Did you know I record a weekly podcast on online business and life over at GrahamCochrane.com?
Well, I do - and I recently posted a video showing my super simple podcast setup and revealed I use nothing but a USB microphone and the free Garageband software.
This led to a few people asking what am I doing in Garageband to make my podcast sound more professional. And today I want to take you behind the scenes and show you my exact plugin choice and settings to turn my raw voice into a more broadcast-ready audio file.

Dude this was so awesome. Thank you . My wife and I are getting into podcasting and using GarageBand. This was perfect. Thank you. Checking out your links now.
EXCELLENT video. The only tip I would advise is to explain when setting up the EQ that the settings need to be adjusted based on the individual person's voice. You chart was a huge help and great start but I made some changes that significantly improved my audio. Thank you!!
Love your videos bro! Keep them coming.
Thank you for this! Extremely invaluable resource you've created. Cheers!
This was very helpful when I was trying to improve audio quality of my podcast. Thank you for sharing.
This was so helpful! Thank you for showing how to edit and enhance my voice!

Very helpful! Thank you.
Thanks a lot, very useful!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Great tips 💓
great video thanks for sharing
Hi Graham. Informative video, thanks!
I was wondering, should i use a de-esser in parallel processing or in series with the podcast vocal? I tired both approaches, but couldn't make out any overall change to the source file itself. Maybe i'm missing a step here? Or there is a gap in fundamental understanding as far as Serial Vs Parallel Processing is concerned.
What are your thoughts on it?
Nice!
Graham, What do you have the The Gain and Output Levels at in Limiter? Frequency and Harmonics in Exciter? Thanks for this video and the help.
Great vid, love the simplicity. Maybe just my ears, but although the exciter did add a bright top end, it also introduced a harshness to the “s” sounds that could be tamed with a de-esser.
yep
Definitely agree that a de-esser could've been useful!! Perhaps it wasn't available as a stock plugin within GarageBand. Although you think they would have one!
Where do you put your de-esser in your vocal chain? Beginning or end? Thanks!!
@@heyiplaybassguitar There is a de-esser built in to GarageBand, you can try the "Bright Vocal" presets where they have both the De-Esser (by default disabled) and the Exciter in the chain.
I just got a rode podmic with a minifuse 1 without a cloud lifter and I wanted to learn how do you boost the audio
Hi very cool , plz do more on pro tools with pro plugins for more exciting n interesting as usual! thz Graham
I recorded one of my songs through garage band then sent it to Steve albinis team. They liked it. It’s on my UA-cam “ dead Vega in spain”
Awesome video! Thank you! 👏🏽😊 I was wondering if you could do a video about copyright laws and that sorts thing. (If you already have than, oops... my bad.) Thanks again! I hope you have a wonderful day!
By the way, regarding noise in voice recordings, are you guys aware of "RTX Voice"? At the moment it's not available as VST, works only in selected software like Zoom and needs NVIDIA graphic card to work, but the results are spectacular.
What about getting rid of the chhhhhh sound. Starting out with VO/Audiobooks and I seem to be getting a bit of that static. Using Synido mic and compressor with IPad and garage band. Trying to do it as free as possible like you mentioned hahah thank you so much for this info
hi, could check the rode nt usb mini?
Does this work if you are recording for two hosts on two different mics
Wait how did you get that waves plug in?????
Would you still use this over clarity VX by Waves?
So, this might be a dumb question but when you record your voice...do you just record it with nothing added or tweaked...in other words "Plain" and then tweak it? Or do you tweak it and then always set it that way?
I have the same questions! Did you ever find out the answer?
How do you save your settings so it is available every time you go into GB?
I don't understand how you opened the compressor settings - what you were clicking on was off screen in the video - could you please explain with more detail how you got there? Many thanks - Jennifer
Sorry I see that these settings are coming from your plug in
Hey man I’m trying to start a pod cast and I’m having trouble mixing my sound I’m trying to get the natural sound I want to send you a clip and ask for your best advice
Could you make a video on Free Daws?
please give me a free DAW also if you have 😎
@@sexboyaz Graham mentioned pro tools first a ton of times, its free
I personally use Cakewalk, it's free, no track limitations, it runs on less powerful pcs.. I'm just searching for comparisons but I like this one..
Reaper is free
Jnm,
how do I get NS1?
I don't know why people knock garageband...its a great program, and u can get professional recordings with it...!
Mais vale a lágrima da derrota, do que a vergonha de não ter lutado.

Am I the only one who doesn't hear a difference when the Exciter is switched on?
i saw the whole thing and still clue less, he doesnt show the specifics of where you get those tools froms. thi is not for beginers
I’ve heard many times, from “experts”, that you shouldn’t use GarageBand to record music.
Why? That is ridiculous.
You certainly could use it, but there’s no reason to with so many DAWs out there with more features
for something as simple as a handful of spoken voices, I don't see the need for anything too extraordinary for mixing. also I keep finding out that these amazing albums I listen to, Grimes, Fiona Apple, were recorded initially in Garage Band. It's all about the talent and the choices you make, the ideas are more important than the gear.
monkey dingo he said music, for a podcast or whatever its fine. And again you can use it for music, there’s just no reason to when something like Reaper is free
not of any use to a beginner with no experience in garageband.
