How Does China See Indian-Ally Sheikh Hasina's Ouster in Bangladesh? | Taiwan Talks EP441

  • As Bangladesh’s provisional leader Muhammad Yunus begins to steer the country out of chaos, what does Beijing make of the ouster of Sheikh Hasina, who ruled the country for 15 years? China praised Hasina for emphasizing “political stability” and “economic development”, while resisting U.S. allegations of human rights abuses under her leadership. Does the case of Bangladesh sound an alarm for autocrats in China and Russia, whose state medias have described her toppling in relation to terms like “color revolution” or even “Arab Spring,” a wave of anti-government, pro-democracy uprisings that overthrew governments across the Middle East and North Africa beginning in 2010?

      I think its interesting, you discussed how china doesn't want to show this news so they don't give their citizens any ideas of revolution. That's exactly what's happening here in the United States. This is why they focus all our attention to our "elections" which are basically a reality TV show at this point. I saw a 2 min clip here about the revolution in Bangladesh, the rest I had to find from India and Taiwan

    This discussion misses the most important point. The Bangladeshi people considered Hasina a 100% proxy of India. The ouster of Hasina necessarily means the ouster of Indian influence from Bangladesh. The people hold India responsible for enabling Hasina to stay in power as a dictator. India now has a very bad image in Bangladesh which they cannot ever repair in many years.

      This anti-India narrative is nothing new in Bangladesh. They solely believe that everything negative happens in Bangladesh due to India. It is pure self-victimization. They want to avail every facility that India gives them and then they backstab them. I just hope India can now focus on domestic issues. Bangladesh has enough "friends" outside to help them.

      He stated, officially, 19000 Indians stay in Bangladesh.But unofficially hundreds of thousands of Indians stay and work in Bangladeshi companies.Because of that India earns $10 billion dollar as remittance.
      About 1 thousands of Bangladeshi's were killed last month alone because of interference of India government by installing Hasina as dictator in Bangladesh.
      Hasina has enabled laundering of $97 billion
      dollars from Bangladesh causing huge unemployment.
      So, please ask Modi to compensate Bangladesh and solve that migration problem.Look, there is a big flood is going on in Bangladesh because of the water coming down to Bangladesh from India as per UN report and India even did not issue condolence to Bangladesh yet.

    Hasina’s relationship with India was not bilateral-political but personal. With India's support she began her tyrannical regime, blindsided the West by portraying the Islami political party and the common Bangladeshi students of Islamic Institutions as 'Islamic Extremist' which is far away from the truth. Hasina’s goons were responsible for staging many incidents wearing the mask of Islam. Prof Chen is right about that, JEI is just another political party and they try to utilise the people's religious ideology in their favour to win seats in the Parliament. Not to forget Bangladesh is a 90% Muslim country and most of the people have little knowledge about Islamic Laws, so easy to be manipulated

      Between the last week of July and the first week of August 2024, nearly 1,000 people were killed under the direct orders of Hasina. This is not an isolated incident; mass killings also occurred during her regime in 2008 and 2013. In each instance, she somehow managed to escape accountability, but this time is different. Additionally, Hasina has siphoned off a staggering amount of money from various development projects and sent it to her corrupt and ineffectual son, Sajib, who currently resides in the USA.

    I am a bangladeshi watching this show. I mostly agree with both of the guests. However, professor Chen's view of how China try to sell its propaganda to its audiences is powerful. In contrast to Taiwan's dispute with China, Bangladesh has really major issues with India. Ousted fascist dictator Hasina is direct clown of India and through Hasina India tries to crub the interest of the people of Bangladesh, by nurturing Hasina to became dictator. There is evidence of how India helped dictator Hasina to rig last three elections. As Taiwan's focus on China to maintain its sovereignty, the show barely look at the whole picture. As like China, India doesn't behave well with neighbouring small states.

    • @arunsar7893
      @arunsar7893 16 днів тому +14

      The "behavior" of countries with each other is based on the power differential between them and commonality of national interest. When people from smaller countries complain of India not behaving well with neighboring countries they forget this geopolitical fact and instead seek equality in relationship which is never a possibility. Everyone learns this fact. Either the easy way or the hard way.

Such as trying to create instability by sharing fake news, laughing at the deaths of flood affected people, anti Muslim ( Bangladesh is Muslim majority ) rhetorics, pro Israeli movements and etcetera. I can't actually say them all here right now because the list is pretty big but you can say the Hasina government played a big role in fueling the hate, also the Modi government took pretty selfish decisions causing us harm and then there's the beef between Indians and Bengalis on the internet. All and all it has worsened the image of Indians in the minds of Bengali people. I do not want any hostility between neighbours actually, it would be nice if Indians tried to see from our perspective. But the Indian media does not let them do that and they create a very wrong message.

