Minnesota 80's kid here.... sooooooo, Prince spoiled here.... he was just always a part of life even before he became famous he was well known around the Twin Cities...... took that for granted and didn't fully appreciate it til several years down the road at how lucky we were and what a special gift we had all along right in our backyard....
As a long time guitarist, a few naysayers have criticized Prince's lead guitar work here, but the lead solo was absolutely fabulous and perhaps even more importantly, it fit the song....PERFECTLY. that's what it's really all about.
Dude, you are just beginning to scratch the surface with Prince. You really need to see some live shows. While the solo on this video is tremendous, I can tell you with all seriousness that he played solos night after night, for 35+ years in everything from clubs to arenas to stadiums that blow this one away. I had the privilege of seeing him 5 times in person. My favorite memory is of standing about 6 feet from him while he ripped solo after solo for close to 3 hours, and melted my face off. I would love to share some more Prince stuff with you if you can tell me how to send a message your way. By discovering Prince, youu have started a musical journey like no other. Enjoy.
Yes sir! This is phenomenal, but as a life long fan, we’ve been knowing! I always point the newly anointed to the live shows. I send them to check out check out his (it’s audio only) “Small Club - Just My Imagination” The guitar work makes me cry and that was even before he passed away. And guitar heads need to also check out “Joy In Repetition” from his live album “One Nite Alone It Ain’t Over” There’s so many more. And that’s just guitar.. we can list em for bass, for percussion, for keys….. I will never be over losing him too soon- for me anyway. I hope it was right on time for him.
Prince was a musical genius. He played multiple instruments, wrote amazing music, and was one of the greatest performers I've seen live. Like you have said before, watching someone that loves their craft of making music, is a special, special, gift.
Personally, my favourite version of this song was performed by Jeff Healey. He was amazing doing this song live on Letterman. But yes, Prince was amazing.
being from Minnesota, I've always known of Prince, and all the other names he went by. He was amazing and so talented! Not only was he a great performer, in every single way, but he wrote music for himself & others. He helped many musicians in their achievements in the business and rising up. He spoke out for those as well. Legend, or iconic, are not strong enough words to describe him. This world definitely lost a great one here.
@@thetruthhurtsu Wish I could have, but I lived down in N. C., but have been a fan since the first time I heard 'Controversy', and you're right, legend or iconic will never be strong enough words to describe Prince Rodgers Nelson.
Prince was the best anything/one to ever come out of MN, no thing/one else. Well, except Bob Dylan and Judy Garland, who both expressed distain for MN. Just a bunch of ignorant collectivist idealists. Nice to your face but... behind your back is another story.
I think I read somewhere that Steve Ferrone, who was the drummer that night, never saw that guitar landing. 😂 To me he surely is on the top 10, also cause he wasn't only a great soloist, but probably the funkiest rhythm guitarist.
It's hard to even comprehend this level of talent, really. To be legendary in so many facets and oh yeah, one of the greatest guitarists of all time too.
This was when George Harrison was inducted into the 2004 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Great tribute to George & this is one of his best songs that he wrote. Dhani Harrison (George's son) was playing guitar with all the other mega stars that night. Sadly we have lost Tom Petty & Prince now.
All I can say is if you think of anyone else as the coolest person who has ever lived, they wish they could be as cool as Prince (except maybe Freddie Mercury). We lost out on decades more of his brilliance. May he rest in peace.
