Traveling through China isn’t something we ever thought we would do. It’s a controversial country to many people, especially Americans. And it’s not an easy country to get into (the visa process is long).
Because we are building a boat with HH Catamarans, and their main factory is here…we were able to get business visas. And we have been ALL business with our trips (turns out managing a new boat build is a full-time job).
Thankfully, our boat is on the final stretch and sea trials begin soon. Which means we will be ready to sail out of here before the end of the month!
But we are in China! A country we never thought we would have the opportunity to see, much less experience. There’s no way we could let ourselves sail out of here without exploring at least a little bit of the country first. So, we decided to take a one-week hiatus from the factory and do exactly that.
China is a huge country with some of the most incredible landscapes we’ve never seen. Luckily, China has the biggest highspeed railway network in the world. So, we decided to pick a direction and go as far as we could. A 2100km journey from Xiamen to the start of the Tibet Mountains in the Yunnan Province.
And let me tell you, China isn’t at all what we expected.

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of modern-day documentarians, perpetual travelers, and seekers of tall tales.

We've lived off the grid for over 10 years now in everything from a Van to RV to a Sailboat. And over time we have learned a lot about renewable energy, creating safe drinking water, and managing our waste.

I wish train travel was better and more accessible in the US. It's a shame really. You don't know what you are missing till you travel outside the US.
I been living in Shenzhen for the past 7 years and traveling by train is better then flying within China, the overnight sleeper trains are fun but slow, you do meet a lot of intresting people though. Just don't travel during Chinese new year that's a whole experience in it's self. Hope you 2 enjoy tour trip

Absolutely would take the train for the experience! But like Jason said, I think the lustre would ware off… maybe fly back. lol
I love trains, more civilised and easier to stretch your legs and look around. Plus if you really want you can get off, even if it's not your stop 😊 and it's more environmentally friendly.
You are absolutely correct in saying western politics has a different view on what China really is, I'm a Kiwi living in China and have been here for a decade, the country is beautiful the people are lovely and welcoming, what more do you need, oh maybe some more tea, it's a multi billion industry in China and they are so proud of it 🙏🙏🙏

As a second generation Chinese American, I can say that Chinese people are very proud of their culture and heritage. They get so excited when foreigners try to speak their language, even if it’s a simple hello or thank you. I am glad you guys are enjoying your time in China.

The reason they don't want you to wear your crocs on the escalator is that the soft squishy material of the shoe can jam in between the moving steps more easily than a hard soled shoe.
Same warning in Singapore. Happened here many times too, where the soft shoe gets sucked in at the side of the escalator steps resulting in small foot/toes getting mangled! Usually such incidents involve young kids!!
Every weird regulation that seems unreasonable comes from tragical accidents.

I used to live in Beijing, this video brought back so many happy memories. As a foreigner, I was always treated so well by the local people.
I have been to China 4 times and have never had any issues. The people are friendly and the food is great.

Actually,you can take bullet trains to 80% of the cities in China.The ticket is very affordable.Take the line between Kunming and Chendu as an examle,it's about 700 kilometers but it only cost 70 us dollars. The speed may vary according to the terrain.If it's smooth and only a few stops in between,it can travel at 280km/h or so.The food is also very cheap, for a very descent meal in the restaurant in most cities ,you only need to pay 12 us dollars ，a big 、clean room in the downtown with all the facilities（2 beds）only costs you 40 us dollars

The man sitting next to Jason on the train while Jason is explaining how they decided where to go, was so interested and had the cutest smile on his face. That all was so cool! I sat here with a huge smile on my face completely entranced. I have kind of wanted to go there for a long time, but now seeing how the people are so sweet, it makes me want to go more.
I was hoping Jason would talk with him on camera.
It was just nice to observe this, not everything needs to be audible to enjoy.

In fact, ordinary people in China use Western-style toilets at home, but we prefer squatting toilets in public places to avoid indirect contact with other people's skin, which is considered dirty and may contain viruses.
Chinese people usually have two toilets in our homes, one public squatting toilet and one toilet for sitting down

The section in the tea shop kinda broke my heart. It's so easy to just see a people group as nothing more than a sum of their government and the political divisions. Such a beautiful culture and people. Seeing the joy that she got in sharing a part of her world with you really drives it home just how pointless all of the divisions and wedges we drive between ourselves.

We traveled to China to finalize an adoption years ago and traveled around Beijing and then Guanzhou. The people were lovely, and we deeply enjoyed our time there. Our biological son was seven with long blond hair and blue eyes and everyone wanted a picture with him. At first, he was nervous, but we suggested he should think of himself as a rock star whose adoring fans wanted a selfie with him. That won him over and we laughed every time someone would try to sneak a picture of their child with ours. Our Chinese daughter is a joy!

