I have 25 years experience and you make me feel like being back to school you are good.
Yea like if tape is f free
Manuel Solis I put some saliva and it works again every time.
when masking the door handle holes with the foam tape. Face the sticky side out so it will stick inside the hole and not fall in or out.
@@manuelsolis738 fr they waste alot of tape i do other techniques
It's important on many of those plastic sheets that you can't put them on upside down. The up side is designed to hold onto paint and overspray. On many brands the underside can collect paint but it flecks off from air (like your spray gun air) and will put bits into your fresh paint.
Exactly. The plastic I use has a shiny side and a dull side. The dull side needs to go out and will hold onto paint. The shiny side will allow paint to flake off and fall into your paint job.
These are great reminders and updates to what's happening now as apposed to 25 30 years ago. So I'm glad you're making these videos. Thanks.
Hi Brian, one thing I noticed is b4 you backmask the perimeter of the door is to mask the opens of the door handle. To prevent overspray enter the cabin. As a certified journeymen refinished you do an excellent job with your videos.
Scotch tape part number 2097 is the greatest tape for masking off a car. It tears easier when done quickly it flexes beautifully, it sticks much better, when you pull it off it will not break etc etc I ordered it by mistake didn't like the way it tore until I figured out how to do it now I absolutely love it... Just masked off painted and removed on a Land cruiser I just did and now I am in love
Cool Brian. Nice masking job. I’m a house painted and it took a few years to learn to mask effectively and efficiently. Cheers
Denatured alcohol in a pump sprayer, mist the plastic ( booth off ) to de ionize the air and remove the ability to hold a static charge. Your detailer will thank you for it.
Anywhere basecoat is with in 6" of plastic, I recommend paper to keep the basecoat from seeding. Edge where fender meets the door, 2" tape attached to foam so when you close the door you can stuff it in the crack to keep base/clear from inside the door jam. Being nit picky but if you're doing work on a new car lot damage repair ( more common then you might think ) they won't be bitching about the overspray on the rubber.
Great video !! The best painters were once the best preppers. A monkey can hold a pattern.
Guess who the retailer is ? You’re talking to him. We are a very very very small jobs. And we are combo men so those tips help. That plastic really creates static.
As always, I love your videos! But Just as a suggestion tho.....I use tinfoil for awkward holes and shapes! It stays where you want it and easy to remove! And cheap! 👍
Thank you! Next time in Walmart. I’ll grab some and try.
Very very instructive, retired master carpenter trying to learn new trade at 70.
Donald that’s awesome. Never too late!
5:03 - Starts the masking
Hey Brian, just a thought here; instead of using a screwdriver to push the tape into a space (time - 9:23) I'd suggest a plastic putty knife $0.98 or
Thanks John! Good idea so paint doesn’t get scratched
By watching you it improve my work, thank you so much
Brian, thanks for the information just on a subject as simple as taping, now Aug. 2020, I still enjoy learning. Question: the plastic used matters from what I can tell. I have heard other painters claim certain plastics can let chunks fly off which can land in your paint. Is this one of those where you should stay with a name brand? I have seen the name brand brand product used right up to the paint line, but cheaper “Plastic is Plastic” is placed away from direct paint line and taped off to avoid overspray. Example; 1967 C10 truck with white top and later, re-tape to finish other panels.
I apologize for not keeping up, but went in for L2-L3 Lumbar fusion and came out with all fused down to include the “S1” or tail bone and binge watching my favorite professional channels.

since the dah i watch your video i keep watching it because i learned a lot from tips to tricks. good job dude
Is this your own shop Brian? If so you are doing an awesome job you should be proud ☺️
great video another tip is when cutting the plastic off of the backtape start at the bottom and work upwards so the plastic doesnt fall getting in the way.
I washed my panel with soap and water (twice) than wiped it with Lacquer thinner, than sanded with 600, is it to late to wipe with wax and grease remover
it is never to late to use grease remover you can use after when ever you like it will do the job what a shit question
This video is very helpful foe DIY jobs .Thanks
How are you going to blend the panels with the tape on there?
Thanks to you I own my body shop now!
Bryan, nice tech, learning something every day
Awesome!!
Masking correctly is a very important step that can either make or break a job
I totally agree. Thanks for your comment and happy new year
Thank you for the great tips to do masking tape..u are awesome 👍 🙏🎸
This is just watching artists at work!
