Tom Scholz graduated from MIT and was working at Polaroid when he designed effects for his guitar, which were used on all Boston recordings. On this first album, Scholz played all instruments except drums. The singer with the amazing voice was Brad Delp. He did all the vocals. Every song on their debut album was great.
On the liner notes Tom states no synthesizers were used in this recording. Tom does all those fantastic sounds with the guitar and equipment he invented.
Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge this great band for it's contribution to rock and roll history. And you girl also have a killer smile and voice.
Those of us who were young when this first came out had never heard anything like it. And to this day, Boston songs are immediately recognizable by their unique sound. This is a perfect album. Every song a memorable gem. They debuted with perfection! I become a 60 year old teenager whenever I hear Boston. Watching you discover and enjoy it puts a big smile on my face.
I think the thing I liked the most about Brad Delp's singing was how fantastically he harmonized with himself, really making Boston songs a delight to hear...
You do understand right, that Brad did ALL of the vocals on the album, lead, backup and harmony vocals and Tom played all of the instruments except drums. The band was formed after the album was recorded by Tom in his basement.
There was no other sound remotely like this debut album from Boston that we heard on our turntables. It remains a definitive album for the decade and for all time. Tom Scholz was an unrivaled genius not understood by the music industry elites, and for that reason Boston remains ignored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (like Kansas, Styx, America, Blue Öyster Cult, Slade, UFO, Thin Lizzy, Ted Nugent, Triumph, The Guess Who, and Humble Pie. These and so many others dominated air waves, turnstiles, and record sales as they were cherished by fans like Boston, but the elitist industry scum continues to spit in the face of their fame and the fans they earned. So sad.) Brad Delp was and shall forever be the voice of Boston. He so brilliantly helped bring Tom Scholz’s genius to reality recognize the world over. 🪦 R.I.P. Rock-in-Peace Brad Delp 🤘🏻
Classic rock 101 It's great seeing younger generations experiencing this for the first time. this masterpiece NEVER gets old. Look forward to more great reactions and thanks
"Foreplay/Longtime" is one of the true masterpieces of rock music. One of rock's greatest moments is when the lead guitar comes belting out crisp and clear at the beginning of Longtime after the quiet build-up from Foreplay, All of Boston's album covers have the same space theme and tell a sort of continuing saga.
Yes! Yes! Yes! OMG you get it! So few people really recognize and appreciate the transition. Your face said it all. 😊❤ Can you believe everything you’re hearing on this entire album is only 3 people? Brad Delp did vocals, Sib Hasian played drums and Tom Scholz played everything else in a studio he built himself with more than a little equipment he designed and constructed by hand IN HIS BASEMENT. This is genuine genius. A masterpiece. And every single note played by hand. ❤
Your pure joy made me feel so happy… as an old family guy you are the daughter that parents dream of and be so so proud of…. Boston is incredible and your musical knowledge and experience really was enlightening… loved it!
The guitarist (Tom Scholtz) was an electrical engineer and created the equipment for the Boston sound. Very unique, and a lot of 80's artist's ZZ Top, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, etc. used his Rockman brand gear.
RIP Brad Delp🎸🤘This album was a must have for any rock fans in the 70’s! It’s a classic, still relevant today!🎸🤘All the notes are produced by guitars and keyboards. Boston used no synthesizers in their music.
Brad Delp did ALL of the vocals... Complete with 5 part harmonies ... Sometimes more.... Tom Sholz is a genius... He designed and built most of the electronics in the studio...literally ! He did Not play all the instruments. He did not invent auto-tune... Listen to the acapella version of more than a feeling...please.❤
Don't you love the sound of the electric guitar. What a great song to react to. Great vocal and song and a bright sound. Great analysis and as always great reaction.😊 Also, thank you for those Beautiful smiles of yours 😊❤
Tom Scholz is the founder, main songwriter, primary guitarist, keyboardist of the rock band Boston. Scholz is an MIT-trained engineer who designed and built his own recording studio in an apartment basement in the early 1970s. A fan of rock music throughout his teen years, Scholz began writing songs while earning his master's degree at MIT. The first Boston album was mostly recorded in his basement studio, primarily using devices he invented. After the success of Boston, he founded Scholz Research & Development, Inc. to develop and market his inventions, many under the Rockman brand. Scholz holds several patents related to his work at SR&D over the years. All this as well as being a very good musician and creative song writer. He was described by AllMusic as an "un-rock n' roll" figure who did not enjoy the limelight of being a performer, preferring to concentrate on music, production, and inventing new electronic equipment. When he recorded this, he was working at Polaroid Corporation as a senior product design engineer. Scholz had a keen interest in music and began recording demos in his home studio while working at Polaroid. He spent six years unsuccessfully submitting demos to record companies. Eventually the demos attracted the interest of Epic Records, who signed Scholz and singer Brad Delp to a recording contract. Scholz believed his demos were good enough for release as Boston's debut album, but Epic told Scholz to re-record the demos. Most of the guitar, bass, and keyboards were performed by Scholz, although other players were involved sporadically throughout the recordings, most notably drummer Jim Masdea. Epic did not want the album recorded entirely in Scholz's home as Scholz had intended (the label suggested using a recording studio), but most of what ended up on the album had indeed been recorded by Scholz in his basement.
