His voice was in its prime here. Unfreakingbelievable.
#Ann...you said it: "Unfreakingbelievable"
So was Neal's guitar playing!
I'd give anything to see this journey concert in person
Amanda Kreider - Sorry, no time machine, but you can buy a DVD of this concert from Amazon.
His voice is still golden! Have you heard his album Traces? Steve still has it!
You know who never gets credit?
The sound man. The man who ran that soundboard is FANTASTIC. And remember: this was the 80's ... digital cheating didn't exist yet.
Amazing job.
Probably Kevin Elson.Worked with Lynyrd Skynyrd as well.
U r so right
So true. They should get credit to.
tell it like it is!! :)
The keys are bit too loud in the mix. Otherwise faultless.
Hands down best concert I’ve ever seen. Steve Perry’s voice, Neal on guitar…everyone was at peak. Incredible performance.
Lucky you. Wished I could have seen them live.
@@paula6439 Was 81..i think??..haa..in Huston?..AMAZING...hehehe..yes..wish you could have seen them...AWSOME...
@@paula6439 No you don't you be old like us always better to be young
I was there...One of the best!...late fall 1981 - @The Summit Houston Texas, Loverboy opened the show...lower prom seats Neil's side....incredible!!!
Amen my brother
A show of hands if you will go to your grave loving steve perry and journey
You seem like the kind of person that loved every minute of the 80s
Hell yes!
I want them to take me to my grave with a Steve Perry song!
Yes
Agreed!! Saw them in the eightes and it was the first concert my oldest son saw as well !!🥰God bless you, Steve Perry! So happy the Lord preserved and restored your voice!! It's a healing miracle that has increased the faith of all who have heard and witnessed..... thank you for your song!!!
This dude even carried the high note towards the end of guitar solo break...but the cameras didn't pick it up in time...WOW!!!...He was phenomenal!!!...Steve Perry was the voice!!! ...No question!!!anybody who wants to dispute, can go slap themselves in the mirror...
Camera man was busy zooming in on guitarist's tight jeans etc.. lol!
it happened again lol ua-cam.com/video/KPbceip4qqI/v-deo.html
Steve perry is and always will be the voice.
2:15 right? Yes I know!!!!
This audience probably paid $10 to witness this display of utter genius. Lucky folks.
13 lol
I believe my tickets were like $48 for floor seats center back in the day.
We just ran this concert on a projector sending the image to a box truck we put a white sheet on. We had a great sound system set up. 200 people showed up and everyone had a great nite under the stars watching Journey!
AWESOME!!!
Awesome indeed!!! Great music with a great Japanese projector & kickass sound system played at close to maxxx volume & naturally a wide variety of quality local & imported hard booze (rum, vodka & whisky mainly)......Heaven!!!!!
WOW that is fantastic!
I wish I was there!
Bravo! 👏 👍❤️
I’ll never get tired of hearing “You’re on your own-For Tomorrow!”
Same here!
Even live he hits that soaring high note during the first guitar solo...unbelievable.
This man, is incredible, with his voice. I don’t know how he sang those super high notes for 10 years. I’m surprised he has a voice left, what talent….
Whoo, the tempo! Almost twice as fast as the album version.... how the hell did Perry even breathe properly to sing at this pace?
🤣🤣🤣
Steve Perry is the voice of Journey. Irreplaceable. Best vocalist ever. Love you, Steve Perry.
Not enough people talk about how great a drummer Steve Smith is. He is actually one of the best technical drummers in rock history! Criminally underrated!!
🤟🏻
Thought the exact same thing before i saw your comment. The drums stand out in this performance, atleast for me.
Finally someone mentions a band member other than Perry. Steve Smith is the best musician on stage here (and they are all excellent). Today Smith is regarded as the best all around drummer in the world according to some Drummer magazine.
I have his work with Vital Information and he's a beast!
Agreed, Steve Smith is simply stellar here
Greatest voice ever recorded.
OMG, Perry's voice during the solo is out of this world!
When the live performance tops the record that's real talent. No autotune no gimmicks real musicians
The Real Journey!!!!!!
Steve Perry is having as much as the fans 💖, jamming, dancing, rocking, singing, this song is like fine wine, gets better & better everytime you listen to it... love this song! So HAPPY I got the 70's and the BEST music on earth, no b.s. real singers, real bands, they were all bad A$$ED! This song is phenomenal! This is exactly how the song should be, hard & fast, not toned down! Steve Perry is wildly good here, twirling and dancing, he loves this song as much as we do! :D* Band really fires up part way through, so much better in real life. Honorable mention to the tight jeans !
