➡️ Is there a tighter, faster, heavier band than @Archspiremetal? After seeing this, I'm skeptical. Like, I looked away for one second and missed about 500 notes. I was aware of this band for awhile but didn't know the absolute monster player Jared Smith joined this band awhile back. In this video, I take on "Drone Corpse Aviator" from the latest Archspire record "Bleed the Future" and witness an absolute rampage of precision, technicality, and an absolute masterclass on many bass techniques such as two-handed tapping, double-thump, three-finger plucking, and more. I breakdown Jared's bass tapping parts, tips on executing them, his use of the floating-thumb technique, fast plucking, and more. I didn't want this video to end!!! Lastly, his Dingwall 6-string sounds MONSTROUS! 🥵

Keep recommending me these insane bass players...I want more! Thanks to ALL of you who recommended Archspire - I'm glad I got to catch up on their newest material!
Once again first fragment Dominic Forest Lapointe :) "flamenco" death metal fretless bass player. Really high skilled. Song like "la veuve et le martyr" ou "soif brulante"
Oh and I forgot a prog metal band with two basses and drum no guitar: "Omnific" song "piece of virtue" for exemple
@@dalweed100 running on the theme of Canadian metal, Dominic was also my first thought.
Posted about Jared yesterday on your comments sections and you put this reaction today, what a great surprise.
I would recommend a reaction at a bass playthrough from Eugene of Jinjer (Vortex for example). And I would say Simen Borven from Leprous (I Lose Hope bass playthrough), and Amos Williams from Tesseract (who has also a lot of bass playthrough on youtube)
Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse but whilst playing for Blotted Science (can't find a video of him playing it but check out the track "Synaptic Plasticity"). Some of the playing is similar to what Jared's putting out IMO. Even the playthrough video of Corpses "Frantic Disembowelment" is mental. Jared is amazing though, love Archspire
Archspire is the only band I know where every musician, including the singer, are top-tier technical peak level. AND has a great sense of melody.
And sense of humor. When youre this technical, its easy to get all up your own ass. They dont fall into that trap by acknowledging hiw silly what they do is.
MESHUGGAHHHHHHHHH
Meshuggah too
Cattle decapitation maybe
@@elliottpetrella155 @Kaitlyn Birtell I don't think Meshuggah really has melody tho.
Fun fact about Jared, he didn't even play bass until he auditioned for the band. He was a guitar player, and went to school for music.
Regardless, he's an incredible musician
Geez - insane natural talent!
What??
@@d77sauce true story
So that’s why he plays a 6 string bass lmao 😂
Goddamn, now he even gets more respect.
I've seen Archspire live a few times, most recently last week in Seattle, and I confirm that they NAIL it live. Beyond belief.
saw em in nor cal, flawless they are insane top of the heap imo! \m/
Seen them in Atlanta and they took the top spot for my favorite technical band beating out btbam
Jared smith !!!! This man is a machine!
Don't stop this series , it's my afterwork medecine
Thank you, I LOVE hearing that. It's a fun escape for me too when I get to dive into great music, played by bassists who really inspire me! Cheers!
You definitely need to react to Beyond Creation, they play technical death metal. Their first bassist was Forest Lapointe and he has quite some bass walkthroughs for the band. However, now the bassist is Hugo Doyon-Karout and he's doing an extremely awesome job so far. Here are a few songs to listen to:
Omnipresent Perception (Arguably the most well-known song by them, with Forest)
Earthborn Evolution (Forest has a bass walkthrough video but the official video is with Hugo)
Theatrical Delirium (It has a very complicated bass section, played by Hugo in the official video)
Binomial Structures (Instrumental, and my personal favorite out of their last album. It doesn't have an official video)
Keep up the great work Mark!
YES PLEASE!!!!
Came to the comments looking for this
I absolutely loved Forests work with Augury.
