Several people have mentioned about how Tom Scholtz and Brad Delp created this album in a basement. What's really amazing is that in this time frame the electronics did not exist to do what they wanted to do, so Tom Scholtz invented and built it. Absolutely mind-blowing!
Tom Scholtz did the entire album himself with the exception of a few instruments. Brad was invited afterwards. The record company asked about the band and so Scholtz had musician friends (talented) to join the band. The record company didn’t know that Scholtz gave them the demo tapes.

Funny thing is that this wasn’t recorded by a band at all. This is two people. The singer, and a guy named Tom Scholz, the songwriter, the dude who plays all the instruments on the album, the producer and engineer. You said it sounds precise, and that’s true.Tom was a MIT trained engineer. The band you see on the back cover was added after the record label signed Boston, read Tom. These musicians did add parts to the studio recordings, but primarily all parts were played by Tom and Brad on vocals. I came here to say basically what you did. Initially, the "band" was Tom, who spend I think 6 years perfecting the sound and the effects, most of which he created. To get the final sound, all he needed were Brad on vocals (all the harmonizing was with himself), and Sib on drums. Every time she said "the band" I kinda giggled because I know the story. It's true that Tom had to cobble together an actual band to tour, because he couldn't play everything in real time without the tape overdubbing to get the original sound. I kinda feel bad for her because going in blind on Boston is different than just about any other "conventional" band. Once she reads the comments or does some digging on the various WIKI pages, it will be obvious how clueless she was. But that's ok, we can forgive it because she is young and she felt the same impact we did almost 50 years ago when hearing Boston's sound. Back in the 70s, I was just learning how to play guitar when this album came out. I immediately fell in love with the sound. At the time, I lived in Boston, and my dad was a mechanical engineer who had gone to MIT. I showed him the album and asked him if he knew an electrical engineer from MIT by the name of Tom Scholtz. @Frankincensedjb123 Scholz graduated from MIT with a bachelors and a Masters in Mechanical engineering. What exact year did Tom deliver rack mounted guitar processing gear to your home? Scholz R & D was not formed until 1980. The first device that SRD put on the market was the power soak in 1980. The Rockman did not hit the market until later on in 1982. The first rack mountable Rock Module The Sustainor hit the market in 1986. The Stereo Chorus/Delay was released first in 1986 followed by the Distortion Generator in 1987. History is very clear that Scholz R and D Rack mounted gear did not hit the market until 1986.
Brad Delp is hands down the most underrated major rock vocalist of all time. Everybody who knows classic rock has heard his voice, and yet he's not in the public consciousness in the same way that Steve Perry and Freddie Mercury are. Thank you for reacting to this song and giving him some well deserved recognition.
Brad was an excellent fit for what Tom wanted to do, but in the pop milieu Steve was the only arena rocker that ultimately mattered and Freddie among the elite male pop singers.
Mickey Thomas is deserving of these accolades as well, though I don’t care for much he sang on. That guy was still doing the Jefferson Starship stuff in the original key and nailing it when our band opened for him about 5 years ago.
You state this band blew you away but your reaction blew me away. First time that I recognize a review that captured the very essence of Boston and the depth of the band as we did during its debut. Your reaction is the same as our ours was when it was released. We were as floored as you you were. Exceptional talent will always stand out as exceptional. Thank you for taking time to recognize exceptional creation.
Wow, love your reaction as always. You have literally just listened to the first Boston song ever. This debut album is widely considered to be perhaps the best in rock music history. And so you would be perfectly poised, like I've seen several reactors do, to work your way through the album in sequence, so many hits, everything on it is so good. I saw them when I was in junior high, and it was in a smaller indoor arena and I think it was $7.50 with all the extra taxes and fees, and we all just packed in and it was fantastic. They sounded so good with all the harmonies and just totally rocking out, but still really polished. It was really loud. It was perfect for that.
Growing up in the 1970s we had the same feelings when we heard Bostons music. Really enjoyed watching your reaction. I am from Boston and still have the album and still blast it. Never gets old in the summer nights.
