Was almost arrested at the Calgary stampede a decade ago for having and using a 15ft bullwhip. Was forced to put it in the garbage (which I later grabbed back). The people loved it, the police notsomuch....
This is by far thee best whip making method I’ve found so far, like Nick said it’s the cheapest and quickest way to make a fine whip, that even Harrison ford would be proud to use and own.🎉
This is so cool... of all the years of watching UA-cam, I have never watched a video that was not only from my home town, but also something that fascinates me and that I am going to try some day. You guys are awesome, thank you.
Great to see both of you collaborating together again. I watched the video then got straight on to making one. Definitely a "bare bones" whip. I made a whip in the past with 2 ungutted bellies but not an overlay but will try in the future. For those who like to save on waste (like me) these are the lengths i used with about a foot (300mm) to play with at the end. Overlay 1st - 21.5ft or 6.55m 2nd - 20ft or 6.1m 3rd - 18ft or 5.5m 4th - 17ft or 5.2m 5th - 13ft or 4m 6th - 11ft or 3.55m 7th - 8.5ft or 2.6m 8th - 7ft or 2.15m Thanks to Nick and Adam for another great video and hope they colab again soon.
Thanks to both of you guys! I became fascinated with whips after seeing Adam perform at the Az ren festival last year. And then I randomly came across Nicks micro bullwhip video about a month ago. In that time, I’ve built two bullwhips, 3.5ft and 5.5ft, a performance hybrid 4.5ft, and a 3.5ft snake whip. It’s a new hobby that my Son and I are really enjoying! Thank you!
Hahaha Adam I Remember your rope , chain , and duct tape whip . I made 1 of those . Then a dog trainer I met liked it so much I made 1 for him . That whip was tough and easy to make . Good to see you are still around .
Adam my friend, you are the man when it comes to whip making. I enjoyed this video as much as any on here. Thank you so much for making this whip so all like me could enjoy it. Your braiding skills are spot on!!!
Hey Nick. Could you make a video showing the differnet types of round braids your method of "over X under Y on the left, over Y under X on the right resonated with me and got me a lot closer to understanding how to round braid.
dear nick, thanks much for sharing this information. my second whip was a 4ft snakewhip, using your 2018 method, and it came out nicely. subsequently i received my first request for a whip. my go-to is the bare bones (for now) as it is a time saver. i learned so much, making a bare bones for the second time. much appreciated. i hope that the two of you are well.
Almost finished my whip. I had a braided belly I had started a few years ago. So I used it for this build. Definitely should have paid a little closer attention to how long it was.... it's just shy of 7ft without the fall. I definitely had to get creative with finishing the handle. Gutted the ends and laid them evenly. Wrapped with some nano cord, hockey tape and did a grapevine hitch with some type 1 paracord. The demonstrations look a little off but it should crack!
I followed this video and made one and turned out awesome, so I made another and doubled every measurement except for the fall, and cracker. Man that long one is really loud, but wears a guys shoulder out after a few cracks! Great video
This is fascinating... I'm not a whip making expert by any stretch but I've made a couple of whips based off of Nick's older tutorials, at least one of which was a really early one from before he learned that, "some people think that tape in a whip is a really bad thing"... I laughed harder than I should have at that little side comment. I've been meaning to get around to doing one of his snake whips for a while now, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I really didn't think I was going to like the way the cord lays with the core still in, but I honestly don't hate this. It's a little chunkier, but I honestly think I don't mind the extra texture with the color pattern like this. I don't know if I'd like it as well on a solid color whip, but it works for this. I'm going to have to put one of these together and see how it feels. I honestly despise having to strip the core strands out of what seems like miles of paracord, so if this works I'd probably be more inclined to play with more whip builds. Good job, guys. I'm a huge fan of both of you, so it's great to see you working together on stuff like this. Keep it up
I've had a lot of success making snake whips using the reverse plait method never tried with a bull whip. I have no success with leaving the guts in, so that one I'm gonna have to really look into. Awesome job guys beautifully done of course.
You're an amazing man to watch braids I don't know how you can keep them all their strengths in order my eyeballs can keep up to you you're good at what you do that's for darn sure
Thank you so much for taking you time and explaining everything so clear. I just found out about whip making a couple days ago and i'm gonna give it a try.
I used this technique to make a 1m snake whip and it slaps. Started with a doubled-up 4m piece and added a loop every 20cm ending in a 10 plait with 30cm of the core loaded with BBs. Used the end cap of an old broom handle.
