    Another big thing is check your bitrate, I ignored my bitrate setting for a year. And I kept wondering why there was bad sounding frequencies and qualities of each mic I got and finally realized that I had my bitrate on my focusrite and fl studio way too low. Keep the bitrate and sample rate at 48000 and above to get the best quality sound out of your mic or if you’re using the direct input for instruments.

    I definitely have over-used effects during tracking, so make sure not to cloud your performance by over-using reverb and delay during this stage phase! While it’s great to enhance performance, it can hide some basic flaws in the performance that require a retake or more time in editing.

    • @elzycollins
      @elzycollins Місяць тому

      I normally record dry but after hearing this.. I can imagine delay could get a bit messy and mean you would need to do more retakes but can you recommend I EQ and use compresser I'd use 1176 and LA2A then just add reverb, delay, de ester after recording?

  • @prontorobertopronto
    @prontorobertopronto Рік тому +105

    Mistake #4: NOPE - that's not a mistake. I recommend recording with as few effects as possible. Of course, a compressor and a few discreet EQ settings on the preamp can be helpful. But: Basically, the singer should focus on his sound, intonation, pronunciation, formants and thus on his personal sound. Of course, the singer or the producer working with the singer should have an idea of how the vocals are to be used in the mix (hence the larger microphone distance if necessary, or closer if desired) - but basically, effects should be used very discreetly. Too many effects can distract from the actual job. I think this tip is too undifferentiated for me.

    • @kevinmatthew6276
      @kevinmatthew6276 Рік тому +12

      I agree. I've always encouraged the artists I record for to use zero effects during the recording process. This allows them to really find their voice and become comfortable with it.

      Ya i agree too. But sometimes when I'm a bit nervous about a few lines in the studio and the producer puts some nice reverb on it, I feel a bit more relaxed and comfortable so I get what he means here. But personally, I can't put effects during my home recordings anyways because my computer will crash lol. So I have to change buffer size and add VSTs after regardless lol

    • @TargetAcquisition
      @TargetAcquisition Рік тому +2

      It depends on the feeling the producer and artist want. FX may be required for a particular vibe.
      A song that focuses on a true vocalist, needs minimal FX. Such as a Mariah Carrey song. But other genres, such as Trap & EDM tend to be FX heavy.

Engineering techniques that we engage today would have led to unemployment back in the 80s had we tried to pull it off then. No one saw this coming. Recording on a dry track or with VST's is actually a good suggestion. Me personally, I like to hear myself as to what it's going to sound like, so I tend to use VST's. However I have noticed that when using vst's, especially autotune, it does create a small delay (even with a powerful processor and A grade soundcard). This small delay is barely noticeable, so much that it doesn't bother me to record with it, as it's too small to influence my timings. At least so I thought, I have discovered that when using VST's I'm worse at holding the correct pitch with my voice (singing well, as far as I even can, I'm not a great singer unfortunately). Recording without using vst's does seem to improve my singing. However it's harder to create the actual sound I actually want even when adding vst's later on. Because apperently this seems to happen: Because my recording is less pitch-correct, the effect of autotune seems stronger and tend to create the sound I want.
    Same goes for reverb or any effect, because you can already hear it in your recording you start adjusting your voice to the recording-delay and the effect to make it sound the way you want.
    So I believe it's really up to what sound you want to create.

    • @MLGRDR
      @MLGRDR Рік тому +3

      Also for anyone considering using Autotune, It's important to remember to check for a Low Latency mode, I know Antares has it as a feature. Waves Autotune has a lower strain on processing power as well.

    • @janinipizzicato
      @janinipizzicato Рік тому +2

      I'd recommend recording on two seperate Tracks, one dry (muted) and one with input fx, that cuts down a lot of latency, bc input fx don't require as much processing power, they just get baked in on the spot.

I feel like I have a legitimate reason and maybe I most likely have a lot to learn but, I have a rode nt1 and when I record/mix the vocals they always have this boxed sound and the low end sounds harsh no matter how I eq. If I take too much out, the vocal then sounds thin and horrible.