Alternatively, check out Forest in his new band, First Fragment! 'La Veuve et Le Martyr' is a great song with a playthrough video
my favourite band
This is one of those bands that the reactions channels love because no matter if you're a vocal coach, bass coach, guitair or drum coach, there is sooooooo much to delve into with Archspire. G.O.A.T. of Tech Death
saw these guys live with psycroptic in march, an absolute clinic in tech playing from both bands, as a bass player it was a treat.
I love Archspire. They do that thing that a lot of other tech death bands forget which is actually right interesting songs rather than just 4 minutes of wankery.
Just saw these guys recently open for Whitechapel. I'm not crazy about their music but their musicianship is insane.
They are miles better than Whitechapel
no ne3d we know Britney is dirrty
just saw them yesterday. insane tour lineup for sure
They dont take themselves too seriously and i love that about them.
I played Twister in their mosh pit 😎
They rule, he rules and you rule for reacting to it. Sooo sick, man.
Thanks!!! 🙏🏼
Showing the love for Canadian Metal! Archspire is killer!
One more Jared brutal fingers
Drain of incarnation
Lets react
About pure insanity:
- Dominic 'Forest’ Lapointe - for me the most insane fretless bass player. He played in Beyond Creation (I recommend this band), then he went to the First Fragment which is even more technical
- Mike Flores - each time I see his right hand technique it blows me away (origin band) - he is hitting up and down string with his finger(s) - easy 16ths in +200bpm
- "InsaneDeathMachine" channel - probably the most technical bassist which I ever found. He makes Rings of Saturns songs even harder - check 'RINGS OF SATURN - "Shards Of Scorched Flesh" on bass'
- Scott Plummer - [*] he played in Viraemia band (not my style, too extreme) on 10-string bass. One big shred + tapping guy
- Linus Klausenitzer - I'm sure you know him from Obscura
There are some technical bands like Brain Drill, Nile, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus, The faceless, Necrophagist, Cannibal Corpse. I respect the music, but I'm not a fan of these bands
Honourable mention
- CannibalisticZombie - thanks to his covers I discovered technical death metal scene. He made tons of technical death metal covers.
I also like Bryan Beller - I recommend to check the virtual (made for animation) death metal band "dethklok" for fun and enjoyment (pretty good music) and his second project "The Aristocrats" - jazz-fusion (?) with Guthrie Govan and Marco Minnemann each of these musicians is incredibly good
I love Jared Smith and Archspire.
From what I've gathered from their tab book is that most of the fast parts are in triplets or sextuplets so it's easier with the 3 finger technique.
Thanks Roy! This makes sense, and I threw it out there in my commentary because I suspected as much. Fast camera cuts made it harder to tell on some parts, but this would surely lend itself to 3-note groupings. I love when a fast passage is in 3's, ha!
Erlend Caspersen’s playthrough of The Evangelist by Spawn of Possession is super impressive
The thing that is really cool about that dude, is that even with his insane talent, he is really a nice guy to talk to, he will take all his time to talk to you, he's really humble.
I think it's tough to top Archspire in terms of speed, complexity, and beautiful compositions. Sure there's faster but it starts to feel like too much at a certain point. I think Archspire strikes that perfect balance of insane technical speed with catch rhythms and melodies.
Nah, Origin, Henker, Viraemia and that type of stuff is where it's at, brutal as hell, technical as hell and did such weird stuff. Archspire to me is the stuff that those who don't actually like death metal listens to, but to each their own. They're great musicians but not enough brutal involved.
@@jasonlauritsen5587 "Archspire to me is the stuff that those who don't actually like death metal listens to"
Found the Elitist :)
Imagine listening to and liking both, Archspire and Origin (and Death Metal in general of course)
@@jasonlauritsen5587 "not enough brutal involved", so if they mixed the album poorly, had more generic vocals and played it at 1.25x speed, they might be "brutal" enough to compare to your list there?
@@jasonlauritsen5587 you sound like a goof
absolutely comedic take@@jasonlauritsen5587
I’m gonna go see these guys live tomorrow! So stoked to see this live!
