It's important on many of those plastic sheets that you can't put them on upside down. The up side is designed to hold onto paint and overspray. On many brands the underside can collect paint but it flecks off from air (like your spray gun air) and will put bits into your fresh paint.
Exactly. The plastic I use has a shiny side and a dull side. The dull side needs to go out and will hold onto paint. The shiny side will allow paint to flake off and fall into your paint job.
Hey Brian I’m glad I found this. I’ve been watching your videos for the last 4 jobs I’ve done (I’m not professional; we own a small dealership and I do all of our own work) and my last job - new hood on a Pearl red CRV - was virtually undetectable. Confidence has gone from 0 to 95% in those 4 jobs. The is hood was ruined by stone chips left unchecked. The customer who bought it was very happy (I disclosed the hood replacement of course). I really appreciate your approach. And it helps seeing you work on $40-160,000 cars hahaha. This was great; I’ve been wondering how you mask so neatly.I’ve said it before and I will again: yes you’re an industry benchmark if a painter, but you’re also a gifted teacher. Thanks man
great video another tip is when cutting the plastic off of the backtape start at the bottom and work upwards so the plastic doesnt fall getting in the way.
Scotch tape part number 2097 is the greatest tape for masking off a car. It tears easier when done quickly it flexes beautifully, it sticks much better, when you pull it off it will not break etc etc I ordered it by mistake didn't like the way it tore until I figured out how to do it now I absolutely love it... Just masked off painted and removed on a Land cruiser I just did and now I am in love
wow i wish this channel was around last year. i painted my del sol and regret alot of things i didnt do right on my first paint job. im going to redo ALL of it with your tips
Hi Brian, one thing I noticed is b4 you backmask the perimeter of the door is to mask the opens of the door handle. To prevent overspray enter the cabin. As a certified journeymen refinished you do an excellent job with your videos.
Great teaching method for all the newies in that field.Keep going ,you are a great man with a big hearth to show and share your magic secret tricks .It is so interesting to be watched all the way you do it dude !!!Be blessed.
Same here my man. I just started and this video helped me a lot. Specially the putting foam on the door for overspray not to get inside then tape on the next door to seal it…
Gday Brian, thanks for all the great videos.. After watching most of them on paint preperation, sanding and rattle can painting for the past 4 days I will attempt to paint the back of my 1972 Mini..
I love the way you explained things you helping a lot of preppers and Painteres up there keep up the good job wish you Happy New year to you and your family also your coworkers 🤗🤗
Denatured alcohol in a pump sprayer, mist the plastic ( booth off ) to de ionize the air and remove the ability to hold a static charge. Your detailer will thank you for it. Anywhere basecoat is with in 6" of plastic, I recommend paper to keep the basecoat from seeding. Edge where fender meets the door, 2" tape attached to foam so when you close the door you can stuff it in the crack to keep base/clear from inside the door jam. Being nit picky but if you're doing work on a new car lot damage repair ( more common then you might think ) they won't be bitching about the overspray on the rubber. Great video !! The best painters were once the best preppers. A monkey can hold a pattern.
Guess who the retailer is ? You’re talking to him. We are a very very very small jobs. And we are combo men so those tips help. That plastic really creates static.
Good morning Bryan, lots of Tricks, tips, and techniques. I always learn something new from the intelligent videos. I would offer one of my techniques. I always warm my tape in an old microwave that I have in the paint mixing room, for about 15 to 20 seconds. It does wonders for tape to bend around difficult shapes. I like to chase the moisture from the tape surfaces with a heat gun, it really helps the tape adhere much better. Just my 2 cents worth. Thanks for the great video, you take care and Happy New Year.
Love the tip. Who would have thought? I’m going to try it out and next time I do a video using tape, I will mention and share your tip. Happy new year Steve and thanks again for being a part of the paint society!
Right On Bro!!! Thanks for YOUR Bad Ass clip Homie.... I have to tell you... I am Now "10" times wiser where I was not even a "1" before finding your Starting Guide and editorial for " D.I.Y" folks like myself... I can now start with full confidence on my personal vehicle I have parked in the back yard on the grass kinda painting... but still tapping and over spray protection is a no brainer when it comes to putting paint on your own Cruiser... and NOW cause of you Coach I know the step by step process what to use and how to apply it... Helll yeah I'm excited to get started here in just a little bit... thanks agian coach.
The shop I’m at sprays spies Hecker and we recently got another painter and it seems like I spend a lot of time retraining a painter with 20yrs of habits. So I try to let him not to over think things cause like u say it’s only paint..
Brian, thanks for the information just on a subject as simple as taping, now Aug. 2020, I still enjoy learning. Question: the plastic used matters from what I can tell. I have heard other painters claim certain plastics can let chunks fly off which can land in your paint. Is this one of those where you should stay with a name brand? I have seen the name brand brand product used right up to the paint line, but cheaper “Plastic is Plastic” is placed away from direct paint line and taped off to avoid overspray. Example; 1967 C10 truck with white top and later, re-tape to finish other panels. I apologize for not keeping up, but went in for L2-L3 Lumbar fusion and came out with all fused down to include the “S1” or tail bone and binge watching my favorite professional channels. Retired - ASE Master Tech since 1978.
Hi! Thanks for the great video. I have rust damage on my rear fender, on my Volvo. And there is a plastic inner fender in all 4 wheel arches. There has been a small hole in the fender edge, where the rust damage is. I know what to do when repairing such damage. I will blast clean both the outside and the inside of the fender, (after I have sanded away most of the rust). So that it is really clean. And wash it clean with IPA industrial alcohol. And then I will apply 2-3 layers of 2 component Epoxy Primer. And I will then cut a large enough piece with a fine mesh, which I will put over the hole on the inside of the fender. But I wonder if I should put fiberglass putty, and regular 2 component putty over the mesh on the inside of the fender too? Because I will do it on the outside. And sand it down really well, before applying regular 2 component putty. Thanks! From Tommy.
As always, I love your videos! But Just as a suggestion tho.....I use tinfoil for awkward holes and shapes! It stays where you want it and easy to remove! And cheap! 👍
Thanks brotha been watching a lot of your videos and man do u make me miss working at a body shop!! I’ve been getting back into spraying I just recently painted a Fulton visor for an old 1936 dodge so I’m dusting the cob webs and freshening up my skills and you really help a lot with this videos. Why do you back mask the rear door edge but not the front door leading edge? Also how would you tape off around the A-pillar and the windshield for painting the A-pillar?
Hey mate really like the way you explain everything so properly. You really good. Respect your skills you got. Inside the drive door ,you can use the masking paper (with the tape,),so that don’t get over spray and save the tape .thank you
Brian why don’t you need to use sponge tape for the front edge of the front door? Won’t overspray get in the gap with back masking only on the fender edge??

