Try Lucy Thomas. Alleluia and or The prayer. She does a Duet with her sister in the prayer. I love how you describe the way a person sings.I would love to hear your description of these two songs
The other great lead singer voice of the Grunge era is Chris Cornell (R.I.P.) of Soundgarden (and Audioslave). I recommend Soundgarden's biggest hit, "Black Hole Sun". I'll undoubtedly get ripped about Layne Staley (R.I.P.) of the band Alice in Chains, and Scott Weiland (R.I.P.) of Stone Temple Pilots, and you should absolutely listen to some of their songs to get a real feel for the Grunge movement as a whole.
I cry when I hear this song. It sounds like a grown man crying, wailing about the loss to him of a woman he loved so dearly, that he worshiped but she moved on.... Oh my gosh. I love Pearl Jam.
I’ve always loved Pearl Jam & Eddies voice blew me away the very first day I heard it many years ago. This is my favourite version of this song, because it really pulls on the feels for him which makes the feels pull on me & I just want to give him a hug & cry with him! I love Pearl Jam & just about every song. But this one is my favourite because of the emotions he makes me feel with those lyrics. I think most of us have been there. 😢
@@Shake69ificationgreat song for sure but so many of their deeper cuts are also amazing. Wash, breath, garden, oceans. His vocals on W.M.A off Vs. are so soaring and atmospheric. I could go on but hell they have over 300 songs. Release- live in Holland is a religious experience. Definitely look that one up.
“I know one day you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in someone’s else’s sky but why can’t it be mine” for anyone that’s experienced heart break, this is one of the best worded lyrics on what it’s like. This song always brings tears.
In an interview he said the unplugged set. This was the hardest song to preform. The hurt was still there and very painful. A lot of his inflections were him just holding his tears and emotions back. But the end he said he just let it all out. And the audience applauding is what kept him from losing it.
My late wife used to say Eddie's voice was like sandpaper that you wanted to feel on your eardrums. I drove her to North Carolina to see Pearl Jam and it was one of the best concerts ever!
That raspiness, that scratching of the voice, like claws scratching on rocks, it's a form of art that is disappearing, few people are teaching it anymore, and it's a beautiful way to convey and capture emotions as you can see in this song. I hope this way of singing doesn't disappear.
The song is a Sun/Earth metaphor throughout. The Earth requires the Sun, the Sun would be just fine without it. Cautionary tale to making someone the center of your universe when it's not equally felt.
Yeah, you can see several times that the band is watching him intensely to make sure that he was ok. they were so worried about him the whole time. Beautiful tragedy.
Pain... pain causes those wonderful sounds. Everything you've ever been through, Everything you wish you said or done just comes out in raw cries from your soul.
It always makes me so happy to see the reaction of someone that I know wasn't alive when this originally aired, or was way too young to remember it. I remember this MTV unplugged episode vividly, and Pearl Jam was definitely a huge part of my younger life. His voice is so unique. You instantly know who's singing.
Eddie Vedder goes beyond technique. As a singer, he doesn't do all these inane runs, and he doesn't have a super huge range. But in my opinion, there is no other singer that can convey as much sheer emotion as Eddie.
You need to listen to Temple of the Dog, "Hunger Strike." Chris Cornell wanted to pay tribute to his deceased friend, Andrew Wood, the singer for Mother Love Bone. Chris teamed with the surviving members, and new singer Eddie Vedder to make a tribute album, and Eddie would join the members of Mother Love Bone to form Pearl Jam.
I love Eddie, Pearl Jam is my favorite band ever, but if she’s going to do anything by temple of the dog… Say hello to Heaven is the one. Really just do the entire unplugged album, and then do Alice In Chains unplugged, and then Nirvana unplugged… All three killed it 🤘🏼
I love these (semi-) acoustic sets where you can really hear the qualities of the vocalist - and the other musicians, too. Great analysis Maggie - thank you.
Oh Meg. I know Im likely you're parents age, but when Pearl Jam were doing thier thing they were UNSTOPPABLE !!!! Im more of a heavy metal guy but Pearl Jam was incredible. Thanks for the review
If you liked hearing Eddie sing, I highly recommend Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike. Eddie sings backup for Chris Cornel and both of them singing together is pure vocal magic.
I have been a fan since their debut, way back in the 90's. So emotional, and like a barely contained explosion feeling. definitely check out "Jeremy" next.
10 million people could cover this song and still never deliver the same performance making you truly believe and feel their pain and love for said person as he does in this performance.
This is truly a very powerful performance-indicative of the ‘big guns’ (him, Layne, Chris, etc) - of that era. They just had a way of plucking the strings of your soul. They didnt just sing - they push out sounds with such emotion capable of bringing people to their knees (so to speak). They go ALL IN - and we go with them.
Vedder is my king. I was 18 the first time I saw them on Mtv for the alive video and was hooked. His voice is all his own and you always know it the minute you hear it. Listen to him talk and his singing voice makes sense! I have only gotten to see them 3 times and I cry at least once every show.....
The rasp is “fry”. If you can do the sound from “the grudge”, you can do the gravel sound. You should check out Will Ramos’s laryngoscopy vid to see distortion in the throat.