If you haven't heard of Beyond Creation than you gotta check them out, the base work is always fantastic. It's always a 6 string fretless and it's just *chef's kiss*. Just great stuff, and their first bass player Dominic "Forest" Lapointe has some bass playthroughs. Highly recommended.
Another Great video. Keep them coming!!
I love seeing the local boys getting more attention lately, or at least I'm seeing them get more of it at least. This album even won them a Juno award for best heavy metal/hard rock album I believe. For those that don't know, the Juno's are like the Grammy's, but exclusively for Canadian artists and bands. Another major plus about these guys, they are really awesome people to just chill with and talk to. I've had the pleasure of meeting them after some local gigs and they are just really great human beings.
In regards to crazy bass playing, recently watched the band playthrough of Cattle Decapitation's Scourge of the Offspring, and their bassist blew me away. Would love to see you watch and react to Olivier Pinard's crazy style. Also Ryan Martinie, the man behind the br br DENG meme xD Mudvayne's music almost feels like it's built around his basslines. He's also in Soften the Glare, an instrumental group that definitely is focused around him. Obviously any Mudvayne song or Soften the Glare is good, but doing Mudvayne Dig for the meme would be wonderful.
This is one of my favourite songs, I never really realized until now how well written this was.
All of archspire's songs are short, even at though their albums are 30 minutes there's enough notes for 2 full 1 hour albums, and the vocalist has like 3000 words to remember in a 30 minute record haha.
That is definitely accurate, although if you think about it, it's not really as many words as it seems, with Oli using lots of long, tongue-twisting, multi-syllable words like "involuntary" and "doppelganger". The ridiculously high number of complexly arranged syllables Oli seamlessly spits out like a fully automatic shotgun makes it seem like more words are being used.
Everytime i hear this band only thing i can think of is how much better this band would be with an actually gifted vocalist
Jared and archspire are awesome. watching his videos made me start working on the three finger technique. not great at it, but working on it...
I've seen them live twice and they are just AMAZING live, my favorite death metal band right now.
You should definitely watch Jared's playthrough for Relentless Mutation - he really showcases his ability to write music to the song's parts, rather than writing doing crazy shit just cos he can.
I also met him at their show in Nottingham, UK - he's so down to earth and chill (I'm sure the rest of the guys are too)
Nice! I'm scared to watch more 😅 it's so insane and makes me want to quit!
Drain of Incarnation by Archspire also have a bass video and have great parts. Anything from Dominic Forest in Beyond Creation or lately in First Fragment is great stuff
There's a video of Jared playing at NAMM2020 at the DarkGlass booth you'll love.
He’s up there with Forest!! I love My Dingwall, they play soo nice and just feel so comfortable in the hand and the weight is perfect they come setup amazing! His pinky so so strong!
Love my Dingwall too. I have the NG3 6 string pink swril. My other basses are sad and lonely.
@@Iamnotaserialkiller_nice! I have the NG3 black and took my pickguard off right away lol, I try to rotate my basses as much as I can lol. I would love a ABZ too but man that’s is a pricy bass
saw archspire for the second time april 24 when they came through with whitechapel, absolute amazing show, definitely gonna stay catching them every time they pass through town
just saw them last week and WOW what an experience!!! pushing the envelope fr
Saw them perform this live and it was freaking amazing!
I bet!!
Jared is the best guitarist in Archspire. Dude is unreal. Even Dean has said this multiple times.
Thanks dude for response my request ✊
Saw Archspire a couple months ago. Killer show!!
Nice! I've gotta check them out live with Jared in tow.
WHAT A BEAST🤘
Daaaaang this dude is freaking insane 😮
good god...I got chills from this, wow
Right? It's unearthly stuff.
I will second the Omipresent Perception that others are suggesting.
Also, when you were talking about the three finger technique and having the three against four thing. I got around this by going back and forth, so ring, middle, point, middle, ring, repeat.
This is Myung next level.....
Golden mouth of ruin and bleed the future is even more insane😂
seeing them at the RICKSHAW on the 19th of may!
Added this band to my Spotify within the first few seconds. GOOD SHIT.
