When i began raising quail many years ago, there wasn't much information available & finding your channel back then was a Godsend! Even now, with other sources, yours is the best for what I want to do. Others teach how to keep hundreds, or even thousands of quail. I want a few for meat & eggs. Got into it when the Stimulus Checks came out, so I was living the old Dire Straits tune: I got my money for nothin' & my chicks for free... Thanks for the years of ideas, solutions, encouragement, advice, and just plain commardarie. May God continue to bless you & yours.
I got started with quail about 10 years ago. Your channel was my go-to with any questions, and I would recommend your channel to anyone who was new to quail. Thanks for all the great videos and information over the years.
What I find really fascinating about coturnix quail are their origins. In Japan, these birds were originally raised as songbirds, but then the events of WWII happened and the songbird line was lost. All the quail that we have now are based on the few that survived from the egg production line.
We get our quail tomorrow, built my brooder box, and work on the pen, bought it from a family, but I am removing the floor replacing the wire completely and secured it.
Thanks for making this video! I got several ides that I'll incorporate into my next cage build. You touched on adding plastic to help weatherproof. I use the empty feed sacks my quail food comes in. Split them open and staple them on.... easy, cheap and fast! And, a never ending supply! 😂 Also, I totally agree with you about the snakes. They do a great job keeping the rat population down....If only they could catch squirrels...😕
We had a rat snake here a couple of weeks ago that was a bit larger than yours, and quite a bit lighter in color. My friend told me that when they shed their skin, they will be light-colored for a while and then darken up again. (The color had us confused when we tried to identify it.)
I would like to see a video on your new incubator (I may have missed it). I mimicked your whole set up when I started (SW MO). Always great content, long-time subscriber.
What do you think about the JMF wild type I have about 150 mixed colors, most of my cages are set up similar to yours one or three layers out side with poop trays
What variety lays the blue eggs? That might be my ticket to getting some quail. Mother of my kids has a few chickens. She recently got some Easter Eggers to add to her flock. Has anyone ever tried to hatch quail under a chicken?
Chickens crush the smaller quail eggs, but the smaller pekins or silkies will hatch quail. But then she should only lay on quail eggs and not a mix of quail and chicken eggs because quail eggs will lay at the bottom and not be turned / kept warm effectively.
My problem is regular backyard visits by rats and snakes of all kinds besides the useless stray cats! I just want to keep a few layer quails indoors and not attract any more wildlife. Only a few weeks ago I caught a sluggish baby cobra wrapped around my backdoor with a distended tummy! I do want to keep a few ducks outdoors though for pest control in the garden. Trying to figure out how to avoid their food mess and hope they can hold their own.
Recently I bought 6 quail from someone I new in town. With in one week I’ve lost 2 birds with out of no where. Plenty of feed and clean water every day. Can you tell me why this is happening or maybe happening?

How do you keep your water system from freezing in the winters

Just a tickler on an old video request. How about one on heat lamp vs. heat plate? Personally I have gone over to heat plates for safety reasons.
I like the little giant.

I love the way you do it and I cant wait to do it when I get my place. Been watching you forever.
Thank you for sharing your changes over time! Nice-looking snake!
Thanks for the video, Chris! Quick question:Do you go by the 3 Quail/1 square foot rule?
Excellent! Thanks for the update!!
Thanks

Where do you purchase fertile eggs?
Amazon or a business website?
Can you do a video on what you feed them?

Snakes that end up in my chicken coop are dead meat. Yes they will come time after time until you dispose of them.
