I’ve been using my PS5 as a 4K Blu-ray player and I’ve been impressed so far. A dedicated Blu-ray player might be slightly better but I don’t think it’s worth buying if you already have a ps5. But that’s just my opinion.
@guyincognito6582I don't understand what you said. I didn't understand when you said "Consoles are region locked for Blu Ray/DVD and there's no way to change that"
@guyincognito6582 Sony specifically made the PS5 region-free and has continually instructed game developers not to region-lock game disks. They did the same thing with the PS4.
It's a licensing issue. Dolby charges $3 per device sold iirc. Now, most companies sell several hundred thousand TVs, maybe a few million or so for any given specific popular model, that alone is around $3M, Sony probably pays several millions to license it for its TVs alone. But the PS5? It's expected to sell over a 100M consoles by the end of it's lifetime, probably far more. Sony already is reportedly selling each console at a loss, do you think they'd pay $300M+ for an HDR license when there's already a free and open source alternative? Lol
I remember when my PS2 was my first DVD player and got the Matrix and I still have that copy that it doesn't enhance the green which to me is better then the newer versions.
I think its clear the ps5 is comparable to stand alone player for HDR10. We need a video to determine if Dolby vision alone is worth the cost of stand alone player. Would love to see video on your Sony x800 m2 with DV movie vs the ps5. Show us what we are missing out on! HDR 10+ is just a non factor with the small list of movies supporting it. It's all about DV!
You can't see Dolby Vision on UA-cam because it doesn't support it. But as the guy above me said, DV is a nice extra but it's not worth hundreds of dollars. The average consumer would barely be able to tell the difference
My main complaints with the PS5 as a Bluray player is that it doesn’t support Dolby Vision and that it doesn’t report the change from Game to Movie content to the TV. My LG CX can automatically switch from Game mode to Filmmaker mode, but of course the source has to correctly report the type of content being played.

Nice Video! One note...in regards to the difference in playback sync. it is likely the camera that you are using to record your Blu-ray video and NOT your Blu-ray player and PS5 that is causing the sync differences you notice in playback. This is a common issue in recording audio/video and can be fixed by the use of time code sync. I believe the player has this time code sync built in to read from the disc so it’s unlikely any shifting would occur

