Ran into a minefield, stopped, realized I was in a minefield, then gave an exasperated sigh as a zombie child stumbled into the minefield. The explosion and chain reaction vaporized both of us.
I was in the game trying to read books and their was a minefield that zombies keep going into and it took like 1 minute to read the book in real life because of the zombies exploding

I started a game as a martial arts master, just to mess around. Picked the Black Belt profession, added knowledge of a few types of martial arts, and then dumped every remaining point into my unarmed skill.
Now starting as Black Belt leaves you with no items other than a kimono and some sandals, but I just wanted to walk out of the grocery store I spawned in, start fighting some zombies, and see how long the build lasts.
And what happened? How many zombies was I able to take down before finally falling myself?
Literally all of them. There's a handful of zombies outside the grocery store, and I start fighting them. My karate chops and kicks are so powerful that they literally knock the zombies apart, snapping bones and tearing flesh. I'm so quick the zombies can't get a hit on me, and whenever a group starts to form around me I simply back up so that only one is close to me at any given time.
As the battle goes on, the sound attracts more and more zombies from the surrounding city blocks - at first 10 zombies lay dead on the ground, then 20, then 30, and soon the entire area is littered with the numerous zombie corpses I have decimated.
Eventually, they stop coming - I had killed every single zombie in the city that was within earshot of me. Awed by this newfound power, I realized I was invincible - that entire run suddenly became extremely easy; need some food? Just stop by a gasoline station and get some from the vending machines. Sure, there are 10 zombies there and fighting them will bring another 40, but that's fine when _you can kill all of them in hand-to-hand combat_.
Eventually though, I killed an acid zombie and then accidentally stood in the acid puddle it left for too long. With both my legs disabled, it quickly became impossible to outrun and fight the zombies, let alone escape the immediate situation.
TL;DR Kung-Fu build is OP
@Tony M. Well I used multi-pool skill distribution if I remember correctly, which was part of why I found it crazy he was so OP. There were difficulties in the build, since I had no other skills and started with no useful items, but yeah I don't usually do builds like that.

I tried to use a mininuke to kill a large horde of zombies. I activated the mininuke's timer for 2 minutes and ran away, I kept running away until I was 2 blocks away from the spot I activated the timer. But, I was still hearing the timer so I thought I was still too near, so I kept running a bit more before I stopped and decided, yeah this is far enough, I looked in my inventory and in there I saw in yellow text: mininuke(1).

Ahh yes, the ole pop it but forgot to drop it.
First character I had was a cyborg assassin with razor fingernails (edge is quite ssharp) in an evac shelter. Unfortunately he had asthma, I accidentally pressed the run toggle and less than 3 hours in he died from an asthma attack breaking into an electronic shop to pillage batteries from the numerous vibrators lining the shelves.
asthmatic is honestly one of the harder disabilities - constantly trying to have an inhaler on you gets difficult (and poking around hospitals where they're plentiful is quite dangerous)

@@SsethTzeentach You can substitute the inhaler for a lot of things. Generally it tells you in the description of the item, but this *is* CDDA so you gotta think about more than just those items.
I did a play-through with Schizophrenia once. Every time I moved, the game said in all caps in the description bar TURN OFF THE GAME NOW. Easily one of the most terrifying things to happen to me in a videogame.

The way I always described Cataclysm... is "Imagine if every doomsday scenario happened at once". Astroid? happened. Nuclear war? Happened. Alien invasion? Happened... and so on.

Disarmed several mines before having one blow up underneath me. I actually survived that with little to no injuries. What killed me was when i threw a rock at another mine from ~15 ft away and a piece of shrapnel hit me between the eyes, instantly killing me.

And if you get deeper into the game please remember the ( / ? ) key on your keyboard. It allows advanced inventory management and it's amazing.
You'll need it for managing large stockpiles and moving things too heavy to fit in your pack (like engines, wheels, car parts etc).

