He's a Legend yes, but everything that's mainstream is trash and has been for years. I remember back in the first half of the 10's when both mainstream art and indie art was good quality. Now mainstream has utterly gone to shit and only indie art still has high quality products here and there. Its like the entire mainstream art world was taken over by people with no talent...hmmm...perhaps for ideological reasons?
@@StarboyXL9 It's called corporatization. It's not an ideological cause as you are suggesting. The majority of major productions these days are owned by major corporations not small or medium sized studios movies like back in those days. Corporations are the major producers in hollywood now and the result is that rather then movies needing heart and sole necessarily behind them in order for the ideas to be brought to fruition it is instead about investors trying to find the most easily successful projects to cash in and make money. It's why you get so many remakes because theoretically and in a boardroom it makes sense but in reality pulling off a good reboot/remake takes time and dedication to understand the original product. The problem with Hollywood isn't ideology it's that it's all become apart of a small group of corporations like disney and Warner Brothers who only care about making money first and are afraid to try anything. Indy movies need to be unique and bring interesting ideas to succeed, while major productions have marketing campaigns and long standing franchises to deal with this is why monopolies are bad for innovation they don't need to change to make money they can rely on established products.
Agreed. React content isn't really my thing as I have somewhat of a distaste for it, but I always make an exception for Astartes. It's an excuse for me to watch it again and again as others praise its many stellar qualities, and on rare occasion give some insights into the more subtle details.
I think they do understand, they just don't care, our interesets doesn't allign with they're profits and winnings so they do what they want.@@ChompStudio
Astartes is one of those projects that makes you question any skill you have. One dude created maybe *the* best video experience in the Warhammer universe. Just the way this scene plays out is an absolute masterpiece of action film-making. Every single scene tells you more and more about the brutal, cold efficiency of a Space Marine. Every location tells a story by its set dressing alone. 11/10. That this dude isn't leading a team of animators, creating a Warhammer series by now is criminal.
I thought he was doing exactly that? idk if he's still there, but GW hired him to do projects for WarhammerTV. That's why he stopped making his follow up videos and stuff. It was one of the silver linings when they did their big crackdown on fan content a few years back (when we also lost Emperor TTS)
I want to like this comment twice! Exactly my thoughts! There is so much happening in each shot that if you watch it 50 times, you'll discover something new each time! GW is a clown factory for not making Syama the boss of cinematics!
The orb said "No escape. I have failed. We have all failed. The Astartes defy our touch. You must return! Break your seal! We'll never survive. You must take them!" And then the Inquisitor says "Recall them immediately!" then the Inquisitor gets possessed. Had they not put him down, he would have been the epicenter of a nuclear sized explosion of psychic energy, killing everyone and ripping the ship apart.
@Ajvt-ux4ec Everyone on the ship being skinned, r*ped, driven insane, t*rturned, and eaten alive in no particular order. And the ship itself could have gotten corrupted. The Warp doesn't play.
What that series has done superb is showing professionals. No fancy heraldry, no absent helmets, no melee combat just for the sake of it, no glory hogging, no fancy rare weapons, no separation of "main protagonist and expendable extras". And the opposition is also acting professionally, preparing killzones, using antimateriel rifles, magnetic mines and all they can.
What I love about this is just how Relentless the Space Marines are. They don't slow down, they don't stop, the keep coming. Even with the two Psykers they were fighting, as soon as he's released from their grip he doesn't pause, no sense of relief from being released, just stabs him, rips the spinal column out, and then straight back on the job.
"Relentless" is certainly the word that springs to mind when they advance towards that orb. Every time it sends out a massive shock wave, the Space Marines just brace themselves and ... "snarl" it off. No pausing, no resting, just a little tilt of the head and keep moving forward towards the problem. You can almost see the dirty look the Marine gives the thing at 8:33. No matter that they have no idea what this thing is or how dangerous it is, it's delaying them from doing their jobs and serving their Emperor.
Also back on the main ship when the White Knights showed no hesitation or remorse to killing a feared inquisitor the second the realized he was possessed; they didn't try to restrain him or give him any time to respond, which shows how vigilant and ruthless they are when fighting beings from the warp.
That's not relentless, that's basic survival instinct and VERY good training. If you pause, you die. That's not even implants or anything, that's literary can be achieved only solely by training.
Each bullet is basically a micro rocket propelled grenade that explodes when it enters the body of the target. That's why they hit so hard and explode.
@@caalsigobolthuns and rifles are 75mm calibre, ever seen a 75mm sherman tank gun from ww2? Yeah its that big AND propelled by rockets, and also they have a very dense tip which gave bolt rounds immense piercing power AND explosive charged, so its like APHE on rockets and steroids
In the original, the music had big beats hit and he timed their teleport animations to sync to those beats, so the music had a BOOM BOOM BOOM and you could see the flashes as they teleported in right on those beats.
19:37 - This is where the sound design changes hurt the new version the most. In the original there is a drum beat and flash for each of the rest of his team as they teleport in.
@@theaureliasys6362 Yeah, at the very end of the scene if you watch the little platforms like the one the Sergeant stands up on in the center of each there's a flash of light.
One of my favorite moments was when the Sergeant rips out the spine augment, and it's lit and framed in such a way that it reminds you that Astartes are *Terror* Troops. One doesn't even have to be a Night Lord to be properly horrific.
Just so you know, at the end where you said "This guy must be a battle hardened soldier". You can see his years of service on the service studs above his left eye. The gold mark was his century (100 yr.) stud. And the 2 silver ones were 50 Years each. So, This marine has been serving somewhere between 200-250 years.
