I procrastinated for about year, but I finally made this yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised! I had no clue what black bean paste would taste like, and while making it I smelled the jar and the smell made me nervous. But it didn't taste like how it smelled at all! It was very sweet. This was so good, I'm making a 2nd batch today with my leftover ingredients. Thank you Maangchi!

I love Jajangmyeon, and Koreans say Jajngmyeon is one of food you don't eat for your first date, it splash everywhere makes your date get bad impression of you, but I didn't care. I had it on my first date and I am married the one.:-)

Dear vegan and vegetarian friends, extra firm tofu or tempeh or seitan that has been marinated as you like works well as a substitute for the pork! This recipe is so delicious no matter how you eat it though, keep up the amazing work Maangchi!!!!

Booksarelove Booksarelife You really don't need to have any meat or meat substitutes at all. Just the veggies can have the same flavor of jjajang sauce. The meat is more for texture rather than a strong influencing flavor.

I sometimes use Portabella mushroom as a veggie substitute for it's meaty flavor.

I have been a fan of Korean culture for almost 2 years and ever sense been trying little bit of everything, and of course loving it in the end. One thing I have been waning to try is black bean noodles(seen to much of it in Kdramas lol). So i have gone to grocery store and bought black bean paste almost year ago, of course i opened it it tried it the way it was( it was kind of gross lol). So then I kind of got discouraged about it and put it a side. Until i came across this recipe. It looked very easy, ingredients wasn't that hard to find. In the end i cooked it few days ago. And i am amazed how great this dish is. Her recipe is amazing. Extra veggies and meat gives it even more flavors. It took no time to make it. Love it! Thank you.

It's been too long since I've had this dish so I made it tonight. I made some substitutions to use what I had in the house but I'm very happy with the outcome. I used sweet potato, omitted the daikon radish (I don't use it enough to justify buying a large piece), a whole zucchini, and I boned/skinned some chicken thighs instead of the pork. I also used jarred black bean sauce but supplemented it with some soy paste. It's not what I had in Korea- and I didn't expect it to taste the same-, but it still turned out very tasty. I love your site and your books. Maybe one day when I am visiting Flushing, we'll run into each other.

It's worth it to make ja jang myun at home instead of going out to a restaurant because in many places they skim on the vegetable and use inferior cuts of pork which doesn't have as much fat.
At home, you can make ja jang muyn with chunky pieces of pork belly and vegetable, which makes a very hearty and substantial dish.

And since i had finally found the black bean paste I followed your instructions on making the sauce and simply replaced the pork with tuna and wow i was blown away! I made delicious tuna jjajangbap. I was in absolute heaven. Now I have enough left over tuna jjajang sauce for a few meals. This is gonna be a good week! :D Thanks for sharing your recipe!