These people of Houston don't know how lucky (or blessed ) to witness this Concert .
How do you know that?
Yes!
@@Nova-fh2et ESP j-a
Saw them 3 times in Houston with Steve Perry, and believe me, I know how blessed I have been! 😍
I bet they're still smiling watching this now
42 years later and one of the most amazing concerts ever recorded,,, I was only 8 years old but appreciate and love it now at 49
Steve Perry has one of the very best voices in rock! Love him!❤️
This has to be the best version out there of this song, they're really firing on all cylinders here.
Truly...an iconic voice...and an iconic band!
Absolutely love Steve Perry, what an absolute phenonomen.
I LOVE "STEVE PERRY" he is one great singer. 🥰😍
Never will there be a substitute for him.🤩😘
Rita. Steve is really the best singer of the hard rock rock scene of the late 70's and 80's. He and journey are very underrated. Steve has not only wonderful color of voice, his technical stuffs and intonation are great, of course his personality and stage presence are top. This concert in Houston is doubtless one of the best concerts of the 80s, on the level of Queen's Budapest Concert.
Journey is a great Band!!!
Steve's very high note that starts at 217 till 225 spot is part of the instrumental sound he gives. And of course the kick spins during, wow ❤
Yes, STeve Perry has the beat & the rhythm down pat, he was a drummer in high school, that aids in his rock & roll dancing! Honorable mention to the beautiful tight blue jeans and t shirts the band is wearing, especially at 2:05 , I like the fact the band does not need fancy clothes, they are too gifted musically to need that, no elaborate dancers, and show boat clothing here, just perfect rock & roll in it's finest!!! I love this band, so great (when Steve Perry rocked this band ) 70's till near end of 1980s he did a great job, so did the band, the best!
Best singer ever! Simply "the voice"!!
Robert Plant
Still in love with that voice. Never will be replicated!
Steve Perry is one of the only singers who could sing it live and it sounded just as good if not better than the recorded version and yet, not identical. Amazing! Don't care if his voice is older, I still love everything that he puts into each and every song he sings. He's never just going through the motions vocally or performance-wise. Love him!
I'll say it all over again. There are different genre but this man can do things with his voice that no one else can NO ONE, NOBODY, OK?? Bon Jovi calls this man "the voice,."
I'll say this as politely as I can...
No Steve, no Journey!!!!
So it wasn't Journey for their first three albums?
John Kemp, you're absolutely right and there's a very good reason aside from him just being fantastically talented. Steve Perry is known as a tenor altino which is a rare form of countertenor. He hits the absolute highest notes in the male register.
@@Nova-fh2et they didn't make a dent in the early days without SP
@@navynightranger6517 good one
Nova.. unknown journey
Steve's voice here is immaculate, its chilling listening how he changes pitches with auto tune levels of accuracy absolutely amazing
Steve is one of the best sing at that time and now, GOD Bless You 🙏😇
For me he still is the best, his voice is amazing! Love Steve!!
A band at the peak of their performance… EPIC…
Wow just wow 😮....who's here in 2024🎉
Meeee!
Steve Perry is the G.O.AT, the best voice that has ever graced the universe!
Love this live version over the studio version
Got my tickets to the world tour in my pocket!! 🎉🎉❤
Steve's voice has many textures which made him so exciting to listen to
Hands down, the best Journey band ever, these members. Every member playing and singing in their prime. Amazing!
Fast tempo here! Steve's voice is always spot on. It's pretty unreal. Effortlessly hits all the notes. This particular show was amazing.
Arguably the best male voice ever in rock. Some will say Freddy, but I’ve heard Freddie’s voice crack numerous times in live gigs. Never heard Steve’s voice crack.
Robert Plant, Chris Cornell.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Hemispheres2112both great but Steve is the best.
So have I. About Freddie, I mean.
ONLY "vocalist" of that time that compares is Jimi Jamison from "Survivor". Surprised nobody thought of him.
I was one of many that was at this concert at the Summit to see Journey this night. It was electrifying to all the senses to see the girls go crazy and here the tunes that caused a deep feeling and being a guy to see this was unforgettable. Thank you Journey for the ride. I have been to numerous concerts of yours but this was the best.
They always play this faster or slower but every time I hear it, it is fabulous. I think it is my favorite journey song.
When Steve sings with Neal's solo is the bestpart for me.❤
Steve is effortlessly singing live better than most singers could do in the studio. This is why I believe Steve is 1 of ,if not the best rock vocalists of my time. Rob Halford or a young Sebastian Bach was close but Steve's inflections (?) are just buttery smooth. truly an Amazing vocalist.
