My man, you Sir are doing God's work! Thank you for sharing this. Had no clue how to EQ my audio, now I know exactly what adjusting each frequency range actually means and what effect that has on the audio.
I've been producing a podcast for this sports/music/politics blog that I started with my friends and have been dying to find engineering guidance this concise and clear. From one producer to another, thank you for being such a huge help. This is a criminally underrated channel.
Oh my gooood huge difference. Cheers Ryan and thank you for the tutorial. My next venture is to snag an RE-20, but this does so much for my current microphone.
Best video I've seen for the information and the way it's communicated. As a writer of scripted, fictional content, I have to quickly learn how to do this--my producer completely flaked out--when I used to concentrate on writing the scripts and doing some voicing. It was a tremendous gut punch when I realized my pod sounded horrible and that I would have to learn how to do what an award winning producer was doing for me. But you made this easy--using your EQ curve with a few small adjustments--and it really sounds great. Thank pal!
Wow 😮 just found this channel and it’s already a gold mine 👌🏽 thanks so much man. Most of my questions were answered in the video/comment section. You earned a subscriber and can’t wait to see what you come out with next
Just wanted to say thanks for explaining this so clearly. I was going way overboard with my FX chains, so I trimmed it right back and started again using your video as a guide and I think largely the end result was much the same, but it sounds much cleaner now, really appreciate it!
This is so well explained. Also, congrats on the award! I'm in SW Ontario too and I run a podcast as well, so I always love seeing another Canuck achieving out there!!
I realized while watching that what I love in a voice with a lot of body is a combination of that 100ish hz boost, and how that cut at about 250 hz separates the rest of the vocal from the chesty part. Going to be applying this in my voice over, might get that mic too! Thanks man.
Yep, that's the secret. Cutting out that mid really opens it up and sounds great. I try not to be too shy when cutting out the mids. Some mics really need it more than others...
One of the best yet on setting up audio for your podcast. This has been a huge help especially during my initial set up of my own podcast. judos my friend and thanks again.....Manny
Thank you so much! I just got a condenser mic, and for some reason sometimes my voice sounded unintelligible. I had tried every eq configuration I could, and nothing worked, until I used your tips. Now it sounds awesome. Thank you man!
You just made me really like the sound of the Re20. I always liked the sound of the sm7b but I never heard someone sound that nice using a Re20 and the people you got on the podcast sounds great using it
Hey Sarah, thanks! :) I don't know of any free NR plugins, I use iZotope's RX Elements, which has great plugins. If you're looking for something that is free, but not a plugin, you could go with Audacity. It has a nice Noise Reduction effect. You could record or import your raw audio file, apply the effect and export it as a WAV. I've done that for years and can't complain :) Hope that helps!
thanks for the help. i was putting too many plugins in my mix and it was coming out digitized after bouncing out of logic. your video helped me streamline my plug in stack. domo domo.
Thank you for this video! It was a great guide and reference for me to establish my own process, and that EQ secret sauce was especially helpful and worked absolute wonders on the male vocal I was working with.
Great tip on re-EQing after compression before applying the Limiter! Even though we use ECNC (EQ, Normalization, Compression, Noise Reduction) in post, for our remote podcasts we STILL occasionally get this mysterious (and annoying) residual "rattling" or "egg shaker" background sound from our guests that does not show up on the sound file but is present. What causes this, and how can we eliminate it in post (short of demanding our guests record in a dead room)?
Sorry but I’m not sure what that is... It could be in the original recording but just very quietly, then when you process your audio, you hear the subtleties more. Maybe something to do with the audio being recorded from over the internet? Just some weird artifacts..?
Great video, fully agree with the Low pass filter for getting rid of unnecessary data and am curious as to whether or not you do the same at the other end. Looking at your analyzer a high pass filter cut off at 17.5k - 18k would probably help further eliminate noise and ess.