I loved this video. I lived in China for 8 years and watching you guys brought back so many memories. I can shed some light on the things that amaze you in the video. For one the hot water, Chinese people prefer hot water as a normal drink compered to cold. As it helps you with the digestaton, what I heared form them is that it helps for a oil not to stick to your gut. Also for taking picture, I know it sounds weird but some of the people never seen foreigners there or very few and they like to take pictures with foreigners because its new. I really loved China and it has great things that you should try if you are in a bigger city like taobao, and didi, or stuff like that. Hope you are having a great time. :D
Excellent episode! I have always thought that we, as Americans, have been lied to about China. My own experiences are very similar to yours. I hope to go again as we live in the Philippines part of some years. I was originally swayed in my impression of China by the entertainer "Yanni." Yanni was the first western entertainer to perform a concert in the forbidden city inside Bejing in 1997. He produced a documentary that was part of his video called "Tribute." He, along with his entire orchestra, were in the country for about six weeks, and he was blown away in the good way as most westerners are. Since then, I have found that country to be a place I always look forward to visiting more. By the way, that high-speed railway system was built from nothing to the largest in world in 8-11 years, depending on who you ask. Amazing!

What myths? It's all there. Except that you will not see everything on a short trip like this. It is nice to see but they are skimming the touristy topping. Try also going a bit deeper.
We visited China 4 times between 2002 and 2015, the last one going from Shanghai to Beijing but with a cruise on the Yangtze and visiting Xi'an and many other places. We've experienced similar behavior and I cannot wait to go back....

My daughter went to Beijing 13 years ago to teach English. She was 21 at the time. 1 year later I went to visit her for 3 weeks. She could only get 1 week off work, so we decided to travel to Xian (terracotta warriors etc). I like train travel, so we decided to go to Xian on the overnight train, and return to Beijing 5 days later on the high speed train. Really enjoyed the actual travel AND really liked Xian. Because my daughter had already lived in China for a year by the time I went to visit her, she already knew most of the tricks and traps of living there, it made things a lot easier for me.

There are currently 144 hours of transit visa free entry! As long as you have a ticket to another country, you can enter China without a visa for 144 hours. Although it is not that long, you can first take a look at whether China has been collapsing or is about to collapse as described in Western media narratives. There are beautiful scenery and lovely people here. Come on!

I went to Shanghai on business back in 2020 just before the Covid pandemic hit. I have told everyone the same thing you experienced - even in a large city like Shanghai everyone was so nice. Everyone was proud to show off their country and make you feel welcome. I never would have expected that considering all the negativity in the news. It was an unexpected delight to relive that with you. I have watched your channel since right before you transitioned from RV to Sailboat. I look forward to your videos every weekend. You guys have a second career as a touring channel. You guys do great work.

I never write comments but this video has really enlightened me and I want you to know what a great job you’re doing. What an amazing experience, and a beautiful country! I think if many Americans could do what you did; travel to the same places, we would all feel a lot different about China as an adversary. Jason, you did a great job of documenting the stone forest and its tortuous trails.
My mother went to China 22 years ago (I remember because it was just before 9/11; she was trapped there for 10 days before a return flight could be arranged.) She went with a planned group and had a Chinese "guide" (minder) with her the whole time. She raved about how welcoming and polite everyone was, just like you.

The pu'erh tea ceremony is extremely well done by the tea shop owner. And yes, pu'erh is totally a rabbit hole, that myself and one of my co-workers went down many years ago. Resulting in sets of wooden tea trays, tea cups, tea pots, gaiwans, and more. Watching the tea shop segment really brought back some great memories of that time. I'm so glad you guys got to experience that.
Did you feel "tea drunk" after so many infusions of sheng pu'erh? It's a unique feeling that's close enough to a caffeine "high" but somewhat different, more of a full body sensation. Some of the younger teas will bring about a more unpleasant feeling, until they've gotten 15-20 years of age or more. the price of this tea shocked me
I've personally bought aged cakes that were over $USD 100 and that's not even close to "expensive" for this particular type of tea. Is it worth it? I guess if you really like it. Realize that a full cake of aged pu'erh will last a single person a very long time even if they drink it regularly. The traditional size is 357g which is a lot of tea!
Normally what I do is to buy some "younger" tea cakes which would cost much less, then store them in a cool and dry place. Then probably after 5 years or even more, I will dig them out. 😉

Ten years ago I accompanied my father on one of those state sponsored China bus trips. It was amazing. I had no idea China could be so beautiful.
I was fortunately enough to tour China just before COVID hit so 2019. The place was magical and I enjoyed every minute of it. From the tea plantations to being able to climb a pretty steep portion of the Great Wall I would go back in a heart beat. Venturing into off the beaten path places was even more interesting as the Chinese had a fascination with Western tourists. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Taking the train is the only way to go and the high, high speed trains are impressive. Glad you enjoyed yourselves.
Fortunately, China is reopening now. The citizens of 12 countries can go to China visa-free and stay up to 15 days.
@@yudonghui Trains are not the only way to travel. You can also take long-distance buses. But if you have limited time and want a good travel experience, I recommend you take the train. Long-distance buses can only go 120km/h on the highway, so Relatively speaking it’s really slow! For inter-provincial travel, you can also take a plane~
No matter how you may choose to travel, you two will always be a first class couple in my book!

