- Panasonic has taken the wraps off its new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players just ahead of CES 2018. The Panasonic UB420 and UB820 will support HDR10+ from Ultra HD Blu-ray, and the UB820 will actually support Dolby Vision too following a firmware update!

Thank you ! I really like the funny touch you add to your video editing! 😄 Keep on feeding us with these good news !
I’m a huge fan of yours and here it is 2020 and Panasonic in the US 2020 as one of the top Blueray 4K players. Listed at $461 on Amazon is a spectacular deal! I’ve also got the Nakimachi 9.2.4 surround sound with the LG C9 👍🏽👌🏽🙌🏽
Your humor is awesome as your reviews. Excellent and work.
Thank you Vincent for this interesting video as always. It seems like the new Panasonic Blu ray players are more appealing than their new tv range of 2018, even more if they benefit of the dynamic lut.
Good stuff as always Vincent!
Thanks for all that info Vincent, it is funny how you think that you can explain something technical in a few minutes. You just can't stop when you start dishing out knowledge. :) And then munching chips before going to a dinner appointment. Made me smile, thx.
great review...i recently purchased the UB820 to upgrade my UB900,which doesn't have HDR10+ or DV to go along with my Sony A90J and i have to say after only watching two movies the difference is startling. So far so good.
This UB820 player sounds promising. Will definitely be watching out for this one when it comes out. Seems to me that it supports quite a lot of features and should also appeal to customers who only have budget to get a soso UHD TV for now and is planning to upgrade in the future.
The voice command funciton sounds funny at first... but should come in handy in said circumstances.
Now 2 years later its all about the HDR Optimizer feature! Who knew, great work Pana.
I'm buying a 4K BD player this year, so I'm looking forward to seeing more of these.
Your videos are really good!
video quality is getting better and better!
So this should be awesome for HDR projector owners because no projector can handle dynamic HDR yet. If the player can do it at the source and then send a steady HDR signal to the projector it would be an amazing upgrade for projector HDR capability.
Enjoy CES Vincent 😎
LOL, you really do add funny notes to your reviews.
Hi Vince. Thx for all your great content. I just recently purchased a UB 820 and I’m using it with a Sony 715 ES projector. Would they be able to tone map together or is it one or the other and if so which one would you prefer to tone map? Thx
Thank you for your review
Small/big technical question:
I have a tv samsung qe75q90r that is not dolby vision, only hdr10+.
If I buy a 4k dolby vision bluray player like ub820 that decodes these metadovers, would I have the equivalent of dolby vision on my TV?
In a way it would be the reader who will send the contrasting image dynamically to the TV that will only display it.
Thank you
When you go to CES, please corner LG and ask them when they are going to offer Dolby Vision firmware update on their blasted ultra Blu-ray player (up970)???!!! We’ve heard too many “standby promises.” Thank you for running an invaluable and informative UA-cam channel!
arashjahn they released it and then took it off the site because it was so buggy. I don't know why they can't seem to get it right.
i understand your point that hdr10+ and dolby vision is not a format war. however, from a video file buyer perspective it is. if i am going to buy into a display, and a player and commit to a media content stream with best possible image and sound, it is, in effect a format war. i have been a panasonic plasma fan boy for a long time. i have owned five over the years, and currently am using two. i was encouraged that panasonic was developing their own line of oled 4k sets. now they seem committed to hdr10+. most likely i will go that way, but what if dolby vision wins out on the content side? then i am limited to hdr only, and not the best possible image quality.
keep up the excellent content!
Otto Burgess I agree with this. I’m a multiple Panasonic plasma owner considering oled as a natural replacement. Won’t consider Panasonic without the Dolby support.
Unless I missed something I don't think Vincent ever said he doesn't believe there's a format war.
He said "the BDA says" there is no format war, and that he personally disagrees with them.
Hdr 10 and hdr10+ is backwards compatible which means that if you buy a disc with hdr10+ and your display only supports hdr10 then it will still play in HDR10. Same with Dolby vision discs. They have hdr10 metadata on the disc as well.
oh. thanks for the clarification. i must have gotten that wrong.