Absolutely one of the best debut albums. These guys were perfectionists, took them forever in the studio to record, but as you said, you can hear the quality! The guitar player graduated MIT. Fantastic reaction staceyrpg
I love this song and I love your reaction to it. Boston is One of my all time favorite bands. This particular song marked a "before and after". 1977. I was 9yo and my uncles used to love it and some years later I "rediscovered" it while checking some "old" vynil records. Since then, I became a Boston fan forevermore. They got two álbums in the 70s and it was not until 1986 when they released their third LP "Third Stage". After that, almost another decade came for the next álbum. So the story goes. Im now 56 and still remain a loyal fan for the good stuf where real instruments Were played by real musicians to create the greatest music ever... Sorry. Got carried away. Next reactions: Foreplay/Longtime Amanda
For me, this song stands out as the single greatest rock song of all time. The album stands the test of time and will still be played 100 years from now. And let's not forget the incredible album art. What a masterpiece. What a gift.
Like so many 70's songs Boston makes you feel happy. I miss that about music since then. Happy and hopeful! Yes we 70's youth had the absolute best music ever to grow up with and express the emotions we wanted expressed in music as we headed to adulthood. Though its a product of the 1970's music scene, it truly is timeless... THE ENTIRE ALBUM IS A GEM! GREAT REACTION!
Great track. Much as I love “Feelin”,I wish the album cuts were reacted to as well, there’s some absolute gems in there,in fact, the whole bloody album is a 70’s rock masterpiece.
Oh Stacey I absolutely love you. You are so utterly genuine and honest it's an absolute pleasure watching your reactions. I have seen many from others and found them lacking. I love your honest emotions. And the fact you're a cat lady! Boston were amazing. Thank you for doing this reaction. Another of my favourites is A Man I'll Never Be. I listened to Boston at a very difficult time in my youth, and normally, I don't want to hear music that remind me of that, but your clips help me reconnect with the positive aspect of the time because of the happiness you display. Because of that, I now have an entire playlist of tracks you reviewed and that I enjoy again. Thank you. You are a lovely human being.
I was a freshman at Arizona State University in 1976. I heard this cut on the campus radio station and immediately went to the local record store, when I asked the guy at the store if they had the album he told me they just got it in and I literally got the first copy out of the box. I’ve been a fan ever since!
Hi Stacy! I’ve watched a bunch of your reactions and you’re the kind of reactor that makes me stick with you as you explore a number of different artists. You used a number of terms in your reactions that really summed it up about Boston - like togetherness, intentionality, the way the vocals blend with the guitars, etc. Tom Sholz, the lead guitarist and founder of Boston, has a Masters Degree from MIT and was working as an engineer for Polaroid while he was tinkering to create a new sound in a homemade engineering studio in his basement. He is extremely precise and meticulous and created many of the effects you hear in the records. Just perfection, and a huge part of my childhood. I love your raw and honest reactions and the emotion you show. Since you’re so open to discovering new music you haven’t heard, I also want to suggest a much younger group from today that makes me feel like what Boston did for me way back when. Please consider taking a look at a group of young sisters from Mexico called The Warning. Their music blends traditional genres - like classic rock, hard rock, pop and grunge - and turns it into something familiar yet unique. They’ve opened for Muse, Foo Fighters, Guns ’n Roses and headlined their own tours around the globe. They’re incredibly energetic and charismatic on stage so watching them live is the way to go. If you are so inclined, please check out their performance of “Hell You Call a Dream” from Pepsi Center. Or “Automatic Sun” from Tecate Pa’l Norte Festival (or from their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel in June). All versions are on their UA-cam channel and won’t get blocked. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I second this comment about The Warning! Anything from the Pepsi Center concert is a great place to start. Best live band I’ve ever seen…and I’ve been going to concerts since the Boston days.
The album is considered to be one of the best debut albums ever. The music was written by Tom Sholz. Recorded in his basement, Tom played every instrument except drums (played by Sib Hashian,) and Brad Delp singing all vocals. No cut and paste in those days. All overdubs had to be replayed and resung directly to tape. They became a touring band with the addition of Barry Goudreau guitar and vocals, Fran Sheehan bass. Every track on this album can stand on it's own as a huge hit. Most popular songs for reactors seem to be "Foreplay/Long Time," and "Hitch A Ride." Hope you enjoy your trip down this rabbit hole. Looking forward to sharing your experience.🤘😎❤
Tom Scholz, the mastermind behind the band, was a perfectionist when it came to the recording and production. That's why it sounds, as you said, so cohesive. Brad Delp is one of the great singers.