@@andrew5207 it's chapter specific. some chapters will have multiple gold ones, some don't, some silver studs are only worth 10 or 50 yrs in the less "survivable" chapters (although much more rare). I couldn't answer that question without knowing about the chapters history in question, and this looks like a custom one. But, every chapter is different. This is the "general" meaning for service studs.
@@andrew5207 The first gold stud may represent this marine's first century of service which is impressive and deserving of a gold service stud. The two silver studs may represent two periods of possibly 50 years of service for each stud, or less, we don't know. Both of those silver studs may represent 10 years of service and are less important than the first hundred since surviving a century in the 40k galaxy is an impressive feat. Of course, what service studs represent varies by chapter and some chapters don't have them which is good for Dante of the Blood Angels since he has been a Space Marine for more than a thousand years and does not need service studs to remind him of that fact.
@@Zeigabibblez Now the owners of the rights to the Warhammer franchise(GW) killed this series from Sayama. They bought his under threat of legal action. Fuck GW!
First time I've ever heard this new music. Missing so much of the impact from the original. The music from the origin was so much more 'moody' and 'heavy'. Hard to describe.
Some of the lighting is changed in the new one too. Goodness knows why, but seriously the original looks and sounds better. GW are stupid for what they've done
Removing a bunch of frames and molesting half of the remainder with motion blur didn't help either. It also seemed to be sped up quite a bit, I'm not sure if it was some half arsed attempt to make the marines look faster but it completely ruined the deliberate, relentless feel of the original. Especially with the sound changes. They seemed determined to leave their mark on every aspect of it so we couldn't forget for a moment that GW was responsible for the video, and therefor ruining it in the process. So mission accomplished I guess? It certainly looks more like the crap they put out, although on the higher end admittedly. One thing that did catch my eye was that they made it easier to see the marine's optics after his lens cracked which was interesting to see, but I'm not sure if it was an overall improvement and was probably just due to the increased brightness. I think this is the first time I've seen this version all the way through, it's certainly the last.@@weediestbroom
The original soundtrack came from the movie Dredd(2012), which is why they swapped it to avoid copyright directly. It is understandable it is not as good since it was geared toward those soundtracks.
Another interesting fact: the helmets they wear have communications inside of them, so that they can communicate silently and they cancel the noise of most explosions. For the scene with the guy chanting before getting punched, he was SCREAMING those chants at above human levels to be heard that well through the mask.
They shall be my finest warriors, these men who give themselves to me. Like clay I shall mould them and in the furnace of war forge them. They will be of iron will and steely muscle. In great armour shall I clad them and with the mightiest guns will they be armed. They will be untouched by plague or disease, no sickness will blight them. They will have tactics, strategies and machines such that no foe can best them in battle. They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines and they shall know no fear.
I wish it was a 3-hour long feature film. This video introduced me to the Warhammer 40k universe, and now I've been reading the books, diving into the lore. It's massive, and incredible. Wish I found out about 40k sooner.

@@aikighost At the very start, they did have female space marines. No one bought them. So the lore developed with them just being male. Which is good, because if they didn't, we likely would not have gotten the Sisters of Battle.

Games Workshop made it worse. They should have kept it the way it was made. The only changes that were needed were in merging the 5 separate parts into a whole.
The Astartes project is based off of the Warhammer: 40,000 (or 40k for short) universe. The Astartes (or Space Marines) are bio-engineered super warriors that serve and protect The Imperium of Man, a vast galaxy spanning human empire 40,000 years in the future. In this video, the astartes of this specific faction were hunting down the leaders of a rebellion against the Imperium. What they found was that the rebels were under the control of an unknown, psychic alien species (the spheres). The guy in the red coat was something called a psyker, a powerful psychic individual who was able to listen in on the telepathic conversations of the spheres. The red coat with the skull in the middle of the capitol "I" meant that he was also a member of the God-Emperor's Holy Inquisition, the most powerful organization within the Imperium. He became possessed when he lost focus to warn the Astartes about what he had heard and said "Withdraw them immediately!" . In case you're wondering what the spheres said to each other, here it is: Sphere 1: "Brother, I have failed." Sphere 2: "We have all failed." Sphere 1: "The Astartes deny our touch." Sphere 2: "You must return, break your seal" Sphere 1: "Impossible! We will never survive" Sphere 2: "You must. Take them!" The Warhammer 40k universe is VAST and deep with practically mountains of lore. It is arguably the greatest sci-fi universe ever created. You guys will not be disappointed in learning more about it. Welcome to the rabbit hole, brothers. Another thing some people also miss, at the end when he's standing on the pillars, in the distance when you see all the giant skeletons, you can see other flashes of lights of the other marines teleport in the same area as the one we saw
@@ChompStudio To add to the above, even though the spheres seem extremely powerful here, it seems they are afraid of doing the teleporting trick. They probably need to go into something called the warp, which is infested with things even worse. When you see the light thing with tendrils suddenly get enveloped in a black cloud after they got sucked in, that was probably a warp creature attacking the sphere that had sucked the marines in.
@@ragerancher If you need a simple explanation of the warp, it's basically a hell dimension except in the middle of a four way civil war conducted by beings so powerful that if they ever turned their full attention on mankind we'd be doomed. Fortunately for humanity they are much more interested in each other than humanity at this moment, which doesn't stop some of their more belligerent underlings ( included corrupted space marines, like the guys here only a lot more kill everything that moves ) from occasionally invade from the warp. Also all FTL travel in the imperium has to go through the warp. Basically imagine if warp travel from Star Trek opened a portal to hell, and people still voluntarily used it.
It even speaks volumes of the storytelling ability without a single word being properly heard. We aren't in the Space Marines' helmets, we aren't under the Inquisitor's visor. They speak normal volumes and they speak into vox sets. They hear each other and they communicate. We just can't hear them, because we're not on their net.