Thanks for the comparison. I have both (bought the UB820 about a year ago) but I wouldn't dream of using the PS5 as my main player. I did with my PS3, was my first Blu-ray player. The PS4 didn't have that option, which forced me to buy a separate player. I've preferred a dedicated player since as I noticed they were whisper quiet and packed more features.
The PS4 can play BluRay bruh 💀 unless you're not connected to the internet and don't update the drive to be able to play BluRay. I've played BluRays in my PS4
Do you know if that panny 4K bluray player's HDMI Out audio port can be used with a Adapter that allows for USB 2.0 audio. I'm using a DAC & and a pair of headphones.
Love your comparison videos because they are well-made and informative. Considering how rarely I will likely watch physical UHD, I think the PS5 is good enough for my uses. Dolby Vision is nice but not a dealbreaker and I'll be using something else for the streaming apps anyways. The real struggle will be getting a PS5 anytime soon.
Great video! You got on my recommendations. I’ve subscribed. I will also say that the UB-820 has dedicated Dolby Vision & HDR10+ settings. I’m not sure also about the PS5 but the UB820 has an actual 4K converter for 1080p blu rays built in. Much darker blacks and smoother picture and sound.
Was your UB820 using the HDR Optimizer? It would be interesting to see the differences between the two especially with the Panasonic considering the optimizer is a killer feature mentioned by Vincent Tioh.
Great news. I was on the on the shelf between a dedicated and PS5 digital, or the PS5 disc. I ended up getting the disc version hoping that the blue-ray player would be good enough. Nice to see I'm not missing too much.
Thanks for your comparison. I purchased a Sony - UBP-X800M2 and have it connected to a Sony A90J, but like many others, I am plagued with 4K disc lockups. In fact every single 4K disc I have played locks up after about an hour! Going to a console might be the better option, but still looking, and my next option might be the Panasonic UB-820.
@@redrock425 Thanks, and I am Glad to hear it. I returned the X800M2 and went with the Panasonic DP-UB820, and all my issues are gone plus, I don't have to switch to Dolby Vision manually.
Recognizing it was a lifetime ago, I spent $1k on my first Blu-ray player, after a year it failed, I spent another extreme amount on similar for it only to fail rather quickly as well. The first time of failure I ignored many who bought the PS3 for less than these dedicated players and used it, but finally decided on the 3rd attempt to try it. Well, it is still running today, and I can say at the time, it was much faster to load, and ran seamlessly where my other players were quite slow. So, I would not be afraid to do this as long as the specs of today's units are comparable.
Agreed! That’s what I’m trying to decide if the difference is something to worry about. I bought this to be my 4kbd player... my Apple TV streams movies in Dolby Vision 4K and supports Dolby Atmos... so, just about any movie I purchase on UHD BD comes with the movie that I can stream. But I know, an actual disk will have a better performance all around. But does the Dolby Vision set things apart!? Ugh, I want Sony to pay the fees to allow both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos without having to finagle anything.
@@moogle2crooks I have a PS5 and also bought the UB820 to see if there was any worthwhile difference in AV quality when watching 4K discs. It was next to nothing at all so I returned the UB820 and now happily watch my 4K movies on my PS5. Dolby Vision is completely overrated as the difference just comes down to personal preference in picture quality. It’s not objectively better.
@@RedPanda555 point taken, and I appreciate your input! The hard part is, having spent an arm and leg on a tv that supports DV, it kinda sucks that the console I also spent another half an arm and half a leg on doesn’t support it~ ugh!! Man i was waiting for a comparison like this for ps5 vs dedicated 4k blu ray player and you have provided it. Thank you!👍 But in your valued opinion do you think the extra feature of having dv on the ub 820 is worth getting over the ps5? Is there actually a difference? I have a ps5 and 4k dv tv and struggling to see if i need a dedicated 4k blu ray player like the Panasonic ub 820. Please help. 🙏
I also saw a color shift during your detail still (when Alita was on the floor). Also, unless there has been an update in not aware of, the PS5 doesn't have Atmos support. They are (or were) pushing their 360° audio format, so it obviously technically supports audio objects (supposedly more than Atmos, not that it matters). I've had better overall visual and audio performance (especially audio, wow what a difference sometimes) for *most* films on the Series X, and occasionally even the black levels are superior. Another thing I noticed is the PS5 doesn't handle scenes with heavy, complex motion as well as the Series X. A good example is The Fellowship of the Ring's opening scene. Right after, at the transition to The Shire, I felt that the PS5 was significantly more muted irrespective of movement. Sound overall took a significant hit too. I too took frames and video from this film to compare, sent to friends, and even sent to someone I know who worked on the mastering of the Hobbit and LOTR UHD sets. Their response: I know. However, one frustrating thing about the Series X has been that it'll drop occasional frames, which is unacceptable and jarring. I haven't seen this behavior on the PS5. What I have noticed is the PS5's drive is a lot louder and seeks more erratically. The Series X also has a bug with some setups where it won't properly switch to DTS when a movie doesn't support Atmos. It'll give me a can't decode error and it'll force me to manually choose DTS and restart the Blu-Ray. I haven't seen it happen in a few movies so maybe they fixed it (they haven't fixed the 120Hz no signal bug affecting some games though) but it was incredibly annoying. Anyway, if it wasn't clear, I own both consoles along with ~140 UHD BRs and compare performance frequently. Running a calibrated 77" LG CX.
Great video! One concern I have is if the back light of each system affects the overall capture with the camera. One is red and another is blue. Would that affect the capture?
@Pony Trash he just made a video a few days ago saying PS5 has the better media playa goofy accept the facts and stop crying XSX has raised blacks now show the update that fixed this I'll wait
@@n1nja_m0nkey my intentions when I wrote my comment was not to assume the opposite of what you wrote. It was merely to enlighten on Sony's intentions to update its service for its customers.
I’m using PS5 for discs, and my LG CX tv for streaming apps if I want Dolby Vision etc.. seems to cover most bases and not a lot of extra boxes littering the room.
Except some of the streaming apps have terrible banding and black crush. Watching civil war in Dolby vision on my Cx and it’s horrible in dark scenes, so much grey ghosting everywhere. Switch over to same scene on my 4K disc of the movie and the problem is solved. And both settings were identical. Streaming is so inferior.
I think the PS5's 4K blu-ray player will 'keep evolving' via firmware updates and become the best 4k player because remember back then the PS3's blu-ray player was rated most tech heads to be the very best BR player anyone can own.
The Xbox One X got me into 4k movies. Now, I have the Xbox Series X and it seems both consoles have the same quality for movies, both are good and a great introduction to 4k movies. I just bought the UB820 and it should arrive this Saturday. I'm excited to actually have a dedicated UHD player. Wish you and your family the best in 2021.
Well bro I am really sorry to hear 👂 that, I have the Xbox one x as well made the mistake to buy the ub820 and tried them on so many ways, many setups and I didn’t see nothing different, exactly the same and just to make sure before returning it, got few more people to give me their opinion, so I ended returning it.
@@TheDiegobernal I've had the UB820 for the past few days and there's a big difference between the UB820 and the Xbox UHD player. I have an LG CX, Samsung HW 950t, the Panasonic UB820 and Series X. It's a great setup and I feel lucky to have a great home theater and gaming experience.
I was using the one X as a 4K player and it was ok. I bought the UB820 as I didn’t really like the player UI on my Xbox. It is better with the Media remote as waking the controller is annoying just to pause etc. Myself and my Wife much prefer putting on a disc in the 820. It also has Dolby vision which looks great on our LGC8 oled. One thing on both these though is if you use an AV amp and pass everything through that then there are a few problems. If you use game mode on your TV for Xbox then put in a blu ray then you have to manually switch back to a different picture setting on the TV or you get milky blacks etc. It’s fine with a 4K disc as they auto switch to an HDR mode on TV but blu rays do not. You then manually switch back to game mode for Xbox. This is also the same with the stand alone player as the amp hdmi output goes into a single hdmi (arc) on the TV. It’s an easy process on the TV but I wish it would all detect what was happening better. I hope the newer TVs like the CX with ALL mode will do the trick which I will upgrade in the future. The 820 is fast. I also get better atmos sound through it than Xbox. I now have series X which I haven’t tried yet as the panny is a lot better as an experience.
Great comparison, as usual. However, very surprised you didn't touch on any audio decoding comparisons... From what I've read, getting atmos playback from ps5 is a multi step process (first choosing in settings, then again in options).
Another thing worth noting, is that for some weird reason you can't get enough headphone/DAC Volume via' USB when playing either Blu-ray's or DVD's on PS5. Volume sounds a little on the low side for my liking, and for me personally it's a deal breaker. Meanwhile, UA-cam gets plenty loud, yet streaming movies/TV is a step down. Volume could be higher, but it's not as low as using an actual disc. For those using a speaker system or sound bar you should have enough wiggle room to get discs and streaming as loud as you want. I'll be checking out the panasonic blu-ray player and using it's Toslink/Audio connection for LPCM 2 channel headphone audio. Hopefully it gets loud enough!
Thanks my brother, video was on point and very informative, not like I’m going to purchase a 4K blu-ray player, both systems will be brought either way cause I’m a gamer for both Xbox and ps5 systems, we only live once, thanks again my brother
@Pony Trash Vincent in video from 26 December LG CX OLED Best Picture Settings for PS5 Gaming at 13:56 "I think ps5 is better media playing machine", your console is worse in media playing and doesn't have any games but still decent enough so stop crying ;)
I've had a dedicated Sony 4K player for years and, I don't know if it's because it's newer or what, but the discs look noticeably better on my PS5. I originally got the disc version to have a "backup" player, but it's become my primary.
@@vspectra, I agree. The Series X Bluray app has that weird elevated blacks issue. I would think a simple bug like that is fixable with a firmware update, but Microsoft may not even care.
I love your video, I am a tech junkie and want to ask. Did you use hdmi wire that is for 4k or 8k? Also its important to inform you, most tv set there hdmi throughput to 1080p or hdmi 1.2, did you change the throughput from hdmi 1.2 to 2.1. Also make sure you use 3 feet hdmi cords otherwise loss of quality may occur with long hdmi connectors.
Happy to see it’s on par with a stand-alone player. Couldn’t care less about Dolby Vision, as long as it supports HDR 10+ by the time I upgrade my TV in a few years.
Thank you for this comparison. Have you considered doing an up conversion comparison of HD Blu-rays with consoles and UB820? Thanks again and Happy New Year!
Great comparison but I will not use my PS5 to play 4k movies, gaming only. I tried to use my Xbox 1 as a 4k player and found out quickly that it was not capable. Dedicated 4k player is the way to go for me.
Wish people would admit their televisions can't support Dolby Vision to begin with, unless your sweet can go beyond 1000 nits of brightness, you're not getting full usage out if Dolby Vision, it's why HDR10 is common in every set. Dolby Vision is a claim to better for a price but you'll not get what you paid for too begin with, just a promise of better visuals you'll not see unless you put it side by side. So which beyond 1000 nits screen are you using? How many Blu Rays are even encoded in Dolby Vision? Marketing has won you over and produced handful of content 🤦.
Good. I just got a PS5. I've had Samsung 4k screens for a few years, however this is my first 4k player. I ordered Mad Max: Fury Road in 4k UHD and expected it to arrive today. I also expect it to look awesome on 4k.

