What Is Jury Duty? | Your Role as a Juror
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- In this video, discover what to expect if you are called up for jury duty. Your role as a juror is an important one - you need to carefully consider all the evidence presented to you during the triaI and, together with your fellow jurors, decide if the defendant is guilty or not guilty.
We first explain how jurors are selected and the exemptions that mean you are not eligible for jury duty. If you have been selected, you are expected to attend court every day of your duty period. We take you through the fines you can occur if you miss your jury duty, how long jury duty is expected to last, and what you will be doing on a day-to-day basis.
You will see the inside of a courtroom so you can familiarise yourself with the space. We guide you through who's who in a courtroom, from the judge to the court usher, and where you will sit in the jury box. We explain the juror's oath - which you repeat to be sworn in as a juror - and the options if you do not want to swear on a holy book.
In the trial, you will first listen to the case for the prosecution and hear any witnesses be called and cross-examined. Then it is the turn of the defence, who represent the defendant. When all the evidence has been given, the prosecution and defence will present their closing arguments directly to you. The judge will summarise the case and explain what is expected of you.
As a jury, you and your fellow jurors will leave the court to deliberate on a verdict. During this time, you will discuss the evidence and cast individual votes on whether you think the defendant is guilty or not guilty. You must not discuss the details of the case with anyone other than your fellow jurors and you must not search the internet for any information on the case. It is a serious offence to reveal anything discussed in the jury room, and can result in a fine or even a prison sentence.
You are expected to reach a unanimous verdict, but we explain what happens if you do not all reach the same verdict. We will take you through exactly what happens during and after the verdict is delivered.
If you are a juror who has been called for jury duty in the UK, we encourage you to watch this video and pay close attention to what is expected of you. It's an important legal obligation but we are aware it can be disruptive to your day-to-day life. We are grateful for your participation and cooperation.

This is a helpful video, especially the reminder to take the summons letter and ID with you, as this isn't stated on the summons.
I've just finished my first jury service and sat on two trials. I was a bit anxious to start with, most people are but it was a rewarding experience ultimately.
Maaaaan I just got a letter and I’m only 18 dammit. I didn’t even know this was a thing. I’m just a child! Save me. And I have so much anxiety 😭
tell your doctor you are to stressed out for it, they will recommend you dont do jury service , tell the court in writing or e-mail .giving your doctors contact details and you'll be discharged.
@nunchaku101 depends, if you work you can get out of work lol
Some pathetic comments here. If someone doesn't want to do jury duty they should never us the NHS, never claim any State benefits, never us the police or fire service, never use public roads, never vote and never expect to be treated as a citizen in a _more or less_ civilised country.
And why are so many Americans commenting on this video which about the British jury system - aimed basically for people who have been summoned to do jury service.
.
Dont register to vote and you can't be called up. You can only be called up if you are on the electoral list
The adversarial system which uses jury trials is deeply flawed. You're an excellent example of why we should do away with jury trials. I would not want an idiot like you serving on a jury if I was a defendant.
I have jury service tomorrow guys
The only crime is the video being in 480p
I’m so excited for jury duty!!! I’ve been waiting for this my entire life, and I get the letter. I can’t wait to hear the case!
I found this very interesting and well presented. Thank you.
The fact that it will interfere with my university and that doesnt count as a valid reason for excursion is absurd. All I can do is reschedule within a year time frame, at which point if I'm further inconvenienced what then?? Mental.
I agree, that’s what I’m most upset about, I’m missing my first week back
Surprised to hear that. I was summoned when I was at uni. I must admit it was about 3 weeks before my exams, and I had to submit projects. I asked my tutor for a letter explaining the situation and I was excused.
I will most certainly not consider my decision carefully, I will definitely immediately say guilty and suggest the death sentence even though it’s been abolished
😂😅😂
Looooool
If I get picked then they better give me written instructions of everything I need to do because I don't want to fuck anything up. I have horrible memory when given to me verbally. Plus I have social anxiety.
yes this is what scares me the most about being on a jury. same problem as you. I was called up once, waited several hours in a room only to be told the case was settled and they don't need us. Now I've been called up again and I'm hoping that this case also is settled before it goes to a jury
Don't worry about poor memory - I am currently on a jury in a criminal trial and they provide each of us with printouts of all relevant documents and photos. Every word that is spoken by each person is taped and we may ask to hear those tapes later. Additionally, we are allowed to make our own notes with the pens and paper that they supply to us.
Of course they do

