    Did you know I record a weekly podcast on online business and life over at GrahamCochrane.com?
    Well, I do - and I recently posted a video showing my super simple podcast setup and revealed I use nothing but a USB microphone and the free Garageband software.
    This led to a few people asking what am I doing in Garageband to make my podcast sound more professional. And today I want to take you behind the scenes and show you my exact plugin choice and settings to turn my raw voice into a more broadcast-ready audio file.

    EXCELLENT video. The only tip I would advise is to explain when setting up the EQ that the settings need to be adjusted based on the individual person's voice. You chart was a huge help and great start but I made some changes that significantly improved my audio. Thank you!!

    Hi Graham. Informative video, thanks!
    I was wondering, should i use a de-esser in parallel processing or in series with the podcast vocal? I tired both approaches, but couldn't make out any overall change to the source file itself. Maybe i'm missing a step here? Or there is a gap in fundamental understanding as far as Serial Vs Parallel Processing is concerned.
    What are your thoughts on it?

  • @JustinChampa

    Great vid, love the simplicity. Maybe just my ears, but although the exciter did add a bright top end, it also introduced a harshness to the “s” sounds that could be tamed with a de-esser.

    • @heyiplaybassguitar
      @heyiplaybassguitar 4 роки тому

      Definitely agree that a de-esser could've been useful!! Perhaps it wasn't available as a stock plugin within GarageBand. Although you think they would have one!
      Where do you put your de-esser in your vocal chain? Beginning or end? Thanks!!

    • @PhuahYeeKeat
      @PhuahYeeKeat 4 роки тому

      @@heyiplaybassguitar There is a de-esser built in to GarageBand, you can try the "Bright Vocal" presets where they have both the De-Esser (by default disabled) and the Exciter in the chain.

    By the way, regarding noise in voice recordings, are you guys aware of "RTX Voice"? At the moment it's not available as VST, works only in selected software like Zoom and needs NVIDIA graphic card to work, but the results are spectacular.

    What about getting rid of the chhhhhh sound. Starting out with VO/Audiobooks and I seem to be getting a bit of that static. Using Synido mic and compressor with IPad and garage band. Trying to do it as free as possible like you mentioned hahah thank you so much for this info

    So, this might be a dumb question but when you record your voice...do you just record it with nothing added or tweaked...in other words "Plain" and then tweak it? Or do you tweak it and then always set it that way?

    Why? That is ridiculous.

    • @dickdanson

      You certainly could use it, but there’s no reason to with so many DAWs out there with more features

      for something as simple as a handful of spoken voices, I don't see the need for anything too extraordinary for mixing. also I keep finding out that these amazing albums I listen to, Grimes, Fiona Apple, were recorded initially in Garage Band. It's all about the talent and the choices you make, the ideas are more important than the gear.

    • @dickdanson
      @dickdanson 4 роки тому +1

      monkey dingo he said music, for a podcast or whatever its fine. And again you can use it for music, there’s just no reason to when something like Reaper is free