So when they got it on official site they changed some music due to copyright I guess. I think you can really feel the difference of the music at 10:17, if you re-watch it on UA-cam the original's version of Astartes music hits so much harder and has so much to offer at least in that scene. At the end as well, sounds horrifying in a good way, but original's sound is awesome as well.
Ahhh bummer! Ill have to find it. I know the original creator took down the video...Im sure it had something to do with Warhammer picking it up. Either way....this video totally pumps me up!
This appears incomplete. The wide shot of the pulse pistol shooting through the smoke in corridor is mirrored from original and they skip the handoff of the distributing of the inhibitors that the marines plunge into the orb. That latter shot has had high praise from other animators due to the technicality of the object interactions. Music in original is better and the Warhammer logo at the beginning was not part of the original.
5:15 is probably my favorite part with regards to animation detail. When the psyker sends that wave of energy towards the marine, you can see the rounds from his bolter ricochet off of the wave as it approaches. Such incredible attention to detail that really just gives it the **chef's kiss**
There are so many tiny details that greatly increase the immersion. I've probably seen this a few dozen times and have never noticed the ricochets until seeing your comment. My favorite little detail was always the glowing impacts on the Sergeant's armor when he takes cover to throw the grenade and how the battle damage remains visible on his armor throughout the rest of the animation.
3:20 The way the marine leans a bit more to the right on a step just before the next round so when it impacts his shoulder it rights him. Rather than having to correct from the impact he sets it up so that the force of the impact corrects his gait.
10:59 - That was a tame response to a Sanctioned Psyker showing signs of possession! They can become living gateways for daemons from the Warp, etc. One cool thing is the first spoken word is "Astartes" from the orb, then the muffled communication between the orbs (as has been spelled out in another comment), and then the Psyker SHOUTS "RECALL THEM IMMEDIATELY!" You don't hear the dialogue is because all of their helmets are using helm comms and they're insulated with internal air. Then the chanting that the Psyker begins doing is louder than he can do voluntarily. Such a great detail there to show juuuust how much it sucks to get possessed.
12:24 I think this is something from the advanced genealogy as well. that blood is clotting instantly. This is one of their traits, so they don't bleed out. The blood clots as soon as it leaves the body. I think I got that right anyway. You should research how they're made and their traits, it's really interesting stuff.
@@jeggiejegmeister8720 Larriman cells i think instant clotting on exposure to air outside the body, seals the wound instantly to prevent bleeding out and prevent infection, allows maximum combat potential, and keeps the marine in the fight.
So, fun fact about the Warhammer universe. The reason the soldiers killed by the space marines explode is because, in lore the use something called a bolter. The weapon fires a round roughly the size of a soda can that then explodes once embedding in a target to cause the maximum damage.
@@ChompStudio Late to the party _but_ some of them were fan chapters as thanks to his top patrons (modern GW isn't very, fan friendly) so that was likely why the scene was cut. The creator also had a thank you message to the fans and fellow UA-camrs who helped bring attention to his channel being hacked (and supposedly "sold"). It seems from what you're saying a lot of the notable bits that mark the series as being on UA-cam were removed when the series was put on GW's site.
18:43 - i have watched astartes probably 100+ times now and i havent even noticed those details holy shit. i thought those were small pillars that were kinda near the space marine, but now that ive noticed it it shows how huge this landscape is.
Same. Until he pointed that out I had no idea. The scale opens up after he points that out and they seem utterly insignificant all of a sudden. Amazing.
@@ChompStudiothat’s why they never audibly speak. And when the guy got possessed (the dude who got punched out and double tapped) you could hear his muffled SHOUTS. Imagine how loud it would be for the marines who were in a vox link with him.
The astartes bolter in this case the godwyn pattern fires a .75 calibre rocket assisted mass reactive shell designed to penetrate targets and then explode (essentially its a gun that fires rocket propelled grenades)other types of bolt guns exist for normal humans and for specialised use by space marine units like the deathwatch, grey knights etc
@@ChompStudio What makes it especially great is just how much the creator gets right, lore wise. Most 40k games and media tend to generalize a lot of stuff, or forgot/gloss over things, but this guy get's the lore spot on. The bolter rounds are a perfect example of this, a lot of times they're treated as just large caliber rounds, but in this he treats them as rockets, and shows us clearly when they hit the shields. You can actually see that they're still trying to propel themselves as they hit the tk barrier and stop dead, then a few seconds later, they all explode as they reach the end of their fuse time. Anyone else would probably have just had them all explode upon impact and be done with. It's these kinds of touches that really show off how much care and attention was put into the whole production, and there's tons of things like this throughout. If you know 40k, you pick up on new things every time you see it.
The most impressive thing is not even the visuals, it's the sound design. Nothing brings more life to a boltor than that deep "BOOM BOOM" sound. It's phantastic
The level of detail is immense. Even the walls covered in paper prayers and wards for the thing in that room. And watch the stone towers closely at the end, his fellow Marines jump to each one as well.
You can't imagine the lvl of details until you saw videos about it At 4:38 when he shoots his gun you've got a "stop" in the trigger meaning that he starts pushing the hammer of the gun There is their name on the side of their armour, only the lense broke at 5:40, etc etc ... masterpiece
Another detail is how the bullets from the Bolter arc away from the psy attack while the Space Marine was unloading his entire magazine into one of the two enemy psykers. The attention to detail to every scene is phenomenal.
My favorite little detail is when Beakie finishes off the Inquisitor(dude in the red hood). The bolter round's explosions flutters out the Captain's cape progressively with each shot. I've watched this animation so many times and there is always something new to find.
