UPDATE! Some of the information in this video is outdated. As of today in the experimental versions, weapon techniques can no longer stun zombies. This means that stunlocking with a cudgel is no longer going to keep you safe. If you're barely getting started, it may be safer to use 0.G stable to learn. Otherwise watch this space as I try to figure out a new early game strategy.
Thank you for coming back to this video to add this information! I always thought it was weird to be able to stun zombies. I guess now the only way to safely engage a zombie is to take it out as quickly as possible.
I just got started today. Its been confusing since many of the guides are out of date and while they help me understand controls many of the strategies are no longer valid. What I have found to be working for me is slinging pebbles.
I've watched hundreds of hours of CDDA content on youtube, but being able to watch these two vids and use them as reference makes me feel like I could actually boot up the game and survive for more than an in game day. Thanks for making 'em.
Glad to see you back with another video! My condolences for your losses, and I hope you can find some happiness, or at least distraction, from making the video and helping us newbs out. ♥️
Thanks for including those infographics between the different weapon types. I've played and contributed to CDDA for about a year now, and this is my first time hearing about it - for the longest time, I just chose weapon types randomly.
My tip for early game combat is simple. Just set things on fire with molotovs. Collect glass bottles from wherever you can, and siphon gasoline from various cars that are too broken to fix. Lure the zombies into the flames to kill entire hordes at once!
Just use spears early game. Weak early game zombies, without armor can be killed easy with just a pointy stick and no skills anyway. You take no damage and get some combat skills. If you kite them obviously. But make sure you have at least 12 strenght or its just gonna take longer. I usually always use 14 strenght. There is just no reason not to.
@@reinhard1651 Yes it is very dangerous, with low skill but you can level your throwing skill to level 3 right at the start without much problems once you hit throwing level 1 by just throwing some rocks. But just using a decent spear early game is the best you can do to prevent damage and deal as much a possible yourself. Spears are pretty realistic in this game. They are extremly cheap dont need any skill and do decent damage and have reach and most early zombies are weak and slow. The only problem might be soldier zombies and ferals early on. Also you dont need to fight every zombie you see. Especialy in night time, where you never know where they are right now. You are faster than most of them so use that to your advantage and just outrun them and pick what you need and leave. But if you try to fight thoughee enemys then use the quaterstaff. Almost double the damage of a crugel 18 and higher hit bonus +3.
Super happy to see someone new playing this game on youtube and making a new player guide especially! I’m a long time player and got into the game 4 years or so ago.
Thanks for the guide here. This game is what I am using to keep myself busy when not working staying busy. I am sorry for your loss. I know the feeling. My partner of 16 years passed away last year. I think these video games are the only thing keeping me held together here. As time is the only thing that is going to make any of this feel better. Games like these are great time sinks. Thank you.
The way you're presenting as an adventure is way more interesting and easy to understand than many tutorials i've tried watching. I've been trying to get into CDDA so thank you for the video !
Really good video, might actually have to pick up DDA at this point. Please accept my condolences for your losses, I hope life is a much happier place for you moving forward.
I last played cdda about 5 years ago and all my muscle memory for keybindings and navigation is gone. I don't know if it's skill rust or game changes, but I'm finding early stages quite difficult. This is going to be really useful for reminding me of the things that used to be so natural.
There was a recent change to grabs in the experimental version that makes even small groups of zombies way more dangerous in melee. Also theres new code that makes you suck at a ton of stuff if your limbs or head are damaged or encumbered, so be aware of that.
I dunno if someone already mentioned it, but you can note on your map the general area you left your bag and it's a quick and easy way to never lose your gear in a strange spot. I sometimes role-play it and stash my gear "incase someone comes and snatches it" so I'll leave a note saying "behind boulder", "in trashcan near enterance" or "in tall grass" But otherwise, if you're playing normally the road trick works quite well.
I recently started my foray into CDDA. Your videos so far have done alot to help understand this complex game. The way you explain things is really easy to understand. Much appreciated!
Aight. It's finally time. After being subbed since the first vid and following your lets play series I'm finally doing the damn thing. I'm playing the game. Your tutorial series has been a lot of help. Tysm
I actually started playing around the time your first video came out. I'm glad to see you're back, I hope to see you do well. Annnd maybe perhaps I'll stop dying my first week into the game.
This is a valid point, but IMO the problem there is that you may spend several turns being bitten while you try to break free, and then you're still stuck dealing with the zombie, who has done a lot of damage to you without taking any itself. There are times and places to try to break free and move away, but in the situation I presented with the equipment and skills our character had, experience has taught me that the best strategy is usually to just beat the zombie down. It's super easy to find alcohol wipes now, so deep bites aren't very bad unless you aren't able to loot houses.
Hey! Already saw a lot of tutorials for dda, but yours is actually the best one. Yo explain a lot and I actually understood something about the game. Thanks! Make more videos like this one
A very well informed guide to the basics of combat especially with the more detailed mechanics for speed de-buffs,weapons and their respected targets well done!
extremely helpful stuff even for players who aren't new to the game. the simplified explanation of the armor types was really edifying for me in particular, considering that I've always been confused by bash vs cut damage.

