But by the shape the body is in, I'd say it seems to have been kept inside and never been out in the weather much. HI Gas Monkey fans. I am Danny Orth in Oklahoma. Back in the 1980s, I bought a Boss 9 (as Richard calls it) from AL Burchette who owns Anns Chicken Fry on NW highway in OKC.. Jerry Harris was his mechanic I paid 5500.00 at that time which was my life savings. The Boss9 was purchased at Dub Richardson ford. Just like Richards car the Boss9 that I owned was purchased by a mechanic that worked at the dealership. It was taken apart and instantantly turned into a drag car. Mine had around 1100 miles on the clock. The previous owners kept blowing up the boss 9 engines so they had Gapp and Rousch build them a Boss 302 which was in it when I bought the car. HOLY CRAP was that a nasty boss 302. It had chevy aluminum rods and 14 to one pistons, a huge roller cam, tunnel ram with two 660s. The car still had the top loader and the traction lock rear diff with a 620 gear!!!! It was running a 29 inch slick so I would leave the line at 7500 and shift at 8000 rpms what a rush!!!! Dang when that car left it yanked the front wheels up and carried them around 15 feet then when I slammed into second it would pick them up again. That car was so loud and shook the ground when it idled that my mom used to come out of the house and tell me to turn it off so they could hear the news! The car would run 9.90s in good air and low 10s when it was hot! I took the car to Ardmore Raceway and that car broke something every time out, lol. One time it turned a roller lifter sideways and when I had the pan off cleaning the rollers out of it I noticed one rod had a crack. So I called Gapp and Rousch and those guys were so nice to me they said they had an extra rod and sent it to me for free!!! So I had to pull the drivers side head gasket and fix the rod. The car had copper head gaskets and was o ringed!! Had to order a head gasket from some guy in NYC who cussed like a sailor but he was the only one who could get me a head gasket at that time. Last time out at the track I had broken the detroit locker ring gear side bearing carrier. Fixed it and traded the car for an x top alcohol dragster that was know as the pepper express, to a guy named Don Stout in El Reno Oklahoma..... Have not seen the car since but it was Black and had flames. On the rear deck lid it had a guy in a knights suit of armor and it said Death Rides a Horse!!! Please if anyone knows what happened to that car will you let me know. I cannot afford it at the moment but would love to hear about it and see it once again. Thanks for reading my diatribe! I am just an old car guy who has had tons of cool rare hard to find cars over the years and wish I had every one of them back!!!!! I bet most of you folks reading this have similar stories as well. Take care and be safe and as Richard says, When you find a Boss 9 in ANY condition, GET YOU SOME OF THAT!
I had a 1970 Mercury Cyclone, 429 CJ, 4 Speed when I was 16-17 in the 80's... It was my dad's car originally. It was no boss, but I also had to chain down the engine because I kept destroying motor mounts. 🤣🤣
We also chained my granny's 275hp 327ci engine down in her old grocery getter station wagon..The kids they loved it before putting the chain on cause at night time we'd floor it and the engine would pop up and yank the battery and sparks came flying out lol.
no better way of playing your cards close to your chest than jumping out of the rental saying "WOW" and "That's really cool" in front of the sellers🤣😂🤣😂
Richard nice snag, i hope the bleep dollar moment satisfied both parties and you didnt lowball the great custodian of a classic so big respect. Even better would be you add it to your personal collection rather than tv flip it for profit deal. That car is special. I love what you do, hunt them but it fix it save it. i wish you well, job well done. I hope you can make it about take your time and do it right and properly save the classics, and occasionally let the big auction houses make you famous. Best wishes from Australia, home of the Falcon XB hardtop, thats my ride. Love your show.
I bought two '69 mach 1 mustangs while in high school in the 70's. I gave $350 for one and $400 for the other. Man I wish I still had them. They will always have a place in my heart.
Wow, this is the best Gas Monkey episode! If it was me and I know it might not be the best money play. I would have the original engine and trans completely gone through and put together so they could easily be installed. Then I would do whatever is necessary to the existing race drivetrain to have it operating perfectly then maybe do a super detail on the car and leave it in race livery. Maybe trailer it to a few meets every year so folks could see what they were racing back in the day. Normally I totally like original as sold back then cars but this one is pretty darn cool just as it is!
Everyone from the git go, knew Richard Rawlins was just goin to flip it, as is... But hey, it's all good! We still love him... Subbed, and always a thumbs up!
Man …being a child of the 70’s who grew up in the 80’s who had a best friend who had a 69 that i had to get running for him …. (Couple broke teens in the mid 80’s who knew little but loved cars, it was a huge moment when i finally got it to turn over ) ….it is so awesome to see this car “raced out” like that …and even though i think its a shame to do, but this has to be brought back to as original as it can be…which seems to be almost completely original ….thats history right there ,in either form .but if in original ,imo, its “ more real” if that makes any sense . Glad i found this channel ,i can now live vicariously through it 😂👍🏼🤟🏼✌️
Yep but with money like his and a car like this no reason to piss off the old man also whatever he paid was a great deal because that bleep sound was definitely too short compared to what he's gonna get out of it
Back in 1973 I beat a Boss 429 with street slicks and a front brake lock with my roomates 70 cobra jet Mach 1 with the Cleveland 351 two barrel and rock crusher four speed. They asked us if we wanted to race to the next light a half mile away and I told him to say Yes and when the light changed I just drove off and once rolling I speed shifted it and floored it. The front rose up on each shift and I saw a police car coming up to the intersection we were racing to and I turned on the left turn signal and downshifted into the turn lane and as I stopped, the 429 blasted past through a red light in front of the cop. My roomate was ecstatic about that race.