As a U.S. southerner who enjoys Southern Sweat Tea I have learned the Chinese Tea tradition and meanings. It has been a fascinating journey to learn. I have purchased original Chinese Tea pots and cups. I make and serve tea for my spouse with reverence rather than a rush. Drinking roots and herbs for healing, or aged tea leaves for enjoyment using the Chinese method is calming, centering, and most of all, remindful. It makes causes me to remember to be grateful for the simplest things, for the one sharing the tea, for the time I have. Glad you learned about the Chinese tea method. I could watch your videos like this one for hours!

I’ve seen other videos of China and it’s amazing how much cleaner it is than cities in the USA. I’ve always wanted to go there and travel around to see the country and meet the people. I can’t speak a lick of Mandarin but it still seems like an amazing place to visit. Even the older train y’all said you were on looks new on the video. There’s no graffiti or worn out looking stuff. I was there with my family(chinese wife and 3 young kids) for 6 weeks(10 inner flights, 1 train and one cruise) and experienced so many adventures. I can totally feel what you experienced. I hope you took the time to see the traditional Lishui Jinsha Grand Performance show.
Nothing like trying to travel during a Chinese National Holiday. I absolutely loved my visit to that section of China. Nothing else compares.
I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic. During that period, it was crowded with people and traffic congestion. Even we Chinese do not recommend traveling during that time.
Love this, and so timely too - we are in China for 3 weeks (about half-way through) and travelled from Changsha to Pingxiang by fast train. Totally agree with your observations.
Flying is transportation. Train is transportation AND an experience. 2 for 1. I wrote that at the beginning of the train trip. I had to come back to say a huge thank you for sharing this experience. It has been on my mind that Asia should be my next trip. Now, thanks to this video, I will be relentless till I get there. So far, your trip is amazing and we are only a couple days in!

Traveling by train throughout China is the most seamless way to travel in the world and it's not even close. Show up 20 minutes before train departs and you're good. My buddy and I usually each book one 1st class and one 2nd class because more likely than not, there's nobody else (maybe a few people) going to be in the 1st class carriage so we can both chill in 1st and split the difference.

Usually that works. But sometimes the staffs may ask you to show your ticket if they figure out you don't belong to the 1st class.

I spent a week in Beijing in 2011. My favorite thing was reading the English mistranslations of the Chinese signs. Also, the Beijing Hilton was one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. For $129/night it was awesome. Total luxury, amazing view, breakfast included.

As Nikki indicated, if you strip it all away, we are just people, trying to live, love and enjoy life. I appreciate how well ordered Chinese society is and clean. I am impressed that there is virtually no theft. Here in the States I have to go armed just to go to a restaurant for dinner.

So heart warming that you guys didn’t let the urgency of catching your train rush you away from such an incredibly immersive cultural experience. It reminded me of a similar experience I had with my mom traveling in Japan. We were invited to join our Ryokan hosts for breakfast and ended up departing late but had so much fun connecting with the often unseen family joy when traveling. They ended up calling an ex racing now taxi driver, who sped incredibly fast down narrow back roads with inches of clearance between us and disaster, but got us to the station so early that we ended up accidentally rushing onto the earlier super-fast Shinkansen train instead of our 7 min later regular train. We had quite the laugh after telling the story to the train crew, and they let us ride all the way to Tokyo after a few jokes about the police 😅 Can’t wait for the next episode!

My life companion and I were traveling for 5 weeks in China and we covered similar ground in Yunnan. The high speed trains were amazing. The engineers seemed to have worked out that it's cheaper to tunnel through the mountains and bridge the valleys than to go over and around the mountains. We were traveling through mountains on much of the journey.
The Chinese people were very welcoming and generous. We felt very safe on our travels and we will return.

I’m from the South and grew up drinking ice tea with every meal. Now, at 56, I don’t drink tea at all. Just don’t really have a taste for it anymore. But the visit to the tea lady in this episode makes me want to go to China just to go see that shop and that lady to let her show me everything she has and all she knows!! That was so cool!!