What a Band!! One of the best live bands I ever saw! Stacey, I have seen Boston live 5 times. my Favorite show was in Huntsville AL. I was 4th row from the stage. You could see their faces. So AMAZING!!!!
48 years later… and never gets old. Thank you for playing the album cut instead of the music video. The latter leaves out the whole middle verse. Now, blow your mind by listening to EVERY SONG ON BOSTON’S DEBUT ALBUM!!! Made in Tom Scholz’s basement! I kid you not!
Stacy, I am a close to 70 year old guy who loves to watch reactions of young people being blown away by the music from my youth. You, without a doubt give the most honest and heartfelt reactions of all of the reactors that I watch, so authentic. Keep up your excellent work. The whole Boston first album is amazing. My favorite is “Smokin”,.✌️
Tom Scholz is an amazing feller. He started writing tunes while going to M.I.T. After getting his Masters in mechanical engineering he goes to work at Polaroid while building a home studio. He recorded most the album there and on his initial demo's played all the instruments except the drums and vocals. He built his own custom guitar effect pedals to get the sound he wanted as well. He even had his own line of guitar effects under the name 'Rockman'. Sadly the company failed after 14 years. His pedals are highly valued collectors items now. "Foreplay/Long Time" next perhaps. The instrumental song, "Foreplay" he wrote while still in school at MIT. Cheers.
Intentionally and together was exactly what Sholtz had in mind. Collecting and orchestrating the immense talent at his disposal was a MONUMENTAL feat. This album IS monumental.
Excellent reaction! I was getting sympathetic goosebumps while watching you get yours! You will love this band, as you go forward. It's an all-time classic! Check out "Foreplay/Longtime", "Smokin'", "Don't Look Back", just as a start! Lots of great music from Boston!
This album has to be in the top 5 debut albums. No song on the album disappoints every one is top shelf. Listen to the songs one by one you will love ❤️ it.
I bought this album and KISS Alive II with my own money at a K-Mart when I was about 10. I played the crap out of these albums and they still hold up today. Great music!!
I just discovered Stacy with this reaction video. Looking back through her other videos, she's hit some of the greatest songs of the 70s and 80s, and has still only scratched the surface.
Brad Delp was the lead singer. May he rest in Peace. It's nice to see the younger generation looking beyond what they call music today which to me all sounds the same. And they actually will listen to the music of my era and can appreciate it and really still be blown away by what we took for granted every day in my day and age.
I remember playing in the yard with my brothers and some friends when I first heard this song. My dad was working in his shop with the cassette playing. I’ll never forget hearing that first chorus blasting from the shop and it stopped me dead in my tracks. I was mesmerized. One of the greatest albums/songs/Rock bands of the 20th century. More Than a Feeling is a masterpiece along with the rest of the album. Timeless tunes.
Songwriter and guitarist Tom Scholz was an accomplished electrical engineer and built many of the electronic devices used to create their signature sounds on this album. Bands did not sound like this before this album.
This great song by Boston took the radio by storm in 1976 when I was a senior in high school and luckily I got to see them in concert that same year as well!
Flip the album cover upside down and the spaceships turn into guitars. This is probably one of the best debut albums in rock history, every song is great.

@@neechee5150 It sounds like Franklin just got called out. 😂
A man I'll never by Boston is another classic.
Underated gem
Agree 100%.
It's heartbreaking 💔
I love this song. It's almost magical. Every time I listen to it, it moves me deep inside and touch my soul.
Your reaction: yeah, pretty much our reaction too in the 70s when this came out! Such a timeless song, very happy you love it.
one of my favourite songs of all time. outstanding performances by all parties, the vocalist, the drums, guitar parts etc...superb
Great Job Stacey!! I think all of us felt the same way the first time hearing Boston!! This WHOLE ALBUM is FIRE!!!
Oh, I forgot to say that I got goosebumps multiple times watching your reaction and cranking it up in my headphones.

You’re in for a treat with this band.
BEST. DEBUT. ALBUM. EVER!!!!!
Absolutely.
BOSTON literally changed music forever !! One of the most influential bands ever,
For me, this song stands out as the single greatest rock song of all time. The album stands the test of time and will still be played 100 years from now. And let's not forget the incredible album art. What a masterpiece. What a gift.
