- ►Replacing the rear brake pads and rotors of your MQB chassis Volkswagen Tiguan is essentially the same process as the VW Arteon and Atlas. If your brake pads or rotors are visually worn past their usable life, if your pad wear sensor has tripped a warning message on the instrument cluster, or if the rear of your car is shaking under braking, it's time to replace these components.
Replacement of the MQB-based VW Tiguan brakes couldn't be more straightforward and is a job that nearly anyone can tackle in their garage or driveway at home. It requires minimal special tools, all of which are outlined in the intro of this video.
Follow along as Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er walks us through the step-by-step process of replacing the rear brake pads and rotors on a VW Tiguan SE R-Line.

I just did mine. The hardest part was the top 7mm hex bolt. I had to use a 7mm key as my tools didn't have the swivel and short extension. But all this helped. I bought an ANCEL VD500 OBD II Diagnostic Scanner for about $50 USD that made it easy. Your video helped a lot, could not have done it without your help.
Remove the electronic parking brake off the back of the caliper, take the 2 t27 screws out and use a 9mm on the little shaft inside (turn clockwise with your hand) and push the piston in with a clamp or caliper compression tool and put it back together!
You dont need an expensive scan tool to do this!
2021 vw tiguan se-rline, 3 different brake pads and rotors trying to find the best set for my 20" asanti black labels, worked for me every time with no problem and i think it might even be faster than the scan tool also
Can you do a video doing that? Pls
nailed it buddy! saved me a head ache forsure
Exactly this. On my 2020 Tiguan, it was a 5mm hex to remove the parking brake motor, then a 8mm hex socket to turn the shaft. Easy as pie.
Just finished my rear and front brakes on by 2019 Tiguan. This video was exactly what I needed for step by step details. Thank you!!!!
Absolutely brilliant my man. Thank you sincerely. Btw, your calming and stoic approach is admiral.
Update, I did the brake job by watching this video and it was much easier than I assumed. thank you again for the info mechanic!
Since the MQB chassis shares a lot of parts across the platform the rear rotors and calipers are the same on a Golf R 7.5 and Audi S3 8V (and submodels). This is nice because having to try and remove the rear caliper carrier not on a lift (i.e. jack stands) is near impossible due to the torque required.
Great video and talks for all the support the FCP Euro team provides!
Hey This was pretty cool, clear and understanding as you walked me thru this process, I have a 2022 Taos and will be doing my own work I think i will invest in a maxi checker now. Thanks
Great walk-through, thanks for the detailed instructions.
Thanks for this walkthrough. Ive never done any work on a car before and following along with this video helped me get my breaks done in ~20 minutes per side.
Im in southern ontario and i couldnt believe how dirty and rusty everything was once i got the thing disassembled. A wire wheel was essential for me. Fortunately i grabbed one on a whim.
I also used a $50 scanning tool to make the ebreak thingy go (if anyone is floored by the price of the fancy touch screen one in this video, there are affordable alternatives)
Thanks again! Saved me a buttload of cash and i learned a new skill!
Which scanner did you use? I want to pick one up that will accomplish this. Thanks.
@@forthesakeofreason This guy: ANCEL VD500 OBD II Diagnostic Scanner
Great, straight to the point video. I will be doing the brake job today. This will make the job so much easy.👌🏽👍
how can i reset the parking brake if i dont have the screen that he uses?
How can I replace it without the scanner
Thank you for your videos. I just finished the front and rear brakes on my 2018 Tiguan. Your videos were instrumental.
Wats size was the rotors?!
Excellent video! Thanks for the info.
this video is all you need! amazing.🥰
Thanks for teaching me how to Plessis this Machine spirit
This guy is good. this is the type of guy i will like to work on my car at the dealership. He knows everything he is doing.
Another question sorry do you need a battery charger when doing the erase thing with the scanner? I see one is needed when using VCDS which I have but if one is not needed with the mx808 then I will buy that instead of a charger
exc simple explanation
Finally someone made a video
Great video
Hi, Do you have to use the scanner for each side?
thanks
Hey can u do a video on Mercedes Benz w205 c300 engine piston failure
It seems to be a common and expensive issue around 55000miles
2018 when pressing caliper back in is the same or need to rotate?
Those caliper brackets are the best when removing rotors. Also you can disconnect the electrical connector on the caliper to get extra movement( just remember to reconnect it) I do that every time I work on these electronic parking brakes
Good idea with the connector!
Thank you
I have a question, do you have a similar video to change the 2022 Volkswagen Taos Rear Brakes? Or would this video be the same process?
how do you connect with a pushbutton ignition?
Would this proccess be applicable to the 2021 Arteon?
Great video. About to do the same job on a 2018 VW Tiguan. I assume the same rules apply and I don't actually need a brake wind back tool? I can just push the piston in? Thanks!
That would be correct, Joel!
Do l have to remove the caliper carrier bracket on a EPB with 272mm rotors?
Is it just possible to release the parking break and cut off the battery ?
Is there a function with OBDeleven for the electronic e-brake settings to do the service?
Hi Alan, more than likely they offer a service setting with their software.
Great Video! Very informative. My 2018 Tiguan Rotor hubs are rusting. What do you recommend I do to fix that? If I change the rotors, do you have any rotors that you recommend that wont rust?