Playing HDR10 is not the same as playing HDR10+ or Dolby Vision though. It's best (until there's some standard/constant) that devices support both.
Hi there I have an older HDR TV the LG65EG960V that has static HDR so some movies are dull and some bright. With this player would I be able to use Dynamic HDR? Thanks
They kinda shot themself with no Dolby Vision support on their new OLEDs. Apple really changed the situation of Dolby Vision with their strong support with Apple TV 4K so now really makes sense to have Dolby Vision capable display. The decision from Panasonic is just idiotic and only hurt their sales number. Basically they are saying that buy our 4K player if you want to play Dolby Vision discs but don't buy our TVs for it because it don't support it
Adam Majorcsik their new oled do support DV
Adam Majorcsik even if they don't support it right now they will get it through an update just like the A1E bravia got Dolby vision support via update later on
At the very least Dolby Vision should always be an option you can pay to unlock.
Panasonic OLED TVs support Dolby Vision HDR and HDR 10+
@@budthecyborg4575 Why pay to unlock Dolby Vision that anti consumer.
as always, great.
I'm torn between the Panasonic ub900 and the ub820. Will there be an update on the ub900 for hdc10+ and or dolby vision? I have much invested in my audio and I hearaves aboiut the ub900
I have a Simple question. What blu ray player i should buy whit Panasonic ez950. The ub900, or just wait this new model?
I have a question for Vincent OR anyone that can help.
I have the LG Oled C7 65 inch.
Beautiful TV however I'm noticing some Banding problems when viewing free to air TV in HD 1080I or SD in 576I.
If there is a certain color background these Bands will appear on Walls, different TV scenes, the Sun going down or up it would be followed by these Bands!.
I've tried every mode setting possible.
When viewing 4K,HDR content no Banding issues at all that brings me back to think maybe it's a setting mode I haven't tried yet.
If anyone has this problem your advice would be great.
My Warranty runs out in December 2018.
Thanks again.
So vincent mentioned that the hdr optimizer will help lower end tv’s to improve picture quality in regards to tone mapping. What if you have an high end TV? Do you think the hdr optimizer will imrprove the picture quality or actually make it worse?
Has anyone compared lgs active hdr vs Dolby vision? Is there a huge difference? I dont want to upgrade my ub900 for Dolby vision if it's not worth it
Will the DMP UB-900 be updated to decode HDR-10 plus?
Hmmm, Kettle crisps... damn fine crisps there, Vincent!
Hey Vincent,
Do You know if the UB824 and or UB424 Support DTS:X ?
According to the spec sheet there‘s only DTS HD MA Support.
Hello! I just bought this as an upgrade to my previous 4K player. I installed the same way my last one was. HDMI Video/Audio Out plugged directly into my TV. Unfortunately on many of my movies the video is now slightly lagging the audio. This never happened with my previous player. Any idea what’s causing this, or how to fix it? Thanks!
I'm late to the party but I would like to hear from someone who used to own the panny dmp-ub900 amd upgraded to the dp-ub820- I own the UB900 connected to a 65inch Samsung KS8000-would the820 perform "better" for HDR than the UB900? I watched the video and with the optimizer ON and OFF I can see that the pic dims a bit...is it just brightness? etc..I want my 4K movies to look vibrant and with good contrast (I know my TV has limitations..is not an OLED but it's a good one!)...Just wondering if trying an 820 is worth it? I certainly cannot afford the new flagship UB9000!
thanks
Hey man I own dmb ub900 and was curious if it's worth upgrading to the new one if it would cost a couple hundred and all I have is hdr 10 led Sony that's 2 years old hopefully you can get back to me is the 4k processing worth the upgrade and does it make the picture clearer
Hey Vincent!
I’m really interested in this player to compliment my 65GZ1000U (& my AVR which can’t pass-through Dolby Vision), but I can’t get a clear answer RE: If this player can send Dolby Vision via one HDMI port & Dolby Atmos/DTS-X via the other HDMI port at the same time?
