I KNOW RIGHT!!!!???? I grew up on Zeppelin and it was always just great music. To watch others discover it with new eyes is a revelation. Especially these two guys who really know music and really appreciate music. Other reactors just head nod along and say “ohh this is great!” These guys really know what they are talking about!!!!!
Back in college, I had recently started dating a guy and he invited me over for dinner and at one point looked at me and sang this song. Lawd hab mercy! I was a goner! Thirty-five years later we call this song "The Wooing Song" and my kids know it is why they walk this earth. Good, good memories.
Both albums were witten at the same time- That's one of reason that even though this is titled "Houses of the Holy' that actual song "Houses of the Holy" is a track on the album "Phyiscal Graffitti".
This song has a very lush guitar sound. Jimmy was always keen to expand and explore examples of what he called his "guitar army". It's working title was "Many, Many Times" and it's an intoxicating mix of acoustic, 6-string, and 12-string guitars and, if you listen, the acoustic plays underneath the entire piece, even after the electric comes in and Jonesy's bass bumps keep it rollicking along. The title has a hint of Tolkien about it since it's also the name of a poem he wrote. The outro was the echo of Jimmy's guitar and a clavinet played by Jonesy. It adds a wonderful, subtle, dream-like ending to a fairy-kissed song.
lol at everybody getting excited for Physical Graffiti and we still got the second side of this bad boy, which is absolute 🔥 in and of itself. Might be the best four song series in their canon.
Great reaction gents ! Jimmy Page started out with a six string acoustic guitar, then you heard the guitar become richer and fuller sounding at the 46 second mark - Jimmy introduced the 12 string acoustic guitar and mimicks what the six string acoustic is doing. Then the Led Zeppelin thunderous take off ! The electric six string guitar kicks in and the acoustic guitars are still going. There are no mandolin and he's not playing the double neck 🙂 You hear Jimmy's guitar solo - he starts out on the high notes -- he starts mid range and then goes down in those lower thicker strings - for this solo and then all over the place. Jimmy loves to get down into those lower register notes on his solos. Many guitarists don't do that. There's a false ending - when the music drops out -- you hear John Paul Jones playing the clavinet - it's an older piano type instrument. Then you hear Page come with a pedal steel guitar -- those sliding notes in the outro accompanying Jones along w the clavinet. Plant's voice is awesome and Bonzo's drum are killer. The production, sounds and songs by Led Zeppelin from any of their albums - is spot on and could fit in - as just as good and in many cases better than many records and songs nowadays. Love your reactions guys. PS: This was my first full Led Zeppelin record which I heard in full in my teens. I was blown away by it. The diversity on this album is unbelievable.
The basic recording was drums, bass and acoustic guitar. Then Jimmy laid down his 12 String and electric guitars over it. The live version from their How the West was Won album is KILLER.
This was always on of my favorite Zep songs....just so tight and varied without being something you ever expect. Their talent was always stunning in every area.
I was a DJ in high school and used this as a final song reading the sign off message over that outro (yeah, small town radio stations used to sign off for the night).
I'm loving revisiting the whole 'zep library via you guys. By FAR my favorite music, and I taught my 16 year old daughter from early age this is gold standard of music. As awesome as it has been thus far, there is still MORE TO COME for you!! If we're voting, Ramble On is my favorite.
Typical of Zeppelin, they put the funk into what I like to call "Picasso mode" with alternating time signatures, including 9/8. It sounds like a puzzle that your mind wants to figure out.
you guys are right about the depth of their music catalogue. This is 5 albums in and the next is a double album and possibly the greatest double album ever made
You could hear a pin drop at the very end when Jimmy played the soft ending. That means they got the respect that they created from such a great song!!!!
When zeppelin 4 came out, I told my cousin and friends that were there,,,in fifty yrs ppl will learn about zeppelin and hear them for the first time and go nuts,,then when those ppl turn 60’s,,they will teach teens then about Led Zeppelin, which will bring zeppelin into the next century, was my prediction
Back in 75, my husband and I, along with the 2 guitarists from his band, drove 100 miles to Albany, GA for him to shop for a new set of drums. There was a very young boy in there playing around on several acoustic guitars, looked to be a pre-teen as we were all teenagers and he was much younger than us. He started playing this and smoked up the room. He never missed a lick. Caused Mark and Phil to slip into depression mode 😆 Yeah, that kid was THAT GOOD. Was a long ride home because he left them both speechless.

The Rhythm riff that Jimmy uses during the guitar solo is brilliant. Get ahold of How the West Was Won and listen to the version on that live recording that was from L.A. Forum (25 June 1972) and Long Beach Arena (27 June 1972). Jimmy was THE riff master.

Houses of the Holy is incredible but there’s some tracks on PG that will have you foaming at the mouth! Now I’m in my 40’s. Unfortunately there is a drop off after Physical Graffiti, excepting a few great songs. But it’s extremely rare that a band puts out such a long string of great albums, with that growth and versatility throughout. And yes, The Rain Song moves me to tears also.
Back in high school I used to play this song on drums with my buddies, and could never get Bonzo's kick pattern down. Plus he slightly changes the time of his beat at the end of the bridge that threw me off. Its subtle but genius!

Kudos to you both for your appreciation and musical journey. We are all far more alike than different. Music is one of those bridges for all people in the world. From all over the world. Exactly. I’m right back to being 15 years old
This was Zeppelin really splitting wide open in the creative zone.
My favorite Zeppelin song and one of the greatest ever rock songs
Page playing all guitars - 6 string, 12 string acoustics, 6 & 12 electrics. At the height of his POWERS!!!! #longlivePage

Everybody is doing heavy lifting here. John Paul Jones and freaking Bonham on that kick drum on the BackBeat oh my.
great comment, "it's hard to keep up with yourself, when you are so far ahead of everyone else."
