As an older feller, this being the first video I watched with Papa, I thoroughly enjoyed the explanation that accompanied this video. Quail are in my very near future.
I've built a lot of cages, but none for quail (open at bottom for eggs to roll out and be easy to collect). My cages are built to be multi-purpose, not just for one particular animal/critter. And I just got some White Coturnix, and plan to get more quail. My experience is to forget the ready-made metal poo pans. Whatever size cage you make, just leave a few inches in between. Cut a feed sack on the end so it's tubular, then cut down one side. Lay this nice slick surface underneath to catch the poo! You can fold the ends in and pull it out for dumping. Sprinkle a little sphagnum peat moss for absorption of the poo if you want, makes it a little more manageable and less sticky.

I am an experienced wood worker and cage maker. Your video is fantatstic. I really loved watching you and it made me miss my Dad so much though you and I are around the same age. I hope folks make these with young people to teach them. Teach them conservation of movement, conservation of supplies, logic and sequence along with the safe use of tools. I also want to say that if you do not have the money for ringers and rings use nylon zip ties. They are strong, safe and remove much easier if you screw up the putting on. Plus you can even find them everywhere. Even the rabbits do not chew through the large ones and they really try. I use them and even stack the cages for the rabbits so quail must be easier to do so with.
This was a terrific how-to video, and enjoyable to watch. I also think I need a cage that has an enclosed area to keep the birds outdoors. I'm also concerned about predators reaching through the wider gaps. Thanks for taking the time to teach us. It really makes people feel confident purchasing from you.
Hey Pappa you got me started now so I started adapting for my needs .I am making banks 8 ft long now and hanging them off the floor with wire..The bottom rails are hard maple and they are about 1 and a half inches after the saw kerf..So I drilled little holes thru it at 4 inch intervals and the side wires go down thru those holes .The stick out about 1/4 inch on the bottom and I just bend those over with a hammer .like you would a nail that went thru something.It made the sides very strong and left less wood rail surface that they poop on.
Just got my trays from e-bay! 18 x26 6 of them for about 11 bucks apiece . Great video ! Using zip ties to fasten it together. Thanks for all the good ideas !

YES thats RIGHT, WE had ALREADY made a cage cutting it and the welds WHERE coming APART!! So WHEN BUYING imported CHINA MADE WIRE you had better UNROLL YOUR WIRE to make sure its WELDED EVERY WHERE!! 1x2 square WELDED wire !! RABBIT cages multiplied unbelievably 3 RABBITS X well You got the IDEA
I like the way you built your cages. And really love your guys's videos. I'm Wanted to get in to quail. But I Only got 16 quill eggs right now. But I like to get at least a 100 or 200 Quill time I'm done. I'm wanting to find a place to where I can buy some quill eggs to hatch more out.
This cage is not good for out side ,winter and all.But sense I am putting the car out side and my quail inside the garage,This is perfect.I love the modular stuff and the stacking . I can not find any trays like these aluminum ones ,but then I figured I could just cut some thin plywood cut to size and laminate some cheap flormica,trim it with some pressure treat strips ripped off a piece 5\4 th deck material. I can just run along in front of the banks and jerk the trays out into my wheel barrow. Thank you so much Papa for helping me make up my mind on how Im going to build my cages. Now before I start I just want to know if this is your very best Idea??? Before I start and then you show us an even better Idea? Lol My plan is to get a hold of some of your birds or eggs.Hope that is possible.
If you chok(prop) the cage on an angle or build it that way the eggs roll forward into a space with a little egg catcher (if you have large quails - that don't get out the little gap - it's not rodent proof: but a cat with long whiskers is 😊).
WATCHED ! I never thought about using different hardware cloth on the sides versus bottom. I've only used the small holes for all around but it's definitely cheaper to do the bigger holes!
I don't use lumber - at all. Have no way to cut it. All metal cages are pre-cut into pieces (or folded) and I can always take them apart and use the smaller cut pieces as dividers that hang from the top; if I don't want to divide, then I swing the hanging down divider piece up and just tie it off. When needed, untie and let it hang down, put a few clips to keep it in place as a divider (as needed).
Been a while Pappy but way back when my cousin and I made some long cage banks with just the one by two wire.The wire its self was plenty strong and stiff enough to support its self, but I must say yours are prettier and I like the idea of just plucking out the whole cage and moving it someplace else if I wanted to.That noise I hear in the back ground sounds a lot like Zack,

Any chance you are making a video on your conveyor poop system. I would like to see how you made the under cages conveyors. Also where you found the belts.

The tool you got at the feed store are Jclip pliers (the metal you put in them are J clips) you can get them on amazon among alot of other animal/farm related places like TSC and whatnot..... just got done Jclipping 10lbs of Jclips on a 25'x25' rabbit growout pen i built XD
Curious as to why you attach the side wire on top of the wood versus around the outside of the wood bottom frame? You would not have the wire ends inside the cage then but loose a bit in height. I didn't know if it was important for strength when stacking cages or not. I have a full size oven pan from a used food equipment supply store and this would be a good used for it.
As a rabbit breeder I build lots of cages. I watched this video to look for tricks on building some additional cages as I prepare to resume quail...IF YOU EVER GET WILD JUMBO EGGS BACK ON LINE. 😜😀 Those J clip pliers that are available at TSC or most any feed store will wear your hands out. Klubertanz.com items ZJC3 ($13.90) and ZJCR (22.40) are of the best investments I’ve made in tools. I’m not in any way affiliated with Klubertanz except as a satisfied customer.
Zip ties are like masking tape, they are useful short term. I use them to hold the cage together while I clip with the j clips. I find that zip ties can and do get brittle.

This is our newest ways to make the cages but always trying to improve sooooo. As of now this is our best way. Hahahaha.

Do you have any problems with rodents getting in through the 1" x 2" wire?
Mice can easily squeeze through. Probably 1/4" by 1/4" week keep them out.
On door latch you could add a washer instead of cutting notch. Faster and no worry of cutting finger

Wouldn't it be easier to build a jig for assembly? It would make it square every time and you wouldn't have to hold anything just glue and nail.

It's better to have your dropping tray larger than your cage. The birds will back up to the wire and poop will go onto the floor.

Slope is easy on a hanging system . Make your front chain a little longer than your rear chain depending how much slope you want

Raccoons can get their hands in the 1"x2" and grab the birds. they did it on my birds
Even with 1x1 wire. These guys have inside cages.mine are outside in warm weather. So I use 1/2. X 1/2 wire

It really depends on your tray. We have many different sizes just becuase we get different size trays. We build around that.