I think refurbishing the car as is, with it´s patina and rebuild the stock motor and parts to acompany the car whereever it goes. The option to put it back original has to be worth the most in both value and provinience. What a great find!
@@tedzehnder961 he accepted Richards lower offer without hesitation if you watch. The owner knew he could've said no but he said yes. Says a lot about the guy
My bro and I knew the Penners. My memory may be a little foggy, but the Penners ran the car in B/MP in early 70s. Pro Stocks, in '71, were running high 9s. I believe Penner's stang was running around 10.50s in B/MP. It had dual carb, two 660s. It set several class records for its time. An analogy would be what the factory stock showdown cars are running today, 7.50s. If you were running 10.50s back then, you were cooking.
Im surprised we didnt see Dennis crawling all over the car to read the numbers. He likely would have said something like "its the 31st model to have the stickers applyed at 60° Fahrenheit its the HOLY GRAIL"
I'm nothing the Richard and Dennis, but if they ever read my comments, they know, what that mustang means to me now you know why I want to work for these guys. God bless 🙏
For you young gear heads out there, one of the WORST things you can do to your crankshaft is to store it laying down. Over time it will bend just enough to whip and pound bearings if you ever use it again. Always stand it up on the rear flange..............Back in my day, I raced in NHRA, Chrysler Hemi and 440 cars. You could say a "dyed in the wool" Mopar guy, BUT, this has to be the coolest Mustang this old guy has ever seen. When they were "big", I don't think I ever saw one (a Boss 429, that is) on the streets of my hometown, Brooklyn, N.Y.
B Keeler bought the car from Penner and we ran it Tulsa after we put it back together. Kent Cannady put the motor back together. But it was in Sand Springs Oklahoma for around 20 years.
@@gearmeister yeah $3K for the magnesium valve covers alone! Being the lowest mile 429 Mustang in existence makes it a tough call. If the car was raced by a popular winning team and held some championship titles id leave it the way it is. Strictly on a max money profit it should be put back to original condition and youll still have a moster HM built engine and trans to stuff in something else.
I bought a EARLY 65 K-CODE mustang, (old race car), when I jack the front of the car up, the ENTIRE nose comes up, she is SUPER tight, no idea the miles, but, it went from a Road car to a track car instantly. 500 miles, maybe 2500, (not many)... I don't have time to restore her until I retire, I DRIVE a 65 GT mustang, (A code). Love these classics.
I miss my ‘69 Mach, had it from 18 to 28. I had to let it go to get more practical about driving. My ‘85 LX got me half way home one night and gave up the ghost. Couldn’t drive the ‘69 all year considering the 4 months of proper winter. Youth is wasted on the young, as they say, I’d love to have that car again.
I see Richard getting a financial revenge on Dennis on this car when done. Plus, I just learned more about Mustang's from that era in 30 minutes, than the research I've done in 35 years.
Back in 78 my neighbor had pretty much the same car. He had seen a lady driving it east of Los Angeles on the freeway and followed her home. She freaked out a bit and he said if you ever want to sell it give me a call. Two years later she called him.

Cool story and let me add...Furds that are fast, have some Chevy in them.
Im not reading all that
I had a 1970 Mercury Cyclone, 429 CJ, 4 Speed when I was 16-17 in the 80's...
Been there. Done that

I've always been a big fan of Mustangs.never knew about how special this year was. Very cool 😎
Jason's excitement was on display, love it. I was excited and had nothing to do with it.
When you find a car of this caliber, how could you not be excited?!
Nice find!
Congratulations on finding a real Boss 9.
Thanks for sharing the story. 👍
What an amazing car
Hats off to the guy for looking after it so well for so long
Im midway through this and watching Richards reaction is priceless... He is rubbing his head bald!!!!
We deserve to be updated on the future of this beauty. Please keep us updated on that.
Still Amazes Me. 55 years later...Barn Find One of a Kind !!!!!!!
no better way of playing your cards close to your chest than jumping out of the rental saying "WOW" and "That's really cool" in front of the sellers🤣😂🤣😂
Great to see Jason again👍👍👍
I bought two '69 mach 1 mustangs while in high school in the 70's. I gave $350 for one and $400 for the other.
Man I wish I still had them.
They will always have a place in my heart.
Don’t tell Dennis 😂
Bwhahahaha
Its probably his find not Richards
What he believes to be
@@danielkelly8756no
Thats who he will probably sell it to.
"I'm always listening " yes Richard you do need to bring him back GYSOT
This car deserves all the original parts with those crazy old school decals, it looks mint!