Will Panasonic release these players in the US or just for Europe only?
I hope Panasonic come back to the U.S. market
Agree. LOVE my Pana Plasma TV that is still running strong for 10 years now. Only issue is my main HDMI port has a harmomic high pitch sound thats intermittent. Time to upgrade my TV to 4k HDR now but need to make sure it has BOTH DV and HDR10+ so I agree its very suprising they have the player doing both formats but not the TV. doesnt make sense if they want a 1 brand system for their consumers instead of "mix and match" as many mid-high end AVR enthusiasts like to do with their HT equipment to get the best individual component for each specific purpose (TV, AVR, UHD Player, speakers, etc)
You can get them in Canada but I'm not sure how warranty would work.
I wonder if the UB "420" will be capable of displaying prettier and more relaxing colors and if it comes with a free copy of The Big Lebowski
6:40 LMAO.
Do you want a beer? :D
Apparently Warner Bros. has joined the HDR10+ alliance. Nice!
will this allow people to play mkv or be jailbroken to play 4k disc folders ?
Also when will the Panasonic Blu-ray player be available
Any news when will this be released here in the US? Ub420
Great Video again. Thx 4 that.
Does the 820 have a HDMI Input like Oppo 203? And Apps like Prime and Netflix?
Ma3nNi68 that would be awesome!
Glad I waited for 4 k blu ray player as was waiting for one to include Dolby vision just have to wait now till Black Friday to get one
Brownie Sg1
I’m with you ,that’s one hideous design
Brownie Sg1
Agree , design is terrible ! Panasonic should have mandatory drug testing for the engineers. Hopefully I can put it far away enough away to the side of my gear that I don’t notice it . Wish I could justify the cost of the 9000
After the LG fisaco of saying they'd support DV with a "Firmware update" I ain't buying anything until it's in.
yeah they can say "tomorrow" or "future" forever and then never make good on the "promise". best to get it built in so there is no excuses instead of waiting 6-12 months or more for a firmware that never comes...
Even when the LG player does get the update the machine will still suck. It seems very poorly constructed and is super loud. I have nothing against LG as I have an LG OLED but their player is sub par for the price.
I am thinking of buying a Panasonic TX-55FZ802B TV which only supports HDR10+ and a Panasonic DP-UB820EBK Blu Ray DVD player which supports both HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Will the TV benefit from Dolby Vision if the film is played though by the DVD player and not streamed directly to the TV, because the DVD player will be the device which is actually decoding the data????
Hopefully that this panasonic 4k players will be available in Singapore. Currently there is not much choice...either you get Samsung or LG.....
hello a technical question
I ask experts like you
Which of the Sony ubp-x800 and Panasonic ub820 has better picture / video quality? With greater realism more sharpness, details and colors? Many Thanks
UBP-X800M2 and UB 820 have similar quality but Panasonic UB -820 is more expensive m
How does the 820 compare to the ub9000?
Prices? When available?
Is this still a good player? Right now I’m playing my 4k blu ray rips on nvidia shield but lacking that Dolby Vision profile 7 with FEL support.
Have a PANASONIC TX-49FXW784 since 2018 which is a LED LCD 4K TV around 500 nits. Have since two weeks a PANASONIC DP-UB9004EGK can it also do 1000 nits or higher. Have now firmware 1.68 on it. Hope that I can enjoy the 4K UHD Blu-ray world of movies and series.
Excited for this new HDR10+ / DV Panasonic player to replace my old BD30 Bluray player so I can get into 4k. Just wondering what you thought of their decision to have the TV **NOT** support DV but the player does? Wouldnt they want people to buy their TVs *AND* their players both of the same mfg instead of getting a Pana player and other branded TV that DOES support DV?? seems strange. What happens to the signal if you play DV on the player and feed it to a non DV TV? does it give a warning that you cant play it?
Stephen Soukup it will just play in hdr10 as all 4k discs have to carry it.
At 3:12, you show a chart that is supposed to highlight the benefits of Panasonic's new processing. However, the "demo pics" they used certainly look good in the sky, but when you look at the ground, they make it look like that all Panasonic is doing is just cutting the brightness.