First, I'm ECSTATIC that you're seeing and Truly appreciating GREATNESS! Second, I've seen this like a Billion times and today it REALLY hit me in my Heart and Soul. I'm Devastated they took MY MAN, THE PURPLE ONE, PRINCE ROGERS NELSON away from Us!!! Seriously! I'm feeling the Loss of him, right now. *tears* Still Love that his MUSICAL GENIUS, LEGENDARY STATUS and LEGACY lives on!!! #Prince4Ever
I saw Prince at a concert in 1981. This man was standing on top of the piano playing it with his feet in high heel boots and at the same time playing the guitar. He was just laughing and looking at the crowd while he was doing it. That whole stadium was in shock! He was incredible
I feel like someone should explain what happened here. Just listening to it is very emotional, but Prince was really playing for a different audience. That was for guitarists, for musicians, to understand, something that George Harrison would have understood and appreciated. The entire solo was there to illustrate the genius of Harrison as a songwriter, and Harrison and Clapton as guitarists. Prince showed a deep understanding of the A-minor/A-major split modal through the way he stayed on the A-C-G theme as the root moves around to create the progression, then his move to the Dorian IV (F#) is a brilliant call-out to Harrison's guitar language - later in the solo, you can see Prince smile at Tom Petty when he goes back to the natural F to rejoin the rest of the band. The little fill figures are a nod to Clapton's brilliance on the original White Album recording as well. But Prince still made it his with the trem-picking, and that absolutely brilliant octave section about 2/3 of the way through, just really slick and nasty. A lot of this was literally Prince proving to the legendary guitarists in the audience that he was one of them, that he understood the theory, the technique, and the Beatles, to be honest, as well as anyone who ever lived. It's easy to understand that this solo was heavily emotional, just after George's passing, but the tribute is so much deeper than just being a great guitar solo - Prince paid tribute to the craftsman Harrison, and that was really powerful to anyone who got it.
That's just one of the best performances of all time! Not many people would argue with you either! I loved watching Dhani Harrison's face as he enjoyed what Prince and the others did for his daddy's song! It was like going back to the 60's and seeing his young daddy with the Beatles! Thanks for this reaction!
Absolutely a kick ass performance. There is a back story that Prince was supposed to be lead guitar but one of the other performers insisted he do it. And so when it got to Prince, he adlibbed that solo which is why you see Tom Petty and a couple others smile when Prince flat gets it.

he was a true enigma, like at the end he doesn't bow he literally throws his guitar and walks off stage in seconds, never took pictures with fans, never allowed cameras into after partys, just left it all on the stage and disappeared keeping the mystery alive.

Met him 3 times in clubs in Paris after his 'aftershows" after his 2+ hoour main concerts. We were robbed. Thank you for keeping him alive for us.
Hahaha. I’ve loved this for so long. It makes me laugh watching reaction videos. Just remember this, the old folks have all those years more experiences that you never heard inside of us. There was a lot more to the world than the Beatles and Elvis. There is vocal perfection in a small woman called Barbra Streisand.. if all you think is Broadway… that’s like saying Prince doesn’t know how to play a guitar. Get past her biggest hits. That’s not where Barbra’s genius lies. EGOT, 10 Grammys, 2 Oscars, Tony, 14 Golden gloves, Presidential Medal of Freedom, Kennedy Honors award…. So many more. She did disco with Donna Summer..

Jeff Lynne was part of another group from the 70's called Electric Light Orchestra aka ELO. Check their music out.

Glad you took my advice and checked this out. It's one of those moments in time where time stands still and history is made. People come together to honor George and it all just comes together. Personally it was pretty emotional for me the first time i saw it. Seeing Dhani up ther playing his dad's song, looking just like his dad at that age, and me being a musician with a son who followed my footsteps to become one also it hit home pretty hard for me but nothing like the Taylor Hawkin's tribute when his son go up there to play drums with the Foo Fighters. That had me and my son in tears watching it.

Him as guitarist I also love Stevie Ray Vaughan you should check out Texas Flood or Pride and Joy! Yes Prince is a legend in every way! He wore heels and lace and women such as myself was like he is hot lol and he was until the day he passed.
I think one reason Prince didn’t get the accolades he deserved as a musician was in part because he was a bit of a diva (in the sense that he knew he was fabulous and expected everyone else to know it as well). You can see it here. Didn’t go to rehearsals, just went in with his red hat and red accents grabbing attention before he played a note, and blew them all away, had a guy following him around ready to catch him when he fell backwards, and did that “mic drop” at the end with his guitar. 11 awesome guitarists all with great reps and yeah, some big egos hard won by decades of amazing work, and he just rolled them all right there on stage. He knew he was all that, and it rubbed people the wrong way sometimes. Thing is, you get to act like you’re all that when you ARE all that.