The way things seem to be going, the 70s will be remembered for Kraftwerk and Bowie, largely as antecedents to Madonna and hip hop.
such a great song ♥
Greatest 70s summer band ever. Riding through the Berkshires in my truck in the summer, Boston CRANKED on the stereo. The best!
Boston Rocks. go ahead and go down that rabbit hole.
Boston, one of my very favorite groups with one of my favorite songs of all time. Fantastic albums with so many great songs.
Their song “Hitch A Ride” from this same album is my #1 favorite song of all genres. Recommend listening
Tower Records? That’s where I went.
Real music was made back then by so many very good bands. Your reaction proves that ❤
The 70s where the NUKE BOMB IMHO
Peace of mind is still and forever will be my favorite Boston song. Some of the best song writing I've ever heard
My favorite song definitely, Boston was a force. Everything they did was gold. Cheers, from Boston!
This whole album was always such a great road album especially during the spring and summer. Loved the 70’s.
Best first album of ALL TIME !!!!
Hard to argue against your claim.
One of the all time classic rock songs
Cheers.
From the first time, I heard Boston when I was a kid they’ve always been one of my top bands. Tom Schulz, and Brad Delp, enough said! RIP.
Intentionally and together was exactly what Sholtz had in mind. Collecting and orchestrating the immense talent at his disposal was a MONUMENTAL feat. This album IS monumental.
Who else watches Stacy's reaction and gets taken back to 1976 when they first heard this song come on the car radio?🙋♂️
Thank you Stacy❤
I love this album. I wore this and ELO's Out Of The Blue out when I was a teenager.
Fav band/lead singer/album of all time. Nearly 50 years and I still get excited when it plays
More Than a Feeling, Piece of Mind, and Foreplay/Long Time, might be the best three-song opener in rock & roll history.
Thank you for cheering me up and making my evening My wife just survived chemo and cancer Thank you for making me feel younger again ❤
I bought this album and KISS Alive II with my own money at a K-Mart when I was about 10. I played the crap out of these albums and they still hold up today. Great music!!
Yea, good value for the money both of those albums.
@@chriswiedeman2956 My brothers had that KISS album. I used to listen to it all the time as a kid
A band way ahead of their time. I graduated in 1981 and this was my favorite band. Even today it sounds in sync with all music. Such a great band!
EVERY song on this album is this good. I wore the grooves out on my album as a teen.
love this channel- just found it- now you know how we felt when this first came out- our minds were blown also- and still are!!
Boston is ear candy. I agree with those who want Foreplay/Long Time next.
Really enjoyed your reaction. You've gotta check out their debut album. Every song is fantastic. Welcome to the rabbit hole that is Boston.
Best reaction I've seen to this song yet.
Absolute genius! He's a tall fealla too! 6'5"
This great song by Boston took the radio by storm in 1976 when I was a senior in high school and luckily I got to see them in concert that same year as well!
Flip the album cover upside down and the spaceships turn into guitars. This is probably one of the best debut albums in rock history, every song is great.
Great reaction! Boston is phenomenal! One of my favorite bands of all time. Brad Delp, the lead singer, in my opinion has one of the best voices in rock and roll. He’s been gone for 17 years now. Sad. RIP
Their first two albums were a huge part of my high school soundtrack. Not a bad song on either one.
Thank you Stacy! I am a 70 year old guitarist and watching you discover this band took me right back to the pure joy I felt when first hearing this song!
My older brother once told me to chech out Boston and Chicago because I liked TOTO. And yes, they're very much a musical predecessors.
With that said, Chicago - If You Leave Me Now and/or TOTO - Pamela next (would say Hold The Line, but I'm pretty confident you've heard that one somewhere... won't even mention Africa 😂)
Stacy, love your reactions. You are so much fun to watch listen to the best music from the 70s and 80s. Boston is still one of the best best
Good morning beautiful young lady, man I 9 years old in the 70’s when I heard their music for the 1 time, even though I did not know a word in English, I felt involved with the music. I remember I was in El Salvador Central America. I have very long hair. I feel a bit of sadness because it seems like it was only yesterday 😢😢😢❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Classic 70s rock, lived it still love it. The best there ever was. So much talent. Love from Scotland.