Glad I could convert a new fan! A small part of what I hope to do as well here. 🙏🏼
I saw them live in Dublin in March.
Just discovered your channel! I don’t play bass but always enjoy learning more about music so I can appreciate it more.
I’m sure you have tons of recommendations but one of my favorite bassists is Amos of Tesseract. They’re an extremely talented band that plays with polyrhythms. Even though they’re all talented, they play what’s needed for the song.
If you’re curious I’d recommend the Eden 2.0, dystopia, Juno or King playthrough.
Thank you for your insight!
Thank you so much, Christopher! I love Tess, and Amos is a longtime pal. I definitely want to, just needed to find the best song, and thanks for helping me narrow it down a bit. See you around!
Jared is currently my biggest inspiration. I have done a bass cover of this song, and to get those triplets down took me about 6 months. I also am a pick player mainly. Will release my third cover of an Archspire song soon ❤
I have and use that same Jackson Specter in my music. 😍 Green and all.
Archspire!
I know you have checked out Dominic forest lapointe, but you should see him play beyond creation omnipresent perception! It is an incredible bass line!!
Hugo from BEYOND CREATION is also a beast! DO: Beyond Creation:Theatrical Delirium )THE BASS SPEAKS in the middle
Oh. You did. Good on ya.
Hey Mark! Have you done anything showcasing Evan Marien or Hadrien Feraud yet? Two of my favorite players right now
Hi we love archspire #staytech
This is the first vid of yours I've seen. I saw you have a video from 1 year ago on sweeping on bass, so my recommendation for next bass player video to watch would be from the band Born of Osiris. The song Machine has some sweeping arpeggios.. If you want to get crazy, check out some songs by the band Rings of Saturn, it's just very hard to hear the bass on their songs without watching a cover or playthrough.
I think its time to Forest recieve some love in this channel. Please, any playtrough from him and his band First Fragment would be amazing
Brandon Giffen, ex-faceless and current the zenith passage, has a groove riddled playthrough on their bands yt page.
First video of ytours that's been recommended to me. It's real, real nice to see a REACT channel that does more than just go "wow, crazy music! Anyways buy my merch!" Going over the techniques is so much more interesting, thank you!
Thank you so much, I try to add some value where I can - glad to hear that feedback. Appreciate you!
Damn, some intense riffery on this track
Jared is an amazing player. If you like the tech death bassists you should check out Scott Plummer (RIP) ex bassist of the band Viraemia. Dude was on an entirely different level.
Would suggest Ne Obliviscaris for peak progressive metal. Their new bassist Martino Garattoni is insane. The whole band is on another level of complexity
Crazy thing is, he didn’t play bass until archspire, so all of his right hand technique is relatively fresh
Insane stuff!!
7:20 those kicks lol....
Jared is wild
Peter De Reyna of SevenSpires!
Scale the summit was so sick.
Those were good times!
You gotta react to Andrew Kim of Inferi, he's such a dope bass player!
Fkn sick af
I thought I was a good bassist and then I found Jared Smith and I was humbled back down to being just a decent one again 😂
You’d really like 7.H Target their bassist is absolutely insane man
3 albums i have been waiting for the 4th
I was so excited watching this they are one of my top 5 favorite bands.
Another good bad i love is Allegaeon. This is my second video of your i have seen so not sure if you seen them and they are a rare American band too
Oh yeah and Brain Drill has a crazy bassist too
cool thing i learned recently about jared, he never played a bass guitar until he auditioned for Archspire. He has a degree in music as well i believe
Insane 😭
Definitely check out Dominic "Forest" Lapointe's playthrough of "Soif Brûlante" by the band he's in, First Fragment!
Thanks Jake! I just covered Dominic a couple weeks ago for "Gula" - hope you can check it out!
Insane.
Right?!