Hi Ryan, thanks for those awesome tips!!! I just started producing a video podcast so I want to edit the audio within premiere pro. I created this order. Can you PLEASEEEE let me know if it's correct or what's the right order?. I also have Audition so if there's any other step that's better like noise reduction process with a print instead of Denoise, I can do it. (P.S: I'm using a Lav mic now, but will upgrade to a dynamic mic soon. Shooting in my non-sound treated living room) 1 --> Gain peak at -12 to -6 2 --> DeNoise 3 --> DeReverb 4 --> Dynamics Compressor (+ engage Limiter) 5 --> DeEsser 6 -->Parametric Equalizer 7 --> Hard Limiter Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Overall great video, but there’s one part I question. @6:50 you’re clipping but you say that’s ok because you have the limiter on the master catching it. I don’t think this is the best advice because you’re still distorting it before it hits the limiter. The limiter will smooth that out, but wouldn’t it be better to turn the output of your compressor or the channel gain down enough so that it doesn’t clip at all, and then adjust the threshold of the limiter by the same amount? My understanding of gain staging is that you should ALWAYS avoid clipping everywhere (between plugins, on the channels, etc)
Yes, I think you’re right. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We always have to be open to improving and letting people call us out when there’s room to develop. That’s why I love UA-cam. As a community, we can all share and get better together. 👊🏻
@@itsryanfreeman hey no problem! I wasn't even sure I was correct, so I just wanted to see what your take on it was. Kudos for listening and considering my take. This was a quality, informative video and that one little bit being "wrong" doesn't change that. Nice work!
Hi Ryan! Your videos have been really helpful. And I've bought your bundle preset to help me with my podcast since I have little to no idea of what I'm doing. The recordings now sound much better but I do have a few questions (I use garageband) I'm hoping you can answer on here: - Some of my recordings were done with a pretty loud background noise (like air con/traffic in NYC)...how can I get rid of it even more? I realise it won't fully disappear - My seem to have recorded the voices too loud from the get go. How exactly do I adjust the volume so it doesn't blow up for the listener? - When mastering, the audio levels of jingle/voice doesn't seem to work that well and I still need to adjust volumes... - We only used 1 mic in recording and some are interview with male and female on one track. Do you then suggest using the preset for the main voice? e.g. the male voice if he is mainly the one talking Thanks so so much!
Huge question. if you get the UAD apollo twin x and you have Luna do you need logic pro x, if not can you use logic pro x over luna, and if yes how would you get to use the plugins provided by UAD? Another question, if you use editing software like FCPX or DaVinci 17, they both can edit audio. Would you edit audio in those programs or in Luna/LPX then bring it over to your editing software like FCPX/DaVinci 17? Also for someone like me who wants professional audio but is not necessarily doing professional work; just stuff like unboxings, gaming voice-overs, creating an online course where my voice would be in it, and other audio stuff but I just want the best quality as possible.
I really liked this video. Thanx...also, what kind of mic cable are you using? Is it is wrapped and tied off? If my cable were pulled and bent like that it would distort. Also does that method shorten the life of the cable?
Thank you bro, from my side I can give back a suggestion to you that comes to mind - put an SPL filter on your camera, it will remove the reflections of the monitor from your glasses - if you have a smartphone, you can also find such a filter for smarphones :) (e.g moment lenses and filters). The mic is amazing, I'm using Oktava mk-319 but yours does not change the tone of the voice based on the distance from the mic, wow - I was recording some raps multiple times and I need to nail it at one moment because otherwise they don't fit due to always recording from a slightly different distance :) Once I am making money from what I'm doing I might invest in that mic!
You sir, are a wizard. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. It's refreshing to watch someone who is skilled pull back the curtain. Excellent instruction. You definitely deserve that WEBBY! Keep it up.
Do you use the plugins on the chain in your UAD console or do you apply them in logic and just go for a clean signal through your UAD, when recording your own vocals? GREAT video too this was incredibly insightful. Just bought your bundle too! Super excited to get our vocals dialed in.
@@itsryanfreeman for sure! and congrats on the award, that's huge! Not sure how much info you have on getting a podcast out to a wider audience, but I'd love to see that video too :D
This is an amazing tutorial...I'm just starting out and was wondering about vocals and sound. You explained it in a way that makes sense and wasn't overwhelming. I've added it to my private podcast tutorial playlist. Thank you for doing this video, Ryan.
Im on pro tools... whats a good compressor and EQ, I think thats what I need. I got a pair of the shure sm7b's and they're great but I still need that umph, that boosted sound.
Hey ryan, found out your video and was so amaze with your sounds proccesings. I want to ask how do you set the gain on your mic? Is it by default like at 12 o'clock? Or maybe do you have another opinion. Thanks
Hey, thanks. My mic doesn’t have a gain knob. It’s plugged into my audio interface , which is where I adjust the gain/input level. You can find all the gear I use here: www.itsryanfreeman.com/pages/my-gear-list
Ryan! Thank you so much, I understood this tutorial perfectly fine and was able to implement the same curve on Audition and now my microphones sound SOOO much better. If you did an entire tutorial series on how to get solid audio, I'd watch the absolute hell out of it. the only bit I had a bit of difficulty with was the compression. What exactly does it do?
