    Aaron is a murderer. He is actually my drum teacher and he's a beast. He can play with or without triggers super fast. He can hit hard doubles without triggers. He's very well trained and is a great teacher and player. He plays now for Faceless and Interloper after leaving ROS, where Mike Caputo, another great drummer, took over his spot.

      @@hazardeur true but you put massive downward pressure on the pedals, which on something like wood or concrete, slides all over the place. Depending on how you do your doubles, but one of the ways a lot of people do them is with pressure from the hip flexors, which is why you'll see a lot of people lean into it. The other way of doing it isn't as bad for sliding but is much harder to learn/do consistently as its about finding a sweet spot in the rebound and controlling it. Watch Francesco Paoli for the former and John Longstreth for the latter

    I must admit to always having focused on the guitar in Rings of Saturn - perhaps because it's such a unique/distinct sound, or because Lucas Mann is so talked about. Now I can only say, hot dang, that is some good hitting of the sticks on the drums.

    All I can say is, triggers makes it more easier to find out your mistakes. So triggers are for the precise players, which for the better part has become a necessity in fast technical metal.

      the only fair criticism of triggers is volume normalization and smoothing across strokes

    • @bultronlagore4932
      @bultronlagore4932 3 роки тому +6

      Exactly!! It’s funny hearing people say “Triggers are cheating and that’s how they play so fast.” 🤦‍♂️!! I’ve argued with a few morons who had this notion stuck in there head. They are ONLY for sound volume purposes and the drummer still has to play at speed and time. If they mess up then you will definitely hear the mistake. Sounds like popcorn popping out of time. Great Comment my friend! Seems we have actual knowledgeable people in this Comment Section.

      You guys don't realize triggers convert the hits to midi notes which can and are usually edited or quantized in software. Not saying that's happening in this particularl example.

    What I really like about Aaron is that he is one of those guys who takes away peoples "I don't have the gear to play like that" excuses. He is dishing out doubles at breakneck speed on a pearl eliminator like it's nothing. Like with Gene Hoglan and his rickety old Camco pedals 🤣

    The big thing with triggers in metal is some players have adapted a technique of turning up the trigger sensitivity to the max and basically tapping, so there’s no effort to playing, but those few couldn’t play without triggers if their lives depended on it. The majority of current metal drummers using triggers do so because with thunderous bass and usually 2 guitars with crushing distortion, the kick gets muddied in the mix...so the triggers clean it up. Nothing wrong with that. Guys like Alex Rudinger use a module from 2Box and his trigger is actually sampled from his own kick drums.

      I think I just figured out how to explain triggers to people. Take acoustic guitars for example. You can add some bits to them and make them semi-acoustic, so you can amplify the sound, or add effects. That same principle applies to triggers, they're just how you make semi-acoustic drums.

    • @alexandermcgregor9040
      @alexandermcgregor9040 2 роки тому

      @@grimecube That analogy does not hold, youre not amplifying the sound of a drum when you trigger yore replacing the whole sound with a whole other sound. Its not real and removes the need to be dynamic and consistant. Hence seeing all these metal drumers barley hitting bass drums and snares yet getying loud perfect rim shots or perfectly even bass volume. Its lame

    Rings of Saturn have gotten a lotta flak from critics saying their music is programmed ,fake , drums are triggered..etc etc..I honestly don't care what they think, I personally enjoy their albums.
    A lotta people say the live drums are sloppy compared to the studio versions leading a lot of people to speculate triggers were use in studio to record via MIDI and a lot of shine was added via editing each note to sound just right....I dunno enough to comment on that tho.

He is no longer with Rings of 🪐 and was replaced with a beast of a drummer known as “Lord Marco” who I would definitely check out if you’ve never heard that guy play. The man is a Lord of Drumming. To the channel owner: “Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together of these amazing drummers of genres of music that are not very popular to most.” People of course are not going like the sound of Technical Death Metal, Technical Deathcore, etc but it should atleast be respected for the skill needed to perform this music. Death Metal is perceived a lot like Jazz music was by mainstream society when it made its first appearance because it was so different sounding/off time signatures. Anyways, thanks again and take care all!

    In relation to 7:20, just before you paused at that first gravity blast, there is a blast beat pattern where his hands alternate on the snare. You can clearly see he flubs the snare hits at the end of the blast beat before going into gravity blast, but it sounds continuous and normal. Also the dude is getting the fullest snare tone from lifting his sticks like 2 inches off the head during blasts, while having the lightest grip on his sticks I've maybe ever seen in metal.