That’s Jeff Lynne. Check him out as a member of Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and the Traveling Wilburys. Other members of the Traveling Wilburys were George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne.

I was there - planted in front of the tv when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show. From day one I was obsessed with George Harrison like a little teen girl gets. I later loved Prince, Tom Petty, and the rest of the guys playing here. I'm in awe of this performance and also I cry a little bit whenever I see it
I don’t remember if it was 50 or 100 list put out the top guitarist and Prince was rightfully pissed off. Prince wasn’t scheduled to be a part of this tribute. He asked to be part of it and of course they said yes. He was much more laid back and dropped this performance like a bomb😂 killed it 😂❤ The mic drop moment when he tossed his guitar was a big F you to Rolling Stone magazine 😊

Enjoy.
Syracuse 1985 is one of his best live shows.
Best comment, for Sebs Duran a new Prince enthusiast.
Yes sir! This is phenomenal, but as a life long fan, we’ve been knowing!
I always point the newly anointed to the live shows.
I send them to check out check out his (it’s audio only) “Small Club - Just My Imagination” The guitar work makes me cry and that was even before he passed away.
And guitar heads need to also check out “Joy In Repetition” from his live album “One Nite Alone It Ain’t Over”
There’s so many more.
Best version of this song. Prince was an absolute legend on that guitar. RIP.
Personally, my favourite version of this song was performed by Jeff Healey. He was amazing doing this song live on Letterman. But yes, Prince was amazing.
I'd say the three different beatles versions are the best.
@@DerekDerekDerekDerekDerekDerek I can definitely understand and I appreciate your opinion. Hope you have a blessed day though.
Prince hangs back then swipes the spotlight lol Also his superbowl performance in the rain was epic!
being from Minnesota, I've always known of Prince, and all the other names he went by.
Yes. Remember Jamie Starr?
I’m from Minneapolis, Minnesota myself. We’re you lucky enough to catch any of the shows at Paisley Park?
@@thetruthhurtsu Wish I could have, but I lived down in N. C., but have been a fan since the first time I heard 'Controversy', and you're right, legend or iconic will never be strong enough words to describe Prince Rodgers Nelson.
Prince was like our "hometown guy" who just happened to be a music genius.
Prince was the best anything/one to ever come out of MN, no thing/one else. Well, except Bob Dylan and Judy Garland, who both expressed distain for MN. Just a bunch of ignorant collectivist idealists. Nice to your face but... behind your back is another story.
Man really threw his guitar in the air and walked off stage what a guy
Whilst managing to leave his hat on his head....that's impossible in its own right
He gave the guitar back to God when he was done with it.
I think I read somewhere that Steve Ferrone, who was the drummer that night, never saw that guitar landing. 😂 To me he surely is on the top 10, also cause he wasn't only a great soloist, but probably the funkiest rhythm guitarist.
@@SirJoCocchi Yes without a doubt he is top ten but it’s a shame how many people underrate him. Man is a shredder
The part that floors me is that you can hear the guitar still humming while in the air!
It's hard to even comprehend this level of talent, really. To be legendary in so many facets and oh yeah, one of the greatest guitarists of all time too.
Prince. Michael Jackson. Whitney Houston. Bruno Mars( give him a few more years). Music Gods.
Prince was also inducted that night too.
The amount of talent on that stage could light up the galaxy.
It's easy to understand that this solo was heavily emotional, just after George's passing, but the tribute is so much deeper than just being a great guitar solo - Prince paid tribute to the craftsman Harrison, and that was really powerful to anyone who got it.
probably one of the greatest line ups ever
I was so thrilled when this happened and Dhani Harrison was in the group. What a group of musicians.
Told you!!! Prince was a musical genius!!! Miss him so much! Great reaction!!!
PRINCE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
That's just one of the best performances of all time! Not many people would argue with you either! I loved watching Dhani Harrison's face as he enjoyed what Prince and the others did for his daddy's song! It was like going back to the 60's and seeing his young daddy with the Beatles! Thanks for this reaction!
