The Harrowing AJ Hadsell Case

  • Anjelica "AJ" Hadsell was living in Norfolk, VA before heading off for college. However, when she came home one spring break, she somehow vanished from said home. Her family, devastated, began the search. Her step father became convinced a neighbour had something to do with it. He would take drastic steps, and only turn the spotlight on himself.

Frustrating hearing him say " my daughter, my daughter, my daughter, my family blah fuckin blah." Stop calling her your daughter, she's your victim and you're only her mothers biggest mistake she'll regret for the rest of her life.

I don't understand how a mother can knowingly allow a rapist around their child. How can you marry a rapist and not be bothered by it? She was so concerned about his drug use, but what what about the fact that he had assaulted and raped someone? She wasn't concerned about him being around her children? It just blows my mind.

@@JoJo-dv1rz I mean obviously her mother is going to feel guilty for the rest of her life, I just don't particularly like that as the takeaway. We don't know what the circumstances of his previous crimes were, what the mother knew and at what point, and how Wesley presented himself/behaved prior to what he did to AJ. It's one thing if you know someone did terrible things before you meet them, and another when you form a relationship with them and learn about their past slowly over time after growing to trust them. What if you already had children with someone, they had only ever shown you the side of them that is kind and loving, and then later you found out that they had done something awful before you met? You would certainly react differently, and give them more consideration than if they were a stranger at that point. And what could you actually do at that point if you are pregnant with their child, or have already had their children? You can't just take the kids and leave, you have to go through the court system. Your trust is shattered, but you still have to deal with the reality of your shared living situation and possibly making it more dangerous by trying to cut them off immediately. Maybe she didn't realize exactly how dangerous he was, or when she did it was too late to escape without enraging him. Maybe that was part of why she was in the process of separating her family from him.
I just don't think it's anyone's place to add additional guilt onto what I'm sure she already overwhelmingly feels. Wesley is the one who made the choice to do this, and I don't realistically think anyone else should be expected to predict what he chose to do before he did it, without the benefit of hindsight... which everyone has now.

Not all people who have a domestic violence charge are a threat. My wife at the time got arrested and put in jail for domestic violence because she and I were in a yelling match and she angrily threw her own cell phone on the ground out of frustration. They arrested her for domestic violence because they said they witnessed a destruction of property during an argument and that met the criteria. Keep in mind she didn't touch me and I didn't touch her. A lot of people get a trumped up domestic charge just because the cops don't want to go back out again that night.
I mean find out the reason why someone has a domestic violence charge is all I'm saying.

The mother seems rather cold. I am not surprised. Just watch her being cold and belittling the whole situation when being interviewed... It looks like Angelica was a poor scapegoated child and she was abused by her step-father for a long time. I have a feeling that her mother knew about it, or knew something, but never cared. Just like my mother. The same behavior, the same neglect. (I was not abused sexually but psychologically by my father and my mother did not want to discuss it or help me. It looked like she actually liked it - I was her scapegoat - child, she loved to see me suffer. Anjelica´s mother, her words and behaviors resembles my mother so much. Well, I kicked my mother out from my life at 39 finally, when she tried to ruin my relationship with my husband. Why? Jealousy... :-( I am not kidding. I realized that when I started therapy. PS: My mother dated a guy, who was verbally abusive towards me. She liked it...

Don't blame her mother for what this guy did to her daughter. Obviously he is accustomed to constantly lying and probably manipulated her in general. It's also very possible he never told the mother about his past rape charges and that she didn't know. It's also very possible he lied and explained it away somehow, just like you see him attempting to do when he tries to explain away AJ's murder as him being framed.
It's so easy for some random UA-cam video watcher to blame the mother's choices and say "How could she have let this guy into their lives?” when you have a neat little packaged story layed out for you so you can say what she should have or shouldn't have done because here and now you have perfect hindsight, but that's not how life actually works.

It's a damn shame that he couldn't handle being kicked out and a divorce on the horizon, because that's what a real man would've been able to handle. This is my theory: since Jennifer was taking something away from him -- a nice, clean home with home cooked meals to living in a hotel room with none of those amenities, so he decided to take something away from Jennifer, and that was AJ. Most mental health stuff is described by various attributes. For example, symptoms of depression can include changes in sleep, appetite, motivation, self-esteem, concentration, etc. Not every depressed person will experience each potential symptom of depression and some people even feel opposite effects. For example, one of my friends is a depressive insomniac and I am a depressive oversleeper.
The important thing for diagnosis is that you experience a collection of symptoms with enough severity to impact your quality of life.
So while many psychopaths will have histories of dv, drug abuse, sa, animal abuse, arson, etc, they won't exhibit ALL of those behaviors.

A lot of people who write, write about depressing things. That's common for journaling or art. It doesn't mean the person is suicidal. I hate when investigators take it as such. If I were to go missing and they were to read my poems, I'd probably be marked as suicidal. Just don't think it's right. Unless the writing is a suicidal note or something blatant like that.

Norfolk, Tidewater area, VA Beach are trashy, awful areas in Virginia. I lived in Northern Virginia off and on for 20-years. Virginia is an AWFUL state.

The mother, where did lose her mind? She introduced a stepfather into her kids life, who had serious criminal record, and was a part of A. Brotherhood. Did she think he was good candidate for a family man? I'm all for parents having their private lifes but the mother put herself, and her family, in danger but it was AJ who has payed for her mother stupidity.

She could have just hooked up with him, instead of making him father of her children. I can't get over it. Such a young life ended so horribly from a person that was expected to escalate.