Dominic " forest " lapointe ❤️
two you should DEFINITELY check out, though finding great videos like this one of Jared will be difficult:
1) Mike Flores of Origin, arguably the "originator" of this kind of superfast and technical death metal. i think it's faster more often, particularly on earlier albums, but arguably less varied and definitely less melodic
2) Jacob Schmidt of Defeated Sanity. basically death metal jazz. or jazz death metal. not as fast (on average) and definitely not melodic [other than "part 2" of their 2-parter album from 2016, which is a tribute to the jazzy tech death from the early 90ies], but the the complexity is mind melting. probably THE most underappreciated bassist (and likewise Lille, the even more insane drummer) in all of metal
edit: hah! there's actually a great playthrough video of Propelled Into Sacrilege on Willowtip's channel, and a good Stoned then Defiled on Jacob's own channel
7:33 I would buy a Mark Michell 6 string signature Jackson...
you should do a video checking out first fragment
I did a few weeks ago! Check it out when you can 👊🏻💥
Can you do the band First Fragment???
I love this song,I love this band, gonna see them live in august, but after seeing these kinds of videos,i get really depressed, and inspired to give up playing bass, cause i know i^ll never be not even close to play something like this...not even remotely... i am sad :(
Do you think these bass parts could be played with a pick? Not looking to debate pick vs finger techniques, just curious of your opinion. Thanks!
@3:30 that’s an entire tonal change. I’ve heard Dean Lamb say they put these slow clean parts on songs to give their hands a break from all the fast guitar playing that proceeded it.
Ha! Smart! I believe that.
Check Seven Spires - Gods of Debauchery. This is a symphonic metal band of berklee graduates
You should check out first fragment Forest Lapointe is a monster fretless 6 string player
Thanks Andrew! I just posted one late last week for "Gula" - check it when you can! Appreciate you stopping by.
Just found your channel. What is your name and what band or bands do you play with?
Hey Bob! Check the video description for more info on me - I'm Mark Michell and have played with Scale the Summit, Tetrafusion, and Tony MacAlpine!
Toshiya from DIR EN GREY when lol. dudes an insane musician
Dominic Lapointe - Soif Brulante or La Veuve Et Le Martyr - those will blow You away...
Ahh God bless
Lol The singer sounds like Nathan Explosion 🤘
Jared is a great guy. Working on that track right now. It's a meat grinder :D
Dang! Best of luck! It's intimidating, for sure...
@@LowEndUniversity I have an old attempt on my channel. Fair to say that a bunch of your lessons on here helped getting me there as well :)
I would be so down for the bass guitar to always be this loud in the mix. Maybe like 10% quieter, but still I NEED THOSE LICKS
if you haven't already you should do a video on Ryan Martinie he is my personal fav player.
On my list! Trying to decide which song to do...
Amazing player and tone, holy shit! Archspire is starting to really grow on me.
If I can give a recommendation, check out Colin Marston’s bass play through of “an ocean of wisdom” by Gorguts
Right?! It's so much to take in, but oddly enough, it's so easy to listen to as well. Such an odd thing, I can't stop listening lol. I'll check that out ASAP!
Should listen to "Seething With Disdain" or "Wrong One to Fuck With" by Dying Fetus
I'm sorry but i cant not hear Dethklok any time i hear the vocals of this band.
Nathan Explosion just kinda manifests in my head.
hey, do you know Beyond Creation? The bassist is insane!
He sure is! I did a video on him just a couple weeks ago here! Hope you enjoy it: ua-cam.com/video/nWkxTHPhG78/v-deo.html
@@LowEndUniversity oh sorry i didn't see! thanks
@@LowEndUniversity Enjoying the video! thx! And do you know the second basist, Hugo Doyon-Karout? He seems to be just as strong!
Make a review of Anatoly Krupnov! The best bass player of USSR
What can you say??? Great bass, Great technique, brilliant chops! WHAT"S NOT TO LOVE. It Victor Wooten but death metal!
Victor Wooten is in a metal band now! I can't recall the name but check it out if you get the chance.
Ha! Thanks guys! He sure is, that's a really cool project. It was like 'Octa' something, I need to look it up again. I remember it sounding very sweet!
Erlend Caspersen. None over none beside.
Erlend is sick
