How NOT to Get Out of Jury Duty

  • "Jury Duty" on Amazon's Freevee is so fake that it's actually pretty real. Ronald Gladden is surrounded by actors who push the limits of decency as they half-heartedly undertake their civic duty, and prospective juror Noah is willing to sacrifice his dignity if it means getting out of jury duty and going on a vacation with his girlfriend.
His grand plan rests on proclaiming that he's a racist to disqualify him from serving on the jury -- an idea he and others got from watching Peter Griffin in Family Guy. Considering that a full quarter of prospective jurors in the US don't respond to their summons, Noah's attempt to dodge a responsibility he doesn't want isn't far from reality.

Jury duty is great - it's the one time you can, with complete safety and impunity, tell the government NO. Of course only if it is justifiable to do so, don't use jury nullification just because you can, but if you feel it is proper and just to do so, then do it and don't be shy about it.

I was called for jury duty earlier this year and actually ended up on the jury. I know what jury nullification is and I was prepared to exercise my right as one of the 12 most powerful people in that room. The case ended up being one that I would never use nullification on, but still I knew my rights and responsibilities as a conscientious juror.
One bonus is that because I'm a salaried engineer I was paid for the whole week I was on the jury.

My guess for what happened there is that either the defendant pleaded guilty or if it's a civil case, the defendant settled out of court.
It is actually very common for civil cases to be resolved out of court as litigation is very expensive so both parties have a huge incentive to figure it out diplomatically instead.

Tell the court system to pick college students/graduates that have or currently studied law, criminal behavior/ psychology and they will get their experts.

I’m not entirely sure what the “message” is here. Do you think randomly selected citizen juries shouldn’t be how the US does trials? Or are you just mentioning that it’s a necessary inconvenience.
In either case, it’s pretty ridiculous that businesses aren’t required to give their employees paid time off if they’re summoned (like maternity leave (if maternity leave wasn’t broken af in America anyway lol)), since it’s non optional.
Juries would probably be more focused on doing their job if they weren’t worrying about how soon they can be done with it lol.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the point of this video is either, really.
As for the other bits; businesses aren't required to compensate the employees for the duty, the state is supposed to. Problem is their compensation is crap.
Maternity leave is another matter, however, as that's voluntary. No business should be forced at gunpoint to be responsible for their employee's life choices.
And yeah, a jury would be more focused if the state wasn't a broken, crappy mess that can't order staples without f'ing it up. Then there's the whole thing about jury selection and biases and... bla bla bla.

Not to mention if you get pay it's not worth jack shit because you have to be away from work thus loose wages from that. All for something like 300 dollars if that. Some court cases can take months. Also no matter what the jury says the judge can essentially do whatever the fuck they want. Which can include throwing out a case that is against a person responsible for stealing well over 100,000 dollars from citizens. Being held on 10,000 dollars bail as the bail was sent to high and unfair. Yes the State of Vermont did that just recently with a pair of thieves responsible for a large string of breakings including one carjacking. 2 of the ones that were stolen from caught up with one of the thieves and beat the shit out of the bastard and put him in the hospital. Which could have been avoided if the judge had sentenced the crooks to jail time.