I told you would love this. Prince is a legend. May he R.I.P.
Prince...💜 never anyone else like him and never will be.
I still don´t get over how phenomenal Prince was as a guitarist ...
Prince is a BADASS on the BASS!
We knew that early on - but especially in his song "Bambi."
Right. If I had to pick a favorite instrument of Prince it’s absolutely the bass
Absolutely a kick ass performance. There is a back story that Prince was supposed to be lead guitar but one of the other performers insisted he do it. And so when it got to Prince, he adlibbed that solo which is why you see Tom Petty and a couple others smile when Prince flat gets it.
That was such an amazing moment. I always knew Prince was a great musician, but while I was watching that I realized I had no idea.
#Prince was inducted into the RnR Hall Of Fame the FIRST year he was able to be. SOME greats arent honored for decades after. #Prince REALLY is a Musicians Musician and he is a #GenreOfHisOwn #PrinceIsAGenre of music. #Prince4Ever
I saw this the night it happened and was BLOWN AWAY. Prince was the MAN, period.
he was a true enigma, like at the end he doesn't bow he literally throws his guitar and walks off stage in seconds, never took pictures with fans, never allowed cameras into after partys, just left it all on the stage and disappeared keeping the mystery alive.
I saw it live. It never gets old. The performance was that powerful. That honoring. That respectful. That creative. That personal.
Wow❤
In my opinion Prince is and always will be the greatest musical artist in history.
He is an entertainer but so much more 💗
One of my favorite songs and best performances. Everyone rocked, but Prince crushed it.
Prince montreux 2009 concert. Classic rock mixed with jazz via Prince sound. Prince covers stratus(cob ham cover), Spanish castle magic (Hendrix), prince does an expanded slow down version of his own little red corvette with a guitar centered version.
Prince’s cover of Radiohead “creep.” Where Prince changed some of the lyrics and brought 2 killer solos at Coachella.
The guy was among the best in everything he did: singing, playing instruments, writing songs, dancing, you name it! One of a kind. R.I.P. 😢
What I've heard about this performance is shortly before this rolling stone magazine had come out with the top 100 guitarists of all time and prince wasn't on it, so he came out and did this😂
Totally made fools of Rolling Stone, yup. They came out with an "updated" list after that saying that there had been a mistake in the first list.
They still made a mistake not putting him #1 or at least #2 behind Hendrix. He proved his point though 💜
Most people don't realize that prince played all the instruments on some of his albums. He was a true musician and shreds on the guitar
Watched this live on TV so long ago.
Still love it. Respect to others, but prince KILLED it !!!!!🎵
I watch this reaction about onnce a month because I love your take on it. So happy you found Prince. A dude I've seen maybe 30 times in 4 countries since 1986. Met him 3 times in clubs in Paris after his 'aftershows" after his 2+ hoour main concerts. We were robbed. Thank you for keeping him alive for us.
Thx for acknowledging the fact the he was having fun. Not calling him a ham or saying he was grandstanding
And either way, George's son Dhani sure didn't seem to mind Prince doing his thing--he was grinning a mile wide! 😊
Prince, the artist, the man, the legend. A guitar God.
This is EPIC !!!!! And we’re talking about the very elite performing this.
💜Omg loved seeing Prince put a big smile on your face😂😂😂😂😂I very much appreciate hearing from an knowledgeable guitar player so 👍THANKS! I haven't seen your reaction to Prince's Superbowl performance but this reaction makes me look forward to your other video! Awesome!
Prince’s solo was supposed to be half as long. You can see him looking back at Petty, and petty nods, keep going legend. .. and so he does
Prince could make his guitar weep, sing, and talk 🎸🥰
YES! This! He is a perfectionist and humble! He could play so many many instruments! The keys! Loved this man!
first singer was Tom Petty. Second singer with the fro is Jeff Lynn (ELO)
That stage is one big rabbit hole of musical talent. The two singing are Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The two of them were part of a Supergroup with George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan called The Traveling Wilburys. Jeff Lynne was part of another group from the 70's called Electric Light Orchestra aka ELO. Check their music out.
