This is, from start to finish, the construction of a Tachi model kangaroo bull whip. Some parts are sped up, but every step is covered from hide to cutting targets. This isn't meant to be a step by step guide to make a whip, although some people might find it helpful. The purpose of this video is to demystify the process. When you place an order at Swordguy Builds, this is what happens, from the beginning to end.

    21:30 Similar thoughts recently from the nylon perspective. I can braid the overlay tight enough to get my optimal tension, and I think saving the tight braiding for the overlay gives me more control over where the tension lets up. I don’t like the idea of accumulating stiffness over multiple layers.

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 19 днів тому

      For sure, I used to think about it very differently, but sometimes the results defy reason and I think we have to temper our intuition with practice and field experience. I remember when I first started down the road of omitting binding from my transitions, and the first thing I found was that the arc of the thong looked great but I consistently had a kink right off the handle. So then I started experimenting with fewer bellies, no bellies, and graduated tension, and over time I got to a point where I can get that strong transition with fewer layers and no additional materials. We have to be willing to try stuff that doesn't make intuitive sense, I guess is my conclusion

    I'm in the southwest and have a hard time finding a place to crack that has dry green grass. When I go to a park, the cracks disturb the pets in homes nearby. Also, if it's loud, people think they're hearing a gun or something...frustrating.

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 2 місяці тому

      I definitely understand that struggle, something that you may try is focusing on techniques that travel horizontally rather than vertically, just to keep the whip off the ground. There are also fluffy or floaty materials you can use in place of the cracker so that it doesn't make sound (or so it makes much less sound), that may be something to experiment with so you don't scare pets or get angry neighbors yelling at you. I've been in the same position!

    ive been dropping strands 2 at the same time, is it better to drop one at a time?

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 7 місяців тому

      I think it's always better to drop two strands together, but that's really just personal preference. The only time you'd have to drop two together is when you're maintaining a chevron pattern, and in all other cases it really doesn't matter

  • @nicozijl

    Thank you Tory, this is brilliant! How would one go about to transition from under one over one to double strand under two over two. Im not sure how to bring in the second strand?

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 7 місяців тому

      It sounds like you're referring to a shift from single diamonds to double diamonds; which is a transition I actually do for the Eco Indy whips. The second strand was a killer for me as well, and what I found I really like is making the "last two" end in u1o1 just like "last one". I had to try a few different sequences before I landed on that, try it and see if that guides the rest of your transitional steps

    I never thought of using diamond plaiting for that. Hmm I wonder .. u said uve made over 750 in 5 years. Question ? Have u ever tried plaiting the entire whip in diamond plaite... it would be pretty stiff I think.. maybe on say a 5 or 6 ft bullwhip I think it would make a very quick action. Just wondering if uve tried it. I'm going to get some more cord next payday and try it. I was thinking a 8 ft with 2 1/2 weighted core, 2 diamond plaite bellies, then maybe a 14 plaite outer cover. If it turns out good I'll let ya know.

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 8 місяців тому

      I haven't done an entire whip in single diamonds, and actually I don't do my transitions in diamond plait anymore either. Once I realized the diamonds are only tighter because you have to pull harder to get the strand through the extra unders and overs I just started braiding my herringbone tighter, it's much easier on the hands and also allows me to pack the strands closer together than in diamond plait.

    What exactly is the point/purpose of dropping the strands though? I've yet to find anyone explain this. Thanks.

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 9 місяців тому

      Dropping strands is necessary to continue the taper of the whip. If we're talking specifically about nylon, where you can't taper the strands, if you didn't drop at all you'd have too much mass at the end of the whip, and that whip wouldn't handle well at all, certainly not from a sport perspective. The only times you don't drop at all are when you're braiding leather, which can taper with the belly, and even then only up to about 8 plait. Any more strands than that and you're almost always looking at dropping, even if the strands themselves taper. To put it another way, you need a certain amount of cumulative strand width to cover the belly; as the whip tapers, you'll find yourself with too much cumulative strand width to cover comfortably, and that's when you drop.

    • @safeeffective385
      @safeeffective385 9 місяців тому

      @@swordguybuilds Okay, that clears up quite a bit for me... thanks much. Only thing that's kicking my ass now, is I'm trying to figure out how to drop strands and resume the correct pattern, but each time I've tried that it inevitably gets screwed up/doesn't align the same anymore. Can you suggest any clip/video/tutorial that explains that? I appreciate you A LOT!

    • @swordguybuilds
      @swordguybuilds 9 місяців тому

      Thank you very much! I actually don't know if I've seen a video that explains it comprehensively, but I can probably share one or two of the rules. You do need to drop two strands at a time, and within the same sequence; that is, if you drop a strand on one side but work the one on the other side before dropping, the pattern will break. You also need to either drop both strands from the top and then both from the bottom the next time, OR if you drop one-top-one-bottom each time, figure out which side needs to drop which way. It's difficult to be more specific than that because the cues I look for are strictly visual, but I'll try to put together a video that explains it better. Hope that helps

    i got an 8ft bullwhip a couple months ago because we have a bear that lives somewhere either on our property or our neighbors property so i just got it as a noise maker and then my wife decided she did like the idea after all for taking on walks so i ordered her a really nice three bellied 32 plaited 3ft snake whip from a custom maker but it won’t be here for some time. hers has an intigrated dyneema fall with a titanium ball chain core and it should be really responsive with three bellies and heavier as well so i think it would be incredible for a self defense whip but there’s not a lot of tutorials about that sort of thing. i think that this is great content, keep it up.