It's hard for me to believe this album hit the shelves over 48 years ago!!! Wow, so many memories. Make no mistake, this album was a shot in the arm for rock and roll, at a time when disco "was in" , and man did we appreciate it!
As a musician myself, I really love that aspect of your reaction and comments.❤❤ This first Boston album is regarded as one of the greatest debut albums in Rock history. I have seen a lot of reactors just work their way through it song by song, because the track sequencing is really good on it as well. You could skip over the two that you've already done when you get to them or just react to them again now that you can absorb more details. "Gonna Hitch A Ride" is a huge hit for them, and based upon what I've seen so far, I bet you would really like it, and I bet it would make for a great reaction.
If you feel blown away by this band and album, (so far), in the year 2024 - how do you think it made us feel the first time we heard it? 🤯🤯 I was pretty young and I'm not ashamed to admit that I thought these guys might be from another world. Every time I hear Foreplay, I still can't believe what I'm hearing. This album is a masterpiece!! Great reaction Aaliyah!!🙂🙂
After a few painful years of the scourge of Disco, bands like Boston shone the beacon of hope that music was still alive and breaking through again. A perfect blend of Rock, Pop and Classical that was candy to my ears. Everywhere I went that Summer, this was the album being played. As a teenager, I could almost get Brad Delp's highest notes, but not quite. Even singing in a band years later and exercising my vocal chords on a nightly basis, I could never reach what he could do. I've always been in awe of the man's range and power. An amazing singer!
Thank you very much for reacting to this song Aaliyah - and thank even more for choosing the studio version, it is much better. My confession: I have looked at this cover for many years and, like you, saw some kind of spaceship. Only a couple of months ago someone pointed out to me that it is an upturned guitar 😇😇
Great reaction and analysis Aaliyah! Our world has so many varieties & styles of music and has featured countless talented composers, lyricists, musicians and vocalists! That being said, Boston is my favorite Band! And, of course, Brad's vocals are stellar! Thanks for doing this one - you can't go wrong with Boston!
Every song from this album was played on the radio almost daily (still are on classic rock stations), even this song as long as it is was played constantly. "Rock and Roll Band" is a great straight ahead rocker, "Something About You" has more incredible vocal harmonies and if you want more light and shade with beautiful call and response guitar solos check out "Hitch a Ride", great analysis and reaction!
This is one of the few songs ever produced where the lead vocals and backing vocals were performed by the same person. Tom Scholz was a phenomenal sound engineer and he even invented some of the equipment used to produce this and other Boston studio tracks! You hear the song as if it was recorded by a band but mostly it was Tom and Brad and a whole bunch of overdubbing in Tom's basement sound studio.
It’s always great to see that songs like this still have that impact on new listeners. Getting to watch you experience that with such joy is like a rediscovery for us Long Timers. 👍
One thing I always loved about Boston is Brad's vocals are so high it melds right into Tom's Guitar solos! Love your reactions Aaliyah! So glad you are sharing your experiences with your fellow musicians! Expanding their knowledge base of different kinds of music!
Yeah, Boston music will always make you feel good. It is the magic of their music. They always put a smile on my face. I am a bass player. When I was a kid and just starting to develop my own 'style', I discovered Tom Sholz. His bass playing is amazing! I would play along with Boston records and try to play like him. You cannot go wrong learning from a master. 😁
The image on the album cover is indeed a guitar, turned into a spaceship. Look closely and you will see the guitars. This album was recorded by artisans of the sound engineering, specially Tom Scholz, who spent a long time making the recording, he is an extraordinary music maker. he made this album on his own studio rejecting the company offer and demand on using the regular studio, because he felt that sound engineers didn't feel the music the way he wanted, and he was right. This is a jewel. You must listen to the whole album, because all the tracks are so well composed, balanced and produced.