Ive watched this multiple times and LOVE it. And even then the small teleports at the end i only noticed because you pointed it out. The amount of detail is AMAZING
Camera work is amazing throughout - especially the way he uses it to convey weight. Especially at the beginning when the Marines are stepping into the landing craft, the viewer can feel it. Great use of sound design, camera placement and shudder, and great lighting.
One of my favourite details of this whole masterpiece is during the scene where the Inquisitorial Agent listens in on the conversation between the orbs. They are all communicating btw, they're just doing it over their helmet comms. You hear him yelling (although muffled) "Get them out of there, immediately!", an information the Captain relays to the other Marine who takes off running. And when the Agent gets possessed by the orb, those noises he makes, through his helmet? He must be screaming at the top of his lungs. A quick aside, when someone gets possessed like that, punching him in the face won't make much of a difference. The several shots into him while he's down are not a precaution, but entirely warranted. Anyway. Every single shot sends out a little shockwave that sends the Captains cape flying just that little bit more. Just... the attention to detail is amazing.
The original ending audio was actually synched with a drum beat for marines 3+4 dropping back out of the warp onto the pillars. With the updated audio there is no anchor, so more likely to miss their entry.
I've seen this animation dozens of times by now, and yet I've never noticed his other squad members showing up at the end there. Thanks for such an in depth analysis, it was an enjoyable watch!
I´ve seen Astartes like 5 or 6 times, but i´ve never noticed his squad getting teleported on the other pillars until you showed it lol. That´s awesome. It really changes the size of everything.
@@superbarnie I mean it makes sense right. They are 5 Marines. We see one getting teleported on the Pillar in close view. Then we see 3 more flashes and little "somethings" appearing. The last marine teleported maybe earlier or out of view. And if your look really close you see something/ someone appearing. Just like the Marine we follow.
@@Ddarth_sidious yea true. It’s so shitty they probably hired him just so he couldn’t make more….Fans make better content than the actual group that owns the material.
Yea, Death of Hope is still the best WH fan made stuff ever. It's not as "polished" as Astartes, but the grimdark sense of WH universe is perfectly captured there. I love all the visuals of the Marines or that fricking Terminator there, mind-blowingly good.
Oh man, I've watched the Astartes clips multiple times now, but never noticed what this guy points out happening at the end - that there are other little blips of people/Astartes/xenos/something teleporting in atop those pillars in the distance. So cool.
13:00 is says Breakdown Baldur's Gate 3? Also it cut out the one spot where they are handing the little pokey things to each other just before putting them in the Orb Relic Warp thing. Not sure if it was just me (I don't believe it was) but I noticed the webcam kept smooth while the Astartes animation kept going lower framerate, not sure if you were watching it like that. Also Warhammer TV lol that tanked. They cut out the ending part too where it shows an Astartes and a Leemon Russ tank
There is a trailer for Astartes 2 on UA-cam, but its only 16 seconds and most likely will never come out. But Syama Pedersen does wonderful work! If you want more Warhammer 40k stuff, personally I think the intro cinematic for the game Dark Tide is pretty good!
@ChompStudio Most likely because the creator had been planning it before he was picked up by games workshop officially, but games workshop has differing plans so we have no reason to believe it's still coming.
@@glockenspiel604 Hes been involved in many of the GW animation projects. The problem is GW can no longer credit the people who work for them because people literally harass the creators into quitting for being a "traitor" who wants to be paid for his labor and make canonical content.
@nullakjg767 I don't think he's a traitor for wanting to get paid but he'd be a traitor for joining the very people oppressing the other fan artists just like him. I don't blame him though, ultimately they're all just implicated on the whole move on sh*tting on GW for being an ass. Remember we lost TTS and others like it. Until that wound heals and we see improvement and penance from GW then those that work for them will likely get hated on as well. GW held them at metaphorical gunpoint with the contract of "Either join us or never talk or create fan art/videos of warhammer again." Again not blaming the artists, just saying the hate is obvious when you join a company suffering backlash.
It's funny that you'd mention at the end how the other space marines teleporting in might be a little detail for rewatchers; there's plenty of those in this animation: we get a second of IR vision from the space marines' perspective right after they board, the autocannon guy in the hallway has a spotter with him, the floating spines you saw. I've rewatched this animation so many times, and I didn't even notice you can see the psyker's shield bubble for a second when the marines open fire. That said, GW seems to have removed one little section where they pass the knives around right before they stab the orb, I wonder why.
Great works of art have depth and there's always something that catches your attention every time you see/read/listen to a great piece. I have been involved with Warhammer 40k for over twenty-two years now in one capacity or another and I have watched the Astartes project a multitude of times as I show it to others or watch reaction videos such as this one. I never even noticed the squadmates teleporting in until you pointed it out. Thanks for making it another great watch through.
To your critique about the ending with the other marines being teleported in while your eye is actually being drawn to the landscape up above, I do tend to agree with you. This version is slightly different from the original as the original had different music with bass hits when each guy was teleported in. However, even when I watched that version originally I didn’t notice it at first because I was also taking in the landscape and how detailed and megalithic it feels. It wasn’t until I got in the comments that I saw it mentioned and had to catch it on a rewatch where I noticed that the drum hits of the music coincided with each teleport. That all being said, this genuinely feels like an opening sequence of a movie. We get introduced to this squad and as we go through we just have more and more questions. If this was a movie then I’d assume it would pick up with this squad in the new area trying to figure out what those orbs were and what the orbs were trying to do, where they are now, and how they’re going to get back to where they came from. Other questions are things like who were the guys with the psychic powers and what were they doing with the orbs, what’s that giant human-like thing they were in the process of building, what was their goal, etc… Overall this is just an excellent setup and intro for the beginning of a movie and I think most who’ve seen it would agree with me. I’m not big into 40k, I only know the basics about the universe and lore, but I’d totally watch a feature length movie built off of this as long as the kept the guy who created it at the helm because he clearly has an exceptional understanding of the 40k universe, and how to tell a story in it. I don’t think it would work as well if it were live action either. Hopefully GE has got him running his own team creating something big because as far as I’m aware nothing else like this has come out since they hired him. If they don’t then they’re wasting an incredible talent and potential gold mine. I know animated films take a long time to make, and it took him 4 years to make this by himself, so I could understand it taking many years to make a full movie even with a full team to back him. Either way, what he created is a masterpiece and I’m glad he and it are getting the credit they deserve.