Got my first NPC ally. Opened a door to a zombie. Ally fired his flamethrower.
Yea, npc targeting is kinda wack. I've had an npc with full alpha mutation, and nearly maxed combat skills, armed him with halberd and full kevlar. He was an absolute monster, took down hordes by himself. Well, one time I got grabbed by a zombie on the street while we were walking around. I was pinned between my guy and the zombie so the npc fucking ran me through with his halberd several times to hit the zombie, while I desperately struggled to pull free. He smashed through my riot armor and custom made, reinforced light survivor gear. I barely survived the critical bleeding on 3 of my limbs. Took me like a week to recover from that.
My best character was a speed focused roller derpy player with a heavily modified nail-gun-rifle. I would burn down entire houses to collect thousands of nails from them to use as ammo and score quintuple headshots to compensate for the lackluster damage to mow down hordes of undead on roller skates. Unless I was against robots or something else heavily armored, then I would just snort cocaine to get to point blank range with an armor piercing loaded 9mm pistol.
Turns out what mutations you get is weighted towards your existing personality traits and speed gave me more speed, sending me down the avian mutation path with lighter bones and such. I died 1-2 years into the game with 20+ cybernetic enhancements (which I very painstakingly looted from a science lab that went past -100 degrees celsius at the lowest levels during winter) when I planted C4 at a military base to bypass the need for a keycard to get into the armory and thought "Hey, if I move that ticking C4 I could open TWO cells, surely I have enough speed to get there and throw it again..." and it detonated in my hands as I picked it up. Normally with the level of armor and enhancement I had you would barely survive that, but my hollow bird bones nearly doubled the amount of bashing damage I took from any source, so I was completely annihilated by it.

Best character ever:
I was wandering from town to town in search of bionics and especially mutagens in labs. That's when i was struck with brilliant idea. Why not make my own bioresearch facility. I found a remote area. Dug a 2 z level hole and with jackhammer and ton of wood created "cozy" place. Then i started searching for other survivors. I invited them to my base only to lock them in small cells without their clothes. Then i started mass producing various mutagens to inject them into my "party members". I learned a lot about mutations but it wasn't enough for me. The next step was to capture living triffids and mycus species and bring them underground and reproduce them. I even managed to create a huge museum filled with zombies of almost every type.
CDDA is truly magnificent game 12/10.

I tried out the same thing, the roof traversing thing is sketchy, you can only do that if you use a shitton of wood to create really long "vehicles" that are just frames and floor Took me several in game days to make that while maintaining my character's needs at the same time. You also can't move across the streets because of the absurd distance. But the backalleys, pits, and traps are all legit and extremely fun.
I awoke in a shelter with one other survivor.
She had an infection and needed antibiotics, so i set out to find them.
After searching everything everywhere, i determined that antibiotics don't exist, and apparently booze isn't good enough for her.
so took all my clothes off in front of the other survivor, ate 60 aspirin and chugged a whole bottle of vodka in an attempt to kill myself, but the vodka just made me puke up all the aspirin.
So after raiding more stores while puking my guts out, i sat outside and tried to sleep it all off in the freezing rain, but apparently that makes it difficult to sleep. That or the violent heaving due to alcohol poisoning.
A coyote then attempted to eat my face, but i was covered in so many layers of clothing that it couldn't bite through to my fleshy interior, so i very slowly cornered it in a bathroom and smashed it's head in with a police baton, still vomiting violently all the while.
Due to all the vomiting, i was starving and thirsting to death, so having already eaten all the raw meat chunks in the butcher's shop earlier and having vomited up the raw chunks of coyote i'd just made, i waited until i stopped being nauseous and used the credit cards i found on some mutilated police officers to buy all the pixie stix and necco wafers in a nearby vending machine and attempted suicide again, this time by sugar overdose.
Unfortunately cookies and candy do fuck all to sate your hunger and only gave me mild diabetus, so i broke into a nearby house, it's previous owner apparently being jewish since i found ceremonial jewish clothing in there.
But more importantly, i found a plastic bag full of 30 packs of bologna, which sated my hunger.
The vending machine next to the previous one was full of sparkling water and 7up, so at least i wasn't thirsty.
So, with my only reason to continue existing (the quest to find antibiotics) a bust and yet also unable to die due to raiding and wearing the contents of an entire clothing shop and thus becoming an impenetrable ball of leather, wool and cotton, i closed the game, and thought over the hours i'd spent playing before rewatching this video.
The only problem i have with this game is that, upon finding some weed, i was told that i *had* to smoke it, and couldn't just eat it.
you might have found antibiotics nut not known there are like 5 types in the game 1 of which is called antibiotics and is the second best antibiotic all the others are the names of actual antibiotics

That's CDDA for you. I assure you you will find antibiotics and antiseptic everywhere after you find it once.
You can also make a "space cake", which makes weed edible and gives a special message like "the cake tastes funny.." when eating it.
for antibiotics, check doctor's offices, hospitals, and even bathrooms in people's homes. you'll eventually have way more than you could ever reasonably use
It was my first run, and I slapped together a perfect recreation of Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I started in the mall and grabbed as much food as I could before I had attracted too many zombies, then made a quick escape and bashed in some giant acid ant skulls. Made it to a collection of houses.
My lucky break.
Now, you see, these werent your normal houses, no. These were full on mansions. The kind that would leave a take one bowl full of full-size Oh Henrys on halloween. I ran past some of the zombies outside and had just realized my mistake. There were several more inside. I noticed that there was a suit of full plate armour and a mace at the far end of the room. I managed to put it on and get properly equipped before I took too many hits.
My battle was legendary.
I took out all the zombies inside and then made my way out. My full plate armour let me take enough damage to fight off the hoard as I ran for my life. The armour slowed me down a lot.
What I had initially thought was my savior was now the metal coffin that my mall cop body would die in. I was quickly overwhelmed and was killed.

