card back with a letter and explained that and told them if requested I will submit a Dr statement stating that for them, Also I am all ready in Counseling my self due to stressful situations
I am currently in stress leave and I do pick up my kids from school because my wife is from college and I also take care of my brother he’s disabled
I am a self employed single-op contractor, I work with clients to run entertainment services within the night club industry several nights per week. I work from 4pm to 2am every day, so not only does serving on a jury impact my biological schedule, it means that if I have to serve for more than a week, someone else will be hired to take over my contract in my absence, and there is no guarantee that I would even have that job when I returned. I explained this to the judge, yet I am still compelled to serve. This could potentially cost me my lively-hood. There IS no justice.
Hi Michael. To clarify- is the judge asking that you obey the summons and report for jury duty to then proceed through the process of jury selection or has this gone beyond that and you have actually been included on a jury and the judge would not let you off? If it is the former then please tell counsel at any/every opportunity. Attorneys do NOT want people serving on a jury who do NOT want to be there. One of them should use their peremptory challenge and excuse you.
Thank you - I will do that. For now, I have managed to get a one year deferment. it seems to me that it would be a hell of a lot more efficient if they just allowed self employed people to opt out rather than waste the courts time.
funny when you think trump is hitler but sleepy joe brandon actually is. fucking clown dick.
FinelyRevealed --- I've been called for jury duty but I am the **only** income. $12 just to appear and NOT be selected for jury alone will NOT be sufficient for my household (much less $25 per day if i do have to show up to jury/trial dates). Is this LEGIT REASON enough to be excused? Because I can not provide for my family at all on that kind of 'compensation', which $12 or $25 is NOT compensation. that's just BS IMO
Hi Kat- most definitely you should contact the jury coordinator and tell them that any service - even showing up to the first day- would impose an undue hardship on your family. Best of luck!
I have terrible anxiety and depression and learning disability’s is that good enough excuse to get out of Jury Duty?
HI @Rob You could ask for a permanent exemption if you are emotionally and intellectually unable to serve but usually they give excuses on a per call basis until you reach around age 70 when you then become exempt.
I'm a combat veteran. PTSD and back injuring and can't sit up for an hour. I take pills for my pain and anxiety. I hate being in large crowds because of what happen. Will this get me out?
Hi @sthompson211 Jurors are required to sit for a few hours at a time. If you are unable to do that contact the juror coordinator and find out what type of information they would like to support that. They would look at your physical pain plus the additional medication that could impair your judgment during the trial.

Would my phobia of jury duty excuse me from serving on the jury?
Hi @Dulaya if you have a doctor's note- possibly but each case is determined by the local people individually.
What do I do if they refuse to listen to my doctor who has filled out their forms TWICE saying that I can NEVER serve on a jury because of my medical conditions? They keep sending summons' and are forcing me to show up under duress or face fines I cannot pay or face jail time for something that is not even a crime against my doctors orders because it's something I physically and mentally CANNOT do! They are not only forcibly putting me in a position that will cause me bodily harm, but will also violate my 13th Amendment right that protect me against involuntary servitude. I can't find a lawyer that is willing to take my case against them because they're all in cahoots. They should have no right to do this! Any help would be appreciated.
Hi @Phamm As with anything where you have dissatisfaction you try at the base level and then go to the supervisor. In a court system there is an administrative judge who handles the 'business' type matters.
@@FinelyRevealed Thank you so much for your reply! Most of the time when I call in, these people have a IDGAF attitude and have no problem being rude, dismissive, uncooperative and downright nasty sometimes and I guarantee you that it is unprovoked. They treat you as if you're a slave that must comply, OR ELSE! I sent a letter as I was instructed directly to the Jury Commissioner, but I haven't heard back and my duty date is closing fast. Either she hasn't received it yet or they're ignoring my request. What do I do if I've exhausted all administrative options, even up to the judge, and they still choose to ignore my doctor by refusing to grant it to me? I don't expect you to have all the answers to something so complex and seemingly insurmountable, but you're the only person I've been able to talk to that has knowledge of this crappy system of "justice" that doesn't already work at that corrupt courthouse. Sorry if this was too long. Just frustrated and at the end of my rope with this.
I’m registering to vote soon, and I was doing some research on jury duty and what is involved. I have anxiety, panic attacks, and ADHD, could you explain the most effective way for me to be excused for any of these reasons? I’ve read a few different ways, and I don’t know which ones they’d be more likely to excuse me.
Hi @XAmerican it would depend upon when you get anxiety, panic attacks and what problems you have with the ADHD and how any of that would be triggered or you otherwise impacted by sitting in a chair and listening quietly which is all that jury duty requires you to do. There are breaks every hour to 90 minutes and an hour or longer lunch.
Hi I have a question
I was on schedule to assist the first time to jury duty but after 2 weeks I have call to to reporting instruction but it said that I not have to report for jury duty that day however I have call the same day I was scheduled later on for reporting instruction or cancelation.
What does it means????
HI @Liz Wow- that is pretty confusing. Call the coordinator now and ask them to please clarify and if possible send you an email or text for clarification. Some court matters are being postponed and it may have to do with that.