I understand that for a lot of the sounds produced was from what they called Big Bertha, an organ they used. Also, if you look at the album cover again, look close the space ship is actually a guitar. And in the bubble on top is a city.
Hi Aaliyah, was in the 7th grade when this came out and not knowing how ground breaking it was and is to this day, Tom’s technical prowess front and center, Brad’s vocal’s are iconic and we were living on 4 TV channels that went off at 1am most nights and lived on the radio and the DJ’s the put there own spin on the music we listened to and cherished....Thanks for your sincere reactions and many blessings always.....sorry so long....
...those "spaceships" on the album cover are actually guitars appearing to be floating in space with blue flames shooting out of the sound holes...cool huh...love your reaction Aaliyah!
This song and album mean so much to me. Great to see your reaction to it and feeling the introspection and joy this song evokes. Brad Delp is simply one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Between him and Tom Scholz’s production mastery, they captured lightning in a bottle.
Tom Sholz designed and built all the guitar effects and still sells them to this day. He played all instruments except drums (Sib Hashian) rip. The bass lines on every song are IMHO a bass clinic. Very good reaction.🤘😎❤
Aaliyah, please listen to Boston's "Man I'll never be " This is one of Brad Delp's best vocal performances. I know you will love it. Choose the full length album version of this song. Colin from Scotland. P.S.. love your cheery personality ❤
Young lady. I sing and play. I watch other reviews. With that being said, it is always so nice to here you express your thoughts. Your training has given you a keen ear and you pick out points that the untrained singer, may not. You also very kind and positive. You were taught and show grace. Your parents should be proud. I enjoy you reviews. Blessings.
Aaliyah, great reaction to one of my favorite bands of all time. Brad Delp's vocals were second to none. While this song and album was mostly produced by Tom Scholz playing all instruments with the exception of the drums, there were also great musicians in the band over the years. Living on the North Shore of Boston, I have been fortunate to be able to see guitarist Barry Goudreau perform many times over the years. His work in RTZ and songs with Brad Delp like Dreams and Rockin' Away are amazing.
If you want to hear another incredible singer, I'd highly recommend "Stryper". The lead singer is Michael Sweet and I think you'll be amazed by his tone and his range. 😁
Great reaction Sista! I'm still waiting for you to get around to listening to some Stryper like you told me in a response to one of my comments almost a year ago. GB I'll be waiting.
Great reaction, it is covered already, but at the time this record was recorded the band Boston was just Tom and Brad with either Jim or Sib on drums. The album was recorded in Tom's basement. Brad sang all the vocal parts, lead, backup and harmonies and they also layered his voice. Tom played everything but drums. Later after the record contract was signed. The studio execs played around with a bunch of things, including having the drums redone since Tom as a novice recording engineer did not know how to correctly record the drums so an Engineer was sent to teach Tom the techniques. Also other friends during this timeline also added things to the album. Before the contract was complete, Tom and Brad had to hire a band to actually play this album live for the record execs or there was no deal. So the recording of the video 'More than a Feeling' shows the band that was hired, but the music played for that lip synced performance was the recording of just Tom, Brad and Sib the drummer. There is a wonderful video of the making of the original album. Still the best debut album of all time, unlike the supposed new record that included actual non sales, world wide sales, streams, etc. This album by Boston was and is the best ever debut albums and one of the best albums ever. There is not a single throw away song on it. Each song is spectacular or better. Some like all three songs on side one 'More than a Feeling'; 'Piece of Mind' and 'Foreplay/Longtime' are masterpieces. My advice is if you get a chance listen to the entire album and understand, basically a single person on all vocals, a single person on drums, a single person playing all other instruments. Recorded in a home studio with built and invented, old, etc equipment by people who were not professional technicians. No autotune. No special effects. No synthesizers. This album also came out at the height of 8 Track player sales. The real first time you could play an album on loop without touching it. So this was one of the albums at any party in the mid/late 70's that would play for hours and hours. Everybody liked the music. No matter, male/female, culture, favorite music genre. It was fun music. Thanks for covering this song, but the entire album is worth covering. Chris
When I say non sales, the new way they mysteriously buff up the numbers of artists sales is they count shipped albums, not actually sold albums. Meaning Walmart buys 500,000 copies of a CD, ships it to all their stores (back in the day) but it doesn't sell. The record company then needs to take those back. But the numbers shipped are used as the sales numbers because they are pushing hype and marketing. Where as Boston album sales were actually total album sales only in the US. Where nowadays they count world wide sales, streaming, songs downloaded, etc. So apples and oranges. :)
This album was recorded by Tom in his basement. It was mixed and mastered and virtually "in the can" before the band was signed or even completely formed. Add the brilliant musicians, together with the equipment Tom developed (Rockman), and you have a powerhouse of a band. And Brad was the nicest person in rock n roll...and out as well. The turnout out from all my music friends from Boston-based bands and beyond, for the tribute concert at the Pavillion on Boston's waterfront after his death, is a testament to how much he was respected.