You might've been thinking of Chris Cornell, they not only have the capacity of get you in your feels but their voices are amazing AND they were really good friends too
This song was very personal to Eddie. It was about a very bad break-up. You can see how his body language changes through out the performance. his hands start up and he is a bit open, then his hands and arms close up when it starts getting more painful, and then end is just pure agony. If I remember, they rarely played this song live because of the emotion. A great follow on is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. It highlights Chris Cornell and Eddie as singers.
You won't hear music made today like this . My generation which is Gen X , WE GREW up in the two best generations, kids of the 80s and teens of the 90s.
He didn’t want to put this on the album because it was too painful for him but they talked him into it. When he says All I taught her was EVERYTHING, he then whispers that’s ALL. Only in this version. It’s killer. Then his flip to his head voice back down to chest in one motion no breathe is amazing.
I read an article that shortly before the night of this performance that he did this concert while having the flu. But yet he still went out and totally crushed this concert!!
Don’t mean to offend you but please please do not compare Eddie Vedder to John Mayer. Nothing against John Mayer but Eddie is in a whole other level. Seen both of them live and John Mayer is no where close to Eddie. Good reaction though.
Spot on! His voice is more along the lines of a Jim Morrison or Billy Idol, kind of… But I think his voice is one of the most original I’ve ever heard. I think Elvis would have loved his sound.
Temple of the dog "hunger strike" which was pearl jam and sound garden as a super group. Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell voice's on that song are amazing. Great reaction!!!
i love the video of him playing the Ukulele singing "Here comes the sun" in South Africa for the Orphanage (i believe thats what it was), some people can just captivate in any situation. He tells a funny story then too lol
One of the greatest live performances captured on video. Eddie's gift is/was his ability to put so much emotion into his singing. 30 years later, he's still doing a great job but those early years...wow. Incredibly, he was somewhat ill that day and was unsure about singing, and that may explain any "cracks" in his voice, but many feel that it added to his sound, not detracted from it. Another great live song to watch is of Pearl Jam live at Pink Pop 1992 performing their song Porch. It is somewhat interesting from a singer analysis point of view, but more so in the complete performance. 🎶 (lol I couldn't find the emoji because I was looking for it to be black but it's blue here on YT, lol)
13:27 John Lennon once asked Paul McCartney "how'd you get that gravel?" -"It just comes out on the top of your lungs". And then years later, Paul asked John the same thing and he gave the same answer. It's the magic, it's fickle, but I do believe singing rock and roll every day makes it happen over time
This song was about his wife and their divorce. He actually teared up after this performance. He wiped his eye with his sleeve and he had to take a few moment to compose himself. You can see it at the very end of this video. It's just as powerful as the performance, itself.
Once of the nest vocalist in rock in the last 50 years. Chris Cornell and him were in a band together for a minute look that up. Beautiful listening to them two harmonize together.
To me, this is the signature song for male heartache. all of us that have experienced the loss of love from a woman we truly cherished knows exactly how he felt writing this song. this is powerful... much like Sugarland's Stay. Anyone who's not seen that official video should go check it out. Another great singer in pain, and just like Eddie... brave enough to share that pain with the rest of us so it can comfort us in our time(s) of need...
I didn’t know Eddie was sick on this day. No wonder why all the band members were checking on him the whole time. He still nailed it. And Chris Cornell 😇knew he has this in him the first time he heard him. 🙌🏼👏🏼🤟🏼
I Believe Eddie’s Vocal Performance Is So Epic Here Is B/c He Messes Up The Lyrics When He Missed..”I Know She Gave Me All That She Wore”…I Think It Pissed Him Off He Throws His Head 2 The Side & Gives A Little Embarrassed Smile 2 The Crowd.. Then He Opens The Flood Gates & Unleashes One Of The Best Live Vocal Performances IMO…Only A True Professional Can Pull Off!!
The starting of the 2nd verse was improvised. He didnt sing it that way on the album. And also the outro. But now this is the only way I can hear it. I STILL get goosebumps from it.
A little history on Unplugged. Unplugged on MTV arrived right after the Milli Vanilli controversy where they won a Grammy and then had to come out and admit they lip synced everything and it was other people singing the music. Unplugged was MTVs way of ferreting this stuff out. You had to be able to prove your chops, play and sing well without any electric or electronic help. I really wish they'd bring this back.
And then even after she read all the lyrics she doesnt realize the we belong together was ad libbed for this performance. He didnt even want this song on the album cause it hurt so much. It's easier to see if you've had a similar experience.
A term I heard used to describe Eddie’s vocals is “marble mouth”. This metaphor is basically the placement of R or err sounds, where they normally wouldn’t be. See also lead singer of Creed.
Any time I see a new reaction to "Pearl Jam - Black" I'll watch it just to see how different people react to their first listen of the song. I'd suggest checking out some Mike Patton stuff as he has a 6.5 octave range and is versatile in his vocal styles. His stuff with Faith No More like Midlife Crisis, Ashes To Ashes and I Started A Joke will give a little insight to his talent.