My most successful run hasn't died yet, but the very first time I took my spike-covered hippie van turned death mobile out for a ride, I crashed into a boulder and my companion riding in the passenger seat flew out the window. After he gets mauled to death by a zombie hulk and I run over said zombie, I realize that the passenger seat didn't have a seatbelt, so if I just remembered to put in a basic safety feature, he wouldn't have died.
TL;DR Seatbelts are important, which I thankfully learned from my NPC buddy dying and not me.

My last run was pretty successful. My boy, a wandering lumberjack squatting in a ranch, built a working power grid from solar panels and cannibalized electric cars and forged medieval weaponry. I had already cleared out a town, and decided to test my new weapons out on a larger city. I killed my way to the local bank, where I then made my first dent in my $25,000 dollar debt on the only ATM for miles around I guess. Overconfident, I investigated a noise in the bathroom that I thought was just a trapped zombie. Nope. The moment I opened the door I got gunned down by a security robot's 9mm submachine gun.

@@gamesandglory1648 It was a starting trait. I took it because it seemed pretty interesting and hinted at the debt having consequences. I don't think there were any actual coded consequences but being extra judicially executed in a bathroom was a big one.

@@gamesandglory1648 I don't bother grabbing all possible cash cards. Was cash really that common? I don't remember if being TOO common back during my run. I think it was after they nerfed swimmer zombie cash cards

One of my first ever characters was a practitioner of what I like to call car-fu. He was a black belt martial artist, and I beat up a few zombies, but everything changed when I discovered driving. I was in a major city with a lot of dilapidated cars parked in close proximity, so the odds of finding a working one were actually fairly high. I had no points in driving, so the vehicle I commandeered was skidding all over the road, but fear is for weaker men. I turned the speed up as high as it could go and started skidding around over zombies, mowing down hordes and narrowly avoiding buildings. When the car became too broken to keep driving, I would leap from the vehicle and punch my way through the horde to a new car. I racked up quite a body count this way, and continued doing it until I encountered a hulk that beat me to death and kicked my corpse down several city streets, leaving a trail of my blood and entrails.
This game is fantastic.
I'm like 2 days playing this game and I don't know shit about how to drive. I started up on the Very Bad Day Naked start because I liked all those points and built a character that was an ubermensch in stats and traits, but no skills.
When I woke up I was sick and bitten, wearing only a wet towel when my house is on fire. I notice a fuck ton of zombies milling around and say screw it, I'm running. As soon as I crawl out the window they notice me so I rush to punch out the neighbors window frame and crawl through it, zombies spilling in from every orifice in the house except one. Diving out the window I find a motorcycle and truck in the parking lot, so I hop on the motorcycle and proceed to... ride in fucking circles then make a figure eight while thinking oh god i have no idea what I'm doing. Next thing you know I'm surrounded by zombies who tear me off the bike and gangbang me.

@@jbreitz87 i started in the police station when i first started the game me not knowing anything that those where foot prints outside and the 2nd i step outside theres a horde of zombies im like oh hell naw to the naw naw naw and run back inside unknown to me there are also zombies in the police station the next thing i know is my character is fightting off zombies on both sides as the noise is attracting mroe zombies and as my police gear and riot shield start to fail all i could do was despertly beat the zombies to death with my baton. i onyl killed about 5 zombies before my character is gangbanged on both sides by zombies
My character just died in his sleep, because he was infected. It was the most peaceful death one of my characters ever had

I played a random person once, was trapped in the upstairs section of a restaurant had to smash a window and jumped down a ledge and about broke my legs, rounded a corner and 10 zombies chased me for a block untell I committed suicide

I came across a working school bus and, not knowing how to drive properly, drove straight into a building at high speeds, and broke my spine.
9/10 would be finished off by a squirrel again.
I locked myself in a large gunstore, practised a little with the huge pile of funs by shooting at the helpless horde outside, and then went and set up my tent in the back room. And then exploded, because I accidentally lit a stick of dynamite in my inventory when setting up the tent and didn't notice.
The most annoying thing is that when I first got into the shop, I went through my stuff dropping the things I didn't need. I looked at the dynamite, realized I really didn't have much use for it, but kept it anyway because 'you never know'. And I didn't.
"What's that, Stinky Pete accidentally lit a stick of dynamite thinking it was a candle and now is about to be blown to smithereens?"
Made a bionic monster with schizophrenia. I was so mentally damaged that I was deaf, so when I finally found another survivor they were so freaked out by ne s reaming in their face that they shot me...