Everyone from the git go, knew Richard Rawlins was just goin to flip it, as is... But hey, it's all good! We still love him... Subbed, and always a thumbs up!
I restored two 1969 Mustangs, a 302 and a 351... this video brought back a lot of memories. I know every inch of these cars.
I was thinking up to 200k selling price, but I think I heard 150k price sold. It will sell 300K+ if restored to original condition.
@ 17:17, The hood is missing the aluminum trim piece at the nose... try to find an original if you don't have it as the reproductions fit poorly.
Should have kept it . The value of that car will continue to climb. What a find.
He made a huge mistake flipping it that quick.🤦🏻♂️ But Richard is nothing more than a used car dealer.
Great video Richard Rawlings! Get you some of that! 👍
“So there’s a little spot in there!!”🤣😂🤣😂
Man …being a child of the 70’s who grew up in the 80’s who had a best friend who had a 69 that i had to get running for him …. Glad i found this channel ,i can now live vicariously through it 😂👍🏼🤟🏼✌️
22:12 Richard knows he could have gotten it cheaper 😂
Yep but with money like his and a car like this no reason to piss off the old man also whatever he paid was a great deal because that bleep sound was definitely too short compared to what he's gonna get out of it
When they take your first offer ya paid toooooooo much!!
My roomate was ecstatic about that race.
your going to hell for lying!
Aww we never got to hear it fire up😢. We deserve to hear it, but where do you find 112 octane gas these days except an airport.😊
I think refurbishing the car as is, with it´s patina and rebuild the stock motor and parts to acompany the car whereever it goes. The option to put it back original has to be worth the most in both value and provinience. What a great find!
Thanks for serious and entertaining episode of gas monkey, that wasn't a bunch of kids riding around on go-karts..
Love the car, hope Jim was well compensated. He is a piece of US history that should be appreciated.
I'm gonna buy one of those when my rich uncle gets outta the poor house....... Great Find Richard !!!!
I can see Dennis chewing the bit over missing this one...GIT YA SOME O THAT ! Great find Richard...
Put it back all original but leave the paint and stickers alone. It would be a driver that has a history to tell.
I have to say I really enjoy watching these UA-cam videos versus the old show on tv!
Que: How about i dont pay you what we discussed on the phone? 😂
I hope he gave him more money than they discussed. If not? If the old buy didn`t want to bother doing any research and was happy about it ,oh well.
Man, Richard gettin it done son! 🤘💯
the holman moody engine, back when they were ford racing gods, is what has me blown away.
OMG what a hell of a find, wow
What a great story teller. Just listening to him makes the trip worth it
I would be jumping up and down like a little kid on Christmas if I bought that car 😅
Grandpa was loving those pain pills 😂. Had him excited and talking 😂😂😂😂
God bless 🙏
This is better than the TV show! I actually like Rawlings now!
There is nothing to like about this big mouth alcoholic...he is the reason for his own failures....
Dennis is definitely getting that car 🚗🚗 🚗🚗🚗
Guess I should have finished the video before I made my comment 😂
Jason will want to restore it
B Keeler bought the car from Penner and we ran it Tulsa after we put it back together. Kent Cannady put the motor back together. But it was in Sand Springs Oklahoma for around 20 years.
Only 1300 miles a 1/4 mile at a time is mind blowing. The Holman Moody Nascar engine is just crazy rare gold.
Holman Moody, you're right, there's serious history just in the engine
@@gearmeister yeah $3K for the magnesium valve covers alone! Being the lowest mile 429 Mustang in existence makes it a tough call. If the car was raced by a popular winning team and held some championship titles id leave it the way it is. Strictly on a max money profit it should be put back to original condition and youll still have a moster HM built engine and trans to stuff in something else.
Yeah 1300 miles 1/4 mile at a time?…..that’s 5200 races🤔 the old timer said he raced it about 30 times, it’s not adding up🤷♂️🤦♂️
I bought a EARLY 65 K-CODE mustang, (old race car), when I jack the front of the car up, the ENTIRE nose comes up, she is SUPER tight, no idea the miles, but, it went from a Road car to a track car instantly. 500 miles, maybe 2500, (not many)...
I don't have time to restore her until I retire, I DRIVE a 65 GT mustang, (A code). Love these classics.
30 PASSES X QUARTER MILE AT A TIME. DOES NOT EQUAL 1300 MILES.... BUT, COOL...
Fking home run!!! That candy red paint looks sweet.
I honestly hope it stays the same way. Its such a time capsule and will only carry that look with all its imperfections and perfection once.
Leave the fucking thing alone, get it running and enjoy it. But ya i forgot its the Richard flip it show. 😂
There is not like a classic Mustang, let alone this one! WOW! Hello from Miami's Classic Car scene!!
Also, this car isnt for richard. This car is for the collector that will keep it for what it is. Not as a quick flip.
That was a quick flip...
Now this is a beauty and a car worth keeping every single part for. The newer mustang will never be something like this
Gotta Love The Mustang 😎
It's bad @$$
This is a museum piece! What a story.
@PetersenMuseum u need talk to Mr. Richard
