Thanks once again for doing my pick! Hey Phil, you’re entitled to your opinion most people think the intro of the song is quite beautiful, but I think it might be the kind of thing that will grow on you if you hear it a couple of times… And yes, those that have suggested doing When The Levee Breaks next are right on. Official studio version from the fourth album 1971. That’s yet another side of Zeppelin that’s a little bit different than anything you’ve heard. Zeppelin takes you to the deep South… Do it!!! Love ya 😊❤

The acoustic intro is masterful work by Jimmy Page. It underscores the fact that Zep isn’t just heavy rock - they are incredible at the folk side of the spectrum.the musicianship in this band is elite. Their versatility is one of their greatest aspects. I would listen to it again, if I were you.

      I completely agree with
@johntuttle9544. I like this channel and most of Phil’s music reactions. I think his past hip hop and rap background polluted his understanding of classical folk music and the beautiful acoustic guitar. This sounds very much like an Anglo Celtic song.

The acoustic opening is actually one of Zep's most iconic progressions, and usually one of the first things aspiring guitarists try to replicate; it requires two techniques called "pull offs" and "hammer ons" to play it. After a few more repeat listenings the beauty of it will sink in. I've always loved this song because of all it's transitions, as well as its"Ramble On" magical journey vibe.

In fact, I think three of the best zeppelin songs ever are on this album. The other two being “the song remains the same” and the “rain song” you may have already listened to these, but if you haven’t, please do the studio versions of these two songs, and I enjoy your videos and comments down here in North Carolina USA. I luv Canada, spent four months there once on a business trip, huge RUSH fan too.

Interesting take and appreciate your honesty. For guitarists at Guitar Center that intro is one of the most identifiable and one that aspiring guitarists try to learn (like Stairway) but Page is very hard to copy. His rhythm and strumming patterns are idiosyncratic and he has gift of building tension and motion in everything he plays. He just had that magic.

You seem to be a studio oriented guy so I'm a little surprised about the beginning, but what you have to understand is that this is a device that gets used a lot, maybe it got used more back then than it does now but I still hear it in current music and I've used it myself.
It's where you know what the mix is going to be like when everything finally arrives to the party. And you set everything perfectly for that, and then you do an intro where you strip all of that away and you start with one acoustic guitar and then you add another one or maybe it's a mandolin, and then you add his voice and suddenly that extra beat in that intro pattern makes sense.
Robert's melodic line just fits over that perfectly and it generates this kind of anticipation for something to come - it's not settled into a groove or anything yet; it's heading towards a groove but building, and then all the sudden they bring in the rest of the band and the rest of the instruments. It hits so hard, and now the mix is exactly what they were heading for all along anyway. It's like leading your target but in an artistic way.
If you haven't already, 100% check out the Pink Floyd classic Wish You Were Here. Listen to how they do the intro, it's a very extreme version of what we had going on here. Very extreme.

It is popular because it has everything in it for ALL ears! Great voice, a story, melody, keyboard pipes, acoustic, electric guitar, soft rock, hard Rock, great drum work, and a legendary guitar solo with a solo voice to close it out! All that combined, written perfectly from slow to fast. It has nothing negative to pick out? The whole song is written in progression also, which keeps people wanting to hear what's coming next? Long song, but everyone knows it? Coincidence? I think not? Brilliance, YES!!!!

Jimmy Page didn't want Led Zeppelin to be a singles band because he thought it would inhibit their creativity. Singles at that time had to be no more than 3 minutes to get radio play and bands would be judged by them - only as good as their last single. Jimmy wanted more freedom and his gamble paid off. People went to concerts and bought the albums.

I beg to differ on the intro. You have to have the slow to appreciate the fast. The soft to understand the hard. When the hammer finally drops, it hits much harder than if it opened with it. The complete studio recording was released on Led Zeppelin IV in November 1971. The band's record label, Atlantic Records, wanted to issue Stairway to Heaven as a single, but the band's manager Peter Grant refused requests to do so in both 1972 and 1973. As a result, many people bought the fourth album as if it were the single.

It's because the intro has a weird time signature. It's not a straight 4/4. Many people get the intro wrong b/c of this and they try to play it straight. Just tap your foot and you'll see dropped and added beats. It's like what they did with Rock and Roll. When you hear that first snare it's not actually on the 1 beat of measure. People get that wrong also. Zeppelin had little idiosyncrasies like that scattered throughout their catalog.

Took me a while to play rock n roll correctly lol. Like 20 yrs of playing it my way lol. Got it right the last 10. Of all the songs I can porch sit and play, I always get the best response from my Led Zep set. I even got a acoustic Living Loving Maid thing. LOL Fun songs all.

The song originates from J.R.R. Tolkein's poem "Over the Hills and Far Away" describing the Hobbits' adventures, so your interpretation was pretty close👍. Robert Plant was a big fan of Tolkein and several of their songs refer to Lord of the Rings books. Check out Ramble On, Misty Mountain Hop. Great Reaction!

The acoustic intro is by far the best part of this song! In fact, their mystical parts (which are usually acoustic) are always Zeppelin at their very best. And there's a lot more of it in their catalogue than you probably realize.

So hard to just pick one Zep song as a favorite glad to see you guys are Getting The Lead Out again though can never go wrong with anything from them my favorite Zeppelin song is always the one that is playing at the time. BTW Jimmy Page just had his 80th birthday in January.

That intro is an example of the kind of odd/unique time signatures that John Paul Jones and Jimmy Paige are famous for. You should listen to it another time or ten to really appreciate what a work of art it truly is.

It's not surprising to me that Stairway to Heaven is popular. I think it deserves all it's accolades and fame.
Nice reaction, appreciate your honest opinion to one of my favourite Zeppelin tunes. But I think this is very well mixed and the intro is a very special acoustic/folk chord progression in my opinion. This one never gets old. Brings that special majestical mystique to music that only Zeppelin can bring.

Robert Plants solo album Fate of Nations is incredible. The song I Believe is about his 5 year old son Karac who died of a stomach virus in 1977. He also wrote All My Love for Karac which appeared on the Led Zeppelin In Through The Outdoor album.