I started a game last week with wandering spawns instead of static spawns, meaning the zombies actually wander around instead of staring at a wall inside the cities until they either see or hear you.
Incredible how more fun™ this makes the game.
First week of my characters life consisted of wandering around the nearby forest, sleeping on the floor as i was evicted in the morning of the first day from my evac shelter by a feral runner who decide to just stand right by the door as i was coming back from my first round of exploration.
After building an improvised shelter on a nice place hidden by trees on every side and advancing the the late stone age by myself, i found an half-built cabin which, which after weeks of work i managed to finish.
It is now mid autumn, i have killed over 40 zombies with just spear and bow and i plan to finally begin to raid to nearly cities.
This game is autism crack.
Can you give us an update?
Still alive, almost died to a Jabberwock (don't believe Sseth, that thing killing itself during his gameplay was a fluke), i now have a reflex recurse bow and a large quiver and i found an functional electric car in the nearest city which i already had cut an path through the forest to get it to my house when i was building it.
I am collecting chunks of steel to make an anvil after building both a kiln and a forge, my plan now is to make an steel axe so that i can enlarge my house without taking an eternity to build everything ( stone axe is garbage ).
My character survived for over an year now, its spring again.
I cannot recommend playing with Wandering Spawns enough, before all i did in this game was go to the edge of town and kite zombies one after the other ad-infinitum.
Now their behavior is unpredictable, i find them wandering around the streets several hundred meters from the nearby town, sometimes they just wander into my house which actually puts the traps you can build in the game for some use, sometimes i luck out and i can go to towns and just grab stuff without having to kill anything because for whatever reason all the zombies that would be there "guarding" those buildings in Static spawn mode got attracted somewhere else.
Aviz Vit nice man, I went into a school and got buttfucked by a brute taking a shit in one of the toilets. After he nearly annihilated me, a zombie hulk smashed through the wall and proceeded to skull fuck me through another one, killing me and the NPC I was with in the process. God this game is wild.
No friend, sadly my character finally perished after 2 and a half in game years, he was exploring an underground lab and after already being wounded by other dangers that lurked within, he was finally cut down by machine gun fire from a turret.
He went from being a hobo hiding in the forest from wolves and dogs like an escaped inmate hides from the law to someone that owned a whole room full of firearms and equipment of every sort.
He had a good run, his proudest achievement was killing a Shocker brute with a grenade to the face.

How I died in my first time playing CDDA. Decided to take the Out of Town scenerio. I start looting the cabin I wake up in, and just start smashing crates and shit. I look outside the window and see a man named Roelle armed with a crossbow, staring at me. I go out to talk to him and we talk for a bit. He's a pretty cool dude. I ask if he's got anything for me to do, and so he gives me a dog whistle and tells me to go find his dog. Apperently this dog is in a nearby house. Yeah alright I'll do it. So, I head to this house. I find a giant wasp, and I try to run away but from behind it sounds like a helicopter is chasing me. I then get stung by it, multiple times. Eventually I just turn around, and crush it's skull with a branch I found on the ground. I am in severe pain, but I am determined to find this dog. I head to the house, and there's about 5 zombies on the road. I'm like "Yeah okay I'll just try to be quiet" and I try to sneak past. They see me. I get eaten alive. A few moments later a zombie dog starts to eat my remains as well. All is good. Thanks Roelle.

I remember surviving for about three years in my giant armored mobile fortress, bristling with gun turrets, wearing well-crafted custom armor, and larping through the wasteland with a sniper rifle. All was good until at maximum range, a turret fired it's last burst of 9mm at me (while surrounded by about 10,000 angry zombies punching ti for making noise), striking me in the head (around m ballistic helmet) and ending my life like an ant underneath the shoe of a 7 foot tall body builder.

@@AuroraAce. the turrets are crazy. I wanted to test just how much so I used Debug mode to whip up a charecter with crazy stats, bomb-proof armour and all the bionics then ran him straight into a turret. First burst and my torso is almost shredded
The bullets travelled through the bionic forcefield, through the bomb armour, through the bullet proof vest, through the alloy skin plating, through the carbon nanotubes, and smacked my chunky ass HP

I still remember my first (somewhat) successful character.
I played as a deformed muslim karate novice, who gradually became a wasteland entity akin to Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, with melee and dodging skills so ungodly high he could face entire hordes of electric, acid and brawler zombies with his bare hands.
Sadly his save file now resides in some kind of limbo inside a formatted hard drive, I'm not there to see his journey anymore, but I bet he still roams the wasteland bringing with him the mighty judgement of Allah wherever he goes.
Addendum: If you feel like expanding your roguelike binge addiction you should check out DoomRL, Sil, ToME, ADOM and Caves of Qud.
The last 3 you mention are the ones I have on my now disfunctional PC. Can attest that those 3 are top tier roguelikes, I might add IVAN since it has a simplified "dwarf fortress-like" body system and due to the sheer absurdity of situations you can get yourself into. Like loosing your arms because you used poorly your wand of fireballs, so you attach de defeated monster limbs to yourself, and enchant them so they are made of iron to avoid getting that situation again.
Plus, the amount of banana jokes makes the game so apeeling.