I love this and have now done 4 whips using this build method. I created a weighted core by replacing the fiberglass rod with a 3/8"x10" carriage bolt fixed with a gutted 1100 strand filled 6" with 3/8 slingshot steel shot, followed by 10" of copper-plated BBs, followed by a fused 550 un-gutted strand for a total length of 52". I then wrap that in the 10 tapered core-strands and the rest basically follows the video from there. Since my handle-core is a little longer (52" instead of 48"), I add-in the core about 4 inches earlier than shown in the video. The resulting whip feels great, is super easy to crack, and still provides 6' to 7' whip accuracy. 😊
@@greghanson-w3d 4. This video started me off. 😃 But I'm a quick study - my very first one came out quite nice though with some gaps and no intentional pattern. Cracks and targets well, but was a bit light because I used a wooden dowel for the handle but otherwise built it exactly as demonstrated. After watching a few other whip makers I started using the bolt and shot/BBs for the core and the results have been excellent. I recently started working on #5 which is my first gutted-strand 8-footer with the same core but a plaited belly instead of just tapered and wrapped. It's coming along nicely, but my hands and forearms are suffering. 😒
@@sonofgeorge8778 thanks. ive been thinking i should add a little mass . my greater question is how to expand the design to 8 or 8.5. would i merely add a bit to each section before adding. also, how to stagger the core properly, any input would be much appreciated.
@@greghanson-w3d I was thinking about that myself. I was going to make a 6' core/belly, and then just add the difference in inches where each new strand is added in, so instead of 8 inches I would maybe do 10 or 11. I also thought it could be build the exact same way (but with a longer core/belly), and use the same measurements, except go up to 18 or 20 plait instead of just 16. My first attempt didn't work out. I finished the 5th whip and it's great, but I only got it to 7', not 8', so I screwed up my measurements somehow. Will let you know details if I build a successful 8-footer using this method. 👍
@@sonofgeorge8778 I really need to stop procrastinating. I think I'll add a foot to the belly, and a foot to the point before inserting the belly. I just need to hurry up and start my first whip. I braided other items so I have many of the skills in place.
I know you have a video out on how to add strands, but would it be possible to get a second video on how to add strands in where we can see footage from all four sides as you’re adding those strands, pretty please? Still in the middle of the video but really enjoying it.
I've never tried reverse plaiting/English eye but this makes me want to give it a go. I have a complete core here which has been sitting on the couch for about 6 months so when time permits I'll hang it up and have a shot.
I I definitely need to watch the braiding part several times. I couldn’t follow it the first time I watched it. Hopefully I can get it after a few times watching.
I agree! I am almost done with my first whip following this method, every step was super easy to follow except the braiding. Here is how I figured it out: divide the strands by 2, left and right, then divide by 2 again, top and bottom. Pull the strand from the top most position, around the back and split the strings in half as you go through them. So if you have 4 strings, that’s 2 for each side, braid in between the 2. Go left right left right always placing the next strand crossways to the last strand you braided. If you have 8 strands, go between two as you come around, if you have 12 strands, go between 3 as you come around. 16, go between 4. Strand counts 6, 10, 14 don’t quarter, so left side, round down, right side round up. I don’t think it matters much if you round up or round down left versus right as long as you do it the same over the whole whip. The transition will just go top or bottom depending on your choice. Hope this helps!
Adam I must say I read the books on whip making and after this video and your single belly whip video I gotta say you change my perception on whip making completely different then nicks almost religious method of whip forming I’d like to shake your hand one day for real! I also have like I can think of 4 solid questions about whips right after the handshake so heads up

If I may make a suggestion that pocket is designed to fit a zippo in it, the suggestion is swap out that crappy Bic lighter for the zippo. Zippos are great and are refillable also you won’t get a burnt finger when the striker gets hot.
Nice. I made one bullwhip with the latest "lastest method " video from Nick (so you have an idea of my inexperience). And I like this video (I plan to try making my second whip this way but with turk's head) but when I saw Adam wrap the whole core length it seemed tedious because of the need to constantly make the sinew strand go around. I wonder if having a swivel where you attach the handle (like a dog leach fastener or some such) which would let you turn the whip around freely would make the process easier.
A tip for your sinew wrapping: Make a small coil from the working end and then you can roll it over and around whatever you're wrapping, almost like a roll of tape!
Love the video still watching it. Here is a simple solution to making it a little easier and faster get a dog leash swivel snap hook hope it helps out.
When braiding 6 strands why do you use a different pattern on left and right side u1o2, u2o1? It would be nice to explain it. (same question for the 10 plait section)
Hi, Doing the 6,10 and 14 plait this way helps keep the plait lines equally spaced round the whip specially when using 2 or more colours. This is a bit confusing for beginners. Hope this helps.
I wish I could buy one of your whips but im so poor I have to scrap for each bill every month including food and home essentials id love to learn but got lost on the branding
There needs to be more in depth whip making videos. It's a hobby I never got I to but have always wanted to make and know how to make my own simple whip
Have any idea what a rough estimate for 8', 10' and 12' (most concerned with 8') whips would be? I don't know all the ins and outs of whipmaking math lol
Hi. If you have the strand lengths for a 6' but want to make a 8' this worked for me when I first started. Example 6' to 8' Strand = 24ft Whip = 6ft 24 ÷ 6 = 4 4 × 8 = 32ft It also works if you want to make a shorter whip. Example 12' to 8' Strand = 36ft Whip = 12ft 36 ÷ 12 = 3 3 × 8 = 24ft Hope this helps
Canada Whips has a video for a making a hybrid with a pvc handle. He describes very clearly what goes over and under as he goes along and as he drops strands. It helped me a lot. ua-cam.com/video/KTUWcJWazo0/v-deo.htmlsi=pp8nZFo7f-VkOm-L

Did you try how a whip of this pattern behaves when you wax it?