10:47: That psyker became a daemonhost. A mortal fused with a powerful daemon. That's why they immediately and brutally murked him, cause if you don't catch that sort of thing early, who knows how strong the resulting daemon could be? Especially considering how strong these Orb entities seem to be, it could have been a Greater Daemon which would have ripped the whole ship apart, as good as these Astartes are, if that guy was taken over by something like a Lord of Change or other high ranking Tzeentchian demon (cause this is almost certainly some Tzeentch shit) there would have been very little they could have done about it. Best to kill him before the takeover is completed, and make damn sure he's dead.
The orbs are a xeno species. Very powerful and highly advanced xeno psykers. It’s not chaos. Those orbs protect them from warp entities. Hence when the marines breached the one orb, you see the thing in the middle get jumped on by some massive black entity. That was the alien getting taken out by a daemon.
The level of detail is absolutely bonkers. If you look closely, when the caped champion marine punches the inquisitor's skull into mist, and the Beaky Boi fills the remains with bolter rounds, each explosion billows the cape. All that work for less than a second of footage? Absolutely unparalleled artistry.
The plasma shot through the smoke, and the knife kills on the psykers... are absolutely the two most awesome shots ive seen in almost any piece of action
A bit of 40K lore. The weapons that the Space Marines (Adeptus Astartes) are firing is called a Boltgun or Bolter. This is essentially a rapid fire miniature missile launcher. With every round having a mass sensitive detonator in the tip. So it hits it's target, then BOOM!
the closest we have to a Boltgun is the Gyrojet pistol. Take that cartridge, make it .75 calibre, fill it with explosive filler, put a Mass Inertial Fuse in the tip, and ye got your Astartes Grade Bolt... shrink it to .65 for Human Grade, or expand it to .97 and you've got a bolt for an Astartes grade Heavy Bolter...
What I like about the lighting is how much it reminds of painting Space Marines (the super soldiers). They are definitely the miniatures I paint the most, and when I apply highlights I keep it pretty simple and imagine there is a single light source directly above each model. This saves me time while also really accentuates the prominent features of the armour, especially the helmet. I get the feeling that the animator has spent even more time staring at plastic than me haha
wow, you were able to really understand and pick things up quick. from the orbs communicating to each other, the dialogue they had, the actual analysis of the camera and lighting work, and the teleporting to another world, bravo
18:40 I've watched the original video so many times and also seen many reaction videos about it and to me you are the first one that noticed these little teleport effects. Great eye for details man, respect! :)
I’ve seen Astarte‘s so many times and I love it but I can’t help but get excited when someone watches it for the first time. I am literally whispering to myself “you don’t even know it gets so much better!!!” 😂😅
If you go Really in depth with these 5 shorts, you get mind blown by the level of details and attention he'd put into, the Sky wasn't even a limit. 99/100 for Syama Pederson of NZ.
3:51 When you mentioned that they’re super soldiers, they’re super soldiers in every possible sense of the word. Extra organs, armour that is neurally linked and the most extreme training regimen of any army ever. They’re genetically engineered to be the perfect killing machines.
Man, every time I find something new from ASTARTES. It’s really cool seeing that even people new to Warhammer 40K can clearly Identify what’s going on. You pointed out several things things that I haven’t noticed even when I’ve watched this at least a dozen times like when the Psykers’ use their energy shield. Also thanks for identifying how the creator made the background for the final scene. I always wondered how he did it. Map painting seems like a really cool animation technique for scenes like this.
I'm still finding new things, and all the viewers in the comments have pointed out Easter eggs that I would have never seen. This animation just keeps giving every viewing! Thanks for stopping by!
I really enjoyed watching your reactions. I just discovered this masterpiece a few days ago and I can't stop watching. It gets better each time. What an accomplishment!
Orb 1: "I have failed." Orb 2: "Brother...we have all failed. The Astartes deny our touch. You must return. Break your seal." Orb 1: "Impossible. We will never survive." Orb 2: "You must. Take them." Inquisitor (dude praying) breaks concentration and tells the captain?: "Recall them immediately!"
another youtuber with 40k animation I recommend is Sodaz sadly he deleted his OG videos due to Games Workshops copyright against fan animations. It was reuploaded on another channel called SmokeTinyTom. The 3 videos I think you should check out are Deathkorps of Krieg,Siege and Black templars. And maybe check out Sodaz other animations like Halo and his current Wip Fallout. It's not on the exact same level of Astartes but it is still a one man project.
A bit late to comment, but I just had to say something 😭. I absolutely love when the first space marine starts charging the psykes with the knife. You can feel the speed and absolute monstrous weight of him as he’s running. And the lack of dialogue makes it so much more “professional” for the lack of a better word I can’t think of.
From Personal Viewing, to showing others. I've racked up at least 16 different viewings of this series. From watching reaction videos to WH40K players, experts, and chapter masters, I've seen 7. From watching filmmakers, audio/visual designers, and set piece experts, I've seen 5. You are my 5th viewing of this animation from a designer standpoint. But you are the ONLY one to notice the other teleportation/appearance of the entities on the pillars in the midground. You pointed something out I've missed in every other viewing experience; and recognition from other viewers of this animation. Such a subtle detail did not escape your eyes, be it from multiple viewings, to intelligence from past cinema experience. You noticed it. That alone deserves this subscription!