Why? It's just a little fish with lot of exp for no reason. Except when you try to melee them *for some reason* every one of your limb tends to fly off.
On the flip side, they can sever your face so extra fun points if you manage to regrow said face so you can wear your previous face as a mask on your face.

Immediately notice how unbelievably fucked I was unless I solved my problem fast.
Decide to break down doors and fences by bashing them. Works 99% of the time.
Notice I'm tired as fuck, take a nap in a dark, cold basement area (taking a blanket from an area upstairs).
Realize, in order to get through a certain type of door, I'm going to need lockpicks.
Find the required tool, pick up a singular wire at a time from destroyed fences and transport it into a crafting area.
Make so many lockpicks I wasn't ever going to have to worry about running out.
Notice I'm starving. Raid a pantry-like area for food and drink.
That's dealt with.
Break into the two rooms containing zombie guards using lockpicks.
Dodge and weave, brutally kill them with the tool I picked up earlier.
Steal the armor and tonfas from the lockers containing equipment in the room.
Have absolutely no further problems escaping the prison after getting that equipment.
Escaped with my life, though hungry and thirsty as fuck, and managed to get to a city on foot, narrowly avoiding what seemed to be a military blockade.
Kill some zombies, scavenge for food, find and clear a relatively safe house.
Set up a comfortable-ish area in the basement.

I downloaded Seth's copy, and booted up his world. I made a innawoods /k/ommando who crashes his helicopter and breaks both his legs and arms either in the crash or shortly after, I proceeded to loot a functioning buggy car and floor it through the city as 4 different shock hulks and a swarm of zombie children in the hundreds chased after me. I made it to a nearby town from where I started, my car severely damaged and out of gas. I looted up a grocery with 2 women and a dude armed to the teeth with AK's that just started following me. With my wheelless cart and more food than I needed but wasn't willing to share, I made my way north to a double garage gas station, where fought off more zombie children, several boomers, and a coyote. Nearby was a running crashed semi, and a generator.
Since then and rewatching this video, I realize that was seth's truck from about 2:30. He may not realize it, but in his death he left me a tool that has claimed more undead children's unlives than any mortal could have predicted. Every time I have to pull chunks of a small child out of my radiator, or turn on the windshield wipers to clear the miniature gore from my vision I think of you, Seth, and imagine you once sitting where I do now, killing children and clearing their carrion all the same.
I will carry on your legacy. I will Remember You.

Once I wandered into a swamp on one of my first characters. Bradly, a local craftsman was apt at making cool stuff thanks to his fabrication skill and had a nail bat, reinforced clothing, and some sport pads. I didn't realize at the time swamps are hell holes filled with giant frogs, dragon flys, mosquitos and other terrible things. I was quickly discovered and had to beat the ichor out of each and every beast and insect that happened to catch my scent.
By the end of the fight there was a bloodied and naked Brad wearing nothing but a gas mask, motorcycle helmet, backpack, and combat boots in a torrential downpour. His freshly tailored clothing torn from his body by the ravenous swarm of swamp things; their twitching corpses littered about. The chitin armor I made after was well worth the effort.
Swamps also have sinkholes you can fall through and end up in an underground cave system with no way out.
@@DarkenIsGod if you have a long rope or grappling hook you can get out also you don't have to worry about those if you have 10 or more perception as than your character will see the tile where it would sink
I remember being robbed at gunpoint about a few weeks into one of my characters. When I dropped my bat I remember how he got closer and checked my pockets for any loot. I thought "Fuck it", and tried to disarm him. To my surprise, I succeeded in grabbing his double-barrel shotgun from his hands and shot his face off. Felt like a badass lmao.
And then a Jabberwock which heard the gunshot "snuck up" on me and mauled me to death.

