    In the other game by Subset Games, "Into the Breach", you can find secret time capsules with Mantis, Rock and Zoltan pilots. They have abilities similar to their racial attributes in FTL (the Rock pilot is immune to fire and has more health, the Mantis one has a melee attack instead of the repair action, and the Zoltan has only one HP but gets a shield every turn, and it also provides +1 power iirc). There is no real dialog from these pilots because they speak their own language and there doesn't appear to be an universal translator for that. I still think this is one of the coolest easter eggs you can find in games.

    "Humanitis" is a reference to an ongoing joke by streamer Lethalfrag. Since humans are generally not as useful as crew members of other races in game, the joke goes along the lines of "Oh no, I've contracted humanitis" when he picks up a human crew member.

      Humans learn skills faster than everybody else. The usefulness of that is debatable. If you happen upon the right encounter you can exploit the systems to max out your engines, shields and piloting abilities. Not something you can really do though if you're streaming or just impatient.

      I dislike the trope of humans being the "jack of all trades" race in both sci-fi and fantasy

    • @No-uc6fg
      @No-uc6fg 2 місяці тому +13

      @@Sunnysideanyway It's less a "jack of all trades" and more a comparison baseline. If you have mice, humans and tigers and compare their running speed, you can define the human as the baseline, so the mice is slower than the human and the tiger is faster. This does not mean that the human is a jack of all trades, but merely that the frame of reference uses humans as the middle point.
      Aliens/Fantasy humanoids will, by their very nature as non-humans, be compared to humans, so you have elves better at magic than humans and dwarves better at tech than humans. It's the frame of reference, rather than an intentional jack of all trades.

    The mantis have to be one of my favorite “warrior races” in fiction because not only does their fighting style make sense and even teach the player an alternative to victory they also aren’t stupid. They never claim to be perfect and actively work to fix their shortcomings. It also is such a strange feeling because as long as you can give them a good fight it feels like you can get along with them, but also they are so unapologetically evil that it doesn’t feel great that they will gladly work with you against another evil. It almost feels like they are just playing the long game as well as survival, but it’s so hard to not accept any help they give because they are so strong. I love them!

    • @TayTayMakesBeats
      @TayTayMakesBeats 22 дні тому +1

      They're like self aware Tyranids that can be reasoned with if you look at it a certain way. Same with how the Lanius are similar to Necrons in their metal bodies and hibernation but toned way down. Not accusing the devs of cribbing 40K, a lot of this is general space fantasy stuff but I really like FTL's subtle worldbuilding and wouldn't be surprised if there was some inspiration there. If so they're doing it right :)

    I admit that the author could have chosen a better way to describe FTL than "A hidden gem", but I think people pointing out are ignoring a piece of the puzzle, while it is a well known title and much beloved it has a niche aspect to it that makes it seem more obscure than it is, which exists in spite of its mainstream popularity. This is why it feels like "a hidden gem" even though it very obviously isn't.

    Regarding the flagship, I think the big secret about it is knowing that it exists in the first place. When you show up to the Last Stand, you explain to the admiral that the flagship is the weakness of the rebel fleet.
    Also, in my personal interpretation, part of the secret was also access codes to rebel networks that would communicate where the flagship was, which is why you can see its location at all times.
    The fact the federation wouldn't know about this could make sense, but the size of the flagship is a little inconsistent. It's in the same general size range as your cruiser, which is way smaller than the rebel fleet with the ASB that shows up in the background. Although events such as the under construction flagship describe it as massive. Personally I like to imagine the flagship is relatively small, that makes it unassuming among the rebel fleet meaning the feds wouldn't focus fire on it as they don't know its vital role. (as for why they don't do that once you've told them about the flagship, my headcannon is the larger federation ships can't effectively chase the flagship, and instead focus on firing on the rebels in the background so they can't turn their ASBs onto you)
    I don't think it has much to do with the flagship only controlling the autoships, in fact it would be strange if the flagship was able to control the countless numbers of them from across the galaxy while your cruiser has to travel across 8 sectors all the way to the federation's doorstep to deliver one information packet.
    Instead, I think the flagship is essential for coordinating large scale offensives, it has to be present for 3 consecutive turns above the federation base before destroying it, once you push the flagship away, the rebel fleet loses its ability to damage the federation base and has to retreat as well.
    If the flagship is destroyed, the rebels lose the one asset capable of coordinating a successful attack to wipe out the federation, and from there things probably only get worse for the rebels as the power vacuum leads to possible infighting, and the loss of their figures of authority means some rebels can abandon the fight entirely. From there the mere sight of a full federation fleet not on the defensive but jumping into a rebel occupied sector could convince some of the rebels there to simply surrender on the spot, with the more fanatical ones appropriately dealt with.

