Prince didn't even get to rehearse with the rest of the musicians on stage. When he showed up for a rehearsal, the guy who did the first solo kept doing all the solos in the song while Prince watched and strummed along. The producer got pissed and told Petty to talk to him so that Prince could rehearse his solo as well. Prince told the producer "don't worry about it" and said he'd do the solo at the end, and left. So nobody knew what he was gonna do when his solo starts. That's one reason Petty kept giving Prince the sign to keep going, he said you could tell "something special" was happening on stage.
I think a lot of people miss that subtlety in the performance. To think about Prince, used to being the bandleader and doing whatever he wants, checking with Petty to find out just how much space he could take. And Petty, being able to read the band’s performance with someone they hadn’t rehearsed with, knowing how much space to give to make it special without being overdone. 👏
There's even more to the story. A week or so before this show Rolling Stone magazine ran a piece saying that Prince was overrated as a guitar player. No one on stage knew that prince was going to go off the way he did except Harrisons son. This solo was a big FU to Rolling Stone Mag.
Prince was proving point with this performance. Rolling Stone Magazine had put out a list of the greatest guitarists of all time and he wasn't on it and he felt disrespected.
Fair enough feeling disrespected, that's fecking disrespectful. Still, Rolling Stone... What a douchebag magazine anyway, they also used to sh!t all over Queen.
I was pissed 😡 when rolling stones Left Prince off the list. Then they tried to have a make over and make #33. Prince knew they were there. Thats what that strut was about after he left the stage.
"Everyone's just playing, no one's being a hotshot." lol. Prince was the only guy who could indulge in that level of showboating and everyone loves him because he's just that damn good.
Lol the guy that played the other guitar solo is a legend as well. He played his note for note the way Clapton played it in the original, he could of shredded it up like prince did. They gave prince the last spot so he could give rolling stones magazine the middle finger and it was epic! But let's not disrespect the other legends on the stage.

This is a “once in a lifetime” performance! We’re blessed to have it recorded! I liken Prince to a modern version of Mozart. The similarities are many. What isn’t mentioned is that this took place at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where earlier in the night, Prince had been inducted! An absolute prodigy, Prince was a virtuoso guitarist who could’ve played lead for almost any band in the world. Also noteworthy, is the fact that Tom Petty and George Harrison were the best of friends. As well as Jeff Lynn was another member of their close knit circle. They’re families were intertwined, which leads to another point. The young man playing acoustic guitar during this performance, isn’t just another artist. He’s actually Dhanni Harrison, son of the great George Harrison! So this truly was a very special performance! Sadly, not long after, we lost both Prince and Tom Petty. Gods Speed. RIP
From THE Beatles White album 1968. George Harrisons induction to hall of Fame! Billy Preston on THE piano, Jeff Lynnes and Tom Pettys voices are great! Marc Mann of Jeff Lynnes band död great on THE earlier guitar solos!(Georges Friend Eric Clapton made then on THE album). Steve Winwood on THE fucking Hammond. I play piano and keyboards can't master THE Hammond organ. Then Prince steals THE show!
George Harrison’s son was playing on stage and obviously loved it. Sometimes a musician just cuts loose, and when Prince did his solo at the end it was amazing!
Not a big fan of Prince. However, his talent is astounding with this performance. Absolutely brilliant. As for the rest of the band…. Epic. What a thrill it must have been to have been there live
The other singer is Jeff Lynne of ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) & both Tom, Jeff & George along with Bob Dylan & Roy Orbison were all in The Traveling Wilburys.
Every artist on the track is amazing, my personal favorite part is how much fun Harrison's son is having up there playing with legends. That must've been amazing!
When you said "a whole bunch of superstars, all playing their position. No one's trying to be a hotshot over someone, they're all just humbly up there jammin'.......""paying tribute" My first thought was "oh, no, see Prince has been quietly strumming over in the shadows and that won't last long". Prince was a genius, multi instrumentalist and self taught.