Hey Brian. Great videos. You should do a video on cleaning spray guns and product to clean and storage.
It’s coming!!
Nice video brother Happy New Year to you and yours
Thanks! And I still owe you that video! Haven’t forgotten
@@PaintSociety sounds good brother
Nice video..👍 Succes for the channel and career in 2020
Thank you!!!
Did a video showing how to do fenders ever get made?
I can't find that foam anywhere. What is the name of it?
Very professionaly ❤️👍
"yeah, we're going back to 3M" :-)
Thanks for another great video Brian, just wondering at what point after you have finished painting the job would you remove the masking tape and plastic.
Once it is dry and only when it’s dry unless you have tape on a molding very close to the the paint
@@PaintSociety thank you for the reply, I've never been sure in the past, tried to get it off too soon thinking it would be better.
Hello Bryan been watching your videos for about a month so far.
Question .. what kind of plastic do you use. Homedepot plastic is smaller an paint drys too quickly and make a mess when painting clear coat
Wish I could give this video more likes!
at fifteen minutes in, why weren't you using the fancy helpful tape caddy?
Hi great video man. Can you tell me the name and where can i buy that foam tape you are using. Thanks
Hey! It’s by 3m but all brands make it. Even the budget line “smart” makes it. Comes in many sizes. I prefer 17mm
Brian are you the owner of this workshop...?
No reply ? Hmmmmmm
When is best to remove the tape form the car ?
Good stufff!!!!!!
Brian, which would you recommend LVLP spray guns as opposed to HVLP spray guns when using a small 40 Gal air supply system?
Summitracing LVLP. They are sprayit 33000 clones. Also eastwood concours LT100 4.5cfm @30psi but its labeled as hvlp. I use it with 20 gal.
QUESTION??---When back masking roof rail ,does weatherstrip has to be removed on door window frame or will it work with weatherstrip on, thanks
Just remove the rubber because what happens is the rubber holds the tape too tight to the roof and ends up creating a line when removed. Remove the molding so you can gentle pull down the tape once you back mask or you can just run foam in between. Hope this helps
I hate masking. Especially awkward areas
You sounded exhausted this whole video 😅
Bruh i always paper around the painting area and lay the plastic under the paper
You don’t have to. It’s an extra step. You can take plastic right to the edge
Is this a commercial?
No
I hate this stage
Que dijo
Personally i think your nuts for not using paper i mean its at least maybe 5 more minutes extra time and it makes way less trash
1st!!!
Would be nice if you took the camera off your face and show him taping and explain more in detail why hes taping certain areas . Instead of just saying hes gonna tape here and hes gonna tape there
Sure thing Michael. I’ll keep that in mind for the next taping video. Thank you for you input.
Hey Brian I’m glad I found this. I’ve been watching your videos for the last 4 jobs I’ve done (I’m not professional; we own a small dealership and I do all of our own work) and my last job - new hood on a Pearl red CRV - was virtually undetectable. Confidence has gone from 0 to 95% in those 4 jobs. The is hood was ruined by stone chips left unchecked. The customer who bought it was very happy (I disclosed the hood replacement of course). I really appreciate your approach. And it helps seeing you work on $40-160,000 cars hahaha. This was great; I’ve been wondering how you mask so neatly.I’ve said it before and I will again: yes you’re an industry benchmark if a painter, but you’re also a gifted teacher. Thanks man
You make it look easy but very doable. I'm almost ready to do my truck. It's just paint.
I am with you the paint is so expensive
I love the way you explained things you helping a lot of preppers and Painteres up there keep up the good job wish you Happy New year to you and your family also your coworkers 🤗🤗
Thanks. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos!
Good morning Bryan, lots of Tricks, tips, and techniques. I always learn something new from the intelligent videos. I would offer one of my techniques. I always warm my tape in an old microwave that I have in the paint mixing room, for about 15 to 20 seconds. It does wonders for tape to bend around difficult shapes. I like to chase the moisture from the tape surfaces with a heat gun, it really helps the tape adhere much better. Just my 2 cents worth. Thanks for the great video, you take care and Happy New Year.
Love the tip. Who would have thought? I’m going to try it out and next time I do a video using tape, I will mention and share your tip. Happy new year Steve and thanks again for being a part of the paint society!
Brian, as usual you give us invaluable insights. Could you share with us the info for the foam tape? Thanks a million times.
Yes back to front it only took me 25 years to figure that out
Great tutorial. I can't get over the time you are spending to show us new bees the proper way to tape. Thank you ever so much!