It is not about the technicallity, its about emotion, love, anger, sadness he put in his song, his raspy and fast verbrato voice are Eddie's natural voice, try feel their songs, if keep relying on texhnics, tempo, measures, etc etc. your just like a human metronom....
If you could understand all the lyrics, Vedder wouldn't be singing the same way. Vedder's vocal choices are not always meant to be intelligible, they're meant to be a musical instrument a lot of the time; they convey the emotion, even without the literal content. It's a trade-off, but a great one.
This performance has a LOT going on. If I remember correctly, orignally, this was part of early demos (instruemtally) by Mike McCready and Eddie was presented with these tapes and came up wtih the lyrics / vocal performaance as an AUDITION to join this band. The subject matter of the lyrics was incredibly personal to Eddie and he was NOT happy with the popularity of the song and never intended for it to be a big hit that so many people would know. It was SUPPOSEDLy about a very personal relationship that ended for Eddie that he did not wish to end. Then; the unplugged performance happened as it was a big song for them. So, they did it on unplugged and Eddie forgot a bit of the song so early on it went in a bit of differnt direction lyrically (I prefer it ^_^ ) and later in the song he, again, went in a different direction and imporvised lyrically when he started saying WE BELONG ... WE BELONG TOGETHER - which is NOT on the studio version. It is alreadya HIGHLY emtional song but in the live performance it elevates all of that for the audience and the performer to be something that could potentionally be considered one of the ultimate RECORDED emotional performances of a song of all time. Very nice reaction ^_^
I have a friend who just broke up with his gf. And when we were drinking and it's a hard drink. I started to play Black as background he ignored it first. "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why can't it be mine". When he hears this part he started to be quiet. Suddenly he stand up and begins to throw stuff.
In all honesty no disrepect but who cares about the technique in a performance like this... this is raw artistic expression... just sit back and enjoy... no need to critique or analyze every different line... just take it in
@Priddy Fit "man who sold the world" was the number 1 song from mtv Unplugged. Obviously, if a whole show is number 1, there is a song that is part of the reason. Not that this song isn't up there, but Nirvana will always have that place in history.
If you are interested in hearing original sounding singers perhaps you will consider reacting to Elizabeth Fraser of the Coctau Twins/This Mortal Coil. Songs I would suggest are Song to the Siren (live) and Iceblink Luck.
My cousin is in 2 rock bands called majestica and sabaton his name is tommy reinxeed johansson he does loads of covers you would love aswell like abba, power of love, sound of silence, hallelujah, he does christmas songs
Yea. That wasn't Eddie being artistic at the end of the song. That was pure emotional pain being radiated into the atmosphere via his voice. Its a very personal song for him, and he completely lost himself in it for a few moments, there
There are not a lot of singers who can convey these kinds of raw authentic enlived emotions and write such touching lyrics drawn from their own real life experiences like Eddie Vedder. The songs that he wrote on request from Sean Penn for the movie "Into the Wild" are such masterpieces. The song "Alive", that he wrote about the death of his father that he never got to know crawls under your skind into your bones. In fact, all the songs that he wrote and sang are good. I heard him sing the song "You can close your eyes" (James Taylor song) with Natalie Maines during "Voices for Justice" at the WM3 rally August 2010 in Little Rock, and it was incredible. Never heard somebody sing such a beautiful little song while impacting so deeply.

Song melts hearts even as hard as mine.
“Yeah uh huh-uh huh” with that head move got me busted out laughing 😂🤣😆
This is a broken man from a woman that broke him. It comes from the heart
Those sounds you heard.. those are the sounds of actually living the words you wrote and sing... you can't mimic it unless you have lived it.
In all honesty no disrepect but who cares about the technique in a performance like this... this is raw artistic expression... just sit back and enjoy... no need to critique or analyze every different line... just take it in
I think that this and Snuff are the two greatest unplugged performances ever.
Alice In Chains Unplugged's Layne Staley vocals are heart-wrenchingly sad and beautiful at the same time
Nirvana will always be number 1 in every list of MTV Unplugged. Other notable performances would be STP and Queensrÿche along with these mentioned.
@@jamesestelle7260 Nirvana as far as a whole show, yes. These songs as individuals though.
@Priddy Fit "man who sold the world" was the number 1 song from mtv Unplugged. Obviously, if a whole show is number 1, there is a song that is part of the reason. Not that this song isn't up there, but Nirvana will always have that place in history.
My favorite of all MTV Unplugged performances.
If you are interested in hearing original sounding singers perhaps you will consider reacting to Elizabeth Fraser of the Coctau Twins/This Mortal Coil. Songs I would suggest are Song to the Siren (live) and Iceblink Luck.
Song of the Siren most definitely pretty please
My cousin is in 2 rock bands called majestica and sabaton his name is tommy reinxeed johansson he does loads of covers you would love aswell like abba, power of love, sound of silence, hallelujah, he does christmas songs
Your cuz is incredible bro been a big fan of his for a long time now
Thank you...i appreceate it man
Everything your saying yes and he is doing it live too.
that vocal style you mention in the beginning Eddie Vedder was the originator of that sound.
