I put a 283 in my '70 Nova when I was in high school. It was a beefy little brute, tough as nails and I built it to a 301. Had crazy HP for my Nova!!!! Excellent find!!!!!
In high school in 1969 I found a 56 chevy that was sitting in a field. I paid $10 for it. It had some body damage and no motor. I did all the body work and interior work. A field of my dad painted it for $10 dollars, I bought the paint. Found a 62 283 in a junk yard for $200. Cleaned all the sludge out of it. It was a 283 power pack 4 barrel. It was a great motor.
@@paulyboy1951 Thanks for sharing! I love hearing by all the stories and memories from other folks about all the cars and engines they built back in the day. Sounds like that ole 56 was quite the unit back in the day!
Just bought 2 with transmissions a few days ago for 500 cad, it was a lady's husbands, sadly he passed away. Both motors are from 67, and have the power pak heads
Those TH 400 transmissions can be used behind Cadillac, Oldsmobile, Buick, and Pontiac. The only thing is, since they were the Cadillac, they are longer than the others. Still not a bad deal.
@@ob1kenobi748 Most of the Cadillac cars used a longer tail shaft than Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac, the bolt pattern on the transmission/engine block are the same in case you didn't know
I've built some 283s used 305 vortec heads something under .480 lift cam decent intake carb headers . Ud be surprised. Low gears 4 speed it's fun . I mean they don't make a ton of power but sure are fun. Light car S10 etc helps
the heads are not power pack heads the ones on the engine you have does not have a triangle marking on the front of the head yours are 2 barrel low compression heads if it came out with a 4 barrell it would have power pack heads ive had both engines before !

1 gallon can, 5L ton of fuel Put a cap full of fuel down both throats of the carburettor,. Set the timing right, it'll light off and fire up first or second go.
We did a tear down (it’s in an up coming video in a few weeks) and I found out why it wouldn’t run. The timing gear off the cam striped the nylon off the cam gear so it was skipping time.
For those who don't realize it or think this engine is too small to worry with, your common modern-day small block Ford 4.6 liter engine is only 281 cubes...

Had a friend put a 283 in a little chevy luv truck, that truck was insane.
BEST LITTLE MOTOR GM EVER MADE ! ❤😁✌
283 is a great engine.
Had a hot one in the late 90s.
Super fun motor in a fun car.
Would rev to the moon.
Surprised a lot of guys on the street.
I had an old 307 that would miss. Turned out an old plug wire was shooting a spark to the exhaust manifold. Easy fix.
283 best engine ever
Had one in 76 Camaro, blew up junk 307 on purpose, 327 350hp heads, would rev to 7,000 rpm would hit gears at 6500

The Mighty Mouse 283! They run amazingly well. Love mine.
What a beauty! Love the old 283 great engine.

Ok, I made a big mistake. My apologies to everyone.
Thank you for correcting me sir.
It's my first time seeing your channel I glad I saw it! A 283 is the perfect episode to watch for the first time!
I appreciate that!

That and a lot of these didn't have harden valve seats .
Headers power pack heads and a 4BBL all it needs
305ho heads better
Altho it is pushing the limits of overboring, some guys bored them out to 302. Yes, the stroke is the same, 3 inches. 1/8 over equals 4 inch bore.
Those old 283 engines were very tough came out in 1957 . 3 on the tree lol

Late 283's had cast cranks unless for trucks.

283 WAS A GOOD MOTOR SO WAS GMC 283 INVADER ONE WAS A 67 CHEVY TRUCK 3 SPEED ON COLUM AN THE OTHER GMC ONE TON 4 SPEED ...........
If not mistaken don't think points dist. was getting 12v from key power. Really need to check on this when installing or test firing it.
Maybe not a points distributor but a HEI (like the one that was in the engine) uses 12 volts.
283 with a small G crank , means high RPM's should rapp the crap out of it and dump the clutch. Great for cutting nuts, not that I've ever done it ?
Ideal is 10% variable on compression test, block throttle open during test is best.....old school method
Hey bro how can I tell if my main bearings and rod bearings are standers or under size it’s for a 1994 5.7tbi
Put In a standard distributor.

That'll doit 😁👍
Your midnight demons where your lifters bled off from sitting after cranking it, you pumped them back up
That makes me feel better than thinking there are midnight demons

Yea, but with 50 years of technology behind it.
the spark knock sound it was making tells me the timing is too high. move the dist. back towards the carb.
That's advanced . clockwise is backing off timing . Advanced is counter clockwise. Spark knock is when it took far advanced.
I didn't see you started on here so I didn't hear it running
A friend of mine had a 67 GTO and swapped in a 283 ,he easily beated a 305 Nova (The pontiac engine was gone :-( )
The toughest engine that I've ever had is the 283.
All 265ci and 283ci Chevys had forged cranks.
All small journal cranks were forged.
Point the #1 on the distributor to #2 cylinder of the block…….that’s just the way these old 67s were.
a "fuelie"?
id rather have the 283 anyday with the right heads and cam it will scream !!!
If my old memory is correct that's a pu truck engine
And main says 0006 unsi
Had a few of those back in the day
They loved to eat rod bearings.
All kinds of weak stuff
Only numbers on the rod bearing are 025
Ùdde you give up too easily
I strongly recommend watching the rest of the series on this engine. You’ll see that I did not give up too easily.