He is unmatched in vocal prowess. So effortless.
He is much better than Freddie.There..I have said it.
@@piglet2548 I forgot about him. They weren't really my cup of tea so I don't think of him much.
Very different styles and I like Steve much better so I will agree with you there.
Right. Steve's technical skills are unmatched. Continuous phrase signing, diaphragmatic support, open vowels, range, emotive, and so much more!! No one has ever come close to Perry's over all talent level level as a vocalist. As any respectable singing coach worth their salt and they will agree.
One of the few that sounded so good live is Klaus Meine of the Scorpions.
All of them are so great! They are all talented in their own instruments and vocals.(especially Steve Perry as their lead vocalist) And of course... the ENERGY! They are unstoppable! The best concert I've ever watched even only on UA-cam. Whoever had the opportunity to watched this live performance must be the luckiest and very satisfied fans. A spectacular concert I've ever seen online! For me, Journey was the best rock n' roll band not only in their era, but the best ever!
At 2:16 Steve Perry does a major high note that sounds like a guitar
Holy shit, literally have watched this video probably a thousand times now. And I have never picked up on that. Always thought it was an accompanying guitar.
Yeah I always thought that too until about a few years ago. I was absolutely blown away. Whew!
SICK absolutely SICK!!!
Its not his voice. Watch the video carefully.
@@jude999 Sorry but... It is so his voice. How long ya been a Perry fan brother?? Listen to 'Wheel' and 'Anyway' from the Captured cd. He does it there too. A most awesome vocalist. Drummer and rest of band are pretty good as well. Peace and love 2 U
Five Words - -- - -The Best Band Ever - Journey
And they did this LIVE, night after night...no tracks, no #$%$ autotune .
Amazing voice, out of this world. The quality of his vocals is unbelievable. We don’t have such singers anymore , oh my god....it’s tragic!!!!
For me, the classic line-up of Journey; Smith & Valory tight rhythm section, with Cain on the keys/rhythm guitar and Schon & Perry fighting for the spotlight. Doesn't get much better than this.
That 2.29-3.18 break is pure rock heaven
Matteo Napolitano no kidding
That part isn't included in the original studio version. Just great 👍
I love the spin move Steve does!!!
Notni
Absolutely awesome solo. He's playing it on the bridge humbucker, would like to know which one it is
Journey probably the best arena rockin roll band ever. Just pure raw rock n roll. This 56 year old kid still listening to this here in 2022. Jimbo Mexican American, former US Navy radioman petty officer 86-96.
That little break at 2:34 into it is phenomenal , I was expecting it to go where it normally went and then it just took it to a different level, love when music does that, like a higher energy level, after listening to this and 'Stoney in Love' I remember just how phenomenal a powerhouse Journey was live, it's like a ride, a Journey, yeah
I recall the first time I heard this tune in the 80's. One of a kind, absolute fabulous performance "Journey!"
The BEST concert I've watched in my entire life. I can never have a chance to see a concert like this now sadly.
This does NOT get any better than THIS!!!!! Class Journey Forever!!!!
The man is unreal. The whole concert is! One of the few I regret not being able to attend. His vocals are Sam Cook inspired and rise to a whole other level.
1:03 Ross Valory asking "monitor volume down a little bit" LOL priceless
These guys were all zoned into their craft. They were a legit band.
I was at the Cape Cod Coliseum to witness this show in 1981. Never forget it.
BEST BAND EVER!!!!😊
Those people that had a chance to see a concert like this are the luckiest. So sad I won't be experiencing a concert like this.
2:14 is this a secondary guitar on the background? ... NO, IT'S STEVE PERRY HITTING AN OUTRAGEOUS HIGH NOTE!!!
Awesome! So Awesome!
All i can say is SLOOOOOOW IT DOWN ,,, LOL MAN i miss the 70s
omg ?
What an amazing rendition of the song.
Man i want to give Steve Smith some credits, they way he play, his constant beat, the power and sweetness that he has is just so good, probably he´s one of the most underrated drummers of all times.
ABSOLUTELY !!!
STUNNING! ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!! Came close to crying, yet again.
My Old School, Retro, Best. Out.
Most incredible band always and forever. Still my favorite after xxx years 😂. And Steve Perry…there’s NO one like him. The GOAT of singers. ❤❤❤❤. And thank you for making a song for me (oh Sherry). ❤
Anyone else catch Perry's slick disco move at 2:50? Priceless!
Yes! AKA the Steve Perry spin. Love it!!!