I've been a Prince-fan since I was 10, and I've just watched your Prince-vids back to back. It gives me so much joy seeing you truly(!) enjoy his mastery, great reactions!
Prince. The best ever. Super Bowl performance the best ever. Great reaction!
Legend has it that to this day, Prince's guitar is still in orbit, and still smoking a cigarette after Prince sexed it like a madman! 🤣
Tom Petty - lead vocals, guitar
Jeff Lynne - co-lead vocals, guitar
Steve Winwood - organ
Dhani Harrison - guitar, backing vocals
Jeff Young - piano
Marc Mann (ELO, Oingo Boingo) - lead guitar
Scott Thurston (The Motels, The Heartbreakers) - bass
Steve Ferrone (AWB, Duran Duran, The Heartbreakers) - drums
Jim Capaldi (Traffic) - persussion, tambourine
Prince - soul, swagger, heat, sexiness
George Harrison - spiritual guidance
Eric Clapton - blues inspiration
Jimi Hendrix - cosmic influence
I watched it live and my mouth was open and I have loved Prince since I first saw him! I was so crushed when he passed especially the way he did. That solo was one of the best!
I love, love, love this performance, so much incredible talent brought together, and Prince, of course, has epic guitar playing.
The guy in the back is Dhani Harrison, loving what Prince is doing...
This was amazing
Some of the best and the best ever PRINCE
HIS FIRST ALBUN
HE PLAYED ALL THE INSTRUMENTS
Super ball 🏈 performance
The best ever been till this day
Purple rain performed in the rain at half time
Everytime I hear that solo and watch him it makes me gently weep because we will never get a new performance or a new album from Prince. There was never anyone like him before and there will never be anyone like him after. The world lost the day Prince died.
I was there - planted in front of the tv when the Beatles played on the Ed Sullivan show. From day one I was obsessed with George Harrison like a little teen girl gets. I later loved Prince, Tom Petty, and the rest of the guys playing here. I'm in awe of this performance and also I cry a little bit whenever I see it
My understanding was that Prince was responding to a few critics with this performance and boy did he make them eat their words!
@@kimzwolinski9919 Spot on!
Yes, he did everything for himself and didn't give a fuck about anyone else, even in situations that weren't about him
@@veggigoddess well, he was inducted the night as well so it also was about him...
Best guitar solo I've ever heard is Jeff Healey playing As The Years Go Passing By live. On the same genius level with Prince, Jimi, and SRV.
That's Steve Winwood there at the first playing lead. Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne (ELO) singing.
I watched it live and went into work the next day and my co-worker asked me if I had HBO and did I see Prince? He said, “Now do you see what a genius this man is?”
One word GUITARGASM 😢😢😢❤️❤️❤️
Wonderful sharing man. I loved you commentary, thoughts, and just thank you for sharing. Glad you found this performance. We will all one day perish, but the songs remain.
Yay! You did it!.. ICONIC performance with talents that are no longer with us other than recorded performances. Thank You 😀
Watched this live when it aired, definitely do the Super Bowl performance next. Make sure you watch the entire performance not just the Purple Rain part.
Love your reaction to the Legend, the man, the one nd only Prince🙌🎵🎸👌💜🙏
I was never a big fan, but I give all respect possible to Prince. Musically, there are VERY few people in the world who can match up.
Thank you so much for this. I am a Prince fan, but never knew he sounded like that. Totally awesome.
A little trivia for ya: Billy Preston was in the far back, playing keyboards.
ya boy is finally starting to get cred based on a performance from 20yrs ago. look at all of the "all of a sudden" reaction videos to this performance. Prince completely SLAYED.
Yeah Prince can do anyting don't believe me search UA-cam for Prince bass solo . Back note on that video though Prince was asked to sit in on that song and asked to come to rehearsal where he said don't worry about it I got this and never went to. Other members of the set were slightly worried and not knowing what to expect. But were all in complete awe of what his performance did. Keep up the good work sir