HI @stewart If you have age-related issues you might mention those. Age by itself is not always a disqualifier- the knowledge and wisdom you possess is valuable.

If i mention jury nullification in the uk while in front of the judge will that get me dismissed?
HI @Mephisto The Judges do not have sway over the jury selection - so if the topic comes up and the subject is mentioned it will be up to the barristers.
... how much of a fine will I have to pay for skipping jury duty and will it go on my criminal record?
Hi @eddy - It is different in every jurisdiction. It would not be a criminal infraction- but a civil fine. Truly not a big deal to show up - you could be there an hour or two and then done for a year or forever. Better than taking a fine but your choice. If you are put on the jury- look at it as you could be the difference for one of the parties.

I just moved to a new address. In a friends home. Can't afford to live alone. Have neuropathy, fibromyalgia, spinal stenosis, osteoarthritis- thats not all. My daiky energy sapped in 5 hrs on average. Been on disability 19 yrs from ailments and I'm 64. Now I get a notice of jury duty. I did call about how difficult it is to do daily chores, had an exempt from jury duty card- but the "A" holes lose it? Because they changed the system/ updated? I very may well still be homeless because of financial issues my friend has. Then being forced to spent 8 hrs among those I usually keep away from. Don't even have decent clothes, just a few casual type shurts/ pants. Have no suit, only sneakers because of foot bone growths. I did jury duty before. Hate it passionately. As some poster stated- did no crimes but get arrested for no show.
Hi im deaf in one ear and wear a hearing aid in the other ear its heard to hear and understand word and sentence what do you do
Many courts have listening aids- they hang around your neck and collect the sound like a reverse speaker and then there is a piece you put in your ear.
What if your whole family depends on your income? Like will the government allow you to go without food and home to serve on jury duty?
Most people go, spend an hour or two and then are finished.

I don't know if you'll respond to this, but I just got a consideration postcard from the county courthouse. THis is my first time getting this. I'm almost 25. She requires round-the clock supervision (not watching over her like a hawk, but being there for her episodes were she's homicidal/suicidal). We live on her income and it's well under a grand a month, so we can't afford a car. I personally have bowel problems and I never know when I'll have to use the bathroom. I've heard of some judge's being difficult on jurors, but most times they will pass you up. Any advice?
Hi Texan Tube- reach out to the jury coordinator as soon as possible to communicate your situation. Not sure the distance you are from the courthouse but that transportation issue alone as well as being a care giver should satisfy them that it would be a hardship for you to serve. Good luck!

I really get nervous with things like this, like really, really nervous...
I’ve always been like this, at stuff like this at school or school trips I’ve always passed out and i really don’t want to pass out in court, Will they excuse me?
Hi @ItzSpoons - no need to be nervous- you are just watching the action and then working with others on a decision. Most who show for the jury pool spend an hour or two and are then excused. Just go and sit in the back- should be fine.
@@FinelyRevealed so ur not actually in the same room as the criminal most the time then?

HI Peace - possibly. IF the medication impairs your ability to understand, follow along etc or causes you to be sleepy. If it's due to social situations that might be something that could get you out without showing up. If you have to appear they will ask question re whether you can function in every day life and if the answer is yes or is obviously yes then that won't get you excused.

