Haven't played this game for at least 2+ years. Just stumbled across your vid and good to see there is a new stable release out. Might be time to jump back in and relearn it.
Great video! I've been playing CDDA for a while but you just taught me zoom is available if we switch from the default map. I appreciate you referring other Cataclysm content creators, as its hard finding decent channels. I personally really enjoy Worm Girl's style of narration during gameplay. I look forward to seeing you produce more CDDA content and hope your channel grows!
I didn't even know you gave rycon a shout out at the end 😂 heck yeah mate! I'll be checking out your gameplay series if you have any on your channel real soon.thanks again!
Heck yeah! Rycon's awesome. I should have shouted out www.youtube.com/@TheMurderUnicorn as well, actually; he has loads of tutorials and is still making more. And there are definitely plenty of gameplay series on my channel as well. Most of the time, I'm still learning as well.
@@ProfessionalDumbss I need to update this series. There’s a way better way to install the game: CDDA Kitten Launcher - you can get it from a GitHub repository managed by Fris0uman There’s also the CDDA Catapult Launcher - this one’s cross-platform, so if the other doesn’t work this one probably will They both will manage installs and let you way more easily upgrade the game when you need to. Downloading it directly is still a fine way to get the game (and it was the best way to play the latest stable version when I made this video), but using one of those launchers is a lot better these days.
Ah, sadly I don't have a Steam Deck. I know some people have managed to get it working though; let me see what I can find... Old Reddit post from someone who managed to get the Windows version and the Catapult launcher working via something called Proton (you probably know more about that than me - it's a compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on the Steam Deck): www.reddit.com/r/cataclysmdda/comments/w0ldb2/has_anyone_managed_to_get_the_tiles_version/ I've seen others saying that the Linux version does work just fine as is, though... you probably have A LOT of keymapping to do.
Hmm, this is an old video now so things may have changed. I mean to do an updated tutorial series at some point... If you're still having trouble, definitely give this launcher a try instead: github.com/Fris0uman/CDDA-Game-Launcher/releases It's an alternative (better) way to install the game and manage installations, and the only reason I didn't recommend it when making this tutorial is because it didn't flag the latest stable version properly so the stable version it installed was super outdated. That's been fixed since and one of the core maintainers of CDDA has adopted the launcher code and keeps it up to date too. The launcher is a lot easier to use, but let me know if you still have an issue and I'll see if it's something I can look into when I'm not busy.
Great video, Question about the map, I saw Rycon play on an overmap on his latest videos that looks like google maps but Pixel.......I prefer this is that the current default? I also don't want Chibi characters, I want Rycons Tileset and Overmap? Is that the default?
TL;DR version: Rycon uses Ultica for both the main tileset and the overmap. Ultica is the default for the main tileset, but you need to select it for the overmap. More below... In Rycon's latest videos, he's using Ultica I believe - which is the default. He used to always use a set called UndeadPeople, but that had the chibi-like characters you want to avoid. As for the overmap, just checked his latest video and it looks like he's using Ultica for the map as well. By default, the map doesn't use a tileset. You need to set "Use tiles to display overmap" to true, and then I think the default is RetroDays (the one I use), so you need to select Ultica from the "Choose overmap tileset" option. Both of those are on the graphics tab in the settings menu.
@@thombruce TY, Yah I like the Chici toons allot as I watched all of 'Bran' 90 episodes. The old school look is cool too. I just like the overmap to look like actual houses even though I know it's not Done yet and Ascii can still pop up from time to time.
Didn't know you could zoom the map, ah well I like my ascii map, What buttons do could be an entire series, there's a bloody lot of them. I got in to the game because I was too lazy to get up and put something else on after one of rycons fallout videos had finished.
Haha, a brilliant way to discover the game. I didn't actually know Rycon had any Fallout videos. I only got into his videos after discovering Cataclysm. My way more boring discovery of the game hinges on trying to learn Vi keys last year (HJKL are used as cursor keys in the Vim text editor) and discovered Cataclysm as a way to gamify that learning experience. Won't be covering all of the keys at once. My plan is to separate and group them based on the scope of what it is they do. So next episode is all about movement and looking around, and I think I covered everything I needed to there. I almost forgot to cover '.' but was fortunate enough to have a kreck barge in and remind me.
@@thombruce Yeah, just finished watching that one, didn't know about vi keys, and this is unrelated, but krecks don't leave bodies, they kinda melt out of existence.
Ah, I didn't know that. I still haven't fought a kreck so I don't have a good sense for how strong they are. What's nasty about them, I know, is that tendency to quickly attack and retreat, but I was surprised the NPC won that encounter.
Just remembered there was an ASCIITiles tile set you could use for the map if you want the benefits of map zoom without giving up ASCII (or a tile-based approximation anyway). It is a little different to the font you'll be familiar with though, especially the roads.
@Thom Bruce might try a few out, didn't know how to change them. A lot of rycons dust/frost fallout modded runs feature cdda characters, elliot and the police woman for example, who's name I can't recall, only cdda series I haven't watched. If you think the quality of his cdda stuffs good you should watch some fallout stuff, dunno when he last uploaded one though.
I've had a similar issue from time to time. I'm still not sure what causes it, but it has usually worked for me to... okay, this is a pain I know, but restarting my computer - that's what worked. 😕 Sorry that isn't very helpful. If you're on Windows, you might have better luck using this launcher to download the game, tilesets and soundpacks: github.com/Fris0uman/CDDA-Game-Launcher/releases If you're on Linux or Mac, this one might work instead: github.com/qrrk/Catapult/releases You might wanna try a different soundpack too, just to check if it's just CC Sounds or if it's happening with multiple. Both launchers have support for easily downloading soundpacks from a list. If you're still having trouble after trying a couple of things, I'd ask for help on the community Discord: discord.gg/byxwnAU Sorry I don't have a straightforward answer. It hasn't happened to me in a while, but I'm not sure what fixed it or if it even is fixed. 🤷♂️
On the releases page at cataclysmdda.org/releases/ there are two versions for Mac; make sure you go for the one with "tiles" in the name: cdda-osx-tiles-x64-2023-03-01-0054.dmg From there, setup should be exactly the same as for Windows or Linux. In game, just go to Options -> Graphics -> Choose Tileset and pick the tileset you would like to use. I haven't covered manually installing tilesets yet, but I believe if you want to install a custom tileset you just have to add it to the /gfx folder of your CDDA installation. I don't know if this works with the curses version of the game or if it's any different on Mac, however.
It should come with the game download - I don't think you need to get it separately, I never have. Find it in the options menu under Graphics. Change the value for "Choose tileset" to Chibi_Ultica.
Oh, thanks for this! Good resource. Definitely would have made it into my shout-outs too had I known… Should be pretty up to date too, only being a year old.
You may find it easier to download via this launcher: github.com/Fris0uman/CDDA-Game-Launcher/releases Just download launcher.exe and it can handle finding the right version to install. You can then launch the game from the launcher too.
I actually agree. Been thinking about rebooting this series and making the episodes much shorter. Cover less, but you’d be able to find what you need a lot more easily… In the meantime, I’m always happy to answer questions on these old vids if you have any.

Worm Girl always has expert narration! Even in her Let's Play series, she's teaching as she goes and I'm learning a lot from her series. 🙂
thanks for the video. catapult alone was an amazing find i was struggling to figure out the sound stuff
