Put a 180° thermostat in it. It’ll never come off of 180, even at 60 over. You’re not keeping the coolant in the radiator long enough. If it doesn’t have a fan shroud, get one from LMC, and even at a stop light, it’ll cool awesome.
Absolutely. Clean block, 180 Therm, and a Fan Shroud and FEs will run cool all day. I live in the desert and regularly see 105+ temps even in traffic and I have never had an overheating issue. They cool extremely well if ran correctly.
I’m an FE guy. Totally agree, spot on with the recs.
@@erincherry3870 yep. Any engine is going to respond the way he describes if you yank the thermostat and run it without a fan shroud.
.060 isn't gonna hurt anything. Ditch the 120lb intake and get a small tow cam. Your temp was climbing because of the gunk in the cooling system lol.
Craig put an RV cam and Lifters in that 390 great for towing and Doulble timing chain. You are already there.😊😊😊🎉🎉
Hehehe. “I’m not going to rebuild it, it’s just a reseal”. Famous last words
my Dad and my uncles all ran 427's and 390's back in the day great motors👍 you should polish that timing cover they look awesome polished with the ford engine blue paint.
C4AE-H are service replacement 427 low riser heads.
Bro, 7.3 power stroke would be pretty dang sweet.
Craig put an RV cam, roller rockers, Holly EFi Long tube headers, big electric fans, a 160 thermo, 4 core radiatior and a gear vendors over drive and pull like a freight train
I can't imagine you're getting much better than 7 MPG now. I recently bought a 72 F250 2wd with a 360 in it. Body is in pretty good shape but I'll probably end up rebuilding the engine.
My 352 in my lowered f100 gets about 14 mpg on the freeway with a 750-I was getting 16 with a 650
The 360 in my 4x4 f100 gets 12mpg on 35" tires. I'm sure he's in the 10-12 range.
390 crank and rods you’ve got a 390 when it comes time to rebuild
@@Wrencheasy That's the plan. Hope there's no. problem with my block.
Im putting a 7.3 PSD with a ZF6 manual behind it in my 79 F250! your build has inspired me to build one of my dream trucks!
hugely excited about FE content! Keep her and work with Brent Lykins!!
I agree with Lykins or Randy at survival.
Brass freeze plugs are a nice upgrade 🏴☠️
Brass are better than the stock steel core plugs but I prefer stainless. They are definitely worth the money - at least as long as they are American made. I don't trust nor buy the Chineseium versions. Best wishes!

Back in the day coolant was silica heavy. When the additives break down, the pH goes acidic, silica drops out and it corrodes the iron block into muddy goo. Owner of a coolant recycling company taught me that.
I have a 1973 F100 I bought it after watching your show that came up for sale
That good old "While we're here will get you every time!"
Well sen you got it out YOU MIGHT AS WELL 😝
If you were to go the Godzilla route there’s literally no reason to shove a “built” one in there. The truck is old as shit and the Godzilla makes 430/475 stock and that’s plenty for the truck. Even if you wanted to up those numbers a little bit, you wouldn’t have to do anything considered drastic that would impact MPG’s.
Makes ya wonder if the old guy at the yard you bought it from didn't get the 2 trucks mixed up and the other truck had the built 390 in it.
You can go to .80" over in an FE block so long as it will pass a sonic test for clearance to coolant passages around the cylinder walls. Like others have said, put a good timing set on it and clean her up
As everyone said while your there put a tow/ rv cam, long tube headers, etc. Basically maximize the power if a stock setup. But also a big difference would be the transmission. Ditch the 4spd and id swap in a zf 5 or 6. Better ratios for towing and overdrive for hwy cruising. To help a bit on mpg. Also if i where to change engines for diesel. Id do either a 12/24 valve cummins or 1995 /96 power stroke both with zf6. Also you can run an exhaust brake with the Cummins. For gas id do a Godzilla WITH the 10spd. Donor swap from a wrecked truck. Ie. Engine, trans, rear end. You'll have plenty of power and those trucks are getting around 15mpg empty and can tow way over 10,000lbs
“this is not gonna be a full rebuild” “just a re seal” famous last words
Check that water pump i have seen with all that rust around freeze plugs, pump blades will be ate up that will also cause a cooling problem running down the highway. CHECK THEM
No way would I put that crusty water pump back on!
Coolant pumps aren't that expensive.
100 bucks or so.
Get another one.
Save yourself from doing a coolant pump when you are on the side of the road, roadkill style.