Hi Dave, we offer Zinc coated rotors like the ones we installed in this video, the hubs are coated, so they don't oxidize like normal non coated units.
Are you able to change brake pads and rotors without the MaxiCheck MX 808? Is that the only way to release the electronic parking brake?
Hi Lee, there are other scanners out there you can use instead that will perform that action!
Where is the spring that holds the caliper to the mount and stops it from moving around?
Great step-by-step video! A question: If replacing pads on both rear wheels (2017 Tiguan), do both sides have electronic parking brake motors? If so, I assume the scan tool remains on until both sides are complete?
EPB actuator always comes in pair..once you send the command to open the EPB for any brake procedure, they both open same time.
Hi, does the vehicle have to be left “on” in the accessory mode while performing the brake job?
With my scan tool after you retract the park brake you can turn it off. ANCEL VD500 OBD II Diagnostic Scanner
Can I raise all 4 tires off the ground start the vehicle and release the parking to change the rear pads and rotors? I don’t have a scan tool to put it in service mode.
No the park brakes wont retract enough for that needs to be in a service mode. Get this tool ANCEL VD500 OBD II Diagnostic Scanner
Can I change the brake pads without the scan tool? I don´t know if I just deactivate the brakes manually, that could work?
I’m here looking for the same answer. I’m guessing the tool is necessary
So you do need a scanner to do the rear brakes? Is their another route you can take without using the scanner?
Hi Tony, a scanner of some sort will be needed to retract the electronic rear parking break!
For sure you need a compatible scan tool. It's due to the electronic parking brake - you've got to put it in service mode in order to do the job.
@@fcpeuro so, is the only way to retract the electronic parking break is using the scanner? what about if you turn the vehicle on and turn off/ release the parking break? It sounds as if being released but not sure if once you turn it off it will automatically activate the parking brake . ?
@@40danyhkI’m sure a lot of people are waiting to hear this answer. I don’t have a scanner either.
there is no rear zimmerman rotors for my 2017 vw passat ((((( only sloted
Need a video of how to change the brakes and rotors WITHOUT the maxicheck scan tool. That’s a little pricey.
Are the 2019 Jetta’s the same?
Austin, the idea should be generally the same. Once we get our hands on one, we will film a DIY!
@@fcpeuro I will love you forever, thanks lol
Wats size rotors are they ?! 2018 vw
Hi Anthony, the ones installed in this video are 300x12MM.
Sade said it best.... You Sir, are Mr., "Smooth Operator." lol
I just did my rear pads and rotors and found that the driver side outboard pad was down to the metal, while the other three rear pads still had plenty of material. After replacement, I felt the car fighting acceleration giving it the gas, and actively decelerating (instead of coasting) when I let off the gas but didn't apply the brake. It's as if that pad is always actuated.
Bad caliper? Bad guide pins? What gives?
Very common on all cars to either have seized slide pins from lack of grease, or sometimes a hung up caliper. Only way to check for sure is to pull off the suspected culprit, and check that the slide pins move freely, take the caliper and compress, whatever tool you used it should compress relatively easy if you feel like you have to use all your strength the caliper is most likely seized up. Based on only the outboard pad being excessively worn I would suspect the slide pins are the culprit, but again only one way to know gotta take it apart and inspect the system. Sorry it took 4 weeks for anyone to reply to you
@@tidus_on_crack6570 Hey man, it's free advice and I appreciate it. I took the slide pins out and greased them up but the issue is persisting. Next thing I'm gonna try is bleeding the brakes, I'm thinking maybe there's a fluid issue. Or I might just replace the caliper.
Anyway thanks for the advice!
@IanDeRanieri simply greasing the pins is not sufficient if they are rusted. As soon as the boot is torn, replace the boot and the slide pin. Sounds like a bad caliper to me but what do I know.
leave the guide pins. remove the caliper carrier bolts. slide caliper off carrier. wire brush lol not here in Buffalo, get the cookie out and clean up carrier and hub
How reliable are the tiguans?
We have 2018 VW Tiguan SE with 51,200 miles. Replaced water pump under recall, replaced spark plugs and brake pads/rotors. Everything runs excellent and got great gas mileage at 31.6 MPG on freeway with regular 87 octane. Very happy so far after 4 years owning it.
Engine oil pan gasket leak
First 10,000 miles
No problem since
61,000 needs brakes
Get a manual Jetta, manual cars are way more reliable
I have 100k miles on mine it's a 2021 se-rline blk no problems just normal maintenance
@@brentbird9503 Naa
I wish vw made better looking brakes.
If you don't have a scanner is they any other way to do the job?
Remove the emergency brake. You will see a spline, and use a 9mm socket to hand turn the spline. Make sure when you hand turn, the spline the piston is not going out, if it goes out, turn the opposite direction.
Two ways to do it :ua-cam.com/video/Ewpyci9KNO8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=O%27RileysAutos-MobileMechanic%26DPFCleaning
@@brentbrown9728 will they automatically set themselves clearance wise by using the switch?
@@othername1000 I didn't have an issue with it, so I assume so. E-brake still worked. Just make sure you are going the correct direction when you remove it.
@@brentbrown9728 Thank you.
My husband tried replacing my rear brakes and was not successful and was towed to dealership saying that the caliper was ruined and now they want to charge me over $3000 at dealer for new rear brake, caliper and rotor.
There's no way around using that scanner huh lol?
Great video
Thank you!
