- Ben Renick was a popular reptile purveyor, known across the country. However, when he was discovered in his facility, what was thought to be an animal accident was revealed to be something else. The investigation would go on for years, until a tipster revealed the entire plot.

Sixteen years for murder and probably out after ten years. Taking an innocent life obviously not as serious. My daughter was a drug addict and got fifteen years for doing drugs, not selling nor making. With no parole. How much more screwed up is our justice system??? How in the world was Lyin’ Lynlee found guilty of SECOND degree murder when she planned it all along?! A family friend of mine got 25 years for robbing a drug dealer for weed when he was 18, with no prior record. Tirteen years for a planned out murder alone is an absolute injustice for poor Ben.

I found it interesting that her and her lawyer were all smiles after the sentencing. If I was innocent, I would be pissed about even one day. They were basically high-five, only 16 years. She definitely pulled the trigger.

Yep if she was truly "innocent" she wouldn't be mouthing "thank you" for the 16 year sentence! And happy about it! Because 16 years for being innocent would be a major injustice and she would be crying all kinds and not happy tears like she had here! But if you "ended" someone and only got 16 years! Then yeah, that's something worthy of being happy about and mouthing "Thank you" repeatedly!!! And being all smiles proves she did it! She's horrible and I really hope she somehow doesn't get out! That guy seemed like a really great guy! Super nice and not a bad bone in his body. He didn't deserve this! That's for sure. I can't believe she pretty much got away with it. That's so horrible! Ben had a gentle face and really did seem like a good guy. 16 years for his mindless death is disgusting. And the other woman who was completely complicit just walked away. She knew Ben was going to be murdered, she could have stopped it at any point.

Obviously jury’s are not fit to decide sentencing once they’ve found the person guilty! They have no qualifications or knowledge of the law or they wouldn’t have given this cold blooded,soulless woman what will be only 11 years!

My 13 year old nephew, is severely Autistic, my parents take care of him and they noticed that he perked up anytime the topic of snakes came up. It was probably one of the only topics that truly held his attention. So my parents decided to buy him a snake, that snake is a blessing to my nephew. He is more open and is eager to tell anyone who will listen about his snake. He is not normally that engaged and outgoing but that snake is his connection to the world.

I happen to adore snakes...we have a nest of garter snakes on our property. One is a MAMMOTH mother snake, there are numerous males, and now there are a load of tiny child snakes which were as small as pencils, but these little squirts have grown very quickly.
I have a friend whose son has a corn snake. She began tiny but is now @3+' long, and gentle as can be

This story really is sad. So basically the jury determined that Ben's life meant less than a robbery offense. That's ridiculous. Hopefully Karma will get her in jail.

Renick's Reptiles was straight legend in the community. He did amazing things in a short amount of time. Ben is very much missed. It's awful that the people who murdered him got such light sentences, I hope karma takes care of them.

This is an old video/comment, but I am curious if the cage set up he had was considered humane. Seems like sensory deprivation chamber to me. I'm used to seeing people with elaborate habitats set up for pet snakes on UA-cam but maybe it's just a breeder vs pet owner distinction. 🤷♀️ Genuinely curious
I'm a snake keeper/breeder, he was a great person, great breeder, great for the community, such an awful scenario, can't believe someone you love and share your love with could do something like that. He was someone known throughout the community for great care and love for his animals, as well as being a successful leader in the industry.

As someone who works with reptiles professionally and had meet Ben a few times thank you for the video. He was an amazing guy and loved his snakes.

It is amazing how little prosecution has slowly gained guilty verdicts in capital crimes without any actual evidence whatsoever.
It seems that entirely circumstantial evidence and even 1 or 2 pieces of circumstantial evidence will end in a guilty verdict.
This is very scary, once upon a time "Reasonable doubt" actually meant that because we did not want to condemn innocent people. The more of these true crime videos I watch over the years the less and less physical evidence is presented until now it is not present whatsoever and only a couple circumstantial pieces, streached st that, is able to convict someone.
We should be worried at this disturbing trend. Especially when a he said she said case is simply expected to convict. Holy shit this is fcked people.

Ben was a great snake breeder and was credited with creating several never seen before morphs. I was lucky to meet him at a couple of snake shows and he came across as a really great guy.
What exactly is morphs? Is it lime two different snakes breeding for a rare breed? Personally I am terrified of snakes but I do know that they are just as scared of us humans. He seemed to be an asset to the reptile community. That's too bad.

Did you check out her pathetic Dateline interview after she was convicted?? According to her, everyone was out to get her. All 4 people who had knowledge &/or participated in the murder ALL lied. Everyone lied, including her, but NOW she was telling the truth. She ran when the shots rang out & didn’t help her husband because she was scared. So she ran to the car WITH the supposed murderer. Instead of away from him & didn’t tell police when she was safe because she was in shock every time they interviewed her. Duh!!!

p.s. The loss of these innocent lives, while the people poisoned by greed live on, is always distressing to me. But this case was really upsetting. Just such a nice guy, so good at what he did.

Thanks for covering this story! I knew Ben and his wife personally through the reptile business and was completely shocked when Ben was murdered. No one suspected his wife at all and the reptile community raised a lot of money for her and their child. Ben was a great guy and will always be remembered as one of the best snake breeders out there!

Ok so if a college classmate lost his wife in a horrible accident, would you donate even if you were just acquaintances and other people your close to were close to this person. Absolutely no one including the people CLOSEST to them knew that she called the insurance policy until that evidence became public which was well quite a while later. The whole point of her scheme was that NO ONE knew anything about any of it.