  • @lancerben4551
    @lancerben4551 Рік тому +16

    Those are great tips ! I'd add, recording with VST effects running is very important not just to feel inspired, but if you are running effects like reverb and delays especially , it's important you hear them as you can use the effects to enhance the performance itself, timing wise . But of course, they have to be properly configured or else they can be incredibly distracting. So if you don't know how to time delays yet, better just record with a little reverb and compression, not much else.

    Really the key is consistency and documentation of what works. You don't have to worry about distance, as software is wonderful for that. Get your levels right and remember your specs

    2:15 I found it's best to turn the gain on 2 all the way down as well, otherwise you'll get extra background hiss through the Scarlett.

    So I have the problem that when I position myself too near to the mic, my vocals sound distorted, probably because of the gain???? Is there a certain rule for the gain controller on the mic or is it just optimizing by "try and error"?

    Quick tip: if your room is very shit sounding acoustically speaking, use a dynamic mic vs a condenser and mic closer when possible to get less room sound!

    I would love to buy myself a pair of those new adams studio monitor or Yamaha i saw you review the other day, but here in Jamaica we spend all the time at work while earning the nickle building someone else dream and not being able to build our dreams because of low wage and inflation, i would love to buy one but USD TO JMD IS $150JMD THAT MAKES 1USD plus customs duty is about 80% of what any speaker items cost even for headphones. So its a sad situation for me 😭. But man i love your set up.

    How do I separate outputs? I use a Focusrite Solo as interface. My Presonus Eris, Aston Mic and DT990s are all connected there. When recording, I use the DT990s to monitor my vocals while listening to the beat. Then, I would like to switch the audio output to my Presonus Eris so that I can hear it in actual space. How can I do this without plugging things in and out? What am I missing here? Pls help :))

    Hi, I need some help. I use Logic pro X. Recently I have been facing some issues with recording vocals on stereo. I had once before recorded a track not long ago and the vocals were recorded on stereo with both left and right channels showing up. Now when I open my DAW and open new audio recording, I only see left channel on stereo. I still use the same audio interface and the same microphone. Could you help me on how to get back to recording on stereo with both channels.?

    With two of the mistakes I disagree.
    Mistake #1: Imo intense rock vocals work best rather close to the mic, because that captures all the harshness well. Stepping so far back just includes lots of room resonance, which never really sounds good in a suboptimally treated smallish room. Room ambience can be added digitally anyways. For a consistent tone, I'm trying to keep the same distance every time. On the other hand, the setup shown for more intimate vocals is too close for the pop filter to work properly.
    Mistake #3: Having stepped up from a rode NT1A to a Townsend Labs Sphere L22, I definately have to blame the microphone for my sound. The difference is like night and day - any of you would notice it. An AKG C414 XLII, however, was not an improvement over the rode, despite being much more expensive. That is not to say that other factors are not just as important for sound quality.

    My Rode NT1 A doesn't power well with my Scarlett, seems like the phantom power of the Scarlett doest tap in coz it powers momentarily then goes mute even with gain maxed out. what could be the solution to get it to work. I just bought this mic about 7 months ago but haven't used it for longer than a month yet. Tried it with another sound card ECHO and it powers well

    I am only 34 sec into this video, and you've already shown SO MANY cuts. That is mad impressive, the content creator within me is dying to know - HOW are you getting that many shots? How are you planning all of 'em? Would LOVE to know! 🌹

      Thanks man!! I spend quite a bit of time figuring out what I want to show in each shot, and then I pick which type of shots I want to take (close up, long shot etc..) and at what angle. I try to make every shot different by changing angle and distance from camera.

    Im not having an issue with my mic, but with my audio interface lol. As soon as I try to use the built in effects it turns into a cutting mess. Using the Soundblaster k3+, and gonna get something more user friendly. The lack of software support or how to use it out of the box is just sad, and Ive tried just about every scenario except using a different pc. Gonna make a trip to guitar center on thursday