The Spheres are saying: Spiked sphere: Who's here? I have failed. Caged sphere: We have all failed. The Astartes deny our touch. You must return. Break your seal. Spiked sphere: It's impossible. We will never survive. Caged sphere: You must. Take them. Inquisitor: Recall them immediately!
Also, when it shows them all being held by the tentacles after they got sucked in, they are in the warp. You see a flash in the middle, that is the creature being eaten alive by a warp monster and instantly dies. The Astartes are then released from the warp into the world at the very end.
the inquisitor breaking focus to warn the Space Marines was why he got possessed. basically sacrificed himself to the warp to try and warn his brothers.
GW could have blew this wide open to the world if they had of just gotten behind the creator of this and allowed him to make something to release on Netflix like a 5 part mini series following 5 different chapters like this.
Space Marines essentially have impeccable aim, and once they've spotted a target its almost impossible for them to miss the only caveat being the distance their weapons can fire. They are also on average over 7 feet tall outside of their armor and weigh well over 600 lbs. by themselves.
I watched some Blood Angels cinematic GW, I believe, recently released, and man, Chaos Space Marines and Space Marines were firing away at each other like stormtroopers missing everything, not even using cover. I find it sad but amusing that GW still can't depict their own IP accurately according to the lore. Every time I see an Astartes depicted by GW I can't help but compare it to how Astartes are depicted here and feel "nah, not my Astartes!".
@@undefinedvariable8085 Yeah one of the biggest achievements Astartes manages is that it makes Space Marines feel like, well, Space Marines! They're big, they're absurdly fast for their size (gota have that Transhuman Dread in there), they are efficient, accurate, precise. They don't need to bandy about with words, or start monologuing or be over dramatic about shit. They're here to do a job; get in, secure the ship, eliminate all threats, secure the asset. They have a mission and nothing is going to slow them down for even a second. THAT'S how a Space Marine should be.
@@Hawk_of_Battle That's the other thing that annoyed me, the morose and petulant dialogue between each other. "Brother this", "Brother that", "who's the better spacemarine". I can't imagine veterans of untold wars, who have experienced centuries of literal hell in space would be so preoccupied with these kinds of concerns.
I'd pay money to understand how they made that so good! The textures, atmosphere, sounds, lighting, and effects are incredible. It's insane that one person has taken computer generated graphics to a whole new level.
He is clearly a fan and knows his lore very well. I don’t recognize these Astartes but they look great. Love the Psyker getting possessed and very quickly “ freed “ . The little soldiers kinda looked like Death Corp but the big guys , I have no idea . Still absolutely beautiful and wished more was done .
I appreciate the way you managed to review and give your thoughts without turning the original video in to one double its length by stopping it every 5 seconds to talk and rewinding. A skill every other reviewer on the damn platform could benefit from learning.
Always a sublime pleasure seeing professionals react to high-quality works of passion like Astartes. A shame GW decided they'd rather kill passion for their own product instead of let it run free and reap the rewards with no effort. A strange policy to be sure. I'm glad you enjoyed it on a personal and professional level though. Reactions like yours specifically are what helps keep the dream of fan-made passion projects alive.
Another super cool detail that I never see people reacting to Astartes point out is @ 5:19 you can see the bolter shells deflecting off of the psychic shockwave as it pushes towards the space marine!
I love the part in the beginning where the Marine is consecrating/blessing his weapon with those beads - gives a cool visual foreshadowing to a religious/supernatural aspect to what's happening in the 40k universe. Subbed cus your reactions are really good xD - the part where the guy ran into the knife OOOOOOF
it didnt get "picked up" by warhammer, they basically held a gun made from lawyers to his head and told him to hand it over and come work for them, then slapped him with NDAs
Shooting the Psyker (the word used about psychic people in 40k) would not have been enough. He was going through a possession, which in 40k is *BAD* a possession can lead to any number of things, from a single demon forcing its way into our world, to a tear in reality, letting demons and chaos energies flow freely into our realm. Their reaction was, if anything, quite underwhelming and only the bare minimum needed to "secure" the individual from causing more harm with their demise. The psyker was already dead when he was grabbed, he just didn't know it. and indeed, he is battleworn. the studs on his forehead is an indicator of years of service. silver stud means 10 years, gold stud equals 50 or 100 years, depending on the chapter. So this marine has seen either 70, or 120 years of active service on the battlefields of the Emperor.

I was a baby to Warhammer, about one month into my hobbying, and I was told about this animation. This animation nearly made me choose space marines as my first army.
I have watched this dozens of times threw the years, but never did i notice the other members appearing on the pillars! amazing catch! Great breakdown btw, loved your thoughts.
The funny thing is, as much as Space Marines look overpowerd and such, there are still "normal" units in armies of other significant factions, which can just stomp them on their way somewhere important. Creation of Astardes wasn't just a flex of Humans to show off, it was a necessity to even out the odds
Warhammer+ I would say is not worth it and scummy. Before it came out they put a ban on any fans making any animations as it would be a threat to them, they barely released anything during the weekly drops, and you could tell it was done with little passion or had higher ups interfering in it only seeing costs and profits. The stuff they released was nothing compared to the fan animations. It always feels like Games Workshop is at war with their fanbase because anytime we like something they strip it away, chop away what we liked about it, and then try to sell it back to us at a premium price. Also you can tell their views of the community with how the UA-cam page has comments disabled, and apparently any negative comments on other sites are deleted.
