    Great video!
    I picked up my 150 grain Commando for my old 3wt /8ft rod after watching this video and it is genuinely easy to cast 90-100ft constantly not to mention I'm having right shoulder problem not able to haul or force cast at all.

    You are hysterical! Love the generic questions; well answered. I wasn't exactly certain how long Commandos have been around, but I think you're one of the earliest reviewers of them. I also think that that timeline indicates their effectiveness, that they're not just a passing trend. More and more now I see them on people's rods, though it seems that with the scandi/skagit curve finally flattening, the Commando crates a whole other dynamic to the sport and adds a little confusion. For example, while I built my first Spey rod back in the 90s, only these last several years have I revisited the sport, that was after taking up and really learning centrepinning, which is a whole other animal. I had purchased at least two commandos when they first came out a few years back and contacted a guy at ECHO to see - because they don't list Commandos on their line-weight recommendations - if I had the right one or was in the ballpark and he said he had never fished a Commando on it and he guessed at the weight, which I knew right away he was way off and had no real clue what I was talking about. So, in fiddling with it, trying on two rods, I figured out which was the one it belonged on. In addition, funny enough, one of my early Commandos has now weight impregnated near the welded loop, so I have to guess, lol. Anyway, great video!

    Great video I love the Opst line, would like to know what you used for tips/ leaders on the setups mentioned.

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  7 років тому +2

      Roman Graybill and sink tip will work. I used 375-475 grain heads, my sink tips ranged from 10-18ft and from floating to t-20 in weight. On the end of the sink tip I have between 3-6 ft of fluoro or mono depending on clarity. These commando heads will cast just about anything well

    Awesome video! Really looking forward to getting my hands on one of these lines! Do you need to have a floating tip on, or could you get away with just a mono tapered leader?

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  7 років тому

      Haven't tested with a mono tapered leader. Depends on grain weight of head probably. Intermediate tips cast a dream, so I'm assuming you could figure something out there.

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  7 років тому +1

      Adrian Struwig, I'll add it to my list of things to try

    • @AdrianStruwig
      @AdrianStruwig 7 років тому

      oliver sutro Great! Thanks man! I'm going to be using the 250 grain head on my single handed 6 weight. Mostly for streamer/popper fishing for Perch and Pike so I don't think a tip would spook the fish. I've already made my own floating from an old line I had lying around. The sink tips I will get the opst tips. Sadly they don't sell the floating tips here in Sweden (from what I know).

  • @BorisWDell
    @BorisWDell 7 років тому +3

    The line is a blast to cast but good luck trying to get a good presentation after you spook most of the fish......

    • @scouter6926
      @scouter6926 6 років тому +6

      Boris, you can present without a fly disturbing fish with Skagit rigs but it's purpose was not to stalk and fish in slow moving caulk streams or shallow slow moving water ways but for often) wide, deep, boulder strewn rushing winter waters where you can hear little but the broad of the water and can hear/feel smaller boulders bouncing along along the bottom. Even a big splash from a big float and dropper Steelhead rig isn't going to be noticed by fish in those conditions.
      The fact that with casting skills such as demonstrated in this video the Skagit technique can easily be adapted to many different fishing and water situation including use a long leader to deliver a dry fly with minimum disturbance.
      Form follows function! And, when the function is perfected beautiful form is automatically present. And to watch Skagit, unbound by the restraints of tradition sending a small fly or a big, articulted weighted bushy 'Barely Legal' is beautiful. Tight lines.

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  5 років тому +3

      Boris this is a common concern. I think if you’re concerned about uber stealthy presentation, you’re not going to get it spey casting in any way. Pick up a single hander and don’t let the line touch the water. Also, if you talk to seasoned guides in the Pacific Northwest and BC, steelhead and salmon don’t seem to mind these small disturbances. In fact, many a time Ive been having a slow day until a jetboat rips up my run and then all the sudden the bite picks up.

    Nice vid.
    Nymphing = "no" though, unless you add a monorig, then "yes". Way to heavy for nymphing.
    Of course an indicator would allow nymphing, but an indicator would allow nymphing with a Zebco 202 combo.

    I have another question. Can it be used in tropic warm waters? I'm thinking some roosterfish in Baja

    • @Tokyoflyfishing
      @Tokyoflyfishing 7 років тому

      Try search keywords "Saltwater Spey Casting".
      In my experience, coldwater flyline works in tropical situation as long as you are careful not to let it stick on hot surface, but never the opposite.

    The real question is, can u cast it well in a sit in kayak (no chair just ass and plastic)

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  4 роки тому

      i think the hardest think about kayak fishing is controlling the direction of the boat. If the direction of your boat is steady, no problem.

    Is it possible to fish dry flies whit it? Or it will just scare all fish?

    • @oesutro
      @oesutro  4 роки тому +1

      It is possible with a floating tip, but I find it's more practical to use a WF line if you're planning on doing a lot of that.