Yes. You are my audience and it’s my duty to bring you good content to learn.
I really appreciate this video you made man. Starting as a paint prep guy tomorrow and this def gave me good insight! 👍🏻
Same here my man. I just started and this video helped me a lot. Specially the putting foam on the door for overspray not to get inside then tape on the next door to seal it…
magnets on clear coat???????
I'm trying to paint my 1990 f150 but I always mess up the masking. Luckily I found this video. It will be used as reference on my path. Thank you
You should do masking videos for difficult parts as well, like roofs etc.
Love your videos! You explain and show everything so well
Yessss, I can do about everything but I struggle with masking lol
Roof is literally the easiest thing you could ever tape off. It's a rectangle. You should probably just stay away from this trade.
wow i wish this channel was around last year. i painted my del sol and regret alot of things i didnt do right on my first paint job. im going to redo ALL of it with your tips
Hope it helps!!!
Does anyone have links to the yellow 3m paint they used and the masking plastic?
Hi Brian,I'm a big fan of your channel,I have learned alot from watching your videos.
My question is what is your impression of the harbor freight black widow 1.3mm paint gun?
Why do you back mask the rear door edge but not the front door leading edge? Also how would you tape off around the A-pillar and the windshield for painting the A-pillar?
You guys made it easier for me to understand. Thanks a bunch
Great teaching method for all the newies in that field.Keep going ,you are a great man with a big hearth to show and share your magic secret tricks .It is so interesting to be watched all the way you do it dude !!!Be blessed.
I Just wanted to say thanks for all your advice from here out of Australia I just started this weakened to sanding down my Prado 120.
I'm starting next week I'm fresh off the boat and I'm scared I hope your tips help cause boss said I'll start on this make my way up or bye bye 😢😢😢
Thanks, that back taping was smart
Straight to the point. EXCELLENT, and THANK YOU!
If I was your assistant and you told me I was better than you thought I would stop and say I’m only good in bed.
Good one !
Has anyone ever told you that you resemble Brian from Impractical Jokers
I have a question I have a 1999 ram dually and fixing the fender made from polyurea tried the plastic staple s.. didn't stick to polyurea what can I use that will bond to polyurea fenders
Try Indasa red also curve very well :

Something about a man hard at work & good at what he does. 🤪
Anywayssss, thanks for the info! ❤
how does the film stick to the tape ? you never mention double sided tape ??
Paper is so last week, plastic only is the only way to go. 1000000 times faster.
Thanks for the awesome channel, Brian. Really appreciate guys like you willing to share their tips and secrets. Keep up the good work.
Where's da link for the materials ie plastic
14:22 "Long consistent tape selection" xDDD
I can’t find the #shetapesvideo, am I close?
Do you put a six paper in between the doors or just tape
Brian, great tutorial as usual.
That little tool thing looked so annoying to use
Super Thank you)))
They used no paper?
Thank you man, I'm a spray painting apprentice so you're videos are super helpful without being overwhelming.
Very detailed, thanks!!
Thank you, brother, on a beautiful channel. I am Adel from Morocco. I want to know masking 🇲🇦🇩🇪👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hope it helped!!
👍👍👍👍👍nice job 🚘🚘🚘🚘🚘
I over think everything.
Loving your channel Brian. Thank you for such excellent content and instruction. Working on painting my first car and setting up a spray system
Thanks!!
What size sand paper do I start with on my car doors I got the doors from wreckers but there red and my ute will be silver so to cut it back what grade to start with as I’ve never tried to paint a car as I’m a carpenter
Funny A
This is late but all you need is a scuff pad there's two types red and goldish green and you want that one because it's not as aggressive as the red and it won't scratch but the reason is because yours is going silver and silver has flake and it'll lay in the scratches and you'll see every one of them (gold paint is the same way) but for any other color you just use the red ones
Thank you ser
Nice! Good job👍
The ending was on point.. it’s just paint don’t over think it! Well put sir! Happy New Years
It’s my new phrase! I have it on all my shirts I’m selling and stickers! Trying to calm the nerves of many in the booth!
The shop I’m at sprays spies Hecker and we recently got another painter and it seems like I spend a lot of time retraining a painter with 20yrs of habits. So I try to let him not to over think things cause like u say it’s only paint..
Like it.
My friend Pete
Dont over think it. Its just tape and plastic 😂