I watch a lot of movies And also play on the ps5 and PC im searching a tv that can do all of that. With correct colors and a good refresh rate like 120 hertz what would you recommend sir ?
Great video - curious on a topic you didn't mention: how bad is the PS5 fan noise when you play 4K blurays on it (compared to a dedicated player)? The main reason I got a standalone HD bluray player instead of using my PS4 to play bluray discs was the PS4 was so loud it was often distracting.
Darn, darn, darn! You're the first video maker I've found who actually bothered to examine the PS5 in Blue-Ray play... and the important question I had was answered by you (so thank you) and the answer isn't good for me... I own multiple 4K TV's but only 1 Blue-Ray player which can provide HDR10, HDR10+, Hybrid Log Gamma AND Dolby Vision and I was praying that the PS5 would play in all High Dynamic Range formats so I could simply move my Sony UBP-X700 4K to my second floor where my other TV is, along with my current PS4 Pro. I've posted on video after video after video after video all by different UA-cam makers asking what you have just answered. So I thank you and hate that I need to but not just a PS5 Disc (Console), but also yet another Sony UBP-X700 4K Blue-Ray player. Darn... if Sony had only used perhaps slightly different video chips in addition to the fee Dolby charges and just charged us all $10, $30, $50 more for the console which could then do what the Series X cannot (play Blue-Ray discs which are formatted in Dolby Vision HDR) I would have been extremely happy. But now I have no reason to try so hard to buy a PS5 (at least not until the PS4 Pro is no longer supported which just might be around the time a PS5 Pro unit is released). Thanks for making this video! Sincerely, David

