  • In Taiwan, the stakes are higher than ever as 19 million voters head to the polls on January 13 to choose their new president. China, which claims the island as its own territory, has gone so far as to cast the vote as a choice between war and peace. In this special edition, FRANCE 24's Yuka Royer speaks with Victor Louzon, assistant professor at Paris's Sorbonne University, about one of the most closely-watched elections around the world this year. We also look back at the history of the island. Plus, our correspondents report from the campaign trail.

The problem with the name of "Republic of China" is the word 'China'. And people with DPP ideology can't have that, because anything associated with"China" is considered like it's from across the shore. (i.e. only traitors love them), and so many of them always associate people from across the shore like someone lowly, dirty and shady as if you're born racially inferior. That's why they don't want to consider themselves as Chinese. They'd rather celebrate their Japanese imperial past with welcome hands (whereas people from the mainland consider Japanese imperialism a form of fascism similar to the Nazis). What's sad about Taiwan is a lot of them don't have much awareness of racial discrimination.
Another problem about ROC is that their constitution still consists of the entire China, however their ideology especially the younger Generation is now more Taiwan independent, meaning even though the country is still ROC, it's as if their island is already 'Republic of Taiwan'.

@@rollingdownfalling _"Another problem about ROC is that their constitution still consists of the entire China"_
No. The constitution explicitly only applies to Taiwan and the outlying islands since the democratic reforms in the 90s.
Mainland "representatives" were kicked out of the parliament by the Constitutional Court in '91 and subsequently the constitution was amended.

In retrospect, i think china was well headed in that direction throughout the 90s and early 2000s, but ever since xi took power and became the emperor, hong kong and taiwan took noticed and started to stray away from the idea of joining the mainland. Xi knew this, so this is why he jumped onto hongkong before the 100 year contract was up. Now taiwan is even more scared now. This is reflective with the national polls on how Taiwanese indentifies themselves as chinese or just taiwanese. Now more than ever, the 80% of the youth consider themselves taiwanese and taiwanese only, while about 60% of those over 40 consider the same. That is a steep cruve from what it was in the 90s.