My most successful character in this game? A lab escapee experiment who was essentially a catgirl mutant (long tail, feline ears, whiskers, padded feet.) who escaped a lab. She took over a farm, collected a bunch of animals, mostly cows, chicken and some dogs. Looted half a city using a ridiculously overpowered, heavily modified composite bow, and a pike she forged. Was about to start her own faction with one follower, hoping to get more by freeing captives from a mi-go scout tower.
But got cocky with her, and forgot caution. Opening the door to the tower, a group of Mio-go slavers screamed her fatigue into 0, she could not drag herself away as the mi-go slavers surrounded and beat her to death.
Shortest playtrough? Another lab escapee, started with a zombie hulk standing in the entrance of my characters cell, got punched trough a wall 3 steps into the game.
Most unfair start? Prison captive, staff and other inmates are zombies, no way out of the cell that is locked. I persume the character would have starved to death.
Stupidest death? Another lab escape scenario, evade and eventually beat zombie scientists and security. Get trough lethal security systems, learn computing from a book found to be able to hack the door to the lab library. Use lab library to learn chemistry so i can make explosives. Use dynamite to make my own exit, avoiding the autoguns the owners so generously left behind at the main exit. Run into wild fox running past me, seconds after stepping out of the building. Realize too late that the fox was running from a zombie horde chasing it. Die drowning in a sea of blob-animated corpses.
My first game I discovered that I could literally start out as Kenshiro so I did. I was able to dispatch any threat with a single punch and I was fast enough to dodge almost every hit. I thought that I was invincible until I realized that I was slowly freezing to death. I found a blanket that I was able to wear which made me feel even more like Kenshiro as I was now wrapped in cloth. I still realized that I would need food so I killed the nearest dog and ate his flesh while figuring that I’d be fine as long as my high resistance pulled me through.
It did not pull me through.
I found myself vomiting profusely and losing strength due to food poisoning. My punches became weak and I started to slow down, the next enemy I encountered was able to wound me severely and I was just barely able to crawl away while leaving a trail of blood. It wasn’t long before I succumbed to blood loss and died.

We had not long passed the corpse of Punished Schlomo and his gameboy when we entered a building, inside which we were attacked by a horde of zombie children. They devoured me and my companion.

First character - standard Survivor starting in a standard shelter. Zombie grenadier spotted out the north window. Pack of bulldogs spotted out the west. More zombie grenadiers spotted out the south. For anyone who's just now watching the video and feels like giving this a spin, be aware that the footage Sseth used is by no means representitive of the game at this point in time anymore. DDA underwent massive changes that push towards hyperealism (as much as you can on an ascii set) and this hurt gameplay massively, not to mention that even at the time of release of this video, the footage was still a bit on the older side already and I could instantly tell.
After revisiting DDA a couple months back and seeing what changed over the course of many years, I came to the conclusion that the whole shift towards "hyperrealism" isn't doing the game any favours and discovered a fork of DDA, called "Bright Nights". It basically reimplements old content that was removed due to being "too out there" as well as going back on mechanics that many felt were unnecessary busiwork added to "Dark Days Ahead" in favour of not just a faster, but more FUN game, something that the DDA devs seemingly have forgotten. So if you want a more roguelike-esque experience as shown in the video, grab yourself "Bright Nights" instead... or just download both, check them out and see what suits you better, I can't exactly tell you what to do.
This was basically what I was coming here to say! I think the only thing that DDA has over Bright Nights right now is nested containers but as i understand it the only reason they're not in BrightNights is because the contributors to BN don't want to wholesale import the system with all its problems!
what did the updates add that make it less fun? i tried the newest version and the game more or less seems the same with some minor expectations, but i also never played old cataclysm so maybe i just already got used to the new one.
@@bananafone1414 Well, there's the meme that kevin (the head of DDA) hates fun things and removes them whenever possible and that is one that has stood the test of time, but to give some examples of things that newer players will just take as "okay, that's how the game is":
We had a simple, yet perfectly functional food system - not this "realistic" stomach system that holds baby portions and requires you to be eating 6 small meals a day. We had an inventory, that, while a bit imaginative by just having a simple "volume", which was the size, wasn't micromanagement hell with nested pockets that bogged down inventory sorting. We had laser weapons and stronger craftable weapons. We had martial arts that didn't suck on a long one and were actually viable *and* deadly.
Basically, the game got turned into a hyperrealistic mess, when back then it was nothing but pure roguelike fun. The entire idea behind "realism" is always an iffy one when someone has to draw the line there, I get that. But the issue is: some systems implemented are fucking abitrary and make barely any sense. Bright Nights is basically "what cata used to be with expansion on the sci-fi front."

Yeah, I tried CDDA again after a long break and was like wtf to the game keeping track of your CALORIE intake. So if you do any strenous activity you now need to eat more to compensate, meaning if your farming you now need twice the food to keep up with your farming, etc. It was so fucking irritating.
And the inventory system! Oh you want to carry 2 guns? Well you don't have enough pockets large enough to hold the volume of the gun despite having the combined storage space to carry a small shed, so just gotta leave one behind.
Thankfully someone pointed me to bright nights, or I'd have dropped the game entirely.