Thanks for the feedback! Happy to have helped you. I recently started this channel, but I'll be uploaded at least once a week with audio / music production tips and filmmaking tips... So stay tuned. I try to create content with topics that necessarily haven't been made before or of my own process / perspective. There's already a bunch of great content online about recording and mixing fundamentals. So for compression, this video should help you: ua-cam.com/video/91qs3fux5HY/v-deo.html
thanks man! I checked out his series. Definitely some really great information. Congrats on the award! I already subscribed, looking forward to more from you. Cheers!
Thanks very much for making this video. I have been blundering around with my voice setting for ages, and never been happy with them. Your approach makes great sense. Fewer effects but carefully set up. I watched your video and tried your settings. It is a big improvement for me and my next video. Of course, I used the best I could find in Logic, but I have noted the third party plugins you mentioned. Thanks again. Great stuff!
Amazing! Happy to hear that. I’m actually working on Podcast Voice presets for Logic, GarageBand & Audition. Will be available for purchase within the next few weeks! I’ll make a video about them, so be sure to subscribe.
@@itsryanfreeman Yeti is so popular. I also subscribed to Invisible City. I will listen with interest from a social and sound engineering perspective on my JBL bluetooth mono speaker :-)
What a great video. Started doing more voice work on my youtube channel and will use this in my future videos now I have a decent mic. Thanks for sharing.
How do you get your audio to the correct LUFS (-16 for podcasting)? Still not sure about this bit...as in my mind, a limiter at -0.1 would be very loud, wouldn't it?
So I take it that your initial voiceover recording is done a treated environment? I don't get the sense of any reflection and so on. Do you have something equivalent to a reference track or podcast on your site?
Hi, thanks for the video, there was a lot of useful information, nicely explained. I am wondering though: i hear lots of plosives in your recording, would a pop shield help with this? Would more distance to the mic help or would it ruin the sound in general? I'd appreciate your reply. All the best and keep it up.
Hey - Yes, there are plosives and yes, a pop filter of some sort would help.. But I think a pop filter looks ugly in videos and It was a compromise I was willing to make. You could distance yourself from the mic if you don't have a filter/shield, but that would take away from some of that classic close 'broadcast / radio' sound.
Thank you for the tips. I managed to create the sound I wanted on the vocals, saved it as a default and then when I added my music tracks the sound was off on all of them. Did saving the default cause that?
@@itsryanfreeman I figured it out. Looks like I had the EQ button on while working on one of the music tracks. I think I've resolved it now. Thank you for coming back to me so quickly.
Thanks so much. I’ve been suing auphonic to keep it simple and it’s nice and all, but this sounds better. Rocking SM7B’s. I have my gain up higher and occasionally have a peak so I’ll try lowering it a little bit and see how it goes.
Hi! Great video! I just starting a podcast and have an RE20 mic. I've been looking for a mic stand just like the one you have. Any chance you could tell me what kind of boom mic/stand that is and where I could find it? Thanks!
Got this in my recommended and love it. My main question though is that I'm using a preamp / processor for my microphone and wonder if these same techniques would be applicable in post production considering I already have an effect chain created anaologly.
Hey - I think if you're already processing your audio from hardware, then you don't really need to include everything that I'm doing in-the-box. Perhaps an EQ, de-esser and limiter..?
@@itsryanfreeman Okay. Makes sense. I'm currently using a DBX 286s for my processing. So I have a lot of options right there that you mentioned. It's worked really well for me when doing voice over work.
Ryan could you make a video or a series like this for the audacity?. The thing is that about the macros and audacity there is not really much out there that can be as helpful as your videos.
Hey! Thanks for the recommendation. I think about making a video for processing Audacity. If you're looking to achieve this sound, I do have Presets for Audacity that I made to replicate my sound & technique: www.itsryanfreeman.com/products/podcast-voice-processing-preset
This is such a big help - thank you! 2 questions from me: your vocal tracks are in stereo; so far I've been duplicating mine and splitting them left and right into a bus to make a mono track. Do you have a preference to one or the other? Also, what's the best EQ plugin you've used for Reaper?
No problem! A mono recording (signal) will still sound/be mono even if it's in a stereo track, unless you add stereo separation effects that uses the stereo field. I have presets made for Reaper, I'd recommend you check them out if interested! ryanfreeman.com/presets
Would you recommend, for a podcast that records three to four people in a room to record lower and then in post raise the volume. I find that since I’m used to speaking on my mic I always sound boomy and clear but others stay away from the mic just enough to sound lower and I have trouble making all voices sound equal. I use a mixing board with levels pretty much the same. Slight eq differences within the board.