This video is soo good. Other ppl have said it, but I also have watched countless other videos, great videos, but this video and your other videos are really good. Thank you.
Useful stuff. A lot of it is the same as it was back in the early days, but a lot of it is very different. Many of the details of these differences have gone over my head. Woulda taken forever to figure them out. Sure the next video will be even more handy there.
I can't even count how many characters I lose, and I'm definitely not new to CDDA lol. Been playing for at least 4 or 5 years. Just recently got the newest experimental build, was running a very outdated build that had this mod that added a scavenger faction for the year after start, was a shocking change in pace, but I wish I could find the mod that added the scavenger faction, was fun starting a year later as this dude in a run down shack with a guy downstairs who headed the faction selling stuff.
day one combat isn't difficult, it's just high risk and requires a few skills to help it out. Defensive options such as improved dexterity, reduced encumbrace, pain tolerance, and weapons with the dodge/parry are HUGE in CDDA, because of the 'pain death spiral' effect. Getting hit makes you worse at combat, so not getting hit keeps you at higher effectiveness for longer amounts of time. Getting hit is a leading cause of failed day 1 runs. Get unencumbered, get a proper weapon, and bait as few basic zombies at a time as possible, and having an escape route (and using it) are key. Sometimes you draw a bad card, but once you get some traction, you can start to clear the streets and open up buildings for relatively safe scavenging. Keeping rich in bandages and antiseptic is very helpful as well. Survival 1 for access to cattail jelly is incredibly helpful.
Thanks! It's a Fnatic REACT gaming headset. It's not as good as a standing mic, but it does double duty for when I want to hop on Elden Ring with the boys or something, plus it's only around $50.
I like the video - learned some new things about battle tactics in this game. I must admit, though - when listening to your voiceover I can hear some kind of ambient background noise that’s distracting. Would it be possible to use noise reduction in future videos? Thanks
Because of the slowing effects from pain and the fact that a turn is one second but actions are actually subdivided into 1/100ths of a second, you will often find that moving away from the enemy does not buy you any extra time and may in fact result in lost time as the enemy can sometimes keep pace with or unexpectedly outspeed the player. Additionally, every turn spent in combat is another turn that an extra enemy could wander over. Sometimes moving is the right choice, sometimes it is not. There's one other issue that we haven't discussed yet (that's in the next video), and that's that unlike many other roguelikes, melee attacks can proc rapid strike or stun or knock the enemy down, which causes the player to gain turns or the enemy to lose them. This is more time-efficient than kiting, giving you more free hits. TLDR: Sometimes this is true, sometimes it's not, and it's very hard in the early game to decide which is which. My advice is to press the attack and go for a quick kill, with the caveat that it won't always be the right decision.
Sometimes. It never really seems worth it to me though, and if you're going to be kiting you may as well use a spear - something I'll cover in the next video for sure. I should stress that the game supports so many different playstyles that you shouldn't be afraid to keep doing something if it's working for you.
If you have a quick(less than 100 mov/turn) or reach weapon and you are quicker than the enemy then it is worth it as you will take less damage overall.
So running around like a lost chicken and dying from dehydration is not the aim of the game? I feel foolish having watched the thoughtful approach taken here to maximise safety and progress ahead! Thanks!