I played through a few people to get a feel for the controls, then decided I wanted a harder challenge, so I became a police officer inside a megacity on the densest settings I could. I took 5 steps out of my safehouse and spotted a GIANT ASS horde of hulks, spitters, and other zombies. I managed to get far enough away to find a working SWAT Van and mowed down several hulks before plunging the car full of guns into a river and pulling myself up on the other side, where I proceeded to burn down a forest to stay warm.
What have I got to lose? Nothing, this game's great, but time consuming and it makes you want to harm yourself.
you're supposed to blow open a national gaurd depot using a makeshift bomb and than steal a tank that has 5 shells and has a 50. cal machine gun with over 400 rounds that can kill zombies with just one bullet and use it to kill a large town

I have to thank Sseth for this review, it's been a couple of years since I first downloaded the game, but I still play it regularly to this day, it's definitely one of my all-time favourite games at this point.
Im just starting the past week, any tips man.

There's no shame in running away from fights that aren't going to swimmingly. Avoid anything that even looks remotely threatening (packs of enemies, moose, mi-go just to name a few) and try to lure enemies to you one at a time and into tight choke points so you are only ever attacked from one space at a time.
Get yourself a decent melee weapon to start with:wooden spear for piercing - can be crafted, 2-by-sword or makeshift crowbar for bashing or a crude sword for cutting.
Only focus on one melee type early on.
Food is not nearly as big of a problem as one would assume - water is. You can get by without eating for several days, but you'll need water on a constant basis.
Fire is a great way to kill zombies if you carry a lighter/matchbox with you and have the time to quickly light a bush on fire, just position yourself so that the fire is between you and the enemy. They'll sometimes avoid it, but also just sometimes stumble into it.
Keep some form of medical supplies on you: A painkiller, bandages and some disinfectant to fix bites and clean wounds. Infection kills you within a day.
Keep on trying, even if you have to make a more powerful character to tackle the early game. eventually you'll drift towards making more difficult characters to ramp up the challenge.

Once played a run where I managed to become a crack shot with a bow and arrow, and survived by silently sneaking around at night looting houses and eliminating threats soundlessly. Then on the way back from a night raid, I got caught in a rainstorm toward the middle of fall. I didn't realize how important vitamins and healthy eating were, and wasn't wearing warm clothes. My character got sick, and I died of a cold.
I rolled a hulking 9 strength cannibalistic killing machine of a female, that was also a taekwondo master. I killed the only person occupying the shelter with me, tried to butcher his body first with a hoe, then with a butter knife, none worked. I set out to explore, and found a horde of zombified children, which I massacred with power kicks and elbow slams. I decided to press on despite the wounds or the growing cold, but night came, it got much colder, and my starved, dehydrated murderer collapsed in some bushes, where her story ended.
People like you are why i plan to be innawoods up in my mountain cave during the societal collapse.

This wonderful channel helps me find great games I’d miss otherwise. One of my recent playthroughs, I just finished my starting item crafting and decided to head into a nearby town for supplies. Checking my map as I got close (and skirting around some dogs fighting a couple zombies that had strayed from the city) I see a gun store and got greedy. Unable to find a way in from the back, I try around the corner and get spotted by some zombies. I tried running at first, then decided to fight the few that were there. Of course, tons more quickly showed up, so it was back to running, making a fighting retreat as I went. Unfortenetly I got bit in the entrail fight. I ran into a locked door, which I pryed open and closed behind me just in time. I found I was in a sporting goods store, and the liquor store was just across the street. Got spotted looting the sporting goods store by zombies and hid in the back until they all left. Thought of fighting as I crossed but quickly decided to just jump through a broken window in the liquor store. Picked up a gun near the window, but didn’t use it thinking it was empty. Fought as zombies came thru the window but eventually ran thru a door on the other side of the store. Was soon surrounded and decided to make a valiant last stand. Took down almost all of them before dying. Soon realized the 10 next to the gun probably meant 10 rounds. Laughed at that.
One of the best stores to hit when you first dive into your nearest city is an antique / pawn shop. There's a very high chance you'll run into an authentic (or even fake, they're still sharp) longsword or katana. They'll one shot any of the basic infected easily, just try get hold of a welder to avoid breaking it completely.
Guns in the city are a liability before you're completely ready to start storming shit - save them for dire situations like shocker brutes charging you down.