I was able to use this tutorial to make my own Indiana Jones Bullwhip! I was even able to learn the turkshead knots and make the wrist loop! 😃
I know they're still an excess amount of cord at the end, but would the provided strand lengths be enough to make a 4 strand diamond handle pattern?
Really liked the video of you two ,one making ,one recording. I would like to try to make an 8 ft bullwhip. Where can I find the measurements ?
Opinions on using #10 or #8 gauge electrical wire for the core?
I made my first whip from the light blue whip video you and Adam made some years ago. Looks like this'll be my second one.
Me too, I've been making them since using that formula with some adjustments from Nick's other videos

Can anyone tell me the names of these knots or links me to videos of them? This is an amazing video but I'm having trouble following the weaves!
What would all of the measurements be if I wanted to make a longer whip? Like a 10 footer for instance
A less tedious method would be to tape it together using electrical tape or athletic tape.
Nick is back 🙌🙌🙌
Little green spider, probably a lynx spider. Great little spider, loads of personality
Question - the handle pole, what other materials could i use? Could i use a carbon arrow for example or does it need to be solid?
Is that a Drum KIt sitting on that platform deck?
A tip for your sinew wrapping: Make a small coil from the working end and then you can roll it over and around whatever you're wrapping, almost like a roll of tape!
Have You ever considered to use K Tape for building Whips?
Hi I would like to buy that one, just let me know how.
Abandon Apple! Haha
Great video guys
I'm trying to wrap my mind (no pun intended) around how to maintain the necessary girth when transitioning from the handle to the rest of the whip.
🤯
Seeing those two dangerous spiders would be enough for me to leave and never come back.
What about the basket? You worked that also?
how much sinew do you need? and does un waxed sinew work?
Adam cut the fiberglass at 12". if i were to cut at 13-17 would it behave a bit like a hybrid stock whip? anyone with advice is welcome.
What if you were to use a spike for the handle?
good afternoon.how much does your whip cost and can it be sent to Russia?
Love the video still watching it. Here is a simple solution to making it a little easier and faster get a dog leash swivel snap hook hope it helps out.
Every Tesla should come with a bullwhip!
I found it to be very interesting
Hello, how can I buy a 3 meter whip from you? Do you have a virtual store?
Самый простой метод!
Молодец! 🤝🇷🇺
Awesome !!!
You could try putting a turks head over the rubber chair piece.
it would be a cool shape heel knot
I could not find how much rope to get. Does anyone know?
انا احتاج واحد من فضلك وكام السعر انا من مصر❤❤
amazing!
Adam: There are no accidents in whip making.
A few... moments... later
Adam: oops! Forgot to cut one lol😂 Love you Adam
I meant to say “no happy accidents”, like what Bob Ross used to say.
I apologize!!! Once U get started making the whip the camera person did a PERFECT JOB!!!
When braiding 6 strands why do you use a different pattern on left and right side u1o2, u2o1? It would be nice to explain it. (same question for the 10 plait section)
Hi,
Doing the 6,10 and 14 plait this way helps keep the plait lines equally spaced round the whip specially when using 2 or more colours.
Great video boys, cheers🍻
Could you also insert the lengths in Metric, would make the video more popular in the rest of the world:)
Have any idea what a rough estimate for 8', 10' and 12' (most concerned with 8') whips would be? I don't know all the ins and outs of whipmaking math lol
Hi.
If you have the strand lengths for a 6' but want to make a 8' this worked for me when I first started.
Example 6' to 8'
Strand = 24ft
Whip = 6ft
24 ÷ 6 = 4
4 × 8 = 32ft
It also works if you want to make a shorter whip.
Example 12' to 8'
Strand = 36ft
Whip = 12ft
36 ÷ 12 = 3
3 × 8 = 24ft
Hope this helps
Lol I can't keep up with the braid . Lol I will just buy a whip 😂 but it is interesting how its made 😊
you make it look so easy but its not I have trouble with the plaiting I get confused as to which one to bring under & the pattern goes wrong
Canada Whips has a video for a making a hybrid with a pvc handle. He describes very clearly what goes over and under as he goes along and as he drops strands. It helped me a lot.

Huuuuuyyyyyyyyyyyyiiii la verraquera esos látigos decimos en Colombia
Is there any reason this method would not work for building a snake whip
Hi, it should work just fine. However, I might recommend strengthening the area 10 in down from the heel knot to make it a little stiffer.
Success, but my back aches from braiding.