@@Cody-Bear I meant 4K for the Pro 🤦🏾♂️
@@NintenPizza wow that's a good question but I honestly have no idea. I'm thinking your May be able to do that with the more expensive Panny UB9000
Thanks for doing both systems!
820s are awesome
Was your UB820 using the HDR Optimizer? It would be interesting to see the differences between the two especially with the Panasonic considering the optimizer is a killer feature mentioned by Vincent Tioh.
Great news. I was on the on the shelf between a dedicated and PS5 digital, or the PS5 disc. I ended up getting the disc version hoping that the blue-ray player would be good enough. Nice to see I'm not missing too much.
You are missing less than 1%
Perfect combination for me with the PS5 - game console / 4k bluray player!
Great review! You have a soothing voice which fits well in videos like these 👌
Thanks for sharing the information. Very helpful! Back during the PS3 day, I used it as a Blu-ray player because it loaded the disk fast.
Kobra sucks and that’s a fact
I still use my ps3 to watch blu rays!
PS3 still has the best DVD upscaling in all consoles and it has 3D Bluray support which PS5 is missing
I love comparison videos especially anything to do with PS5 or TVs. You my friend do the best comparison videos ever so amazing to watch and listen to
Thanks for your comparison.
A80J here with a UB820. Zero issues so far and fantastic picture quality.
@@redrock425 Thanks, and I am Glad to hear it. I returned the X800M2 and went with the Panasonic DP-UB820, and all my issues are gone plus, I don't have to switch to Dolby Vision manually.
@@petersonfamily6223well worth $ spent.
Would be cool to see the difference between the PS5 and the ub820 in Dolby vision!
I still have a sliver of hope that there will be a firmware update, with all the uproar. Then again, I can just as easily see Sony not doing it on account of the licensing fees. 🤷🏻♂️
@@moogle2crooks I know what you mean. I bought a 65” LG CX and felt like I wasn’t “getting the most” out of 4K discs on my new TV without a dedicated 4K player. That’s why I bought and tried the UB820 back to back with my PS5. You should do the same, then you will see what I mean when I say it’s not worth paying for the dedicated 4K blu ray player.
@@RedPanda555 Exact same boat, I have and love my 65CX... I may just have to do that. Again, I really appreciate your thoughts and advice. :)