So this was one of my characters:
I was dying of thirst and hunger so I broke into a hazardous materials containment facility burned half a building down with a single match to get light so I could make a club and break into the storage facility where I found cloning vats and a sewage system I broke one of the cloning vats with my club and broke open the sewage system. I then drank copious amounts of sewage water in an attempt to mutate myself into some horrible monster however it didn't work and as a result I commit suicide by burning the storage facility I was in down with two matches it basically exploded into a blaze of glory and I was consumed by the fire(edited)

My advice to anyone who wants the near-future Cyberpunk-esque Cataclysm that this video is really still on, I suggest sticking to .F or earlier or one of the forks. Bright Nights is a popular one but like the mainline CDDA its creator has been stripping features away that he doesn't like so your mileage may vary. BN also has much shorter seasons so it's not trying to treat time realistically but in its favor it has most of the fun stuff of CDDA without some of the newer tedium.
You should do UnReal World next. It's the next logical step. Also the guy who's worked on it for over 20 years is a Finnish guy living in a cabin in the middle of nowhere with dial up internet.
I've been a fan of Unreal world for a while. Will I have an easy transition into Cataclysm?
Absolutely, just make sure to start in the middle of the winter with a really bad day scenario with shower victim character.

I once played as a high schooler trying to escape from living hell in school,i died to a horde of zombie kids,it was very fucked up being mauled to death by their little hands.
First game: Start game as a fisherman in the woods. Guy I spawn next to me has a dying mom wants me go out there and put an end to her. I refuse. Wander off eastward, just keep going see a coyote, try to get past, it attacks me. Throw rock at it and bash its head in with a stick. Start getting frostbite, first my leg starts and the shortly after my arm also. Need to find shelter. See a road only a bit north decide to follow it.
I continue my adventure and keep hiking. Find a ton of metal wreckage, a black box and an armoured vest (almost impale myself getting it) , Feelprettygood.jpg.
Find just a random 1.0L engine just lying on the side of the road. I see few buildings. Gotta get warm. Get jumped by a zombie. Start fighting it. Another one joins so I start running. Fucking moose just jumps after me, we kill the zombies and then he bashes my head in.
10/10 will probably get my head bashed in by a moose again
i started off as a cyborg, because i was a coward, i decided to make him a literal killing machine, by setting the infinite skill points on, spawned in some forest, eventually i found a road nearby, decided to follow it, after walking for like 15 in game minutes, i found a carhorn, a hippie van and an engine laying on the road, next to some farm, then i walked 15 more minutes and a group of zombies mauled me to death, because i had no idea how the fighting mechanics work in this game, i managed to only take out one, THE END

I was struggling to wrap my head around this one until I decided to make myself suffer and try out the "your in a totally fucked situation" starts.
The "you WILL learn or else" method was actually the most effective thing I'd done in terms of learning while doing the prison escape start, and when I plowed through the front gates of the prison on the prison bus, god it felt good.
in that run I learned how to craft, some AI relation specifics, how to dismantle objects in the world, just SO much. after escaping I just abandoned that character. After escaping, I felt they won the right to survive free of my own incomitance imo.
Dusty's still out there somewhere, wresting down whatever is foolhardy enough to cross them.
In my last run I started as a cyborg test subject in a deep frozen lab. I was clearly a failed research subject, lots of my augmentations were leaking, itchy and cumbersome. Luckily, my entire body was fused with metallic frames that made me quite resilient in combat. The first thing I did was finding an autodoc station to try to remove at least the worst implants that kept damaging me all the time, it was also impossible to fall asleep because one of my implants kept shocking me every 15 minutes. The process failed multiple times, I was on the brink of death, but after removing some of those faulty CBM's, at least I could sleep now, disinfect my wounds and recover a little bit.
I'm making good progress with understanding how these mutagens work. I think I can even control their effects to some degree. I have shed my last remaining bits of humanity as I selectively mutated my few remaining biological systems with the serums that I've been researching. Unfortunately, the side-effects are becoming really bad: my mind needs sleep badly, but my body no longer gets tired. I spend hours trying to force myself to sleep, but I can't. Only the strongest sleep pills occasionally work and my addiction to them has grown out of control, I crave for more of their soothing effect.
On my most recent playthrough of CDDA, i ended up spawning in a house naked. The only clothes i found that fit me was a literal fursuit and the basement was full of various submachine guns
Once I had a fairly safe and supplied setup in a basement in some small town. One day I mindlessly put a cannister of butane in my unlit furnace to see what would happen. Later I tried to actually start a fire in the furnace and died instantly from the explosion
Aight, i made black powder (for sugar rockets of course :) and forged steel in a hole that I dug with a stick, powered by makeshift bellows made from tesco carrier bags because my dad left me locked out of his house in the middle of winter because i was bored and i was 13. I was extremely pleased with cdda when i could recreate my life in-game, this is sims for perpetual autists and chronic pyromaniacs. I'll give it 10 fire stations called out of 10