    As citizens of Bangladesh, we have observed China's overt support for the Hasina administration, despite numerous allegations of violation of laws, human rights abuses, enforced disappearances, and electoral manipulation, genocide, killing of innocent protesters against all these irregularities where China was silent. It is becoming increasingly clear that during the Hasina regime neither China nor India genuinely prioritizes the well-being of the Bangladeshi people. We strongly believe that our nation should not be exploited for any external power's vested interests.
    We urge all international partners to build relationships based on mutual respect and common interests with the people of Bangladesh. The younger generation in our country has a strong inclination towards democracy and is critical of undemocratic practices. Do you even understand that it is not possible to work with people of the country that keeps electing dictators? Khaleda and Hasina are both dictators. Last time AL won and killed everybody else. This time after Hasina left you have now eliminated AL leaders. Now they will pay back in the same coin some day. Also Nobel peace prize is not really a merit based Nobel prize. That is a prize for donating millions to Clintons and Obama's. He sucked the blood of common illiterate bangladeshi poor people by lending money at 30+%. Did not pay taxes worth 1200 Crores and fled to the US. This is how he earned the money he donated to Clinton and Obama. As a result got Nobel Peace prize but not the Nobel prize for economics like Amartya and Abhijit. Now you have put him on top without any election. How are you following democracy? It is mobocracy. You guys don't even understand what democracy is. Atleast Hasina / Khaleda had won elections howevermuch you guys don't like those elections. Even the election which brought Biden as the President was not trusted by about 40% US voters. But to install someone without election or without a commitment to election in a short timebound manner is basically signs of dictatorship. This just shows that the people don't understand what democracy is. They just brought on themselves another dictator. This time without election. What % of voters are the students? Why should that minority decide course of the nation? This is CIA playing with you guys man.

    Nice discussion from China perspective, however, it seems very evident that both these gentlemen are not aware of the finer things that are happening in Bangladesh (and also the region)... Thanks to its flawed neighbour policies, India is being shown the door by Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and recently Maldives. Bangladesh was the last stronghold where they had a submissive govt (extremely authoritarian on its own people) who they nakedly helped to cling on to power illegitimately for over 15 years. However, as that govt. Has fallen suddenly, India is in now in a state of shock and are terrified.
    In my opinion, it is unlikely that USA will join hands with India at least in near future to keep Bangladesh on its side. Rather USA will take the matter in their own hands alienating India, as India's capability to deal its neighbours is clearly questionable. Also the fact that Dr. Younus having a great relationship with USA will facilitate that process.
    So India is facing a pretty much deep crisis in maintaining control over Bangladesh market (politically and economically), at least in the short run, especially until it stops providing shelter to the ousted ex-PM Sheikh Hasina in Indian soil and actively keeping support on destabilizing Bangladesh to make things difficult for the new govt.

      2. China wants to isolate India by allying with all of India's neighbors while India doing a bad job of forming good relationships with their people and gov.
      Indians are also to blame for showing too much hate towards it's neighborhood people not just the gov.

    Bangladesh became a battlefield for the three major players. Ultimately someone will win and someone will lose but BD will lose and suffer for a long time. The deer is dear to the lion, tiger, and fox. The fact is BD is a better food for everyone but it may cause indigestion if any party eats too much of it. So, be careful how much you eat. The former PM ate too much which caused indigestion. So, it will be for everyone. Please love the people of this land then we will serve you.

Shek Hasina has never been a liar, She has tried to balance economies and politics. but she has few mistakes she has given more opportunities to the Islamic group. it's her biggest mistake and a few of her business entrepreneurs take lots of benefits from her government time. Seikh Hasina pulled the impoverished BD out of poverty and transferred it to mid income economy. The problem is most humans have short memory and are illiterate/ungrateful. So any good work done by someone gets immediately washed out if one mistake done by the person/leader. Here the mistake was economy. Since Seikh Hasina's equation with US soured very much , US did not support the garment manufacturing industries any more and similarly other economic issues. And if US doesn't, west will also not. As you hear in the show clearly Prof Chen mentiond , China's interets in BD is its own economy. So it will not care about BD's overall wellbeing/economy.

      Secular and progress under Islamic principles as BD people don't interfere with minorities religion and festivals and made them national holidays and public schools teach minorities religion to minorities.
      It's a different version of secularism. More like freedom of religion than religion from state.
      Progressivism is still limited by conservative traditions of all religions particularly Islam.
      Women have right of property, education and work which is not unrestricted. Muslims have their own restrictions and hindhus their own. Males also have restrictions like they can't do fornication or dating culture progressive rights.
      It's different from western and much closer to Malaysia in terms of secularism and progressivism.

    These professors took a very narrow view of how the island could be used, and immediately dismissed the US-influence angle. You don't need a large island to build a military base. People usually think of the movie-like bases, but there are several really small bases on islands all over world. The way I see it, the US would have used this island as a launching pad for quick and frequent arms supplies to certain select groups in Myanmar.

    St. Martin Island is only 5km long, and 1.5km wide on the widest part, the narrowest section is only 100m wide which is in the middle of the island. An airbase? Lol, you can't even build a functional runway there. Also it's not an "island" per se, it's a coral atoll. Around 3 miles off the surrounding area is extremely shallow, too shallow even for mid-size ships to navigate. A naval base might be possible but they need to do land reclamation like how China is doing in the South China sea. But still it's going to be expensive and will just turn into a money pit without achieving any tangible military goal. Because it's located in a very cyclone prone area in the Bay of Bengal and many parts of the island get flooded twice every year. Only 13km away from Bangladesh and 8km away from Myanmar, therefore quite vulnerable in terms of land based attacks. If US really wants to build an air (or naval?) base in Bangladesh, a much better option would be somewhere near the coast of Dakshinpara area in Teknaf. But St. Martin? Doesn't make sense.

  • @premchandrasingh
    @premchandrasingh 14 днів тому +2

    - Disagree with Professor Liu's (Casual dress) view that St. Martin is scape goat for Hashina. It is not, Hashina also made another very related statement around 1-2 month before her ousting - that US is conspiring to create a Christian country in South east Asia.
    - China interest in Bangladesh has multiple reason. Trade could be primary but military angle could not be ignored.
    - Agree with Professor Chen (Formal dress), having China influence in Bangladesh could develop better security of China's energy supply through 2-3 narrow straits.
    - Another Major reason is to have more security to the "Kyaukphyu Port" in Myanmar that will eventually make land road linkup to China.