    • @federationprime
      @federationprime 3 місяці тому +15

      Maybe? Or the Rebel Flagship carries some kind of dedicated anti-capital ship superweapon that makes it a great threat despite its small size, slipping into the federation formation at will and making interception by your own small ship the best option.

      @collectiusindefinitus6935 3 місяці тому +27

      @@federationprime
      I'd prefer to say the rebel flagship plays a lot less recklessly, the background for the flagship fight is always rebel ships, no matter where you are, and the way you're described chasing it makes me imagine you're the one pushing into the rebel formation where the other ships cannot follow you and merely cover you so you don't get ASB'd.

    15:45 - mantis ships only ever have mantis and engi, no rockmen
    35:10 - i interpreted this as the mantis not displaying the rockmens internal organs, not as rockmen not having interal organs (which i think makes a lot more sense)
    37:10 - i interpreted this as wrong place wrong time, basically the rockmen thinking you were some previous fight that followed them to finish them off, not necessarily xenophobia
    41:10 - i actually think the latter makes sense, because we can see them spontaneously making crystals in game (their active ability)
    44:06 - the fact that the crystals dont recieve outsiders kindly could be due to a shift in attitude (its clearly been at least a while since ruwen left after all)
    44:28 - i think the idea of a group of rebellious crystals wanting to reopen the link to the rest of the galaxy is the most plausible, and the reason ruwen is in the pod is because something went wrong and that was the only way to stay alive. perhaps all his comrades are dead?
    45:30 - maybe crystals just live a really long time?
    48:24 - i would hesitate to call the ponies intelligent - we dont have enough evidence for that imo. the free engi outcome in that event could be simple instinct or just chance.
    49:57 - fed b does not actually break the theme - this dude was turned into a bird iirc

    I had a sort of similar theory/idea about the 'secret data' you had. I assumed it was you the player, who was themselves an advanced ai, moreso than any before it. Since I believe the game says you are transporting/carrying the data to the rebels and delivering it to them, and that's the only thing I can think of that you're transporting, so the data isn't intel, but rather literal code for the ai. This is sorta referenced i think in the achievement referencing HAL, and is also why you need a pilot to jump, even though it's clear other ships can do automated jumps and it's odd that a pilot needs to be physically there to push the jump button, it's so you don't decide to mutiny/kill the crew, since you would be stranded and killed by scrappers or the rebel fleet, and is also why you can pause time and do things nearly instantaneously in game time, since you can process things much much faster due to onboard computing.
    I like the one you talked about in the video though as well!

    If a rebel group of human supremacist are able to take on and beat an established multi species federation, I would think the other species are lesser too, or hindering/harming the galactic advancement
    The federation was not unified and the aliens are not even united within their own species

For example I thought that the slug pleasure barge was something they made up for multiverse (I love how they flesh out so much obscure stuff from the game). Great video.

    18:37 I think it's more along the lines of the Mantis trader being worried you'll be blown up before he can trade with you. Imagine how many times he's had paying customers coming over only for a warrior to kill them and take the scrap for themselves
    also was hoping you'd talk more about how it's possible that any Mantis at all would be working with the Federation, like how they ever got a Mantis crew to pilot the Mantis ship, or how they seem to have some kind of honor system where if you save their life they are forever loyal to you

    The guy who helpd to write all of this game's lore also did the world building for subnautica. Also if your wondering why the second subnautica was abysmal (hah) it's because they fired this guy and replaced him with a-diversity-hire.
    I always wondered why that second subnautica was so bad so I looked up who made the first one then cross referenced it with the second one and untangled what happened. The guy who wrote this and subnautica's lore understands world building and he understands what scares people in a compelling way. This is why you should never buy a second release of a game title without checking to see if it's by the same dev team because Companies, brands, trademarks, copywriter holders, and stock holders are all things that do not actually make good games. People makes good games, passionate people specifically. Follow the passionate people not the hollowed out corpo's pretending to be them and you'll never be disappointed by a game you purchase

    I love how much lore and gameplay are tied together. Learning about alien races shows you what their strengths and weaknesses are, which are also hints on what to expect from them and why should you try and recruit one aboard. On top, diversity of your crew is very fundamental for a good run so you are encouraged to it, which fits the federations lore of believing in racial union. And because rebels are regarded as racist, you for certain can expect only humans aboard when you see their color schemes. It just very solid world building where learning it yields actual useful information, and it isn't just bunch of fun trivia for hell of it.

    There is a FTL fan series (Fully animated.) that expanded on the lore and made a proper story that filled in quite a few lost gaps. I'd recommend giving it a watch. Though I need to give a warning, early episodes aged a bit like milk due to the creator's inexperience when they were still learning. But it improves after the first five episodes. FTL Kestrel Adventures.

