    For those still wondering - the issue has been fixed a few months ago. I just googled to see if they've released a firmware fix since this video has come out and apparently MS stopped doing the ycbcr to rgb conversion in a firmware released a few months ago.

      It definitely looks way better now, and on my X, I will only be playing Gears, Halo, and anything that will look beautiful, but most other games will play playing on my S. What's cool i the S bluray player would freeze while forwarding, and the X does not do tat at all.

    HDTVTest ... Thanks for the excellent comparison and breakdown of the differences in capabilities. Do you think the decoding mismatch internally of the Xbox One X can be resolved with another update to the firmware/OS? Or is this a hardware limitation in the way Xbox is engineered?

    Vincent Teoh I got a problem with my Sony X900E and X1X. There is some strange pink banding/posterization happening all sky boxes during all 4K HDR Blu ray discs. I followed all your settings clearly. Does the X1X simply have more sky banding or is it part of the X900e?

      @@peanutbutterjelly1481 I figured what happend its the Xbox total trash so I have the q90r sound bar which has dolby atmos and to turn on dobly atmos sound on the Xbox you have to change the setting in the Xbox to hdmi from auto when u do this it will not allow u to choose 4k resolution but u can turn on the dobly atmos sound however it doesn't work nothing works no sound comes out. Eventually I fixed it by reseting to default settings and boom 4k works again how ever the dobly atmos sound doesn't work. How ever when I use the apps from my TV the dolby atmos sound works Xbox is total trash it's all about pushing there next system garentee you this will be fix for the Xbox series x also a lot of review about the Xbox not being about to read the color code correctly for hdr content and think this is why I see better colors using the apps straight from the TV. I'm using an Xbox for 4k movies. Is there much of a picture quality difference between an actual 4k player over the Xbox. No one's talking about it in reviews I've see it's all about colour and how HDR on Xbox is too bright and washed out but nothing about picture quality.
      Star wars on 4k looks the same as the 2020 blu ray copy from the box from the 4k version. The comparison video's are 4k vs 2011 blu ray but the 2020 hd blu ray picture quality look basically identical in every way including HDR. It's close to impossible to see aactual difference between UHD 4k an HD blu ray 2020 version that is. So I've held back on getting a Panasonic 820 player as I'm just not sure about picture quality difference as I've never heard anyone speaking about it. Just colour. Even this vid was only about colour touched a pinch on HD blu ray but no 4k picture quality differences only stupid colour

    Very informative. Thank you.
    We currently own a Blu-ray player and we're not using it as much anymore because we're streaming movies now. Plus, I don't have a 4K TV. Maybe way down the road.
    I've a matching Panasonic Plasma TV and a Panasonic Blu-ray player. Picture's quite good. However, I'm sure, if I calibrate it using a real good calibration disc, the quality of the picture will definitely be improved.
    Can you recommend a disc I can use to calibrate my Panasonic TV and Blu-ray player?

    Was this update only applied to the Xbox One X and not the S series? I recently purchased a Samsung Q6F and tried watching a 4k version of Black Panther on my Xbox one S. To add to this:
    Based on your findings, would you recmmend keeping the YCC422 option on or off?

      As annoying as it may be that the xbox installs the whole game to the Harddisk, it will prolong the longevity of the drive. For example the Playstation 2 and original Xbox was not recommended to watch movies on, since it wore down the optical drive.

    This issue has not been resolved, the information given about it being updated via firmware is incorrect. I tested personally using the Spears and Munsil HDR benchmark and the color space is still decoded incorrectly for Rec.2020 (HDR). The color space for Rec. 709 (regular HD) is decoded correctly.

