    Please do not judge image quality solely from this video alone, because our camera's limited dynamic range cannot fully capture the HDR presentation accurately.
    Also, 2017 OLEDs introduce some blue tint off-axis which is unavoidable due to our camera/ TV placement, leading to colour differences which are not present in real-life viewing.
    But hey, it's in 4K! :-)

    You could zoom in closer so we could see that graininess that you said is visible in the oppo but smoothed out on Apple TV.
    For HDR you could record twice: once with longer exposure / wider aperture so we can compare the darks and see the blockiness you mentioned, and once with shorter exposure / narrower aperture so we can see the detail in the bright regions.

    Great video. One of the biggest questions many have is whether Dolby Vision content with a lower bitrate from Apple TV looks better than UHD Blu-ray in HDR10 (i.e. without dynamic metadata). Studios seem to be releasing many more movies in Dolby Vision on Apple TV and simply releasing HDR10 to UHD blu-rays. A huge bummer for enthusiasts.

      Seeing what's going now with films and TV shows being potentially taken down, censored, or altered, discs might have a new value. Perhaps this won't matter to a casual viewer of a product, but more series fans might care. And, in fact, there are still many things still not available for streaming or even purchase digitally.

    I think the difference between Audio if you use a good AV receiver is massive between Digital and Disc format, but as Vincent has highlighted the image/video quality is much lesser a difference.

    Luminance fluctuation is still a problem. I just watched Wonder Woman on the Apple 4k TV (OS 11.1) on a LG B7 Oled and the luminance fluctuated dramatically several times when moving between day and night scenes.

  • @aalb1970
    @aalb1970 6 років тому +1

    Question for Vincent:
    Did you notice any luminance issues during playback? Currently Dolby Vision playback over HDMI from the Apple TV and Chromecast on LG OLED televisions introduces some annoying luminance fluctuations mainly in dark scenes which destroys black levels. You can see it quite clearly in letterboxed movies by oserving how the black letterboxed changes between black to dark grey. It doesn't happen when using LG's built in Netflix app. One example is the Netflix show "Manhunter" episode 8 frem 8:40 and forward.

    Great comparison. I've heard (can't find the source so just spreading rumors) that Apple does it's own encoding for iTunes and AppleTV. If that's so, bit-rate isn't telling you the whole story. The quality of the encoder makes a difference too. A few years ago JPEGmini came out with a proprietary JPG encoder that created stock-standard JPG files with a higher perceptual quality at the same file size. The same can apply to video.

  • @HoldandModify
    @HoldandModify 4 роки тому +6

    In short, for most they look the same. The 384kbps bitrate for audio is a concern though. Although none of my friends I did blind audio tests with could tell the difference. ATV has even more film snow supporting increased audio bitrate too. Netflix and Amazon as well. My video torture test is the opening of Shutter Island when the boat comes out of the fog. Ultimately I prefer the on-demand nature of streaming and not having to create shelf space for discs. Also, so few discs in DV. Let's not forget ATV increases bitrate and resolution as time and tech moves forward. For free.

    Streaming is more convenient, but I really prefer the higher quality of the blu ray disks. Reason, I play extra for Netflix premium but the compression is so bad that I really don't notice a difference. Vs if I pop in a disk it's like night and day.

    Lol at the beginning (LG A1!) but at 13:00 I was wondering how come both TVs suddently had their own stands. Only at the end it became clear why.
    Vincent you mentioned it several times but did not provide a number: what was that exact *normal viewing distance* you were watching these 65" 4K panels from?
    This is very important because for normal 20/20 vision, after just 2.58 meters we would *not* be able to resolve Full HD resolution pixels on a 65" panel, much less 4K pixels. To take advantage of 4K over Full HD on a 65" panel, we would need to sit closer than 2.58 meters (but not closer than 1.29 m in order to still not resolve 4K pixels.) Too close viewing distances are not always comfortable or practical, but what I mention above is the case because of how our eyes and visual acuity work.
    If a typical viewing distance for a 65" tv is large enough (> 2.6 m,) that actually works in favor of Apple TV. Precisely the extra detail offered by the UltraHD Bluray cannot be resolved by normal vision at those distances on these panels. (Of course, quite not so few people have better-than-normal 20/20 vision though.)
    HDR always remains impactful regardless of resolution, but viewing distance is critical with respect to resolution and detail, and it might render 4K effectively useless over Full HD (or UltraHD Bluray over Apple TV, for that matter.) Wrote about this on my personal blog quite a while ago, with further details:

    How do you get the Apple box to display info like mbps ? And that it’s actually upscaling the picture? I’ve been dying to do that for years

    Have you ever reviewed a Nvidia Shield TV 4K? Or have you ever checked out plex? Would love to see you review that as it’s what I mainly use with my new LG 4K

    I have a LG 55B7 and have severe lipsyncing issues with my sound when I feed it with Dolby Vision from Apple TV 4k. 😕 It gets acceptable if I go down to 4k HDR.
    Any tips on how to remedy this? Tried fiddling with the audiosync but can't get it anywhere near acceptable.

    On my old apple tv box if the broadband wasn't fast enough all I have to do is pause for 10 minutes and the box buffers enough to play at best quality, does the new one not do this ? I mean why does it have 64 gigabytes of memory ?

    Do these 2017 OLEDs have the latest FW? I think LG just released a new one where it addressed syncing issues and some flickering.. Anyway, I’m glad to know that the differences in fast motion is not that big too.

    The only thing missing from AppleTV 4K is Dolby Atmos support. To me that makes a bigger difference than the very slight difference in image quality.

    you should have compared the final Spider-man vs Vulture or the Avenger's cargo plane hijack scenes since they are very dark and will, uh, highlight the differences in shadow detail rendering and/or retention.

    My question would be: How does the Apple TV 4K measure against Netflix? Does the bought movies from iTunes in 4K have better PQ? And by that I especially think of noise, because personally I cannot stand the amount of compression noise I get in the picture from Netflix, but I kind of want to avoid having to store all the movies I see. So for that reason I want to see if I can use the Apple TV 4K and buy the movies from iTunes instead.

    Fantastic and informative video as usual Vincent! Question, does the bit rate include audio data as well? Or is it strictly video data?

    • @hdtvtest
      @hdtvtest 6 років тому +1

      Audio data is listed separately.