I appreciate it! Best of luck with your podcast endeavour
@@itsryanfreeman Thank you! Happy New Year and I look forward to more of your tutorials!
Im on pro tools... whats a good compressor and EQ, I think thats what I need. I got a pair of the shure sm7b's and they're great but I still need that umph, that boosted sound.
Thanks for the advice on the EQ!
You’re welcome 👌🏻
Thanks for this! I have no idea what I am doing but managed to pick it up some how!
No problem. Good luck!
Hey - I just released my audio processing presets - I thought you might find them useful! Wanted to share: www.itsryanfreeman.com/presets
Thank you Ryan it was very useful
Hey ryan, found out your video and was so amaze with your sounds proccesings. I want to ask how do you set the gain on your mic? Is it by default like at 12 o'clock? Or maybe do you have another opinion. Thanks
Hey, thanks. My mic doesn’t have a gain knob. It’s plugged into my audio interface , which is where I adjust the gain/input level. You can find all the gear I use here: www.itsryanfreeman.com/pages/my-gear-list
Awesome video. So suprised you use the LA2a for this I would have thought it would be way too high ratio for dialogue
Sounds good to me.. 🙌🏻
@@itsryanfreemanno doubt. I'm going to give it a go next time
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing Ryan...am a Subscriber now.
Thanks so much. More to come soon!
@@itsryanfreeman I will be delighted to hear them. Remember, and I know you will, we are all using Yetis, LOL!
haha! OK, I might make some presets being microphone specific... Especially for the Yeti
@@itsryanfreeman Yeti is so popular. I also subscribed to Invisible City. I will listen with interest from a social and sound engineering perspective on my JBL bluetooth mono speaker :-)
@@JustinTimeEnglishClip haha sounds good! Thanks again and I wish you all the best
Holy fucking shit this is good. And your audio sounds virtually perfect, which is a good start.
Haha thanks some guy!
What a great video. Started doing more voice work on my youtube channel and will use this in my future videos now I have a decent mic. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing your work.
how do you find those compressors ? is it in logic natively or did you buy them (sorry I'm a newb to logic) I like your tutorial best!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge on EQ, I found these tips particularly helpful of all the video's I watched. Keep up the great work (y)
Thanks for the feedback, Max!
Ryan, this was a very nice overview, your work is great too! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it helped. Thank you!
Excellent video, thanks for the info.
No problem! Thanks for watching 👊🏻
Thank-you for the great video. Getting ready to record my first podcast and needed some input on editing the vocals. Thanks again. :)
Thank you for this! You’re amazing!! :D
This was super helpful. Thank you for sharing!
No problem! Glad you found it helpful :)
I also use an LA-2A and a very similar EQ curve for my podcast. I also enjoy a bit of tape saturation for the heck of it too.
Great video. 👌🏻👌🏻
Literally everything I needed to see! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! this 'secret sauce' really improved my meditation audio!!
Awesome! Happy to help :)
Fantastic! Thanks so much for showing your process. VERY helpful.
Love the video! I'm planning on creating a podcast and this definitely helped!
Amazing! Best of luck with the podcast 😊
Thanks Bro!
No problem
very nice tutorial. Big thanks!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
No problem! More to come. Thanks for your time watching
Very good stuff. You have educated me.
Cheers!
Thank you for the tips. I managed to create the sound I wanted on the vocals, saved it as a default and then when I added my music tracks the sound was off on all of them. Did saving the default cause that?
Hard to say! Not exactly sure what happened... Sorry I can’t be of any help.
Sounds good. Good luck!
Hi! Great video! I just starting a podcast and have an RE20 mic. I've been looking for a mic stand just like the one you have. Any chance you could tell me what kind of boom mic/stand that is and where I could find it? Thanks!
Get this one: www.bluedesigns.com/products/compass/
Awesome! 🙌🏻
This is awesome, thanks for the pointers!
No problem! Glad you enjoyed it.
the plosives and mouth clicks are killing me... Izotope RX is a must. other that that, very discreet and smooth
This would sound amazing with my Rode NT. Thank you !
Yes, you’re going to have to adjust the volume in post. I’d also recommend telling your guests to stay close to the mic before you begin recording.
Just wanted to say I hit a 'thumbs up' as you said :).
Woo! Thanks haha
Great stuff! Thanks!
Thank you!