I watched the entire trial too and I have been upset ever since. She sold Ben's family land after she murdered him, kicked out his brother out of his childhood home and cut ties with Ben's family entirely, so much so they were not allowed to see the kids. She will serve a max of 11 years out of her 16 year sentence. Complete joke...Also she has a very punchable face.

I knew Ben and Lynlee, and I'm glad you did this one. Ben was a golden man, unselfish and giving. Why so often do the weak and corrupt glom onto the exceptionally good spirited ones? BTW, a few of Ben's snakes were worth upward of 50K. Ben was just selling the ball pythons. The other species, he was keeping with huge plans for the future. My cousin killed a man with his bare hands, another high profile colleague, it was supposed to be roughhousing and giving him a scare but the guy’s lights went out and never came back. As soon as he realized it, my cousin began rendering medical aid and they took him to the hospital and he admitted what he did. I don’t want to say the specifics because it was national news (very weird to hear your cousin’s name on nightly news) and it’s awkward, but yeah he got manslaughter and 10 years in federal prison. Prior to the trial I had texted him about a hobby we share and i wanted to be like “....So uh.... I guess you killed a guy, huh?” but I mean obviously you don’t say something like that so I didn’t.
But yea it’s really weird because we grew up playing as kids together and now he’s a convicted killer and gone for the next 8 years.

The bias in our justice system is so blatant its absurd. The guy who was hired and (probably) didn't even go through with it has to make a deal to get LIFE with the POSSIBILITY of parole and the woman who orchestrated the entire thing and (probably) pulled the trigger herself in the end, lies through her teeth throughout the entire process, gets 16 years. Disgusting.
There is tons of female privilege in our justice system. And the discrimination against men doesn't stop at murder trials. We see it a lot in divorce cases where the women overwhelmingly are given custody of the child. But of course you never see any of these "equality" and "anti-discrimination" organizations speak up for men, which is why all those organizations are a joke and they, themselves, are sexist.

The most bizarre thing is how justice is administered with such differences from one case to another.

I'd like to think he had a sudden attack of decency, or at least common sense after being led by his southern anatomy for months. But he'll get life with the *possibility* of parole. She got 16 years, after having "masterminded" the whole plot, allegedly pulling the trigger multiple times, n imo almost certainly hinted at a future relationship (to put it politely). *16 years* against the possible 60 years she robbed him of.

That’s so sad that she could set up the murder of her husband and only get 16 years. Even if she didn’t pull the trigger, she was still as guilty as if she did, but I believe she might have. Who knows? The jury should feel guilty and think about it for the rest of their lives.

What did he steal?! My cousin was playing a rough prank on a coworker and took it too far and accidentally killed him, he tried to revive him and took him to the hospital and immediately admitted it, he’s serving 10 years for manslaughter. Really weird and awkward for the rest of us honestly.

I had such a hellish marriage as this. She was "stepping out" and convincing various paramours that I was abusive (never laid a finger on her). I was lucky to escape alive. Had guns drawn on me, people stalking me at my house, running me off of the road etc. The person I was married to had tremendous "demons" from childhood (she grew up in an extremely abusive home). Thankfully, she got remarried (a few times) and finally left me alone. I don't hold grudges against her...but I'd like to dig up her Dad and punch him in the face...
All that being said, I must wonder what deep-seated horrors lie in Linley's past. God be with her poor husband...
She wasn't that bad but I had an ex that pulled similar mess.....until I got fed up with it and called her on her lies in front of her new guy(she usually kept them from actually talking to me). Luckily she had gone so far that it was obvious even to him that she was lieing.(she had neglected to tell him I had a daughter and a bunch of other stuff. Enough to make him question her). After that she appears to at least toned things down enough I didn't hear about it.

@@Syclone0044 red flags. If all her exes, family, etc are according to her "bad people". If she somehow always seems to have been the victim. If she has always seemed to need someone to rescue her. If you ever get the feeling something feels off with her stories, even if you can't put your finger on what. All of those are red flags. I was blind sided by my ex but in hindsight those were the warning signs I've found.
STAY AWAY FROM CAREER VICTIMS.

As someone who grew up in the snake breeding community, I've actually met and bought a python off Ben. Seemed super nice. Beautiful snakes. Really sad to hear about. He really was an impressive breeder and his snakes had beautiful patterns and vibrant colors that are not always easy to get. And those snakes really are worth more money than you may realize, especially if they were also heterozygous for certain color phases. I really hope someone got in to take care of them. So sad for everyone involved

At snake shows they'll even write what they are heterozygous for on the container as it will increase the sale price. Snake shows are the lifeblood of that industry and actually quite fun to attend. It's like an extremely clean and well put together fleamarket for reptiles. My father specialized in color phases of cornsnakes and het refers to the probability that that snake will have a litter that is a specific color phase that is different from her own. For example, we had several corn snakes that we okatee, or the basic orange brown color you would see on typical corn snakes. But several of them were het for other color phases like anerytheristic, blizzard, snow, hypomelanistic, Creamsicle, candycane, etc. So the next generation of that snake would be split between okatee and whatever it was het for, starting a new line of color phase. I'm a big anerytheristic fan myself. But with pythons like he breeds, piebald was all the rage for a long time. So expensive 10 years ago, but they've dropped in price a little as they've become more common. They're beautiful tho, look one up if you've never seen one

And at this point in our lives it's more of a hobby than a business for us now that my sisters and I are all grown and out of the house. But we had over 100 150 at one point. Mike I know that doing something like this (running a channel on a schedule, consistent uploading, and doing such a good job as you do) can really take a toll on someone, and sometimes you probably don’t want to even continue to upload; but I’m just here to say that I understand even from A perspective of someone who doesn’t even make UA-cam videos, I can still see that it’s not an automatic thing for you to just wake up and keep doing this, I really appreciate the effort that you put into this.