    Triggering is not necessarily a bad thing in this genre because there are very few drummers who can play in excess of 220BPM without kick trickers and define the notes perfectly every time, regardless of technique. It's mainly for consistency sake.
    Triggers still have to be activated so the beater still has to hit the skin and so in most cases the drummer is clearly able to hit this speed, this is why it's always more impressive live than a studio recording where no post editing can take place.
    This video clearly has some post edit processing to remove minor issues but to claim Aaron isn't an insane drummer because of some cleanup would be laughable at best.
    As for another drummer to checkout I would reccomend John Longstreath "All Things Dead" for more metal or for an insane Gospel Drummer check out this video From Eric Moore ua-cam.com/video/EcB-mv8Vo84/v-deo.html

    My only critique is that great metal drummers tend to sound the same (to ME, obviously), or lack a certain personality. With jazz, you can hear and FEEL, each players personality. Again, I consider them equally high peaks of their respective mountains in drumming.

    He has the bass drum stuffed and he has a trigger on it. All the other percussion is mic’d. You can’t play past a certain speed on the bass drum without using triggers. The acoustic notes just don’t respond on a 22 inch drum past a certain tempo. It’s not cheating because you still have to move the peddle beaters at the same tempo and that guy has beautiful clean 32nd note doubles. Speed metal drumming it’s not my cup of tea, but I do respect the technical skill and concentration required to achieve it. I like that this guy keeps it to a four piece set. Thanks for the video

    I don't see a huge problem with triggers on kicks if you're looking at sound output instead of dynamics. I think that's how he generates such a mean sound with his (really awesome) heel-toe technique for that gatling gun sound. The triggers will still initiate sound when prompted, as far as my own understanding goes, so in theory it should just enhance what would otherwise be quieter sounds, but still be playing what you play.

I'm guessing that the wired box is perhaps a bass drum sounding trigger that makes the bass hits sound a lot louder while he lightly taps with the double kick? He might also have a switch to speed up the double bass pedal tempo (there are triple & quad pedals that exist, this can also be done electronically through triggers as well). It just doesn't look like his feet are swinging fast enough on some of the more extreme double bass pedal sections, so there might be some sort of tempo trigger, although I might be wrong on this assumption, and that's not to take anything away from this dude because I could never drum to this technically extreme metal, so mad props to him.

    • @MikeCaputo
      @MikeCaputo 3 роки тому

      The box in front of his left pedal is just to stop the left pedal from sliding away from him. Triggers just play a sample when you hit the drum instead of using a microphone for the drum. It makes the sound more crisp, reliable, and able to cut through the mix better (especially at really high speeds where it would just turn into mud). If you weren't using triggers, I don't care what technique you're using, if you're playing over 215-220bpm it just turns into a rumble and it will get lost in the mix.

    triggering is pretty much mandatory in these styles of music especially on the bass drums. you wouldnt be able to hear it very well if at all. especially live. another member of this band Lucas Mann has taken a lot of sh-t over the years. been accused of not playing or speeding his tracks up because he plays so fast. hes made videos of himself playing with clocks scattered around to prove hes actually playing the music.

  • @dmeemd7787

    kicks are triggered, for sure, (common is kicks and snare - laser triggers can allow rim shots and regular snare hits, etc.) ...so trust your ears, they are probably right 😊 I am indifferent, depends on what you are trying to accomplish...and you can REALLY make your album LOUD and clean since its using samples (already compressed vs mics, etc.) and they (obviously) make stuff consistent, like dynamics and so on... there are those that have everything on their kit triggered and use one, both or none, depending on what they want to do (already said that, lol,, oh well 😂😋) also, triggering helps with making a distinct 'sound' for a band...i mean, if you heard other songs, you would go, yup that's Rings or this is...etc. some people call it 'cheating' some don't -- people get borderline or full-on religious about what is and isn't the 'right' way -- so find your rabbit holes aaand go!! just remember to shower, brush teeth, take vitamins, because (these) rabbit holes are long and winding, LoL 😁😋😋😊😊
    Love the channel! Great stuff across the entire thing (said it before and will keep saying it) ...because good is good! 😊
    Now there are some bands that are accused of using software I don't and there are bands that they use software and claim that they don't.. but I am not going to be the one to name any band names or even start a rumor mill or add to one. But what I CAN do is go by drummers that I have seen live at smaller venues, like The afaceless where Aaron in this video played for when they did the entire Planetary Duality album tour... Job For a Cowboy's drummer, All That Remains, Veil of Maya, Deicide, Nile (Nile...f**k yeah, lol) and so on.. (where you can stand there on the side and watch them play) 🤘🏻 ...legit all day long :)

    I dont know how true it is but a couple years back this band was involved in some controversy that they couldn't physically play their parts at speed (being it was all sped up or studio trickery). From my memory, I think it was about the guitarist. However, I have been tricked in the past thinking a musician wasnt doing what I heard but then seeing they that they actually could do it and it changed my mind. I dont know with this band. They have been called out once already publicly. So who knows.

    • @Snake3004
      @Snake3004 3 роки тому

      Yeah, it was about the guitarist, Lucan Mann (also one of the founding members of this band) but he actually made a video about it and debunked all of it. The UA-camr Jared Dines said he can't play the guitar at that speed, he even said he played "too perfect" (which is more of a compliment, lol) but he was wrong at the end and apologized. All of the band members can play those instruments and songs live as good as on the CDs.