Courts are not fair; notice the prosecutor gets to sit next to the jury while the defense has to sit far away. The prosecutor gets to coach witnesses while the defense is not allowed. Note the judge can disallow any defense for any reason. Defense lawyers are not allowed to even mention jury nullification. The list goes on and on.
I have severe anxiety/anxiety attacks and claustrophobia. Can this pass as an excuse? I’m 19 and just got summoned for my first jury duty and I’m terrified
Hi @mysmarvel - This is absolutely nothing to be terrified about. Courtrooms are big spaces and there are always stairs so you do not have to take elevators. Go with the mindset to be taking a tour of the courthouse and to see what people show up- there may be someone there you know or you will make a new friend. Sit in back and you will probably be there only a few hours and then done.

I don't have kids but do they ask for proof if I give that excuse anyone?
I’m a full time college student who doesn’t have time to do jury duty
Hi @Kevin - everyone is busy so when you report to them and request your excuse focus on your obligations and the penalties to you if you miss them.
I have sent a doctors statement online to the court....that states I have a Herniated
disc and cannot sit for longer than 20 minutes, the jury supervisor assistant replied that my request has been denied. If I have to sit through this I am going to be miserable. Why even ask for a Doctors note if they ignore it? Tomorrow is the day. we'll see how it goes.
HI @jvideos8 wow- that is surprising. The jury supervisor is an administrative person and once you get into a courtroom the deputy, judge and attorneys will consider your situation. Position yourself in the back of the room or definitely on an aisle seat so that you can stand up - make sure you tell the people in charge of your situation so that they understand what you are doing in advance. I predict you will be in an out of there quickly.
Correction: The Assistant Jury Supervisor is the one who responded to my two requests which included my doctors statement. I met him face to face today... and this character has power trip issues. My brother went through jury duty several years ago and said, "They've heard it all...and are suspicious of people trying to get out of jury duty" But even my brother thought the guy was overboard with his attitude. (My brother drove me there and was allowed in the room at that stage) Anyway! I had to pace the floor several times as I felt numbness begin in my right foot. walking/standing helps little as the nerve is aggravated an the pain starts immediately after sitting back down.
The Deputy Court Administrator / Jury Supervisor came in and was fantastic, very professional.
Don't recall the name of the room we were in...pre-courtroom, they had those who requested a hardship to stand in line and speak to the Judge & Jury Supervisor in a private room. The Judge seemed like a good guy.. no attitude and seemed caring.
I showed him my documentation and let him know that I've had this issued for a year now, and it is getting worse...but at this point the doctor doesn't want to do surgery. The Judge said he would give me a postponement and I would have to come back in 6 months, not what I was hoping for as most likely I will still have the same issue.
The paper they handed me states you are allowed one postponement... and excused only "if it is an extreme emergency to include items such as death in the family, sudden grave illness. or natural disaster in which the juror is personally involved. that could not have been anticipated at the time the initial postponement was granted. If you seek further postponement you will be required to provide documentation demonstrating an extreme emergency as set forth above."
Wow!
This evening I am soaking my foot in a tub of cool water to ease the burning/tingling from sitting for an hour today. I don't know how I'm gonna get through it six months from now.
Hate to say this but since you think the condition will worsen- maybe you should have toughed it out this time as the attorneys and the judge would have excused you IF you had been in the front 15 people. If you are in the back of the room during the venire when the questions etc are asked you are then excused and you have been considered to have 'served' your time. Also depending upon where you live (how populous it is) it's not an automatic 'call back' but just means you will stay in the system and might be called. Please don't stress about it- your brother had a good take on this- if there are a lot of people looking for ways out and so they get a little cynical.
They asked several times "If there is anyone who feels they needed to be excused for hardship to come forward" - Had I waited till later during the venire they would have asked why I didn't come forward earlier when asked. also, I was feeling numbness in my foot/leg as I set for an hour already and didn't want to sit another hour.
Looks like that will be the case next time though... I will speak to the Attorneys and let it be known that sitting for long period of time will become increasingly painful. I understand the cynical part... but, they surely don't expect someone to sit through this in pain and determine their decision based on someones appearance, especially when I have x-rays and doctors diagnosis going back a year.