Very good video you guys did pretty much everything my dad thought me! Really enjoyed your video! Just one tip that my dad thought me is to paper around your edges in certain cases if your doing a three stage, red, silver etc any job that's gonna take a good amount of coats to get good coverage just paper around your edges so your paint don't build up on the plastic and possibly flake off on to your body panel and cause you headaches. Good videos much love from kauai hawaii! God bless and let's keep spreading the good word of auto body!
Hello Bryan been watching your videos for about a month so far. Question .. what kind of plastic do you use. Homedepot plastic is smaller an paint drys too quickly and make a mess when painting clear coat
Any tips for taping around the windshield trim around the A-pillar? I struggle with the clear flashing to the tape when taped to a rubber seal thats up against what you're painting.
@@PaintSociety I haven't, but I think that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks! FYI I emailed you a few weeks ago about colors not matching and blending. It came out great.

This is late but all you need is a scuff pad there's two types red and goldish green and you want that one because it's not as aggressive as the red and it won't scratch but the reason is because yours is going silver and silver has flake and it'll lay in the scratches and you'll see every one of them (gold paint is the same way) but for any other color you just use the red ones

when masking the door handle holes with the foam tape. Face the sticky side out so it will stick inside the hole and not fall in or out.

Roof is literally the easiest thing you could ever tape off. It's a rectangle. You should probably just stay away from this trade.