Brad Delp recorded almost all of the vocal tracks on this album. The backup parts are obviously layered in the studio, but he quite often double-tracked the lead part as well. This means he’d record it twice so it would fatten the mix with each track panned slightly left or right. His accuracy in singing those parts exactly the same way twice was uncanny. Rick Beato has a great episode on More Than a Feeling where you can hear Brad’s isolated vocals, and it’s just stunning. Like hearing an angel sing. Totally worth looking up. Try Peace of Mind next! Cheers!
I saw Boston on their second big tour in '80 and of course there were no big screens or Veri lights back then and very little special effects but on Foreplay they had a big Pipe Organ prop rise up behind them...
Aaliyah, this was recorded in the basement of a small 4 room frame house that was rented by the leader, guitarist Tom Scholz. There is a video where Tom goes back to the house and the current renter had no idea who Boston even was or any history of what had happen all those years ago.
And one more thing...he recorded the entire album in his basement because when the record label signed him they wanted him to record it in their studious in LA but he couldn't get the sound he wanted so he made them let him do the recording in his home studio in his basement of the little house in Boston he lived in where that he created thecrecording studio.... unbelievable but true
Is great.
Yep I had a Rockman fed through a Marshal 1/2 stack what a killer sound.
On the liner notes Tom states no synthesizers were used in this recording. Tom does all those fantastic sounds with the guitar and equipment he invented.
Wicked insanely amazing!
That's how the Boston sound was so unique
and an organ
Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge this great band for it's contribution to rock and roll history. And you girl also have a killer smile and voice.
Those of us who were young when this first came out had never heard anything like it. And to this day, Boston songs are immediately recognizable by their unique sound. This is a perfect album. I think the thing I liked the most about Brad Delp's singing was how fantastically he harmonized with himself, really making Boston songs a delight to hear...
Your smile in pure enjoyment is infectious while bringing technical aspects. You go girl...
Your recurring heartfelt smiles and nods were beautiful. I'm so glad you enjoyed this as much as we have been enjoying it for nearly 50 years now....
The joy on your face when listening to this classic. Love it!
because there was plenty of foreplay.
An Aaliyah reaction vid is always a cheerful experience for me!
If I smiled that much, my face would crack into pieces and fall off...(keep that smile, Aaliyah!).
Arguably the greatest debut album of all time.
You do understand right, that Brad did ALL of the vocals on the album, lead, backup and harmony vocals and Tom played all of the instruments except drums. The band was formed after the album was recorded by Tom in his basement.
This is one song with contributions from other members. Namely, Barry plays the lead guitar parts. Otherwise, it is as you mention.
I'll always miss him Brad Delp RIP one of all time greatest singers ever
Was so blown away when this came out!!! 😃❤️
At 48 yrs old this album has aged quite well. Wait til you really want to get down tonight and listen to Smokin.

Alex Lifeson perfectly summed up the RRHOF during his acceptance speech into it. Anyone who hasn't seen it should check it out.
That's a great list of band names there for sure!
The RNRHOF hates Rock and Roll. If you're a leftist radical you're guaranteed to get in
SO so many people glance at the album cover and see space ships....but...if you look closely, they are stylized quitars with flames
And city skylines in the topside domes.
They're spaceships shaped like guitars.
They are actually Ovation guitars, round back fiberglass material.
Classic rock 101
It's great seeing younger generations experiencing this for the first time. this masterpiece NEVER gets old. Look forward to more great reactions and thanks
The chord progressions and keyboard work in the "Foreplay" part always make me think of Bach and Buxtehude.