    I always thought the Lanius were a partial reference to the Shrike from the Hyperion Cantos. Enigmatic, spiky metal beings, so named for their tendency to impale victims on thorns (like rl shrikes, aka "butcher birds" do to store food on thorny tree branches). Lanius is the genus of many shrike species.
    Spiky, metal, enigmatic, bird references. Similarities end there, but it's a fun lil nod.

    In regards to the Crystals, they may just be Corundum: The crystalline variants of Aluminum are more commonly known as Sapphires and Rubies, though depending on what other minerals are part of the structure they can come in a variety of colors. The crystals tend to be very strong, albeit not as strong as diamonds - they rank a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale to the diamond's maximum score of 10 - and notably, they're used for making powerful lasers as sapphires and their sister gems are able to achieve tricky to reach and rare frequencies when used as lenses in lasers, and can be "mode-locked" to create extremely short pulses.

    So my take on Federation-Mantis War:
    Mantis attacks the Engie and because of the Federation Charter the Humans and Zoltans are obligated to join. Federation is first in the fray but the Zoltans delay giving the reason that they need to updated their stratagems before entering. Mantis begin enslaving Engie and force them to make defenses and weapons for the Mantis to use against the Federation, which causes massive casualties among the humans and another delay from the Zoltans. When the human delegation asks the Zoltan council if they are going honor the Federation Charter and assist the Engie the Zoltan ambassador responded due to the Mantis change in tactics and weapons they need to alter their stratagems as well, but they promise they will enter and when they do victory will be imminent, they just need access to Engie Ion weapons. The Engie exchange the technology.
    (I could add in a part of Rock Salvagers and Slug Mercenaries joining in not on the Mantis side but not friendly to the Federation)
    Eventually the Zoltans enter the war and sweep through Mantis Forces. The Zoltan shields prevent Mantis warriors from teleporting over n boarding actions where they are the strongest and Mantis weapons are frozen by Ion cannon blasts. Zoltan hover vehicles out maneuver the swift Mantis warriors on the ground and Zoltan beam weaponry slices through Mantis Ship and Soldier alike. The Mantis flees Engie territory taking a lot of slaves with them but once they left Engie space the Federation was prevented to pursue as the Zotlans argued that the charter stops at Federation Member space and to leave it is no longer a defensive action and offensive actions have to be unanimously agreed upon by all members. The Humans then proposed an invasion of Mantis space to free any Federation citizen held under slavery by the Mantis, the Zoltans disagreed as it was a needless action that would cost too much. The Engie sided with the Zoltan and since nearly all the slaves were Engie as they often surrendered immediately. If any one had the greatest cause for an invasion it would be the Engie and since they were opposed the Federation would stop at the edge of Mantis space and the Federation-Mantis war was over.
    Now when it came time for reconstruction and rebuilding it would be a disagreement that shattered the Federation. The Humans suffered the most fatalities because they would often fight even to the death in hopeless situations where Engie would immediately surrender once probability of victory and retreat both reached 0.01% for an outcome. As for the Zoltans they were last in the war and their involvement was so brief they barely suffered any casualties. The Humans agued since they made the largest sacrifice they should oversee rebuilding of the Federation Fleet. The Engie would argue that since the war happened in their space the reconstruction of their territory should be the priority. The Zoltans argued since their weapons and forces were the "reason" for their victory over the Mantis they were due compensation which shocked the human delegation. One human representative was overheard calling the Zoltan ambassador a "Glowing Slug" which greatly insulted the Zoltans. The Federation may have won the war, but they lost the peace and the Human Rebellion began.

    Hey, I loved your video! Personally, I've always viewed the Lanius as basically like cicadas, but rather than coming out on a natural cycle, they surface depending on the cycle of war and peace. I also personally thought that the Lanius would suffocate or otherwise die in an oxygenated environment, just like how some anaerobic bacteria are killed by oxygen. It also never occurred to me that they could be machines. In my mind, they were always organic, just somehow metal-based rather than carbon-based. Also, I always had a soft spot for the Rockmen of Vrachos IV, since most of my victories have come from Rock ships. Although they are Xenophobic, there's something I like about their strange sense of honor forged by hardship, like that highlighted by the rock cruiser quest.

    I'm going to give my two cents on the stasis pod. My headcanon is that there may have been another isolation period, hundreds of years before the current one. It's possible that crystals might have had a cycle similar to the lanius but more diplomacy oriented, as in getting fed up with everyone's shit and finally closing themselves off forever. I assume that this stasis pod was made before the second isolation in a time where they were much more hopeful in the races of the galaxy and just had to take a break.