Note: Later in the video, the switching back and forth between HDR Optimizer On/Off doesn't appear to have this problem, so maybe it does work as claimed...
I love Panasonic, but they should have done better. At least my Lumix GH5S does what they claim. ;-)
Will ub820 look visually as good as ub900?
Will the oppo 203 play HDR10+?
From the official oppo page it says it will support hdr10 and dolby vision.
the oppo will have to if it wants to keep up , oppo 203 up for sale.
Hi Vincent/HDTVTEST I have a Samsung UBD-M9700 blu-ray player and my player is having 2 major problems 1 The words are not in Sync with the Peoples mouths
2 it will not let me do an Automatic update thru WIFI. i have to use a thumbdrive every time.
So I am going to be buying the Panasonic DP-820 Blu-ray player I just wanna make sure I wont Experience those same problems if I buy the Panasonic DP-820 4K blu-ray player.
Does the 820 have analog outputs for users with older amps?
ram64man yes it has a 7.1 analog Audio Output
Can someone please tell me which player would be better at playing music CDs? The Panasonic UB820 or the Sony X1000ES? And why you think that player is better at playing CDs. Thanks!
Sony UBP-1100ES and X800M2 are better for playing CDs SACD and DVD Audio
Did Vincent ever review this. I can’t find it?
Is hdr10 plus better than dolbyvision?
Finally! A Dolby Vision capable Player that is not Oppo. I guess Panasonic has built in enough processing power and will deliver the update (and doesn‘t fail like LG). So kudos for that. Maybe we see the start of devices supporting both because they finally realized that pissing off their customers with format wars hurts their sales.
Just got the UB 820. A message inside says that the voice control will cease by June (or maybe July?) 2023.
Hahaha you are hilarious my man! Great information thanks!
Will the UB900 get a firmware update to play HDR10+ discs?
Rizwan Daudi does anyone know if it will??
I was wondering the same thing
Vincent do you think the ub900 will get a software update for hdr 10+ just got it 2 months ago😕
Start a patreon so we can support you with cash. Love your work. Huge respect and support.
Love the potato chip edit!!!
Is DOLBY ATMOS supported as well?
Still need to know this.
Hello,
Having an LG 65C8 will you suggest Panasonic DP-UB820 or Sony X800m2?
I went with the Panasonic. Currently upgrading from a Sony ubp-x700
@@eg619rip is it a good upgrade ?
@@latinochico if you have an OLED TV, it is a MUST upgrade. I still have both systems and to be fair, they both function very well but I did notice less freezing and slightly better colors on the panasonic
The UB820 features make it SOUND like it is higher end than the UB900. Why did they go down in their model number? Why isn't it a UB920? If it is indeed better than the UB900, seems like a big marketing mistake.
They are reserving the 9 series for a later flagship model.
Not a format war?
Are you sure?
Is this still a good buy? Or has something better come along?
Still great bang for buck.
Perhaps some new ones will release this year, but doubtful.
Another great review Mr Vincent , Unfortunate for them that you were interupted while reviewing the products anyway maybe next review they will leave you alone and not be so forceful . Damn .
After updating the firmware on the Panasonic dp-ub824 player from 1.64 to 1.69, the picture became worse on regular Blu-ray discs. Whoopi Goldberg's hair is no longer sparkling with contrast and there is less detail on the faces than before. There are extra noises that were not there before, the color is noisy at times, the white color is not as bright as before. I compared it with my old Panasonic dmp-bdt110 player, but before the new 4K blue ray showed a little better, but now it's worse. This probably applies to 4K discs as well. Details on people's faces are gone, the image no longer sparkles as before, and the color smears and makes noise on some films.
Dolby atmos?
Who is backing up Dolby vision anybody know please
Ice Icemann Sony, LG, Apple so far
Vizio tv's support Dolby vision
Sean Lacroix yeah I also did some more research Netflix Apple TV Sony LG Vizio Lionsgate supposedly are supporting dobly vision right now
Sean Lacroix thanks thought I was missing one or two.