The FE engines get no love. plan to build a 445 FE for my 69 F250 at some point. Have to stick with the 360 for now.
I have already thought about putting a ft 330 V8 in a bumper Ford f100 and use a aluminum intake manifold and a RV towing pkg camshaft kit and a high volume oil pump
I got a standard bore 428 short block for sale. 1UB crank. It was running when pulled out of crashed car.
if you want to reuse that compressor (a/c) try to go a head and cap off the service port/line connection fittings until ready to put back in service.
I'd say the 390 is fine for what you'd want to tow with that truck, but i understand that sometimes you want to take a different direction. Keeping it a stick would be cool though
Source a super duty 7.3 if possible! Be a hell of a tow Monster.
Remember thoes famous word towards the beginning about garbage in valve cover. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT ITS NOT A PROBLEM. Unless it's plugging up ur pick up filter 🤣😂😅. Still a cool truck for sure
OM606 Turbo diesel swap!!!!
For what FE motors cost to build with modern parts and get machine work done that’s why I went coyote in my 64 Galaxie. They get pricey
My dad had a 74 Camper Special, regular cab, with a 390 and factory a/c. It would freeze us out of the cab. Soooo cold.
I am debating pulling the 390 out of my Montclair, it needs a rear main. I think it has been rebuilt, I had to change the pan and every rod cap and rod are marked, I have not looked to see if the pistons are stamped oversize though. From below, the crosshatching in the cylinders looks like it was just done. Love the FE's!
Ported exhaust ports going to make a big difference for you on fe heads
Awesome 😎 🏴☠️
The Popo Medic music is banging. Love it.
I would like to see u do a power stroke build in it in the future
6.2L boss engine be a sweet gasser
Keepin it pushin! As always great work good Sir!
Bro bro bro.... totally stoked bro....yea bro....must be cali thing...
Absolutely love the videos man I have a 390 fe in my 73 ford and I absolutely love it
great stuff thanks
cummins 5.9 with a p pump would be awsome for this truck keep it simple but awsome content on this crew cab
You should pressure flush the block... 60 over is OK on an FE , the heating issue was most likely flow...good pump and t-stat should be alright.
Good winone
Or a 7.3L power stroke or a 5.9L Cummins
I think you you should put a 7.3 idi diesel from the 90's.🧡👍💯
if you ever do the engine swap to it, I think a 4bt cummins would be a cool motor for it, would still be a fummins, but it wouldn't be a copy paste 12valve fummins lol
Put RV cam in it they pull from about 1200 or lower rpm to about 4500 it make a difference
You need to put a 7.3L Powerstroke with a 6 speed in it. If not that the only other option in my opinion is a 5.9L Cummins with a 6 speed. But it being a Ford I'd personally go with a 7.3L Powerstroke with a 6 speed.
Do your C4 heads have hardened valve seats retro-fitted? If not you will get at least exhaust valves receding into the head after some miles. Those 1964 heads were not made to use unleaded gas. Don't ask me how I know. Built and raced many an FE back in the day. You could always use lead additive but that gets old in a hurry. Love the FE content! 401 cubic inch pulling mule.
Idk if coolant flushes in addition to the quick blow you did will will help i would try it though maybe and distilled water with the coolant
Nows the time for a new hood and a bigger engine
Put a 6.9/7.3 idi with a turbo in it slow yes but they pull anything and they're cool
I’ve heard of some people building those motors. Seems like it’s not too expensive and they can become very capable power/efficiency wise.
@@josephsamsor1698 your max for efeincy and reliability is around 250 hp but at that point its enough tourqe to pull anything and as far as diesels go there really cheap to reseal new injection pump injectors and gaskets for the turbo kit I'm going to be in it like 2k you can't get an injection pump for a 12v cummins that cheap
Definitely swap to a diesel in a rig like that. Lots of power potential and still get good mileage. 7.3 powerstrokes are good motors. However 5.9 cummins are practically bullet proof and have potential to make huge horsepower on a budget and they're simple motors.
Wish the videos were longer. Great stuff
Put a 7.3 Powerstroke in it
If you decide to keep it an FE and want to build a monster, look up Survival Motorsports. Barry has plenty of videos of his builds on here.
.060 not a big deal for a fe block depending on core shift. You can bore em to 428 which is much more than .060 over.
Edelbrock aluminum Top end, weighs less than a stock 350 craprolet, and way more Power.