Yeah Steve Perry's got some happy dancing feet, jamming & a rock N rolling!
Some of the best quality videos of all the bands from the early 80's the sound is amazing.
man i love journey! top to bottom 1 of the tightest live bands you will ever hear. Props Steve Smith a monster at his profession.
Backing this killer group!
Only heard this song for the first time today. I listened to the studio version first thinking that it would be better, but then decided to listen to this and fk me...just WOW.
I don't know if Journey have come to Australia during my 48 years thus far, but sh#t I wish I had've seen them.
This & Perry's voice...absolutely epic. I will not Stop Believin' 🤩💖
I was at one of these concerts, when he wore That shirt!! Saw them 3 times in the 80's!!
BEST CONCERTS EVER!!!
Actually got a drumstick from Steve Smith at one of the shows 😊
Journey was at their peak at this time. So tight. Live perfection. Nothing will top the music of the 80s.
His vocals are unreal O.O
This song live was lot better than recorded
Greatest singer of all time--American classic...The greatest American singer ever..So reminds me of growing up in San Jose/San Francisco !
Ross Valory and Steve Smith have to be one of the tightest rhythm sections. Phenomenal groove!
This definitely my favorite version of this song...I was too young to see them live. That would have been something to see and hear!
What a set of pipes on Steve! Good Lord leaves me speechless with a smile! 😋💋💘👋
I'm old enough to have seen them live. The 1st time on this tour in '81 and again on the Frontiers tour in '83. They both were amazing!!
@@vernhoke7730 wow! I'm sure that's a treasured memory for you. They were in their prime then.
Wasn't born til 86... Wish I was older. Would of DIED to see them then. Steve Perry voice will always be number 1
Steve Perry is one of my favorite singers in rock music. His voice is absolutely gorgeous!
BEST OF THE BEST.
Steve not content with delivering a classic rock song with a world class vocal, but intent on working that crowd as much as he can. Great stuff.
Steve Perry should have his face on Mount Rushmore for his amazing voice and performance.
Steve Perry one of the best rock singer of all Time
Oh yeah that wheel in the sky with these boys!!! Would love a turn❤
I'm there 😍
Clearest, baddest and most fine voice in rock ❣️
Journey is one of those bands who got alot of flack for being too commercial, but man they could flat out play and Steve Perry is arguably the best pure voice rock n roll has ever seen.It must have been jealousy.
Oh heck yea Steve Perry IS JOURNEY he is the voice 😘💞💟❣
Nothing wrong with wanting to make money
^ flak.
Fact is Perry was a hit machine. Steve in the band- hits. Steve leaves, more hits, just not with Journey.
Journey have't written a song in 30 years.
Michael Ventura apparently since he’s really good my friend wishes she could sing that good
Out of this World
i grew up listening to this music and ill never change . i llisten to it every day at home at work or just out running around if the neighbors thinks its to loud they can move . we lost some great musicians over the years but we can still listen to thier music and go back in time to a special place thats when the world was a lot more fun with family and friends. every body has forgoten what life is about. its about taking care of each othe and growing old. if you got to see another sun rise look up and thank god. because a lot of people didnt get to see it . ron 1963.
I honestly feel sorry for all of the young folks who couldn't be with us in the 80's.
2:16 Just can't get enough of that angel voice, daaamn
The greatest singer ever.
Steve Perry- best vocalist ever put on earth💕
Chills 🥶 nothin but chills. 🧊
Best ever of Wheel in the Sky. Up tempo and Steve's voice is perfect.
He sings from heaven ! Incredible!!!!!
One of the best performances I've seen.
Proud to be Gen X, and witnessed this, live!
this is so good
Neil is a guitar god!
He absolutely IS.
Totally agree
Yup!
he is really great. but he is not a guitar god. he did not even make a spot on the list of 100 greatest guitarists of all time.
www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/100-greatest-guitarists-153675/
@@VIRGUSLATRO312 REALLY? Who gives a flying fig what Rolling Stone has to say?? Rolling Stone also said Bob Dylan is in the top ten of all-time great singers. Great writer? Yes. Great singer? Probably in the top 10 worst singers of all time.
Imagine being in this concert. The vibes the song gives, really amazing. Lucky those who had the chance to appear in Journey's concert.
When your there in the crowd and it’s just magic I’ll never forget this concert…I love this Journey. Steve always gave the best performance he poured everything in his shows. Saw them more than once and he always was fantastic
If you’re a vocalist you know you have only so many times you can push bless Steve for putting up with sped up versions of the song to fit the set list
