    Trent, I got a little experience on welding up header tubes and exhaust systems. Best way to go is to Tig weld it with Hastelloy rod. I kind of fell into this by chance. I was Atlanta Motor Speedway and got a crack at end of the boom-tube on my car. Bad deal, the chip falls off right in front of the rear tire and you could lose a car. All I had was a little Mig Welder and that patch job didn't sit well with me. Bright Idea! there is an airport right next to the track - Aviators are cool, and someone has got to have a Tig Welder over there I can use. This was a Saturday afternoon, and I all I could find was one open door on a Turbine Engine shop. The owner was there in the office and was willing to help a fellow out. They use that rod on Turbine Engines for a reason - and wait until you weld with that stuff on carboned-up exhaust parts. You'll wonder what the hell you have been doing all your life. It is the secret sauce Bro! Stainless or Mild Steel - Samey Same.

    Two items. One always keep footwear in mind if that emergency happens. Too easy for flip flops to come off then your barefoot after your emergency landing. Other is cover the bottom half of Haley's door. Mentioned before it might maker her more comfortable at higher altitudes. It is a mind thing that might help. Great video!

      Hal reminds me of my Dad [God rest his gentle, lovely soul...] he would almost always have grease and dirt on his overalls, and on his hands, but would hug and rough-house with us like that... When my mum would complain - he went out and bought her another washing machine - we had 7 as I grew up! 3 at the same time one time...
      To this day, I have firm, unhesitating handshakes with mechanics, not minding the grease on their hands!

    • @MrGaryGG48
      @MrGaryGG48 4 роки тому

      Ya have ta know that any guy that carries a spare prop strapped to the wing struts and can get a spare engine delivered to a dirt road in the middle of nowhere has to have his stuff together!!! Then he swaps engines along said dirt road and catches up with the group in Oshkosh the next day. THAT is the guy you want flying with your group! Hal seems to be very unassuming, no flash an flurry, just an easy going guy who happens to be extremely competent. I think The Flying Cowboys know how fortunate they are.

    Divining rods... clearly the most universal tool in the toolbox. In spit of the difficulties (broken exhaust :/ seems like a common thing) it's very satisfying to watch you guys flying low and slow. That's how aviation started. All you need are some mail bags :) Glad to see that Hailstorm was able to enjoy the flight back.

    Always impressive videography - loved the thunder / lightning audio and video in the beginning. That was great, along with all the other shots on this one! 😎👍👍
    I see aviation is no different than getting a big group of motorcycles together. Always some breakdowns, especially with the older Harleys. Fuel line leaks, electrical fires, oil leaks, and parts shaking themselves free. 😁 Looks like someone needs to design an exhaust system for those planes modeled after 2-stroke dirt bikes or paramotors. A couple, or a few joints with captured springs to ease the stresses. Even then, they still crack. Common in the paramotor world, too. Light weight steel never lasts, and stainless and titanium are insanely expensive. No easy answers there.

That year we flew from Bridgeport CT to somewhere in Ontario Canada to Rockford to OSH to Custer SD to Denver to Rockford then back to Canada to pick my friends son then Bridgeport to clear customs. I agree - it’s not the destination, the adventure is in the trip.