This is mostly nonsense. There's a lot of people who don't fully understand the situation yet they try to spread all this hate for games workshop. They only went after people who were making money off their ip. No one ever got sued and there's been fan animations since then. Most of the fan films ended due to the decision of the creators, not because they were forced to. The stuff on warhammer tv is quite good. The creator of helsreach (a must watch!) got hired by gw to make a show and now we have the excellent angels of death. While there's not a ton on warhammer tv, what's there is good. Gw is not some evil conglomerate. They're a small international corporation that was protecting their biggest moneymaker which is 40k.

He is definitely talented!
its not even the visuals that i find most impressive as a professional video editor, its the storytelling and cinematic choices.
I thought he was doing exactly that? idk if he's still there, but GW hired him to do projects for WarhammerTV. That's why he stopped making his follow up videos and stuff. And the opposition is also acting professionally, preparing killzones, using antimateriel rifles, magnetic mines and all they can.
Totally agree! Its pretty amazing!
No kidding!
@@Moosemoose1 They are disgusted by psykers and would look for any excuse to turn him into meaty pulp lol. Most of the time rightly so.

The gold mark was his century (100 yr.) stud. And the 2 silver ones were 50 Years each. So, This marine has been serving somewhere between 200-250 years.
Wow....just crazy!
Why do they do it like that? As in why not have 2 gold ones. Seems like the gold ones would have more meaning if they take twice as long to earn.
Also, marines personal preference probably plays a part as well.

In case you're wondering what the spheres said to each other, here it is:
Sphere 1: "Brother, I have failed."
Sphere 2: "We have all failed."
Sphere 1: "The Astartes deny our touch."
Sphere 2: "You must return, break your seal"
Sphere 1: "Impossible! We will never survive"
Sphere 2: "You must. Take them!"
The Warhammer 40k universe is VAST and deep with practically mountains of lore. It is arguably the greatest sci-fi universe ever created. You guys will not be disappointed in learning more about it. Welcome to the rabbit hole, brothers.

@@ragerancher If you need a simple explanation of the warp, it's basically a hell dimension except in the middle of a four way civil war conducted by beings so powerful that if they ever turned their full attention on mankind we'd be doomed.
3:20 The way the marine leans a bit more to the right on a step just before the next round so when it impacts his shoulder it rights him. Rather than having to correct from the impact he sets it up so that the force of the impact corrects his gait.
Holy shit... I hadn't noticed.. That is truly *chef's kiss*
I never noticed his squadmates getting teleported to the surrounding pillars holy crap you have eagle eye vision! Very insightful commentary.
Such a small but important detail!
HA thats what Im learning!
12:24 I think this is something from the advanced genealogy as well. that blood is clotting instantly. This is one of their traits, so they don't bleed out. The blood clots as soon as it leaves the body. I think I got that right anyway. You should research how they're made and their traits, it's really interesting stuff.
Whoa....love this!
Haemostamen implant.
This is great lore info! Thanks!
I’ve watched multiple reactions to “Astartes”. I’ll watch every single one. It’s too good.
What a great cinematic short film!
In the non-Warhammer owned version, there was a little set of cutscene at the end. Showed the Predator tank and some other chapters
Yes....went back and saw that. Don't know why they removed it???
@@ChompStudio Late to the party _but_ some of them were fan chapters as thanks to his top patrons (modern GW isn't very, fan friendly) so that was likely why the scene was cut.
The creator also had a thank you message to the fans and fellow UA-camrs who helped bring attention to his channel being hacked (and supposedly "sold").
It seems from what you're saying a lot of the notable bits that mark the series as being on UA-cam were removed when the series was put on GW's site.
5:18 I LOVE the little detail of seeing the bullets getting deflected by the oncoming shockwave
18:43 - i have watched astartes probably 100+ times now and i havent even noticed those details holy shit. i thought those were small pillars that were kinda near the space marine, but now that ive noticed it it shows how huge this landscape is.
Such a small but important Easter egg! Very nice!
do you saw the blibs in the end? his comrades got teleported there too.
@@muhschaf yeah thats why i brought it up in the first place. such an amazing easter egg.
Same. Until he pointed that out I had no idea. The scale opens up after he points that out and they seem utterly insignificant all of a sudden. Amazing.
One thing i love in this is that space marines seems to use closed vox to communicate.
Very interesting!

Awesome thanks!
If you know 40k, you pick up on new things every time you see it.
they have other rounds with different capabilities...
same caliber
you will hand me my stalker patter bolter, and then you will stand back and watch the heads of our enemies disappear in clouds of red mist
The most impressive thing is not even the visuals, it's the sound design.
Nothing brings more life to a boltor than that deep "BOOM BOOM" sound. It's phantastic
Skills + Passion = Masterpiece. I love watching reactions of this awesome piece of art, and it brings new appreciation for things i missed.
Well said!
The level of detail is immense. Even the walls covered in paper prayers and wards for the thing in that room. And watch the stone towers closely at the end, his fellow Marines jump to each one as well.
Love all the small details! Really shows off Syama Pedersen's talent and passion.
You can't imagine the lvl of details until you saw videos about it
At 4:38 when he shoots his gun you've got a "stop" in the trigger meaning that he starts pushing the hammer of the gun
There is their name on the side of their armour, only the lense broke at 5:40, etc etc ... masterpiece
Another detail is how the bullets from the Bolter arc away from the psy attack while the Space Marine was unloading his entire magazine into one of the two enemy psykers.
The attention to detail to every scene is phenomenal.
Awesome!
My favorite little detail is when Beakie finishes off the Inquisitor(dude in the red hood). The bolter round's explosions flutters out the Captain's cape progressively with each shot. I've watched this animation so many times and there is always something new to find.