    Great review ! I have the X since his launch, so today it's one year later and I'm definitively so happy to buy this console ! I'm happy to see the beauty of videogames on it (I play FM7 today, it's always a flagship of the XB1X for me ! So many details, so many colours, so beautifull it is ... ), 4K is excellent when it's native like games like Warhammer Vermintide 2 (I compare it on Xbox One original and it's so much better on X ! All the details we see ... amazing !) or others and games with dynamics resolution like BF1 or BFV are clearly great ! I have a Sony XE9005 49" (for my bedroom !) and I occasionnaly watch movies but I never watch an ultra 4K Bluray (but I just recently buy Dunkerque and I'm impatient to see the result !) but I really happy to know I have a great device for that ! XB1X today is clearly the best console you can buy. For those who have a 4K TV or want to buy it, clearly the XB1X is the best choice you can make to complete your installation for 4K content. It will be the next gen console but only in 2020 or 2021, so 2 at 3 years to wait, a XB1X stay a great purchase today. You play on console in the best condition and you have a great 4K Player !

    Reality is, if you don’t have two versions right in front of you and someone hasn’t pointed out which is the correct display, you will never know as you won’t have any reference material to compare it to. I watched Star Trek Beyond on my X last night, it was a sharp image and colourful with inky blacks on my Oled E6. Dolby Atmos through my amp sounded incredible. Just set it to allow the amp to decide. Oppo high price is not worth it.
    What I also find is interesting is Steve over at AVForums when he tested it, said the same thing, however the difference is so small you wouldn’t notice. Guess it’s a matter of opinion.

    • @madfinntech

    • @Rambo9700
      @Rambo9700 6 років тому +21

      MadFinnTech but if I brought you into a room, had my OLED with both a Xbox One X along with an Oppo, put a film on, told you it was being played on the Oppo but actually it’s the Xbox One playing it, your telling me you would spot the difference and no longer be able to enjoy it? No, I didn’t think so either 😉
      As Vincent said, you wouldn’t really know unless you have another version right next to it to compare. I’ve seen both side by side and it’s being really nit picking. A dedicated player of course is designed for one thing but it’s not worth the price difference in my opinion if you do have an Xbox already. Naturally if you have no interest in games you get a dedicated player. Xbox One X does give a superb picture, plenty of pop and colour.
      No person on the planet would notice unless they have the equipment to check.

    • @alexispillon1608
      @alexispillon1608 6 років тому +22

      Same here ! I won't shell out another 600 euros just to get 5% more accurate colors in 2% of scenes. Color management is a big hassle anyway since problems can come from : camera used on set, settings during post-production,BR encoding, internal player, hdmi cable, image processing of the tv etc.
      The X does 99% of what a high-end dedicated player does and then it's still the most powerful console ever made to date, all this for a measly 500€.
      Without the same exact TV's side-by-side nobody couldn't tell the difference anyway.

    • @Rambo9700
      @Rambo9700 6 років тому +5

      Alexis Pillon there are plenty of videos running a film using the Xbox and say a Sony to see he difference, I couldn’t, it was too difficult on a moving screen. Might pick up subtle differences if I pause the frame.
      For what Microsoft give, it’s an incredible bit of kit. I do find mine is pretty silent, not heard when playing films or games. My PS4 Pro on the other hand is seriously loud sometime. Kudos to Microsoft, brilliant value.

    • @alexispillon1608
      @alexispillon1608 6 років тому +8

      Yeah I don't buy Blu-Ray's to pause every minute in order to appreciate the color accuracy.. And when you factor in the ever changing viewing conditions (TV settings, time of the day, source player) I'd say it's pretty pointless to search for the ultimate PQ if you also need a gaming console anyway.
      I find it very silent too, trying the Forza 7 demo I got a good laugh by muting the sound and realizing that the One X was dead silent. A very good kit (console, multimedia player, Netflix/Twitch/UA-cam center, 4K player) for a pretty sweet price. Enjoy your console man :)

    I'm getting a Sony 60-inch 4K TV. I already have a 'regular' 1080p Sony blu-ray player. Aside from differences in colour and contrast, will my regular blu-ray discs look as 'sharp' on my regular blu-ray player when played on the 60" 4K TV (assuming they are upscaled, as well), or should I purchase a UHD blu-ray player? If there is very little difference in 'sharpness' (on a 60" 4KTV from my regular blu-ray player), I don't really want to purchase a UHD blu-ray player, nor have any intention of buying 4K discs in the future. I can see doing that if I had a 70", or bigger, television. Thanks!