Well the easy way would be finding warm clothes in houses. You can also craft youself some leg warmer and Arm warmer at tailoring level 1 and a balaclava at level 2 and survival 1.
If you are on 0.F stable, there's a mechanic which has now been removed where injured body parts were getting colder than healthy ones. You need to get inside, underground if possible, and try to make or find a balaclava or two.

Are you playing on the experimental release, or 0.F stable? Experimental releases contain newer content and can be found here: cataclysmdda.org/experimental/
@@luggyschmuggy Stable is generally very out of date, even shortly after a new stable release (this is because for a while before each release major new content isn't supposed to be added, so it floods in shortly afterwards). It's more stable, but the cutting edge of experimental rarely has problems anyway, and when there are major bugs that slip through testing they're usually fixed within hours.
I noticed you didn't pick up any of the adhesive bandages or the detergent, or were in general selective in what you grabbed. I was wondering if you were only taking stuff that you actually need currently, but I'm guessing you just sped things up for tutorial purposes. I thought it would be good to just grab everything not nailed down when you manage to get access to a house, but then again, if you don't need something, why weigh yourself down. If you need it later, you know where to find it.
Yeah I was just rushing through for tutorial purposes, those would be good grabs normally. There is a balance you have to strike between looting everything you possibly can to save time later, and taking it easy and only looting stuff as you need it so that you always have more to do.
Your biggest mistake in this video was not checking the rack on that firemen vehicle at 10:36, it tends to be full of gear like fireaxes, hooks, crowbars and other head-crushing tools. Fireaxe is probbly the best find in early-mid game and a solid choice for the late zeds evolution cycle.
Best DPS of ~6 (it's an unarmored enemy with no dodge) times 14 seconds = ~84 damage. Base zeds have 80 hp, so 14 sec ttk. Since this video was recorded, grabs have become more debilitating, so that would probably push the time up a bit.
cataclysmdda.org/experimental/ is where you can find the experimental builds. Information about the specific build used in the video is in the description, but today's build should work fine too.
The Thing I Hate IS That More Fast The Zombies ARE More Deadly ARE Them 1 Time I Died By 1 Zombie Child That Was Faster Than Me And I Had An Wooden Spear

The key binds are really what holds you back early on, but once you gain the muscle memory, it gets a lot easier.
Keybinds are no joke, but I feel that the overall "how do you even play this???" concern still holds.
I'm equally excited to maybe not lose a fight!
The quest offered by the NPC is currently drawing from a list of far more quests than it should. That's a bug that will hopefully be fixed before 0.G
Yea, I got a refugee center quest from my starting NPC and I was very confused, lol.

Fireaxe is probbly the best find in early-mid game and a solid choice for the late zeds evolution cycle.
...what is that space marine model what curse did you unleash on this video.....good video
Hello worm girl! What tileset do you use?
Lets goooooo
At 6:00 how did you get 14 seconds TTK?
Best DPS of ~6 (it's an unarmored enemy with no dodge) times 14 seconds = ~84 damage. Base zeds have 80 hp, so 14 sec ttk. Since this video was recorded, grabs have become more debilitating, so that would probably push the time up a bit.
What version are you using maam? My version doesn't have that stamina usage.
cataclysmdda.org/experimental/ is where you can find the experimental builds. Information about the specific build used in the video is in the description, but today's build should work fine too.
@@mutantwormgirl thank you good madam
Time to update the game. I hope all my mods will work fine!