Such attention to detail! Love it!
Ive watched this multiple times and LOVE it. And even then the small teleports at the end i only noticed because you pointed it out. The amount of detail is AMAZING
Totally agree! Such a small but important detail at the end there.
Camera work is amazing throughout - especially the way he uses it to convey weight. Especially at the beginning when the Marines are stepping into the landing craft, the viewer can feel it. Great use of sound design, camera placement and shudder, and great lighting.
Very well done with a good cinematic and design mind / eye!
That attention to detail, feel and weight is some next level shit. Lots of movie production houses should be taking notes. Srsly.
Oh nice!
The fact that you can pick up on what the scene is conveying without dialogue just shows how good of a job he did to tell the story.
Such a small buy important detail!
How do you know the pillar is someone being teleported? All I see is a flashing pillar.
This was done by one guy. Games workshop actually hired him after this came out, so now that guy is officially making warhammer content.
So crazy! He is obviously crazy talented....his passion shows here!
And he is officially NOT making warhammer content and working on his own project, because, you know - GW is moron company....
I don’t think they’ve actually had him do much yet, they kinda just shut him down so we will never see more astartes
@@Ddarth_sidious yea true. It’s so shitty they probably hired him just so he couldn’t make more….Fans make better content than the actual group that owns the material.
That is exactly why they hired him. Because they had WarhammerTV coming out and Astartes made every single other thing they had look like trash.
another great 40K (actually 30K) fan animation is The Death of Hope and its trailers really highlights the Grim in grimdark.
Ooooo alright! Ill check it out today!
Death of hope is much more Grimdark takes place during the Horus Heresy
Yea, Death of Hope is still the best WH fan made stuff ever. It's not as "polished" as Astartes, but the grimdark sense of WH universe is perfectly captured there. I love all the visuals of the Marines or that fricking Terminator there, mind-blowingly good.
3:23 the shooter had a spotter who is the one that gets knifed later. at this moment he gets snuck up on
Watching a professional react to this so positively is heartwarming. Such an amazing piece of work.
Hey thanks! Such an amazing piece of work!
Oh man, I've watched the Astartes clips multiple times now, but never noticed what this guy points out happening at the end - that there are other little blips of people/Astartes/xenos/something teleporting in atop those pillars in the distance. So cool.
Small but cool detail!
Whoa that trailer was sweet. Why wont it come out?
GW picked up the artist and is having him work on there most modern trailers. if you watch them you can see some of his work.@@ChompStudio
GW held them at metaphorical gunpoint with the contract of "Either join us or never talk or create fan art/videos of warhammer again."
Again not blaming the artists, just saying the hate is obvious when you join a company suffering backlash.
Hey thanks for the kind words!
This is helpful! Thanks!
This is one of those videos that I've seen hundreds of times, and I swear, every time I watch it I see some little detail I didn't notice before.
So good!
Totally agree! He didnt have to add that little secondary animation...but there it is!
Love it!
the closest we have to a Boltgun is the Gyrojet pistol.
@@zachsmith1676 take a Gyrojet and stick it in a shotgun shell and you have a redneck bolter.
Thats awesome!
wow, you were able to really understand and pick things up quick. from the orbs communicating to each other, the dialogue they had, the actual analysis of the camera and lighting work, and the teleporting to another world, bravo

A bit late to comment, but I just had to say something 😭. I absolutely love when the first space marine starts charging the psykes with the knife. Whhhattt? This is awesome to know thanks!
Bit of a bummer. It worked for Arcane....not sure why there isnt more of this.

Space Marines essentially have impeccable aim, and once they've spotted a target its almost impossible for them to miss the only caveat being the distance their weapons can fire. They are also on average over 7 feet tall outside of their armor and weigh well over 600 lbs. by themselves.
I can definitely feel this throughout the cinematic! Nice!
They don't need to bandy about with words, or start monologuing or be over dramatic about shit. They're here to do a job; get in, secure the ship, eliminate all threats, secure the asset. They have a mission and nothing is going to slow them down for even a second.

Depends on who's writing them.

Hmmmm this is a bummer. I would love to talk to Syama sometime
Shooting the Psyker (the word used about psychic people in 40k) would not have been enough. He was going through a possession, which in 40k is *BAD*
a possession can lead to any number of things, from a single demon forcing its way into our world, to a tear in reality, letting demons and chaos energies flow freely into our realm.
This is great! Thanks for the lore!

The funny thing is, as much as Space Marines look overpowerd and such, there are still "normal" units in armies of other significant factions, which can just stomp them on their way somewhere important. Creation of Astardes wasn't just a flex of Humans to show off, it was a necessity to even out the odds
Love this! Thanks!
Oh no.....well I definitely don't like the sound of that.
They're a small international corporation that was protecting their biggest moneymaker which is 40k.
they went after everything. fanfics, fan animations, every single venue they could think of. Hell, I STILL have to add (Unofficial) in the title of every fanfic I write just to avoid getting slammed by their lawyers
@@xxchaos315xx6 the stuff on wahmmer tv is good? What are you smoking? Bruva Alfabusa made better content, and he uses still images, the same as them
@@xxchaos315xx6no, GW went after ANYBODY for IP infringement regardless of whether they were profiting or not.
Writers, animators, artists, sculptors, game moddest, Dinae matter, they’ve all been hit by GW. They may have since pulled back a little bit, but there are many, MANY artists and creators out there who’ve received C&Ds for as little as having ‘40k” in their username….
One detail i love about this is when he's being absorbed sideways, the camera fades as his eye goes into the sphere, just 🤌🏻
So cool!
18:53 no way, your the very first guy reacting to Astartes to notice this, trully amazing