Just another format war...companies never take the lesson!
This player support HDCP 2.2?
Why would you even ask that?! Do you know ANYTHING about 4k blu ray players?! 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Chill Bill fuck you how about thai?🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
would you prefer this player over the xbox one x?
Yes.
Thanks. I am on the market for a player. I want dolby vision, atmos and just a great player. I know Oppo is the best, but I cant see paying triple for it because its no longer being manufactured. So this would be the next best thing to get?
That is the way i eat crisps
I have halted all HDR investments for now because they can't come up with standards for it. Until that happens I'm not interested... to buy it. I'd just want to update my 2014 4K TV to new one that has 3D and perfect or near perfect blacks.
MadFinnTech HDR10, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Vision are all standards, how many more standards do you want?
The 820 model sounds like it could be a buy if it has a display. Yeah, I refuse to buy one that doesn't have a display. Call me old-school. More info it shows, better.
Ахахахаха! Ты просто красавчек! 😀👌
Is it just me, or does Vincent look like he's wearing lipstick in the hotel room sequence...? 😱
My hands are also usually greasy from vaseline whenever I'm watching bukkake videos on my new Panasonic. So voice control will be a welcome feature!
So, I guess Panasonic TV's will support Dolby Vision sometime soon?
Hope so.
They have not ruled it out but don’t wanna pay the fees hence HDR10+. I’m sure Apple has swayed them. If the next Xbox and PS5 do Dolby Vision only I’m sure Panasonic, Samsung/Hisense etc will have to do DV too.
I hate how these companies can't establish some kind of standard ahead of time. I'm sure they do it on purpose so that they can make more money. And this isn't going to end any time soon. It will probably go on as long as commercial technology continues to exist. Total pain in the ass for consumers.
Joolz1982 which is stupid because the licence fee is only about 6 bucks for each tv sold.
This is really strange. Whats the point of adding Dolby Vision to the Panasonic players, but not the TV. So in essence, I buy the panasonic player & look for another TV that also supports Dolby Vision ?
They should just come up with one solid HDR format and call it a day, this whole HDR+ vs Dolby Vision vs Advanced HDR nonsense is annoying from a consumer POV.
Wow I like how those guys pushed you out when your trying to explain their product. You should just say Panasonic is garbage buy an oppo203 on eBay.
How dare they interrupt Vincent in the middle of a video.
They did my boy Vincent wrong! Didn't show him the respect he deserves.
lol so much for no dv support on Panny players. Oh, Vincent.......
Sadly I decided not to chase the elusive Panasonic products in US markets. Three launch dates have passed. I simply accept their decision.
So disappointing and lazy of Panasonic not to bother updating the design of these 'boxes'. Loved the design of the T700 & T500 blu-ray player but these are boring, dull and remind me of CD players back in 1986 same with LG, Samsung etc!!! It's as if they don't care really care about disc based products which is fair enough as it's a very tiny market (I stopped buying disc in 2011) but come on, in a world of great design.
Actually 4k blu-ray is out selling regular blu-ray for the same time frame.
U K videos are to long
hdr+ is jus another marketing gimmick.. next year, hdr++, hdr ultra+, hdr super ultra +. mark my words
I believe you. I won't buy anything until these features stop appearing. They all want their proprietary feature to corner the market to make BB. That's why Panasonic won't put DV on their TV's, not gonna pay Dolby.
Just take back your word 'troll' by seeing you its most suites you
This is the worst player I've ever had. It stops playing 4ks after a little over 1 year. My 1st one stopped playing 4ks while the blu ray kept playing discs. I bought another same model. Same exact issue at around the same exact time frame. Funny when the warranty is only for 1 year. Total bullshit and a rip off at $450 pricetag.
Pls get some one eglish speaker because we dont understand your language
I understood it perfectly fine you troll. As I'm sure 99% of the other people who watch these videos does.
pradhumman singh You might want to think about learning it yourself before hating on others.
Fuc* that Dude!!!!!!!!!!!