My cousin happens to be like your mindset and he builds drag and street car and rod truck toys and he prefers to sleeve motors rather than boring it out over 0.40
Quick in and out and back on the road.😂🤣😂
Should do a 90's 7.3 power stroke in it
16:41 cant do an oversized radiator to help with the heat
I mean while your already there just put a 7.3 in it
Having a factory ac compressor is cool- you should have seen/ felt how the original refrigerant worked in the day. You could actually freeze people out of the car in summer.
Throw you a 429 super cobra jet in it, or (something I’ve always wanted to do) find a 5.8 trinity motor out of the Shelby gt500s and slap in there
60 over on an FE is nothing. Punch it a little more, and you'll have a 406. Also, I could tell you had at least a 390 crank by the counterweights. They were chamfered for rod clearance (360 would have been square cut)
Please build a shiny clean truck..just one..not a rusty patina truck..just a clean clean truck with cool paint❤
The junk in the block is the problem. These engines are perfectly fine with an 060 over bore.
Pulled my 71 f100 for basically the exact same reason. Pickup tube was completely plugged as well.
I have a 78 f150 with orginal A/c that works
Put a 7.3 powerstroke in it. Those things are bullet proof
Bro, use an impact if youre worried about breaking bolts. It can still happen, but I've seen and broken more bolts trying to ease it by hand.
While we are at it 😂. Down the rabbit hole we go lol.
Rad. Engine tear downs and rebuilds are hella cool. Do you still run/recommend champion radiators?
4speed_garage and Dubwerks across the country are basically the same guy
Running that cold will sludge the oil. Hotter, is better.
Comp 268h cam and headers edelbrock pro former rpm intake and a good carb will tow no problem
Had a fairly mild built sbc 355 with a balanced rotating assembly and the competing cams xe 268h 477/480 lift 221/224 duration and it was kinda nasty in the K20 Chevy square body scrap metal and firewood hauler i had it in
And the intake manifold was a Holley street dominator
FE aluminum intake prices make me angry, but the weight of the original intake bother me more.
WIth all of the crap solid lifers and cams out there have you considered going to a roller rocker - lifter setup?
21:18 It all started with a leaking oil pan jeez atleast it wasnt total engine failure on the side of the road heading to an event
When it’s time for a new motor swap to a 6.0 power stroke
You should put a international DT 360 in it
I was thinking the same thing. Would be pretty unique but very capable and efficient.
It needs a 460 with Kaase heads.
i expected to see an aluminum intake so you don't throw your back out putting that big iron one back on lol
If you're going to swap a motor, if you do go with a gas option, I would put a 429 in it. Just a personal opinion I just like the 429.
Cummins swap! For the tow rig paired with an Allison 6 speed
Man diesel swap with twin turbskis would be sick
do a 12 valve cummins swap would be sick
What did u say 6.0 powerstroke with super 60 under the frontend 4x4? That would be interesting
I have two 97f250hds, one I'm the original owner of one that has a 460w 138k of easy miles on it w a bent frame. My second is a 212k w zf5. Im looking to do a clean up and power up of the old motor to put in the second truck. What would you do to make a RELIABLE good powered factory computer 460? Banks headers? a bigger bbk throttle body, injector changes, cam? What works, but like stock reliability? Not looking big power maybe just 375hp but still efficient?
Banks no longer makes headers for the 460. Stinger Performance makes an aftermarket ecu that uses the factory wiring and even uses a factory ecu shell. It swaps in place of the original. There's a guy on UA-cam named John Virgil (something like that) and he has videos with a turbo 460 using one.
Fordahlbilt sells a 7.3 swap kit including harness too put in other trucks and he’s in Los Angeles, California
7.3 powerstroke with either zf5 or 6 if you go diesel route just drop the body on a 6.0 super duty chassis since the 7.3 trucks all had leaf springs in the front.
You should definitely Detroit Diesel swap it, would be cool af
Dell oven cleaner will clean up that block and it won't leave no residue try it
That thing needs a a 6.0l power stroke
Hmm chunks in top of the heads hmmm flashs back when kevin frim junkyard digs oiled ur shop when he came to town
Are these stock intakes not like the cast 460s? They make more torque than any aftermarket intake.
Outside in when removing heads 😎
I’m possibly building a 352 fe for my 73 Mercury Cougar xr7 I initially got a 302 Windsor for it out of a 92 Lincoln but if I end up building the 352 I’ll swap it in. The original 351 Cleveland is long gone after it blew head gaskets long ago, I found head gaskets in the trunk for it.
Cool i would like to be able to own and tinker around with a 352fe