Those fake wigs are ridiculous. Why even wear them? Are they magical and supposed to help with "fair decision making" or something or just to look ridiculous and funny? 😂
they are to give the idiots who participate in this medievil pantomime some sense of importance - as if one person can tell another what to do - then call it a law - no one owns the world, it's shared by us all
The UK courts rely on people who don't want to be there to try and give an honest verdict hopefully helping to protect the innocent and convict the guilty . If we left it only to those who would too eagerly serve there would be no balance left at all in justice.
And if that dose not work for you,, think about this.
Who would stand up to protect you from wrong or those who would do you harm should you need it. If you would not stand up for others why should they. and yes I am one of those who dose not want to go but will !
A minority of countries use trial by jury. The countries with the best legal systems do not use jury trials.
This is bullshit to be honest
How so exactly?
Umm, I have work, and they don't pay me. Also, I have school. Like I have the time to judge idiots getting into trouble. They choose when and what time I HAVE TO REPORT. It's so dumb
We all have to work. In my area judges are pretty good about excusing people if they are attending school while also working. Reporting when the courts need jurors is just the way it works. The only way to have a chance at fair trials for people is to have citizen juries. Not everything is about you.

So are you done yet or not??
Just been summoned going to lose loads of money doing this....that's what's pissing me off the most and making me feel like I can't be arsed to do it
The jury system is the cornerstone of our justice system. It is ordinary people that decide a person's guilt or innocence, and is an important civic duty, whether we like it or not. As a juror you could find an innocent person guilty, and that may well have serious negative consequences to that person, all because you 'can't be arsed'. You may also let a dangerous person free, to inflict more pain on some unfortunate person, or persons. Again, just because you 'cannot be arsed.' It can be stressful and unpleasant, but it is important.
I have been summoned and as a self-employed person it is going to be disruptive and I will be out of pocket but I believe it is my duty as a citizen to do this to the best of my ability.
I be scared to mess anything up if I was on jury service, I know you can pass a note to the clerk to hand to the judge but if you are one of these people who are asking lots of questiosn or unsure you probably be asked to leave
Stupid why force random people to do something they don’t want to do
Coastliner700 well if someone is really unable to do it like business, responsibilities, aboard, education then you don’t have to do it, it just needs a valid reason
I'm getting payed for my service
coz no fucker would do it otherwise
Coastliner700 Because the alternative is precisely what you complain about. Or do you want someone to come round to your house, break in, arrest you, lock you up and throw away the key just because you disagree with the law? Think it through before calling it stupid. It isn't.
That is tyranny, so you are going to hold a gun to my head and force me to go to jury duty? and under the 4th amendment you cannot go into my home without a valid warrant, and under the constitution section 3 "No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law". I do not consent to jury duty and thus they cannot make me do it. leg.wa.gov/LawsAndAgencyRules/Pages/constitution.aspx

That is incorrect BB Gem. You don't know anything about the juror when they are swearing in so how would you know if they are racist? You can challenge them if you know them. Then they can't sit on that trial.

