The American Express Platinum card every year is getting harder to justify. So I sat down with my buddy @AnthonyVenture to discuss why I may be canceling my American Express Charles Schwab Platinum and looking to replace it with the American Express Delta Reserve.

It’s funny how Amex is great until the annual fees hit and folks realize they are not the target customer for their cards…
Ha! You're not wrong. However, at the time the card worked well for me, I moved, and some of the credits are harder to use and they changed the entertainment credit. Plus my home airport doesn't have any Amex lounges, unfortunately, and a bunch of direct flights. So for me, it didn't make sense to keep any longer.

FYI - the enhanced Companion Certificate will work for Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico & the Caribbean , but I don't think you can use it on flights to S. America. Maybe Central America, but not S.

Oh for sure, if the credits are easy to use for you; I would argue it's the best credit card in the market. When I first applied for the Platinum I was living in the city, but after moving out to the suburbs the credits are harder to use for me to use naturally so it doesn't make sense to keep it anymore.
Haha yes! Sebby actually came out to Luke's Point and Miles' meet up in Vegas in 2023. Sebby is a cool guy but he is tallllll. At least 6 ft 2in maybe; I did not expect that haha.
Thanks for this documentary Calby! It swayed me away from the AMEX Platinum. I was on the fence about it.
I have both, the Amex Delta Reserve Business and the Amex Delta Reserve consumer cards. These two cards are now in my top 5 best premium travel cards setup in my wallet. I just redeemed one of the companion certificate and saved $1,000. For a trip to SXM. And also used the $250 Stay credit for Royal Islander Resort. Cheers 🥂
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Calby. Sorry to hear your experience has been bad man. I love Delta and I have the Delta Plat but I do like having the lounge diversity that the Amex Plat gives as I can see times where I may not be flying Delta. I enjoy your thought process brother!! Thank you man.

Pretty much what Calby said.... is why I didn't get the Amex Platinum card. The $695 is too high of an annual fee for what they're offering. Also the whole "benefits" broken down monthly thing is just ass. Just make it a lump sum, and done.
Nah the consumer would actually benefit haha. Seriously though I've heard so many times (even other UA-camrs) miss out on using the credits by accident. Personally, when I was living in the big city I didn't think too much about the credits because they were easy to use but after moving out of the city I have to constantly remind myself to use it; plus Uber Eats up-charges a lot out here (Like $5 to $10s).

Soooo Loved this Video !! I recently got the DeLta Reserve for the exact same reasons presented by Calby. The Amex Platinum is just not feasible for me to Justify as EASiLY as it can be with the DeLta Reserve. i am elated with my new Fab looking card and DeLta PERKS !!!

If you travel or plan to travel and travel often there is no travel card on the market that competes with the Amex Platinum. After all it's a travel credit card and everything else spend is 1x, clearly folks that don't travel have no business getting a $695 1x rewards credit card. The travel value that the Amex Platinum holds is huge, the status and lounge access, travel and product insurance and warranties easily outweigh the AF. Know what you're applying for there is no sense complaining about a credit card that doesn't fit your intended spend.

I got it for the 150K, Audible and Uber. Once they cut Audible, it made me think again. Not worth another increase.
Right! I had the same thing happen to me with Sirius XM then after one or two credits don't make sense anymore the whole card kind of breaks apart and alternatives may be better.

The reason why I didn't get the platinum, credits are every month. Too annoying to keep track of, I'd prefer a lump sum and just let me know what I still have left. Too many hoops to jump through. Also, I would just end up spending more because the credit isn't enough for the month.
My dumb self is holding amex plat and the skymiles reserve at the same time. I’m just currently getting enough value for it. But if I had to do one… man I really really appreciate the MQD stuff. Like you can basically count on being a silver medallion member off that card alone every year
If the refresh (benefits/credits) of the Gold do not convince me, will be canceling it, right now is not my priority 🤷♂️

Interesting take on having the Delta Reserve replace the Platinum. I still however feel that the Amex Gold is one to cancel over the Platinum right now.
For sure, of course I know the Delta Reserve isn't for everyone but it might make sense in my situation, but that Amex Gold card on the other hand; there are way too many competing products now, like the Bilt card for dining or US Bank Reserve for everything honestly haha. I actually ended up cancelled my Amex Gold a week or so ago. Thanks Matt!

You know what, that’s a good catch! I intended to use different mics but then they failed so I used the audio from my iPhone. I tried to clean it up the best that I can but of course you’re not gonna get amazing audio from a phone’s mic.
I have 4 amex platinums
(annual fee’s waived)
and i can assure u the platinum is not worth $695.
Great card but the fee is ridiculous.
Its literally just a show off luxury card thats pretty easy to get approved for these days.