    I only noticed this on my Samsung today after having it for over a year and using it for UHD blurays with a One S and now X, but mine changes picture settings not just based on the input and special viewing modes like game or HDR+, but also the type of input it is getting.
    I calibrated the picture with the little tool built into the Xbox dashboard, then put in a movie and noticed it looked terrible. But the tv had defaulted to different settings for 24p playback.
    I wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox has some issues, but for me the issue is the tv changing settings on its own.

    Quote from xbox:
    "We have resolved issues with RGB colors when displaying in 4K HDR mode when playing a UHD disk"
    Please see source below for a statment of fix to the 4k disc playback RGB issues. This is update 1804. Use cntrl-f on your browser and type "Display" for the section with the statement.

      Note: I believe the way to verify if this update (1804) has been applied to your console is go to:
      Settings>System>Console info> and read under "OS version". Mine says:
      10.0.17134.4056
      (rs4_release_xbox_dev_1806.180626-1359)
      Thus, I assumed that because it is from the 1806 build it should contain fixes from 1804 build.

    Also I've seen videos advising to let the TV do upscaling but my TV doesn't seem to upscale FVD or standard BLU Ray. When I set the Sony blu ray player to output the original picture for a DVD , the picture is nothing but a blurred mess even with super resolution set to high. When I set the blu player to upscale the picture is much sharper.

    I liked the review. It is good to know that the update really helped the Xbox One X 4K Blu-Ray performance. It sounds like they have a bit more to go to make it perfect, but they still can. I have not played a 4K movie on it yet but I did just buy Furious 7 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 so it won't be long.

    Great video! I'm not sure mine is working correctly, as I'm new to 4K Blu-rays and wasn't particularly wowed by the picture. I switched between a 4K Blu-ray copy of Fast & Furious 8 and a regular 1080p Blu-ray copy and found that the 1080p copy looked...pretty much the same. In fact I felt like it looked slightly better. Obviously it's being upscaled but I would expect the 4K copy to be the clear winner there. The same thing is happening with UHD Netflix, I'm not really seeing any jump from the regular HD content.
    Have a friend who is having the same experience, but I can't find anything online about this particular problem, which has me worried! TV is all set up correctly and the console shows that it's all good for 4K and HDR etc., so it's as if there's a problem with the way the console is playing video, because games are most definitely in 4K and look stunning.
    Hoping it's not just my eyes and that it's something they sort at some point because right now I'm not seeing the benefit of the 4K discs!

      Your "4K" UHD Bluray looked the same as the 1080p Bluray, because it is: realorfake4k.com/my-product/fate-of-the-furious/
      Fact is the list of movies actually mastered in 4K is incredibly small. Hollywood absolutely hates 4K, bigger files, the potential for quadrupling your rendering time on special effects (even though no movie actually has 4K VFX yet... EDIT: Excluding all the Christopher Nolan movies, that man is amazing).

    • @budthecyborg4575
      @budthecyborg4575 6 років тому +1

      It seems like half the people making movies all think 4K is the devil and they are actively trying to sabotage it.
      It's incredibly sad, sickening even, because if we boycott anything that isn't actually mastered in 4K they'll say "4K is a failure" but if we keep buying 2K masters on "4K" Disks you actually aren't getting what you paid for.
      Hopefully consumers can figure this out well enough to mostly just buy movies mastered in 4K, and just get the $5 DVD otherwise.

      Ah, that Fake 4k site is a real eye opener! The closest thing I have to a 'Real' 4k film at home is Logan (which that site has down as 'nearly' 4k), tried that last night and it looked great. I guess I was expecting a more eye-popping difference and picked the wrong film to test it out on (F&F8).
      There was another update for the Blu-ray app though (after the HDR fix) so there's even a chance that has made a difference. I tried Ghost In The Shell (which is another 'fake' one according to that site) and the colours looked fantastic, so I wouldn't be surprised if MS have pushed out more improvements.
