  • here we show you two alternative methods to changing your brake pads on cars with electronic parking brake caliper.
if you don't have diagnostic equipment to put it into service mode. or any special wind back tools or piston compressor kits
method 1 requires spade connectors and wiring plus jump leads to connect to a 12v battery.
method 2 requires M8 spline (8mm) to wind the piston. and T30 torque to remover the motor bolts.
both methods here we use only a screwdriver or small pry bar to push the piston after worm gear is wound in.

Did a 5 year apprenticeship from 1970 to 75, with a Ford main dealer, left the garages in the mid 90s, for better paid job and now retired, never worked on EPB's as never came in until 2001, thank you for showing how to do this, never to old to learn, a great video

Undo electric wire, by poppin its safety clip. use 5mm hex and remove motor behind brake. then remove Caliper. if caliper and piston are too tight, use 5mm hex in the back of the piston winder, turn clock wise. once caliper is off then use c clamp on piston an tighten till resistance. turn the 5mm hex clockwise again till resistance, then turn c clamp more till the piston is retracted. do brake pads and chassie, once set an lubed, mount motor back on piston. then place caliper back. just did a set of backs, no codes no issues. its called a manual reset.

Excellent advice and step by step guide. My only suggestion here is that some EPB equipped cars first need to have the EPB 'parking on' turned off, before working on the rear brakes, as some EPB's automatically apply themselves as soon as you exit the vehicle/open the door.

Removing the two bolts holding the electric motor onto the caliper definitely works - tried and tested. Thanks for the upload 👍🏻
However, if you go down this route, make sure everything is completely clean before disassembly, as you don't want any contamination inside the assembly.
Jet wash inside the wheel well, use soft brushes around the caliper, small brushes for the tight areas, and plenty of brake cleaner, then you'll be able to remove the handbrake motor from the caliper.

      It did, absolutely.
Pity though when I got to the caliper carrier to do the discs, the bolts were seized. That was supposed to be the easy bit. Finally got the job done with a bolt extractor socket set and plenty of heat.

    Just a note on this.
I’ve just done a 2017 Nissan trail. I had to power up the motor and close the pads onto the disc before the handbrake would reset. The hand brake switch was flashing at me and wouldn’t work until I powered up the motor and closed the brake.

On some vehicles, it is possible to release the electronic parking brake without any tools whatsoever. I've been able to do this on a 2008 Citroen C4 Picasso and a 2005 Renault Espace. I don't know if it would work with calipers that have the actuator motor attached to them. Both the Citroen and Renault had a separate actuator (it was located under the front passenger seat on the Citroen).
