I can braid the overlay tight enough to get my optimal tension, and I think saving the tight braiding for the overlay gives me more control over where the tension lets up. I don’t like the idea of accumulating stiffness over multiple layers.
For sure, I used to think about it very differently, but sometimes the results defy reason and I think we have to temper our intuition with practice and field experience. I remember when I first started down the road of omitting binding from my transitions, and the first thing I found was that the arc of the thong looked great but I consistently had a kink right off the handle. So then I started experimenting with fewer bellies, no bellies, and graduated tension, and over time I got to a point where I can get that strong transition with fewer layers and no additional materials. We have to be willing to try stuff that doesn't make intuitive sense, I guess is my conclusion

This is an amazing video on the whip making process, and I am a big fan of your detailed descriptions of the choices you make. I have tried making leather whips before, but this makes me want to dive into Kangaroo work.