The court website gives daily updates... I checked before leaving the house the other day and it showed those with the sequence number of 0211 or higher is excused for the next three years. my number was 0200. - just my luck! lol And my new court date in 6 months falls on my birthday. that'll be easy to remember. Thanks for the advice!
What if a trial may last 2 seasons! I have a trip in Oct. A consult for surgery in mid Oct. 2 other doctors appointments and oh U'm a personal trainer. My business rely on clients playing me. I will lose them all if on a jury for both fall through December. I won't be able to pay my rent either. 10 dollars a day. I make between $450-650 a day. I need the money to also be able to afford my surgery..
I tried to get exempt early, but the judge denied it. I'm trying again. Just hoping they leave me alone. This is causing me much anxiety.
Please don't stress Monica- just go and sit in the back and one of the first questions asked will be if there is anyone with a reason they can't be there for however many days the case will last- if that covers your travel time just tell them. No one wants someone on their jury who will be distracted about getting out of town etc.
Thank you! I got excused! Thank god!!
my sister has jury duty but cant go becuase there noway she cant get there she does not drive what can she do
HI @Terry She should arrange for a ride- friend, relative, neighbor, uber, cab etc. The notices go out fairly far in advance and unless she lives in a remote area that is not going to be a winning excuse.
Can I get off Jury Duty for religious reasons? Im about to cry I cant take this I really don’t think God wants me to do this, and neither do I.
Yeah u can actually
Closterphobia! I'll try it - thanks!
Civic duty my ass...Look, it's this simple. I wouldn't want ME on MY own jury. I have attention deficit, I can't focus, I wouldn't pay attention to details, I would be thinking about all the other shit I need to do. Not conducive to an fair trail. No thanks. I would go along with what everyone else decided just to get the hell out of there. EVEN IF I DISAGREED. Think about that when you insist I "due my civic duty" Remember this, there's innocent men and women sitting in prison right now because jurors like me were in the box. Choose the guy smiling and jogging in place with excitement to "due his duty and serve" That's the guy you want. There's tons of those Bozos.
Thanks @Havaseet2
JURY NULLIFICATION is MY 1st ANSWER TO ANY QUESTION
For a criminal case - that could work
If u recently moved and they want you to serve where u use to live can you transfer to a closer court location?
Hi @Maddiee - the jury is to be from the residents in the area of the court. If you are no longer in that area then you should be excluded from serving there. Reach out to the coordinator and tell them you have moved. There may have been a lag on the time from when they got the records and when you changed your address on your drivers license and voter registration etc.
What if your significant other relies on you for transportation to and from work and you can't afford to be required to be away all day?
Hi Jack - it just depends on your circumstances and how many they need as a pool to choose one or more juries that day. Reach out to the coordinator in advance and explain your situation- It is an inconvenience for everyone called so in order to be excused you have to have some particular reason that makes you different than the rest. If your other can catch a ride with someone for one day that should probably be arranged - then go and you may only be there an hour or two.
If you check the box for one of the exemptions, does the court try to verify or will they just trust you?
That may depend upon what the exemption is and whether they have a very heavy trial docket- if they need many people. Usually they would accept it however in our jurisdiction I have seen the questionnaires with those but the people are not excused- the Judge wants them to come in and participate. They may then decide they could serve - if they cannot we recognize that and then excuse them.
@@FinelyRevealed In my case, I got a summons for a county court in a suburb of Houston. My appearance date is July 18th at 12:30 which is 10 days after Hurricane Beryl came roaring through. According to the court's website, dockets will be held as scheduled, however resets for individuals unable to appear will be granted upon request. Something tells me I will be just one of a handful of jurors to show up.
100% guarantee to get out of jury duty....write letter saying you want to serve and are a long-time supporter of the Fully Informed Jury Association but are afraid your (fill in the blank) will be a distraction to the court and you do not want to be a distraction.
The court will excuse you because of the FIJA remark (not legal) but justify it via the distraction issue (legal).