And the spaceships are actually upside-down electric guitars.❤
The smile on this young Lady is just FANTASTIC. 💥💥💥👍🤪
"Foreplay/Longtime" is one of the true masterpieces of rock music. One of rock's greatest moments is when the lead guitar comes belting out crisp and clear at the beginning of Longtime after the quiet build-up from Foreplay,
All of Boston's album covers have the same space theme and tell a sort of continuing saga.
Great reaction video Aaliyah. Imagine this is 1976 and I was 21 years young. I absolutely loved this album.
Killer smile! I love young people enjoying music from my youth.

Don't you love the sound of the electric guitar. What a great song to react to. Great vocal and song and a bright sound. Great analysis and as always great reaction.😊
Also, thank you for those Beautiful smiles of yours

I was a teen when this came out.,I played it so much it started to wear out!
What a sensational set! Brad had such an amazing register, and a kind soul, the nicest guy in rock, R.I.P. 🥰
The entire album, start to finish, is well worth the listen! No duds anywhere!!
One thing I always loved about Boston is Brad's vocals are so high it melds right into Tom's Guitar solos! Love your reactions Aaliyah! So glad you are sharing your experiences with your fellow musicians! Expanding their knowledge base of different kinds of music!
Please react to More Than A Feeling and Peace of Mind. Brad sounds amazing in both of these songs.
She's done "More Than A Feeling." Agree it's "PEACE OF MIND" time.
Makes me feel like it’s my first time hearing this although that was Christmas 76’ damn where did time go? Rock on 🐾✌️🇺🇸
The spaceship is an electric guitar upside down. We was rock'in in the 80's.
Look at the cover art again. The spaceships are actually guitars.
For more “spacey” sounds try the band Rush’s “2112”.
The late great Brad delps voice was amazing.
I love the look on your face as the two songs tie together. It's the same as mine years ago, first listening to it. Ah, the memories.
Yeah, Boston music will always make you feel good. It is the magic of their music. They always put a smile on my face. I am a bass player. Brads vocal range to do all those harmonies is crazy good.
Boston - always a pleasure to hear.

Everything sounds so good

The segue from Foreplay to Long Time is one of the best and most powerful passages rock has ever produced.
Blessings.
Good choice!
Awesome song thanks for sharing
Aaliyah, great reaction to one of my favorite bands of all time. Brad Delp's vocals were second to none. While this song and album was mostly produced by Tom Scholz playing all instruments with the exception of the drums, there were also great musicians in the band over the years. Living on the North Shore of Boston, I have been fortunate to be able to see guitarist Barry Goudreau perform many times over the years. His work in RTZ and songs with Brad Delp like Dreams and Rockin' Away are amazing.
Love your reactions. Please react to Boston .. Piece of Mind. You’ll love it !
If you want to hear another incredible singer, I'd highly recommend "Stryper". The lead singer is Michael Sweet and I think you'll be amazed by his tone and his range. 😁
Michael sang lead with Boston for a while after Brad Delp passed away.
Great reaction. 🤘
A party staple in the late 70's! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
And the 80s
Bravissima e bellissima, come sempre!😍 Cara Aaliyah, sei la migliore!❤️
Your smile tells ev everything. 😊
If I recall correctly, Foreplay/Longtime was at the end of Boston's first album (vinyl and cassette), but was moved to #3 & 4 for the CD release.
Great reaction Sista! I'm still waiting for you to get around to listening to some Stryper like you told me in a response to one of my comments almost a year ago. GB I'll be waiting.
When I'm driving and this comes on the radio I can't get out of the car until it's finished 😅🎸🎶
Hi Aaliyah,
That spaceship on the album cover is actually an upside down guitar. RIP Bradley Delp - a great voice.
One of the Great Vocal performances.
I'm pretty sure Tom had Brad sing everything. He's singing with himself.
You've gotta hear Smokin by boston. The best instrument playing on the record.
One of the best '76 albums ❤👍🤘
OMG WAHATA SONG THE REACTION IS THROUGH THE ROOF❤
Great Choices Aaliyah.
Love your reacdtions
The spaceships on the album covers are guitars too btw. 😊
You will love all 70’s prog rock lol
Also, you would really love Extreme. ❤
Yes mam…their musicianship and vocals make them a very above average band.
Now you've done Boston, Chicago and Kansas. You've been around!