No, but you can claim back (with receipts etc as proof) travel/ accom expenses and for any loss of earnings.
Only upto £80.08 per day which as far as I am concerned is not enough. The electoral register. Does this mean someone who isn't registered to vote never gets summoned for jury service? Too bad the jury boxes in the USA don't have a surface on which to take notes. It is interesting that the judge may accept a jury decision which is not unanimous. All criminal cases must have a unanimous vote in the USA while civil cases are a simple or 2/3rd majority. Also different in the USA is that we can be called every year for jury duty.
If you are not registered to vote, you will not be called upon for Jury Service. In general, everyone of voting age (aged 16 or over) will be on the electoral register. There is no legal requirement to be on the electoral register unless you have been asked by your local authority but decline (you can be fined). In some cases, you may be exempted from the electoral register (these are mostly in related to health problems though there may be other justifications for exemption). In the UK there are two versions of the Electoral Register, the Full version and the Open version. The full version is used for the Voting Register, for the prevention and detection of crime and for validating applications for financial services. The open version of the electoral register is something that can be purchased, but is also something an electorate can request to be removed from (without impacting the right of that person to vote).
If you were not present on the electoral register, your life in UK would be quite complicated. No credit whatsoever. No mobile phone contract. Pre-paid electricity meters only. Insane premiums for car insurance... So no, usually everybody who is eligible (UK, EU and Commonwealth citizens) WANTS to be on the electoral register. The problem is that many people - students in particular - may not live at the registered address, which may cause some confiusion.
Thought that was Jimmy page in the dock for a second there...
2:18 CM Punk?
lol yeah Nice shirt. He is also going on Jury trial in a month against WWE doctor. Lets see who wins.
if it lasts longer? Is it the next day ?
I’m trying to interpret your question, assuming your comment is about the duration of duty, yes you’ll spend more than one day to hear all the evidence and details of the defense plan. It won’t be a “fast food” operation since you are dealing with someone’s future. You shouldn’t slack or cut corners, if you’re on the other side you’d want them to genuinely engage
When planning their lists courts routinely guesstimate how long each trial is likely to last. Jury summonses are for ten days, so assuming you are then selected you could end up serving anything from just one day to the full ten. Very complex trials can last much longer, for which court staff presumably ask around in advance for jurors able to serve more than their standard ten days. SFAIK every overrunning trial always resumes on the court's next sitting day, so when planned to finish on a Friday it will resume on the following Monday. But if you are serving on a trial that overruns within the ten days that you would have blocked out already, that's no problem!
If people are selected "purely at random", that means you could be a permanent juror -being selected over and over and over.
If you have just served on a jury you are exempt for 2 years
I am in the USA, and many of the things they are saying in the UK are the same here. I always like the wigs though, that doesn't happen here LOL! I was interested in the statement that in some cases, the judge may not require a unanimous verdict. Is that in the example of civil cases? That is the case here in California that civil cases can be decided with a 10 to 2 verdict, but criminal cases must be unanimous. It's criminal cases were allowed to not be unanimous, I think it would greatly reduce the number of mistrials we have here in the USA. Again, we should be learning from the mother country actually
Very few civil trials in England have juries now, such as libel/slander/ civil fraud. Judges expect unanimous verdicts if possible, but can agree to accept a 10-2 majority of 'guilty'. Scotland has 15-member juries and only a simple majority is needed to convict; it's also famous for the alternative acquittal verdict of 'not proven'.
Come on guys, look at it this way,
my father and grandfather were conscripted to fight in wars. My fathers sister lost an eye whilst aiming a Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft gun at a German plane.
All we are required to do is sit through a few live episodes of Judge Judy then hold a business meeting.
Get a sense of proportion.
To be honest, I have a lot of mixed feelings. I just became eligible to be selected for jury duty and a part of me is actually interested. Sure it could be long and boring, but as someone with a psychology major, I think it would be really great experience to have to think long and hard about what might be going on inside the mind of a criminal to be able to commit a crime, whether it be a large scale one or just a small offense. Sure I'll miss school, miss work, miss time with my family, but I think it'd be good life experience and force me to toughen up on the inside. That is if I get chosen because the chances are pretty small and I could even just be sent away after the interview. Who knows?
I feel the same way
If we are obligated to go in the U.S. then i guess we havent be living in a free country like we were told we were and btw im going next week missing a day at my job which i think i would probably sleep through the whole proces
Just got called in. Oh no.
What does that mean? Are you abroad in Turtulla now?
This one contradicts the one in NI which I had assumed would be the same law. Jurors would never be called out anywhere by name, only by number. 1:37
Jurors in Australia are called by name and number during jury selection, but thereafter just by juror number.
SparksWillFly I have served on the jury in Scotland where they called out jurors citation numbers and full name in front of the accused upon selection. I was surprised by this but apparently it is standard procedure.
Wait. Do they actually wear those wigs in court? Because that's hilarious.
WolfireGaming It's tradition and yes they do wear the wigs.
In Crown courts, yes, they do have to wear them because it involves barristers and judges. It's a cultural thing - a lot of British and Commonwealth countries do it too. The apocryphal tale, which is actually semi-true (other than pure tradition) is that it is to disguise themselves/hide their identities from criminals.
@@cardwitch91 They wore the wigs because back then everyone else did, they just wore them because they could but then they stuck with them. That's where it comes from apparently.
They can be removed at the discretion of the judge. Its most common in cases involving children either as witnesses or accused.

I had to do community service in 1991 for shoplifting in Ohio does that disqualify me for jury duty?
UK law states disqualification for 10 years under "community order".
You have to contact your county court or search your county court website.
If you can't find the information that way:
If selected, your Jury pack will inform you of any disqualification reasons,
then declare this on the section you return.
If it was in 1991, then no. You are only permanently disqualified from jury service if your conviction results in you being jailed for more than 5 years. Since yours resulted in you being ordered to carry out community service, the disqualification period ended a long time ago.

Dont register to vote and you can't be called up. You can only be called up if you are on the electoral list
But not registering to vote is a criminal offence in this country, and can also massively damage your credit score.
@@callmebongos well it turns out I was already registered. So it's a game of luck now.
@@AngelDelight69 I've been called up for jury service. I'm sort of excited.
@@callmebongos That's fair. I feel like I wouldn't like it though
@@callmebongos I don't think it is, or if it is then it's very rarely enforced. Maybe the law changed recently though and I'm unaware.
I would never do and I don't care if I was asked and I wouldn't be paying a fine
liam young You'd go to jail then. Your choice.
shit
That wig looks ridiculous on the Black judge. Why can't you get wigs for all races?!
It’s a grey wig. No matter your race, all races have grey hair. Not only that I’m sure any ethnic minority judge is perfectly capable of arguing their own case if they feel they are being overlooked or treated unfairly. Personally I don’t think any ethnic minority judge would be bothered about wearing a grey wig.
it looks ridiculous regardless of whether your white, black or purple! pantomime costume
It looks bad on anyone hahaha