My wife works full time. I quit my job 1 year ago to accommodate her career. 5 days a week I take our 7 year old daughter to school at 8am and our 3 year old daughter 3 days starting at 9am. I work part time when they are in school but I need to pick them both up at 1:00 PM. I just recieved a summons for jury duty today. This stresses me out because I have anxiety issues. I don't want to use my kids as an excuse to get out of it but is this ok? I would say I'm they're primary care giver. My mother in law picks them up when she can but she cant take them in the mornings and my wife is out the door by 6am to 7am everyday. My parents live an hour away and my father in law is in traveling sales. What can i do????
Hi Dennis- what you do is contact the jury coordinator and tell them exactly this- not the anxiety issues but simply the schedule and the drop off and pick up times plus the job- and the ages of your children. The sooner you contact them the better. If the jury coordinator does not give you a pass- then still keep your cool and go to the court on the assigned date and at the beginning the judge or attorneys will ask for those who cannot serve- then tell this again and one of the attorneys should let you out. Good luck!
FinelyRevealed. Thank you for responding! What worries me the most is speaking in front of people. I simply cannot do this. Otherwise it wouldn't be a big deal. Is there any way I can get the jury coordinator to let me off without having to go in? Otherwise I'm considering ignoring it altogether and crossing my fingers that nothing becomes of it. My anxiety terrifies me and so much that I'm willing to take the risk. I honesty do take care of my kids as previously stated so I'm hoping that I can lean on this without going in. If I have to go in I may need to find xanax to help with this and I don't want to have to do that.
Oh Dennis please don't build this up into a bigger thing than it is- there is not always any speaking in front of people unless you volunteer something. Most of the attorneys ask for a show of hands for broad, general questions. The questions are then follow ups to those "raise your hand if'" types of things. Just communicate by phone if you can with the jury coordinator and tell him or her that you are the caretaker for your 2 young children and you don't have any back up now so it is a hardship for you to appear even for the first day. I am hoping you will report back that you are excused!!
FinelyRevealed thank you so much for the response. I emailed the court clerk this morning explaining the situation and she emailed me an affidavit form to fill out. There's a caretaker exemption box for me to check and all i have to do is get it notarized and email it back to them for approval. Fingers crossed 🤞 and thanks again!
Awesome! Good job :)
I live in a small town with no public transportation and I was summoned to appear in another town within the county. I don't have a car or anyone in this town who can drive me back and forth to this other town. The jury commissioner told me on the phone that absolutely no on gets excused due to transportation problems. If I were to take a cab there and stay there at a hotel, it would cost about $1000 per week. My current cash on hand is practically zero at the moment. I have no idea what to do. I really need help.
What ended up happening?
The weekend before the summons, we were required to call an automated phone recording for instructions. The recording said that everyone scheduled for summons were not needed and were excused. It said I wouldn't be called to another summons for at least 3 years.
I got excused by standing on my ground
How to get out of jury
does caring for an elderly count as an excuse? do I need to provide proof?
Hi Amy It will depend on the situation. Just call the jury coordinator and tell them. Caretaking can be an excuse to push the service off for a year or maybe longer.
Can religious reason work I dont believe I can judge something life until day of judgement day and it's against my relgion
HI @Saleem That would be something to tell at the time you appear for jury duty and if you are called for a criminal case.
I have trouble writing and reading would I not get pick
Hi @King If the case involves many documents and you think you are within the group that will be retained for the jury you can ask to speak to the judge in private and tell him or her this.
I told them they let me go thank tho
I am permanently excused due to medical reasons.
I just wear my jury nullification t- shirt, dismissed
Always good to have a plan!
jdsvtx where can I get one?
Yes, where did you get yours..
I just got called for jury duty. I wrote them a letter requesting to be excused because I am caring for 2 disabled siblings and unable to make arrangements for their care.
Hi @Dee It is good that you reached out early.
@@FinelyRevealed I just hope they grant it. Will let you know.
@@FinelyRevealed Well, got my notice today that I am excused.
@@darlene5216 Glad to know this because I am a Caregiver for my Mom shes 81 and I am all she has to help her, I can not be used for this
@@hope3761 Did you get called for Jury Duty?
I can canceled because my daughter she go to school at 8:30am to 2:30pm ?
HI @ouiza - most courts are postponing matters so you may not have to go- check with the jury coordinator to be sure. Lack of childcare can also be a valid reason to postpone.
FinelyRevealed and my son is 2 years old I take care of them and I don’t have family here to help me I should call them to told them my situation