Really liked the video merge comparison, that's really neat! Although next time I would switch the colors, blue is more associated with the playstation brand, overall awesome vid!
This video was 3 years back. Sp can you confirm if ps5 now is capable or not when it comes to playing 3d bluray discs.
That answers that question. Thanks for working very hard to give us the answer!
Great video! One concern I have is if the back light of each system affects the overall capture with the camera. One is red and another is blue. Would that affect the capture?
Not the capture, but our perception of the colors in the image, yes.
Great work! I hope you get some more subs. You deserve it with all the work I'm sure went into this video.
Didn't they fix the black issue on series X after it was pointed out by HDTVtest?
I don’t believe so. I don’t think they really care about it tbh, since it’s designed to be a gaming console first.
No

Very helpful content. I watched your video on streaming vs BluRay and now PS5 vs stand-alone BluRay. Thanks

Starting up was noisy, but it was quiet during playback
Very quiet. Loved using mine for movies.
You just answered many extremely relevant questions. Thank you for your valuable content… I really appreciate Mr. VillainMan
I think the PS5's 4K blu-ray player will 'keep evolving' via firmware updates and become the best 4k player because remember back then the PS3's blu-ray player was rated most tech heads to be the very best BR player anyone can own.
Is the PS4 a good blu-ray player?
Total non-sense.
@@toniromerogm2457 perhaps you should upgrade your tv to be able to see the difference. Just the Dolby Vision itself is a hell of an upgrade.
I can't believe ps5 doesn't support dolby vision because most of the new Sony TV'S do.🤔
Seems like a feature that could be added in a software update?
And all me need is a passthrough, don't we?
Using it right now. Glad I got the disc version.

Yah I’d hold onto it. But for people like me who didn’t own a 4K player, the 4K Blu-ray support on the ps5 is a big plus.
Amazing video bro, they are pretty much identical which I did not expect given the hype the standalone receives
Great comparison but I will not use my PS5 to play 4k movies, gaming only. I tried to use my Xbox 1 as a 4k player and found out quickly that it was not capable. Dedicated 4k player is the way to go for me.
That logo in your intro looks amazingly bright and awesome
No Dolby vision, not worth viewing on.

Good compare video as always, but FYI.. looks like your recording gear or transcoder has a banding problem. This video has faint purplish horizontal upward scrolling lines across the whole video frame.
Does the ps5 supports dtsx sound?
I dont have a ps5 yet but do plan to get one asap. This is the kind of video I've been after, however I've been more interested in comparisons with upscaling. I have the Panasonic DMP-UB900 and the upscaling is incredible. Any chance of a video comparing upscaling for dvds and blu rays?

Villaman. Question for you. I know the video quality was amazing you showed off but regarding the audio for atmos would you recommend the PS5 or Panasonic ? I have seen mixed opinions in terms of delayed audio on PS5. I have a PS5 but debating on dedicated player with my new entertainment center I'm installing
Very nice video
I have 2 questions 😃
So its not really worth the extra money for a 4k player now that i have a ps5 ?
And im searching for a good new tv mine is getting old ....
I watch a lot of movies
And also play on the ps5 and PC im searching a tv that can do all of that. With correct colors and a good refresh rate like 120 hertz what would you recommend sir ?
Which movie was it?
What looks like upscaling blu ray movies to 4k ?
When I played a blu ray movie disc on my ps5 it seemed to be playing at a lower frame rate
You can’t hear the fan while using the PS5. The BD driver can be loud at times though.
Good video what about a 4K Blu-ray player which plays DVD, how good is the upscale for DVD.
Is it me or getting a DVD player is not worth it??
Sincerely,
David
