    back in 1984 we use to build 350 with pop up forged pistons , 480 cams . hv oil pumps for 750 bucks 350s with flat top forged pistons stockers 550 bucks . Zoner had the flat tops for 50 bucks a set . There was a bigger shop that had rebuilt trade ins for 375 bucks and if you gave them yours with tins and intake thats what you would get back . Their short blocks were 199 bucks , we could not match their prices . Tommy bought one and tore it down to see what it was and it had the works , resized rods turned crank over sized pistons ( forged ) and the heads were 3 angle with knurreled guides = REBUILT . We figured they must have bought the pistons by the 1,000s to have that price . They had 350 , 305 , 302 Ford and 351W for 375 $ If it wasn't for us building weird motors we would had closed down .

    How did you go with replacing the rusty oil pan, wouldn't be many with dipstick clearance on each side, or did you just knock the passenger side tube out ?

      @@BoneyardRevivalsthe round part of the cam that rides on the bearings in the block are journals, the lobes are what the lifters ride on. Use moly engine assembly lube. That won't run off if you have to let the build sit for a day or so.
      Also cooperation in a spray can is better for the head gasket, you can remove the gasket during the build if needed.

    back then stuff was cheap , white box 480 cams and lifters were 74 bucks and dual row timing chain kits with gears were 20 . 780 Holleys were 99 , so were aluminum intakes

      @jimmywilkinson9190 ok what does lift only have to do with anything? Any cam can have a 480 lift on the lobe .. they advertise duration at fifty thousandths lift on cams the amount of lift at the cam only w no other specs like lobe separation angle or advertised duration @ 50 in degrees of crankshaft rotation ..

      .480" lift cams were usually about 228-230 duration... start making power at 3,000 RPMs... a bit too high for a daily driver... I stocked up on Summit K1105 cams/lifters when they were on sale for $71.95... over $200 now after the Plandemic... may come back down some...

    Hey man great video!! Im trying my 1st rebuild this spring. Doesn't it make you nervous about not doing a ring job. I have been trying to find ways around doing a ring job because im a d.i.y.er and seems like alot of work for a newbie. I just feel like if im going to break the motor down i might as well rebuild everything. Am i wrong or am i overthinking it?😅

    • @BoneyardRevivals
      @BoneyardRevivals  Місяць тому +1

      @@thawiser_6409 I am not expert on anything but you are definitely not wrong or overthinking anything! If your time is limited and you only want to put an engine together once, it would probably be best to do everything while you’re there. If you are refreshing a small block Chevy it will be the easiest and best platform to learn on so don’t be nervous. Best way to learn is to just do it!
      I personally decided on this build to over look a few things like the rings because the cylinder wear looked good on this specific block and I decided to cross my fingers and let it ride. I don’t necessarily condone that but it’s what I did because I just wanted an engine back in my truck. My vehicles and engines are constantly getting changed or rebuilt so I didn’t feel bad about throwing this together quick. Some will tell you I am an idiot and this engine will blow up and blah blah blah. However it’s been in the truck for 3 months and gets driven at least 2 times a week and has ran great with zero issues.

    Good video, however, i think i would have pulled the crank and checked the bearings and replaced. Same with camshaft bearings, no matter if its a budget build. I would have checked, being that far into it. The cam you pulled out, had alot of wear on it. Definitely would have replaced lifters. A new set of rings and a hone job as well. Cylinders looked a little glazed. Looked like that engine had been high revved a bit, spinning tires. That low of miles would not have that kind of cam wear. That 106 cam, for mid , high torque be stressing those old crank bearings. This is almost a stretch to call a budget build. Gaskets replace, and paint.

    • @BoneyardRevivals
      @BoneyardRevivals  Місяць тому +1

      This is literally the definition of a budget build. I did look into the bearings but didn’t put it in the video. It also put another set of lifters in it. I am not trying to be rude but if you actually watch the video I explain everything. This is a solid engine and will be for a long time.

    • @ryanjohnson1814
      @ryanjohnson1814 Місяць тому

      @BoneyardRevivals , it was not meant to be disrespectful , just I do disagree. Perspective of what a budget build is, and thr minimum to check, crank bearings and cam bearings, my view was based on the wear on the cam. And ran without oil pump working. I have seen engines run and work with a rod knock for a long time. Keep us posted on this engine. After 10,000 miles. I'm not here to disprove. A budget build in my mind, is minimum hone, re ring and bearing check.

    • @BoneyardRevivals
      @BoneyardRevivals  Місяць тому

      @ The oil pump always worked. I don’t understand where the notion of it never working came from. Which is why I feel there was not an attention to detail. And I like I said, I might not have shown it in the video but I actually looked at the entire bottom end. I’ve been in enough of these to know if it will last or not. I guess moving forward I need to do a better job at showing the bottom end so we all are on the same page with what’s going on.
      I appreciate your comment, concern and advice. I like it when you guys keep me on my toes so I can learn where I can get better with my content and my builds!

    Single pattern cam it's all show and no go a real horsepower is made by dual pattern split duration cam 916 rockers would be put the exhaust side because if you put one six rockers on the exhaust side it makes the exhaust lift more which holds the house open longer which makes Federation longer so it makes it get rid of the exhaust gases when you do that the Biltmore power because it's all remember that an engine giant air pump and if you can make that are pump more efficient you make more power at lower RPM
